More than half the world's population currently lives in cities, and current estimates suggest that by 2050 nearly 7 out of every 10 people will live in urban spaces. In an increasingly crowded and urbanized world, space has become a precious commodity. As a species, we seem drawn to cities, despite their obvious disadvantages. From the ancient cities of Southeast Asia to the crowded streets of modern Los Angeles, cities offer opportunities for interactions that wouldn't be possible in urban areas. In this episode, we sit down with Professor Monica Smith, who shares her perspective on the importance of infrastructure and shared spaces in the birth and survival of cities past and present. How do cities affect the way that we interact with the natural environment and with our fellow human beings, and how can we think creatively about shared spaces in crowded urban environments? Dr. Monica L. Smith is a professor and Navin and Pratima Doshi Chair in Indian Studies at UCLA. She is an ancient economic historian who uses archaeological data to analyze the collective effects of routine activities through the study of food, ordinary goods, and architecture. Her current research focuses on the Indian subcontinent, a region that has produced some of the world's earliest and most long-lived urban areas. Her most recent book was published by Viking Press in 2019, and is titled “Cities: The First 6000 Years.”

And for good reason, even though we are seeing more and more advocacy issues across state/province and international lines, we can still see highly concentrated and visible issues that can manifest in these regions based upon history, geography, and demographics.  No one knows this better than the Southeast Tourism Society, an entity whose responsibility includes empowering a diverse network of tourism professionals through education, advocacy, recognition, and networking for the Southeast. Overcoming adversity, while seemingly impossible in the moment, is what motivates us to pursue our dreams. In today's episode of IntHerrupt, Linda is joined by entrepreneur and business owner Monica Smith to discuss how she worked to reach her dreams and overcome the obstacles that got in her way. As a child, Monica's family life wasn't perfect: While her family was close-knit, her father's alcoholism fostered familiar dysfunction.  Monica began to daydream to escape her family life, and she lost focus in school. Her mom knew something was wrong, so she sent Monica away to her aunt.  Monica started to do better in school. But life took a turn, and she fell into the wrong crowd. She was in a gang, experienced drug abuse, and her life spiraled. Her dreams fell by the wayside, and he had a baby at 17. She graduated high school and earned her diploma, but life was challenging. She lost custody of her kids, but life is all about overcoming adversity. And those obstacles brought her to where she is today. Sometimes things come up, and you have no control over them. Some of her dreams were to become a fashion designer, create a unique product, and just be successful. While she didn't become a fashion designer, Monica found a job with a purpose (helping women affected by homelessness and substance abuse), and she worked with women for nine years.  She went back to school for a degree in health and human services, and then she created a hair care product after going through chemotherapy. Losing her hair made her lose confidence in herself. So, she crafted a product to help grow back hair with an alcohol-free formula. This took her on a new journey of entrepreneurship and helping people. What are three things or steps or tips to encourage someone to help make their dreams come true: Don't give up, and don't get discouraged. You will fail more times than you succeed, so trust the process and stay strong. Have a strong understanding of your beliefs. Know what you want out of your vision because it's easy to go astray. Enjoy the ride because you'll meet people along the way who didn't push through their adversity.  Who has impacted Monica's life? Her mentor. Monica's mentor pulled her out of the negative situation, gave her a job, and taught her how to productively work towards her dreams. Her mentor taught Monica the value of daily maintenance - meditating, reading spirituals and books, and allowing herself quiet time. Overcome feelings of anxiety: Listen to your body. Don't be afraid to lay back rather than push forward if your body needs the rest. When she's well-rested, Monica still daydreams. That's when her mind works best.  Monica's final piece of advice? Look at the lessons you can learn through the journey. To see Monica's hair care business, visit soberroots.com. Eighty-two percent of consumers consider community involvement when deciding where to spend their money for a product or service. Having an engagement plan offers many benefits for an organization, including increased interactions between colleagues, networking with other businesses, and an overall aura of positivity when contributing to the community or a specific cause. On this episode of Like It's Your Job, hosts David Shields, Principal at Shields Legal Group, and Matt Shields, CIO at Shields Capital Group, talked with Monica Smith, Chief Giving and Community Impact officer for Communities Foundation of Texas, and JJ Ponce, Director, Communities Foundation of Texas. Communities Foundation of Texas works side by side with caring donors, committed nonprofits, philanthropy-focused businesses, and civic leaders to help build communities that thrive for all. The group discussed how corporate citizenship can be empowering for organizations and some advice on how an organization can get started. “As a community foundation, we have two different sides of our work," Smith said of CFT, who works with donors, families, and businesses to engage them in meaningful philanthropy. Through the years, CFT has developed so many great relationships with all different types of organizations that are trying to serve a community. When you engage with CFT for business, you have the ability to pick your way of helping people. "The key takeaway is you just have to get started," Smith said. "So many complex issues are facing North Texas and really the world right now, but the lesson is obviously if we all band together and work together, we can accomplish so much more than any of us can do on our own."

