Come along as Petra talks to Grace McArthur for our reccuring segment, Atlas of the Heart. Grace and Petra unpack the wisdom from Brené Brown's book of the same name, this time having a look at the chapter on vulnerability Later on in the episode, Petra talks to Dr Michael Frost. This week on Transmissions, return guest Yasmin Williams. On October 4th, she releases Acadia via Nonesuch Records. It's her long awaited follow up to 2021's Urban Driftwood, and like that record, it's beautiful—a showcase for a one-of-a-kind artist. And while the focus remains Williams' fluid and lyrical guitarwork, she's joined by a roster of ringers to help fill out the corners: Aoife O'Donovan, Dom Flemons, Kaki King, William Tyler, and Darklingside and Rich Ruth, whose vocal and synthesizer contributions can be heard on the recently released first single, "Virga." Williams first came back on the show way back in the lockdown days, but life has changed greatly for her since then. She discusses some of those changes, and opens up about her desire to create with Acadia something of a refuge from the chaos of the world. Even though the record finds her joined by an expanded cast, it feels even more personal. In carving out enough space for herself, Williams has opened more than enough for the listener too. Ahead of her fall tour dates with Brittany Howard and Michael Kiwanuka and an appearance at London's Pitchfork Music Fest in November, Williams joins host Jason P. Woodbury for a rousing conversation. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. Welcome, to Podcast Episode 184 featuring John Walker and Putnam Murdock. They are friends and a singer-songwriter team who also work together as playwrights. John has, as he describes, "some experience writing screenplays" and Putnam is a seasoned singer-songwriter and teacher. Putnam Grafton Murdock has performed throughout the US and is a middle school music and theatre teacher at  Friends Academy in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. They have completed one stage play “A Friend's One Man Show” and are working on another play incorporating Putnam's music background. The play, however, is not a traditional musical. As of this podcast episode recording, “A Friend's One Man Show” has been through one table reading at Friends Academy in 2021 and a staged reading at Moses Brown High School in Providence, Rhode Island in 2023. Their creative process has evolved since they began writing together in the fall of 2019 before the pandemic. When the pandemic started, they discovered they could meet more often online. John Daniel Walker is a California State University, Northridge graduate and a transplanted Fairhavenite from San Diego, California. According to John, "While the platform was a bit impersonal at first, we took the opportunity to dedicate ourselves to the creative process which, supplemented our therapy sessions that were no longer taking place." The process has allowed them to take time, revise, and edit often. it also allowed the duo to include their most honest selves in the characters. According to the friends and playwrights, while publication is a dream for the play, their goal has been to create and steep themselves in the process of writing. As a touring artist, Putnam started as a professional musician with the Colorado rock and roll band Chief Broom. He was the frontman. The group achieved a slot on the 1997 H.O.R.D.E tour, appeared in festivals at Red Rocks Amphitheater and sold out venues throughout the western United States. After graduating with a songwriting degree from Berklee School in Music in 2002, Murdock launched a solo career and has since traveled across the country performing with artists such as Martin Sexton, Taj Mahal, Ben Taylor, Gregory Alan Isakov, and Kaki King. Putnam Murdock describes his music as being steeped in old-time folk, country, and blues.his songwriting presents an honest voice of Americana music. As a one-man band or a full ensemble, the intimacy remains obvious in his contemporary sonic collages or classic ballads. His fourth studio release, "Long Time To Make Old Friends, was recorded at Bunker Studios in 2022. John Walker and Putnam Murdock speak with The Artists Index's cofounder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier, about their collaboration and interests.. This episode was recorded with Zoom. The Artists Index uses Zoom to accommodate our guests' schedules and to allow them to remain in the comfort of their homes, especially those who no longer live on the South Coast of Massachusetts.  Our home base and recording studio is located in Spectrum Marketing Group in Howland Place in New Bedford.  