John began playing drums at the age of 5 in Oakland California. Oakland proved to be a perfect incubator for John as he thrived playing in many of the school, community, rock, jazz, and funk bands in the area. This experience gave John a diverse background that continues to serve him well today. Early in his career, John was playing in local bands opening for such diverse acts as George Benson, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Who (two North American tours), and many more. John's reputation quickly grew and he found himself playing with San Francisco/Oakland bay area legends including Joshua Redman, Lenny Williams (Tower of Power), and Miles Davis band alumni Barry Finnerty, Garth Webber, and Benny Rietveld. John continued to cast his net as wide as possible. He began getting calls from New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, and New Orleans to audition with such artists as Pee Wee Ellis, Stephen Jenkins (Third Eye Blind), Cake, and many more. These experiences gave John national exposure which has led to local, touring, and/or studio dates with Josh Groban, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, Pat Benatar, Steve Miller, Booker T., Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Oz Noy and many more. John has played multiple productions of Hamilton in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Puerto Rico and tours and records with Carl Verheyen. In this episode, John talks about: The resume he amassed in the Bay Area before moving to LA Thinking of different theatre shows as different “dialects” His experience of playing multiple productions of Hamilton Getting called out by his musical director for going on auto pilot The process of constant refinement over the course of a show The broader palate he gets to use with Carl Verheyen

Acoustic Guitarist Mark Kroos is a phenomenal musician, and a great example for men to follow "Mark Kroos is one of the most intelligent musical forces of the new guitar generation." - Randall Williams In this conversation with Mark Kroos on the Manlihood ManCast, we talk about his music, the challenges of life on the road, overcoming adversity, and more. Double-Neck Guitarist Mark Kroos plays an Ovation guitar with two necks at the same time. His shows are energetic, magnetic, and Mark's personality is as welcoming as his playing is spectacular. In 2011, Mark competed in Guitar Player Magazine's International Guitar Superstar Competition in Nashville for host Larry Carlton and renowned judges Muriel Anderson, Reeves Gabrels and Carl Verheyen, taking 1st place out of 5 invited competitors and thousands of others who had submitted online. Facing hardship “like a man” In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, one of the things that Mark talks about is the things he learned when covid shut down his ability to tour with his music. That experience deeply affected the way he processes things as a man. I see a guy on the street, and I think, ‘that dude has his act together!' But I've had a lot of really great moments over the past few years and realizing that, nobody has their act together. It feels really freeing and incredible to see that. We try to appear hard, walking with our shoulder back, and chests out, and so much of this work over the past year has been about softening, and not taking myself so seriously. Because I really felt for a long time my guitar career was the most important thing in the world to me. Then I saw the world without my guitar career. The world was doing just fine. Stu Hamm is one of the world’s premier bass players and clinicians. His unique and innovative two-handed tapping technique proves that even the bass can be a solo instrument in the hands of a virtuoso player. He’s appeared on a slew of magazine covers, released 8 solo albums, has a number of signature basses, and has a number of instructional videos. During the interview we traded Frank Zappa stories, spoke about how Stu adapted his style from traditional walking bass, how he incorporated tapping into his technique, pain management from playing, and much more. The album features Supertramp guitar legend Carl Verheyen and drummer Chad Wakerman, who is best known for his work with Frank Zappa and Allan Holdsworth. Says Micha, “ ‘Double Take’, my first full length release, reflects my relationship with the US and my journey to come and in the end live here. After I was already established in Europe with steady gigs and my own recording studio, the artist in me was still not happy and I needed to go and check out the source and birthplaces of the music and ‘sound’ I was most inspired by: Jazz, Blues and Rock. My first trip was a 3 month driving loop starting and ending in NYC all the way through New Orleans, Austin, LA, San Francisco and back. Songs like ‘Travel Song’ and ‘Texaleans’ reflect that time. Later I lived in Austin/Texas for a while and you can hear that ‘Stevie Ray’ sound in my songs ‘Ford F-150’ and ‘Your Turn’ that also features a blazing solo by Carl Verheyen. Now living in LA more fusion influences came back to my writing in compositions like ‘Velocity’ and ‘5&6’.”

Saluting the great Charles Macklin

Charles Macklin's long life bookended two pivotal points in Irish history. Born weeks after William of Orange's 1690 triumph by the banks of the Boyne, he died the year before the 1798 Rebellion, just shy of 107. A giant of the London stage, his life had all the ingredients for a great play – lust, greed, murder, envy, ambition and talent. Not the sort of fellow you might think should be honoured hundreds of years later, but thankfully he is. In the Actors' church of St. Paul's in London's Covent Garden, all of the good and the great actors have plaques on the walls in their memory. On the right hand side of the church is one of the more prominent memorials to the 'father of the modern stage' no less. In theatreland, Macklin has both a street and a hallowed plaque to remember him. His hometown of Culdaff puts on an annual festival in October saluting the man. Now in its 24th year, the current festival that finishes up today was a great success. Nearby Enniskillen has managed to establish an annual Samuel Beckett festival on a tenuous connection relating back to his time at school there. It has the money behind it, but Macklin has soul and what it lacks in big budgets and marketing, it makes up for in generous hospitality and a vibrancy that warms the heart. At the centre of the festival is local historian Dr. Sean Beattie, a one man publishing machine who launched his latest book, 'Donegal in Transition' on the opening Thursday night. Weeks ago, he launched a monumental book called 'The Atlas of Donegal' which he co-edited and wrote several chapters on. The man is 73, but has the stamina and looks of a man in his early fifties and he shows no signs of slowing up. I'll be very disappointed if there isn't another book from the good doctor by Christmas! Another stalwart of the festival is Dessie McCallion. Another walking encyclopaedia, he literally becomes one on the Saturday of the festival with the Great Macklin Walk. It's Dessie at his best – out in the open, explaining the flora, the fauna and the folklore as he ventures along with forty or so followers. Never didactic, just full of stories and mischief and good humour; he has been the peninsula's best ambassador for years. The backbone of the festival though firmly rests with the talents of the McGrory family who run the legendary McGrory's of Culdaff. Anne is a networking supremo and has that natural welcoming charm that makes a visit there worthwhile. John ensures the music for which it is famous, keeps on coming in and Neil is the one who likes to go for detail, be it local heritage or rigging up the Backroom for a concert. It's a formidable combination and together it ensures that the venue is known throughout the country. On Friday night alone, they had master guitarist Carl Verheyen of Supertramp fame playing with his band. Another McGrory, Deirdre Devine, is a local artist who has written a book on local artist, Willie Doran. She was lucky enough to have known Willie in the years up to 1979 when he came back to live and work in his native Culdaff. Willie's talent ranged from landscape to portraits, but also cartoons, signage and remarkably, converting sods of turf into resplendent Irish homesteads. All were on display in the Wee Hall in an exhibition called ‘101 Recollections of Willie Doran'. They'd missed the centenary in 2012, but this was no Room 101 – look out for the forthcoming Joe Mahon TV special on Willie's talents. On the Saturday of the festival, there were two creative workshops run by Maureen Boyle and Malachi O'Doherty respectively. Malachai's morning slot entitled ‘Telling your own Story' was on writing a memoir, something he is adept at doing having written four. The key question to be asked was ‘what lesson did I understand from such and such an episode happening to me?'. It made for a lively two hours which flew by in no time. Maureen's class entitled ‘Building a Paper House' focused on the notion of home and pl...
