In the True Spirit of The MOG, we're going to jazz things up a bit on this episode with a producer, artist and musician who needs no introduction, but he's getting one anyways, Mr. John ‘The Bisque' Grant. I've known and been working with John Grant off-and-on for over 20 years and no one, I mean no one has a more decorated production resume than John – he even has his own patented microphone, the Granelli G5790. As a musician, he's made his way into Guitar Magazine alongside Brian May of Queen and he's worked with everyone from Dennis Chambers to Najee to Carl Filipiak. He's as talented as he is kind and I couldn't be happier to have him on the show. Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. Steve Luongo has produced, performed, and recorded with several well-known artists including Leslie West of Mountain, Cream bassist Jack Bruce, Eddie Money, Alan Parsons, Todd Rundgren, Heart's Ann Wilson, Ritchie Blackmore, Mark Farner, Joe Walsh, Billy Squier. The most prolific and significant of all his work was with John Entwistle, best known as the iconic bass guitarist for The Who. The two musicians became the best of friends. Luongo produced, performed, co-wrote, and toured with The John Entwistle Band until Entwistle's death in 2002. Their last live performance together was in Japan during the A Walk Down Abbey Road tour. Later that year he was invited by The Who and Entwistle's family to write and read the eulogy at Entwistle's memorial service in London. In 2007, Luongo served as producer and composer for a studio band he created with AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams, in which Williams recruited frontman Brian Johnson as the vocalist. The project later known as Forklift gave birth to 7 tracks. "Chain Gang on the Road" was the only track offered by the quartet and was briefly available for a free download during a run of US tour dates in 2007. In 2012 Luongo began a musical partnership with Cheap Trick vocalist Robin Zander by forming The Robin Zander Band. Zander was among the first to be asked to appear in Luongo's documentary film An Ox's Tale - The John Entwistle Story about the late John Entwistle. (https://youtu.be/PwZrLRBkAfk) ARTIST: Steve has been creating works of art for as long as he has been playing music. His critically acclaimed colorful and flowing abstract visual art has been displayed in galleries and is in collections worldwide. Steve's art has been described by critics as rhythmic and musical. FASION DESIGNER: As a fashion designer Steve Luongo based his collection on his original abstract art. His passion for rhythm and love of color are infused in this deeply personal fashion collection. Each garment is a unique artistic representation of Steve's art and like his prints each piece is numbered making it a true limited-edition collectible. While Roger Daltrey, Pete Townsend and Keith Moon took the spotlight with their on-stage antics, John Entwistle, dubbed "The Quiet One," stood in the shadows... poised to become the biggest bass player in rock and roll. With his arena-rock days behind him, Entwistle continued down his own path, finding great musical freedom with the John Entwistle Band. In 2002, after years of touring his solo project, Entwistle couldn't resist the lure of bringing back one of the greatest bands in rock and roll history. Tragically, plans for The Who's North American Reunion Tour were cut short when on the eve of the first show John was found dead in his Las Vegas hotel room. "The Ox," as Entwistle was affectionately known, left behind many fans and several unfinished projects. With his passing, the world lost a musical legend, dubbed Guitar Magazine's "Bassist of the Millennium." Narrated by Peter Frampton, John Entwistle: An Ox's Tale covers the life of John Entwistle, from his first public performance at the age of 14 to his feelings about The Who's most recent reunion. This film contains the last footage and interviews ever shot with Entwistle, offering the one chance for fans to discover the real life behind the man who far exceeded his greatest aspirations. In 1971, Entwistle became the first member of The Who to release a solo album, Smash Your Head Against the Wall, which earned him a cult following in the US. Other solo studio albums included: Whistle Rymes (1972), Rigor Mortis Sets In (1973), Mad Dog (1975), Too Late the Hero (1981), and The Rock (1996). He also fronted the John Entwistle Band. "THE GREATEST UNKNOWN GUITARIST"IN THE BEGINNING by Roy Buchanan (Polydor, 1974)This is one of my all-time favorite 8 track scores. I bought it for .29 cents at Rockaway Records in Silverlake, CA., and the amount of sublime bliss that it has given me for that paltry sum doesn't equate. This proves the egalitarian potential of the 8 track: for the price of some spare change, one of life's most profound visions may be glimpsed. It is a collector's Eldorado to not only find a hidden treasure in perfect condition, but to get it for a steal. I had never heard of Roy Buchanan when I decided: “what the hell”, and grabbed this immaculate cart,- but Robbie Robertson, Danny Gatton, Arlen Roth, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Jerry Garcia, and many others sure did, and they were influenced by his signature tone - (cited by Guitar Magazine as one of the 50 greatest of all time). And when I popped this cart into the player and heard his plaintive, wailing strings for the first time, I spontaneously burst into tears of delight. This was a decade after his early demise, at age 48, when Roy was found suspiciously hanging by his shirt in a jail cell, after being arrested for “public intoxication”. Just imagine: if he had succeeded in his plan to quit the music business in the mid-60s, and become a hairdresser, the world would never have had these great recordings featuring his signature “pinch” harmonics, volume controlled “wah-wah”, and chicken picking. It's a loss I don't want to contemplate.Legend has it that after Jimi Hendrix stole Roy's wah-wah sound (by cheating with a pedal instead of using the volume control) - Roy decided to refocus his playing towards roots music, and in 1971 when the documentary “Introducing Roy Buchanan” was followed by an offer to this sharecropper's son to join the Rolling Stones (which he declined), the world started taking notice. On this, his fifth and last studio album, Roy delivers all the R&B telecaster goodness one could wish for (abetted by the punchy Tower of Power horns, and funky vocals by Billy Sheffield on Rescue Me and I'm a Ram). In the Beginning made it to #160 on the charts - and onto my eternal playlist.