If you would like to be a guest on The Artists Index or have a suggestion, please let us know! Dit nummer was destijds baanbrekend als mix van funk, jazz, hiphop, dance en een vleugje rock. Rockit presenteert elk jaar artiesten die een nieuw ‘sterrenstelsel' willen betreden door jazz als uitgangspunt te nemen, maar veel verder gaan dan dat. Today's guest is guitarist Kaki King, who lands herself on those 100 top guitarist lists dominated by men. Rolling Stone has described her as “a genre unto herself.” I spoke to her when she released Modern Yesterdays, her 9th studio album, out now on Cantaloupe Records. I can't wait to share our vibrant discussion on her earliest guitar memories, finding her distinct musical voice and what it's like to be a female guitar virtuoso in a famously dude bro arena. After a "false start" due to technical problems, we gain insight into various world music, musicians, and instrumentation via Joshua Thomson (alto Saxophone, Flute) and Josh Peters (Oud, Lavta), the core members of Austin's Atlas Maior. Since their inception more than a decade ago, this evolving ensemble of eclectic musicians have been steadily creating original compositions combining elements of progressive jazz with Middle Eastern, Latin American, traditional Indian, and other worldly musical styles. “Riptide combines the fire and excitement of eastern musical culture with probing, Coltrane-like solos from Joshua Thomson on sax.” - The Jazz Journal To date the acclaimed group has released 5 albums and several singles, each pushing boundaries and exploring new harmonic and rhythmic territory. Incorporating an array of ethnic musical systems (such as the Middle Eastern maqamat modes) and instrumentation into something uniquely their own, Atlas Maior has received many accolades in their tenure, including the City of Austin's Proclamation of March 27th as "Atlas Maior Day". They have toured both on their native soil as well as through France, Spain, and Turkey and have opened internationally for such praised artists as Kaki King, Vieux Farka Toure and Tal National. Atlas Maior has also performed at prestigious music festivals such as SXSW, Pueblos Blancos, Wobeonfest, and the City of Austin's F1 Fanfest, and have collaborated with a plethora of talented musicians across the world including Lou Lou Ghelichkani of Thievery Corporation, Raquy Danziger, Ali Pervez Mehdi, Fared Shafinury, Indajit Banerjee, and Alan Chehab Quartet We talk about projects past and present, the Austin of yore, the two Josh's early influences and musical backgrounds in both Michigan and Texas, and the importance of consistent practice, performance and professionalism. Hrishikesh Hirway has been making music for as long as he can remember and, as an adult, spent years building a career in the industry, writing, performing, producing, and touring. But, it was a moment where he took a bit of a pause to re-evaluate that led him to record an interview with a friend about the story and creative decisions behind a song that would change everything. That conversation eventually became the opening episode of the podcast, Song Exploder, which itself then exploded into a global phenomenon that I've been obsessed with since hearing that first episode. “In terms of research of things that really benefit us and keep us on an even keel, mindfulness research is just off the charts effective.”—  Scott McBeanCreativity can be a lot of things: a way to make money, a way to bring joy… and even a mindfulness practice.Pastor and mental health counsellor Scott McBean treats creativity as a source of positivity and a powerful way to maintain his mental health. His creative practices are little things that bring him joy, such as playing guitar or doing family photography. He also sees creative exercises as opportunities for mindfulness.Scott is a strong believer in the physical and psychological benefits of mindfulness, which is about so much more than just meditation.A few mornings per week, he'll read poetry for 15-20 minutes and then write his own poem. For Scott, this exercise serves as a mindfulness practice.“People often think that that looks like something like centering prayer, or sitting in silence and stillness, or counting your breaths and things like that. Those are mindfulness practices, absolutely, but mindfulness practices are also things that engage other senses, too,” Scott says. “Writing...  being out in nature… taking dedicated time to engage each of your five senses serves the same function as some kind of stereotypical mindfulness practice of sitting in silence somewhere.”Painting, dancing, or even something like washing dishes can be practiced mindfully and creatively. In‌ ‌this‌ ‌episode,‌ ‌you'll discover:‌ ‌How you can transform a surprising number of activities into mindfulness practices  Why the ‘tortured artist' trope exists — and how pain and creativity became linked What makes all the difference when it comes to creating good art v. mediocre artAbout Scott McBeanScott is a pastor and mental health counsellor at Northstar Community, a recovery ministry in Richmond, VA. By most accounts, the heyday of the guitar as a pop cultural force is several decades in the past. But every so often, an artist emerges who breathes new life into the instrument. A musician happy to explore the fringes of her own musical boundaries, Kaki King’s instrument music is consistently fresh and nearly impossible to categorize. Released during the pandemic, Modern Yesterdays finds the guitarist finding new ways to interact and promote her music, stuck at home in Brooklyn with her young family. In this wide ranging interview, we discuss the development of King’s sound and the personal and professional lessons over the course of this very strange year.