But why was it needed and how was it created? Who were the pioneers of the technology and who were the early-adopting exponents? Along with his wife, Dr. Monica Smith, the Dr.'s own Rev Center for Optimal Living in Chattanooga, TN. He is a chiropractor by license but has a very different approach than what you typically think of from a chiropractic office. Dr. Matt's focus is really on the nervous system and helping people overcome chronic stresses and challenges that have been built up in their body that are preventing them from living their absolute best life.   Dr. Matt tells the story of how he and his wife came to learn their unique method and what that journey has been like up to this point, including really understanding the nervous system, the bio energetics of the body, how our nervous system processes life experiences, and how they get trapped in our body. He goes on to explain that as we begin to integrate and process those things built up within our body, we can express higher levels of health, well being and vitality. And then learning to be more adaptable, more resilient to the future stresses and challenges that come our way and moving through those things faster.    Dr. Matt not only works with nervous system health, but also with personal growth and development, learning about energy and quantum physics, vibration, and tone energy. We also discuss how this entire world and universe is actually made up in a whole different paradigm of understanding, and how cultivating hope for people can sometimes make the biggest difference.   This was an absolutely fascinating talk and one that has transformed our personal lives in a big way. Feeling under the weather (or are you expecting to feel that way given the time of year)? This episode was inspired by a post from a fellow mama friend with strong ties, passions and gifts in the health and wellness community. I first connected with Monica Smith back in the day when my husband Matthew and I interviewed her on our other podcast, Doing It At Home, to share her home birth story. Monica now has a thriving online community where she creates conversations around clean living. A recent post of hers addressed the “flu season.” So I'm sharing that post with you - some options for changing the narrative around “sick” and empowering our mindset around trusting in our bodies and the natural process of building our immunity. I AM NOT A DOCTOR nor is any of this medical advice. I just think it's great when we have options to address our health and we can explore ways for proactive and preventative care.  Cheers to your health! “Cities were the first Internet,” says archaeologist Monica Smith, because they were the first permanent places where strangers met in large numbers for entertainment, commerce, and romance. And the function and form of cities, she notes, have remained remarkably constant over their 6,000 years of history so far. Modern city dwellers would quickly find their way around any city in the past, given our shared architecture of broad avenues, monumental structures, and densely crowded residences. What we learn from examining the long history of cities is what makes them so freeing and empowering for humans and humanity. Density has always been crucial. So has infrastructure, skill specialization, cultural diversity, intense trade with other cities, an economy of acquiring and discarding objects, the delights of fashion and art, religious focus and political focus, intellectual ferment, and technological innovation. The digital internet has not replaced cities, nor is it likely that anything else will, Smith proposes, for the next 6,000 years. Monica L. Smith is an anthropology professor and also a professor in the Institute of the Environment and Sustainabilityat UCLA. She has done archeological fieldwork in India, Bangladesh, Madagascar, Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, Italy, and England. Her new book is Cities: The First 6,000 Years.

Today, more than one-half of the world's population lives in cities. In every corner of the world, people are moving to cities at a rapid and geometric pace. The urban migration taking place today is both historic and inevitable. Our cities represent the ultimate triumph and organizing principle of humanity. They are more than either the concrete jungle portrayed by Billy Wilder in the Lost Weekend, or the human zoo, that Desmond Morris claimed. The great San Francisco columnist, Herb Caen, one said of cities, “that they should not be judged just by their length and width, but by the broadness of their vision and the height of their dreams.” They are, in some ways, the ultimate achievements of mankind. Few understand them better than Monica L. Smith, a professor of anthropology and professor in the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at the UCLA where she holds a chair in Indian Studies and serves as the director of the South Asian Archeology Laboratory in the Cotsen Institute of Archeology. She is the author, most recently of Cities: The First 6,000 Years My conversation with Monica Smith:

Normally we talk about home birth, healthy pregnancy, and share home birth stories. But we also want to bring conversations about new parenthood because that's extremely relevant to many of our listeners (and also to ourselves).  On episode 45 Matthew and I interviewed new mom Monica Smith, and me and Monica really hit it off. So much so that we started having weekly phone calls where we opened up to one another about the challenges we were facing in new motherhood. The conversations were so honest and raw that we decided to record them for you all, because we know we're not the only ones with these feelings. So what you're hearing is a recorded conversation between Monica and myself. There is no structure to the call, we're simply sharing from our hearts how we're feeling in the moment. In today's episode we're talking to mama, Monica Smith. Monica and her husband Matt welcomed their son Rocky into the world 7 months ago, and they’re such a beautiful family (pictures on our website confirm this so check those out). Both chiropractors, Monica and Matt are used to environments that support home birth and back it up with the philosophy of trusting the body and its amazing ability to heal. Monica is a well of knowledge. She’s also incredibly insightful. Her perspectives on the body, women and birth are enough to get you pumped up and inspired to take on the world! We cover all kinds of topics like tiny house (she and Matt lived in a 275 sq. ft. home for a period of time!) and simplified living, which has transferred over into their parenting styles. We explore what happens when your birth vision does not match up with the actual experience (and how that can be a great thing). Monica also went 42 weeks and 6 days into her pregnancy! Holy mama, right?! Not to mention, she ties in the value of chiropractic care for pregnancy and preparing for home birth (we utilized chiropractic care in our pregnancy and highly recommend it). Monica embodies pregnant intuition - listening to your body, and then using that to influence other areas of your life. And can birth actually be a mirror for who you are in your life?