Whether it be a kerrang, a chop, a blistering solo, some finger picking or a subtle flange, the electric guitar is one of the defining sounds of the 20th century. Without it – and its constant companion, the amplifier - popular culture would be unrecognisable today: no big gigs, no stadium concerts. And almost certainly no rock music. But why was it needed and how was it created? Who were the pioneers of the technology and who were the early-adopting exponents? Rajan Datar and his three guest experts delve into the roots of this iconic instrument. Monica Smith is Head of Exhibitions and Interpretation for the Smithsonian's Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation. Among the many projects she has curated at the museum is From Frying Pan to Flying V: The Rise of the Electric Guitar. Paul Atkinson is professor of Design and Design History at Sheffield Hallam university and the author of Amplified: A Design History of the Electric Guitar. HP Newquist is the founder of the National Guitar Museum in the United States. He has written numerous books on the guitar and its history, and was the editor-in-chief of Guitar Magazine. Murray Cook is one of the founding members of Australian children’s music group The Wiggles. Easily recognisable in his red skivvy with a guitar around his neck, Murray played in the band for 20 years and recorded an enormous amount of records (an album every year and sometimes more!). At their peak they were known to play up to 40 shows a month and on average were playing to a million people every year, that definitely makes them one of the hardest working bands in showbiz. Guitar Magazine once speculated that since Cook was one of the first guitarists children were exposed to, he might be the most influential guitarist in the world, nice one Murray! Since leaving the Wiggles in 2012 Murray has been focusing on his new project The Soul Movers which just released a new record entitled ‘Evolution’. What the hell were we thinking? This episode is not our finest hour. A guitar magazine from 1973 that literally reviews restaurants where someone plays a guitar whilst you eat... Sound good? What about a magazine that targets an audience so young they can't legally drink.. Still on board? Also Its not our finest hour because it only goes on for 47 minutes. 13 minutes short. Considered by some musicians to be the "Disneyland for musicians," Sweetwater as one of the largest musical equipment dealers in the United States. They also have a word-class recording studio in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Mark Hornsby is the Director of Music Production there. "My philosophy is is mixing starts when you put the first microphone in front of the first instrument” -Mark Hornsby Depending on the project Mark will serve as producer or mixer or both for the artists who come in to record at Sweetwater. Some of the artists that Mark has worked with include Adrian Belew - former frontman of King Crimson and a guitarist who has played with Frank Zappa, David Bowie, and Talking Heads. His solo album Flux was also released as an app that allowed for a new listening experience each time the app was launched. Alison Krause - a key figure in the contemporary resurgence of bluegrass-country music. She has won 27 Grammy Awards, which makes her the most awarded living recipient. Her soundtrack performances include O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Cold Mountain. Carl Verheyen - listed as one of the top guitar players in the world by Guitar Magazine and has played with bands like the Bee Gees and Supertramp and recorded music for films like The Usual Suspects and Ratatouille. Jonatha Brooke - created the theme song for Joss Whedon’s TV series Dollhouse. Her music has also been included on shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Return to Neverland, and her sound has been compared to Indigo Girls, Sheryl Crow, and Suzanne Vega. (As a side tangent that might be of interest to long-time listeners, three of the four musicians have birthdays on the 23rd. Adrian's birthday is on Dec. 23, Alison's is on July 23, and Jonatha's is on Jan. 23. What is happening?!) In the episode we discuss Mark's collaborations with each artist. We also talk about his experience and big take away from recording at the legendary Abby Road Studios in London. Mark is also a member of the Recording Academy, which means that he gets to vote on the Grammys, so we also discuss what he listens for when he evaluates music and what music trend he's like to see go away. My interview with Mark led me to reflect on the state of entertainment industry, which led to some thoughts about good and evil. How exactly did a conversation about mixing lead me to metaphysics commentary? You'll have to listen to find out! If you connect with Mark's preference for getting it right during the performance, then you might also appreciate this episode with Jeff Jasper. He's a digital effects supervisor who has worked on films like The Dark Knight and Interstellar with Christopher Nolan, a filmmaker who prefers using practical effects whenever possible. Steve Lynch is a founding member of the group "Autograph" in the mid-80's and sold over 5 million records worldwide, including the platinum-selling album "Sign In Please". Their hit single "Turn Up the Radio" reached No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Steve's work on this track helped earn him "Guitar Solo of the Year" honors from Guitar Magazine in 1985. Steve reformed the new "Autograph" in 2014 and they are currently performing on an active international touring schedule and are busy recording their next album. Steve is known as the "Two-Handed Guitarist" for his innovation of two-handed multi-fingered tapping technique, which he still teaches today. Perhaps the most elaborate recorded example of the technique is the unaccompanied instrumental track "Hammerhead", from Autograph's second album, "That's the Stuff".Steve has written columns and appeared in Guitar World, Guitar for the Practicing Musician, Guitar Player, and Musician magazines as well as other international music magazines. He has also written three books and has an instructional video (REH Video's "Steve Lynch - The Two-Handed Guitarist") displaying his double-handed playing technique and has taught over 300 clinics on advanced guitar techniques in 18 countries. After returning to Seattle and having over 20 years of experience teaching guitar privately in the South King County area, Steve founded the Federal Way School of Music in 2006 and remains on staff as guitar instructor, when not on tour with Autograph.