“Modern Yesterdays” Over the course of her career, the Georgia-born, NYU-educated Kaki King has put out nine spellbinding albums, including her 2003 debut Everybody Loves You, the staggering 2006 effort Until We Felt Red and her brand new one Modern Yesterdays. Kaki King is a force. But she’s the kind of force that you can’t really define. She plays guitar like nobody else—and whether she’s incorporating jazz or flamenco or post rock, whatever she does sounds like something nobody’s ever done. Her percussive style and her fret tappings and her open tunings are beyond us to explain in a technical sense so let's just say this: Kaki King plays the guitar with an otherworldly flair. But even that falls short. Kaki King is a Jedi. And what we mean by that is what she does is so special, so rare and so staggering, when you listen to her play you can feel the force at work. And you can’t put words to it—you only know that what she’s doing is one of the great mysteries of the universe. And though that mystery is mysterious to us civilians, Kaki is in complete control of her gift and she’s fluid, she’s powerful and she’s got the kind of percussive finesse that’s about as mystical as it gets. If you know her music you know what we’re talking about. And if you know her music you know that there’s not way to talk about it. In this conversation Kaki talks to Alex about life during quarantine with two small children, how normal it will actually feel when things go to normal and her love of Spoon...

Guitarist Kaki King is perhaps best-known for her virtuosic instrumental guitar compositions and extended technique, but she’s also written songs, chamber music, and film scores. She’s come up with innovations that change the nature of the guitar itself; she taps, she bends, she projects onto the guitar body, and now she has added a bridge called a Passerelle to her guitar. A Passerelle is a bridge that turns any regular six string guitar into a twelve note zither-like creation that can produce sounds reminiscent of the Japanese koto or Chinese guzheng, and sounds really cool when she bends the note.   She uses the Passerelle on her new album Modern Yesterdays, made at the beginning of March in the year 2020, as the entire world changed. The album was perhaps not what she set out to make, but it is a guitar record with lots of sound design, influenced by the pandemic. Some of the pieces might also be related to her latest multimedia work, “Data Not Found” which involves projections onto a special guitar which, when certain notes are played, triggers certain images or visuals. (Coming soon, in the after-times.) For this Soundcheck Podcast, Kaki King joins us to discuss Big Issues like getting COVID19, the mysterious creative process, and fingernail care. She also nerds out about her family of fretted instruments (guitars, modified guitars, high-strung guitar, harp guitar), and plays some new songs.   Set list: “Teek,” ”Puzzle Me You” “Doing the Wrong Thing” "Teek" "Puzzle Me You": "Doing the Wrong Thing"

What is the audience's role in live performances? When Bill Bragin, executive director of the NYUAD Arts Centre, arrived in Abu Dhabi in 2014, he was on a mission to bring performance art to the city. Not just any performance art, however – performance art that challenged its audience, excelled in its field and pushed the boundaries of the genre itself. This season's performances at NYUAD Arts Centre are no different. The programme consists of an eclectic mix of artists, all of whom have built their careers by making engaging art that encourages audience participation. Bragin says the local community is primed to embrace the unknown, something which he wanted to reflect in the centre's programming. Host Razmig Bedirian, culture writer at The National, is joined by Bragin to talk about the upcoming events in the Arts Centre spring programme. Artists who are pushing the boundaries of their genre such as Kaki King, Kid Koala, Circus Abyssinia and performace duo Kaneza Schaal and Christopher Myers.

Soundfly exists to help curious musicians anywhere achieve their musical goals. Their learning model pairs high-quality online content (courses & articles) with highly personalized 1:1 musical coaching via trained expert musicians called Soundfly Mentors. Soundfly was founded a couple years ago to fill a gap in credible, accessible music education online. They now serve hundreds of thousands of musicians a month, with daily articles, more than 40 online courses, and a growing roster of experienced Soundfly Mentors on-hand. In the past couple of years, they have partnered with and worked with some of the best names in music, including Carnegie Hall, NYU, Grammy-winning and -nominated musicians and engineers such as Brian Losch, Joe Lambert, and Marin Alsop, guirar legend Kaki King, YouTube star Andrew Huang, and many more. Their mentor-based learning model is built on proven educational methods such as project-based learning, social accountability, and recall, whereas most online learning platforms provide only passive experiences. Soundfly is providing a home for the creative and curious to discover something new and take a leap forward in their musical journey in whatever way works best for them. They stand for a love of learning that works, accessibility, and a celebration of every artist's unique musical voice, regardless of genre, style, or approach. Guest Info  Ian Temple is a composer, pianist, and entrepreneur. Before founding Soundfly, he was a founding partner and COO for The Future Project, one of the country's fastest growing education non-profits that works with high schoolers to pursue and realize their dreams. As a musician, he's recorded and produced multiple albums with his original projects, toured North America, Europe, and Asia with his experimental trio Sontag Shogun, and scored works for film and video, including the award-winning short film Rosa: These Storms. Ian is passionate about developing new and better ways to unlock the artist and artistic potential within everyone.

Also, hear new music by Molly Joyce for cellist Nick Photinos, new work from Kaki King & the Porta Girevole Chamber Orchestra, and more. Hear ambient-gothic music from Norwegian bassist Jo Berger Myhre and Icelandic drummer Ólafur Björn Ólafsson  in their composed work, “1000%,” which was recorded in an abandoned Reykjavik warehouse.  Also, listen to driving indie jazz from the Danish experimental ensemble, Girls in Airport, recorded live in Germany. Plus, hear a sample from Brooklyn's own Afrobeat big band, Antibalas.  There’s a new release from Chicago’s “interdisciplinary instrumental music and performance ensemble” – or circus-spectacle alt marching band, Mucca Pazza. It’s a bit proggy (Yes, Weather Report, Rush) and perhaps hard to march to, but “[t]he band spent eight years practicing counting to seven before they were ready to record this piece.” There’s also a new work by Terry Riley for Del Sol String Quartet, “Dark Queen Mantra,” featuring guitarist Gyan Riley. Plus listen to music by Kaki King - arranged for guitar and orchestra from her forthcoming Live At Berklee release. Listen to music from Eighth Blackbird founding cellist Nick Photinos; it’s a work by Molly Joyce, originally for for baroque cello and pre-recorded electronics, called “Sit and Dance.” Also, there’s music from London-based composer & producer Leah Kardos, which was made using analogue instruments and technologies, from her record, Rococochet. Emily Elbert weaves together a rhythmic funk-folk blend that is equal parts introspection and celebration. With a global spirit and do-it-yourself passion, the nomadic songstress has lovingly carried her songs around the world, playing over a thousand independent shows, from Peru to Palestine. These experiences are reflected in her music, touching on the personal, the divine, and the universality that lies in between – a tribute to the timeless, fused with progressive perspective. She has opened for acts including G. Love & Special Sauce, Victor Wooten, Kaki King, Leon Russell, Robben Ford, and Richie Havens, and collaborated with artists ranging from Ben Taylor to Dweezil Zappa. Emily’s music has garnered praise from publications like the Washington Post, Utne Reader, and Glamour Magazine, won awards in the U.S. and U.K., and attracted more than 1.5 million YouTube views. She has independently released four albums and is currently touring as a member of Esperanza Spalding’s new project, Emily’s D+Evolution. The Boston Folk Festival notes, “Emily is among the most glowing of the upcoming generation of American singer-songwriters, if ‘upcoming’ even applies to this phenom any longer.” For more, go to www.emilyelbert.com.

Worst Gig Ever with Geoff Garlock and Mike Pace

We head "down to the crossroads" with amazing guitarist/songwriter/person Kaki King, who delivers worst gig tale goods with the classic trifecta of accidents, innapropriate venues, and food poisoning.  We also delve into Kaki's appreciation of new age music, her drumming skills, performing with the Foo Fighters, how she deals with press, and performing at school graduations.  Fonts of fingerpicking on this week's WORST GIG EVER!
