It's everyone's least favorite time at the movies: Dumpuary. January and February are always pretty weak months at the theater, so Jackson and Carter are joined by Jeff Brown to spice up the beginning of the year. Introducing a mini series that will run through February: Seeing Double. Each week, Jackson, Carter and Jeff will bring 2 movies that they either look back fondly on to see if they still hold up, or just explore whether a certain movie is as bad as people say it is. This week, the boys have selected "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" and "Eagle Eye" for their double feature conversation. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jackson-mahuron/support

For this episode we watched the 2013 action/adventure/comedy (?) "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" starring Jeremy Renner & Gemma Arterton. Loosely based on the traditional fairy tale, this movie was... polarizing. Let's just say that we don't agree. On what? And by how much? Tune in to find out! This week Taylor & Nick recommend two movies that riff on classic tales. Up first, Taylor recommends Young Sherlock Holmes. Despite having Steven Spielberg as a producer, this Indiana Jones-inspired take on the Holmes stories remains little known. Next, Nick recommends the Jeremy Renner-fronted Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. A guilty-pleasure flick, the movie transforms the titular duo into witch-slaying action heroes. __________ Taylor Zaccario…Host, Director, Producer, Writer Nick Zaccario…Host, Director, Producer, Editor

We all may be in the thick of our holiday merriment, but we've got some Halloween closure to tend to (as if it ever really closes). There is an extensive list of titles that we all watched before this episode which we think makes for a pretty killer group of recommendations! Welcome to the spookiest of seasons, kind friends and patrons! We know you know that all year is spooky season but we're now in the thick of the time where hopefully we can wear sweaters and stuff while we do our spooky bidding. This intro to October brings you the first in a series of films that we'll be releasing EACH WEEK during the month! That's right, a SHUDcast a week keeps your ears super bleak (but like in a good way). We kick it off here with… some pretty typical oddball talk up front but bring everything home with John Carpenter's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS — the final entry in the unofficial “Apocalypse Trilogy”. Season's Screamings to all!   00:00 - 22:40ish Intros: Cody learns of the existence of ‘Natural Harvest', Curtis brings Skyline Chili back from Ohio, and Austin plans surprise revenge against Cody.   22:40ish - 1:08:20ish What we watched these weeks! Jaws (Austin's wife, Kaylin, had never seen it), The Ruins, Mimic, Edward Scissorhands, Hatching, RRR (Austin finally did it), Bodies Bodies Bodies (Lucas was the first one to get to this but stay tuned because we all get to it), The Boys (Cody finished it, it's the best show maybe ever), Scary Movie, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Bullet Train, Here Comes Hell, The Predator, Predators (Cody clarifies that he did Curtis dirty), AvP and AvP: Requiem, Hellboy (2019 – Curtis did a rewatch), Predator, , Spider-Man (2002), Nope (Curtis took his parents!), Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, and….   1:08:20ish - 1:27:00ish PREY (we loved it so much we went a little deep)   1:27:00ish - 2:09:30ish IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS - SHUDdown and discussion   2:09:30ish - End - Our next movie!

This week Danielle revisits another classic fairy tale in the 2013 film Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. When, as children, Hansel and his sister Gretel are left in the woods by their parents for what will turn out to be stupid reasons, they encounter and manage to kill a witch. They decide to go pro and become full time witch hunters, which is very convenient considering there's currently a witch plague across the land. Now adults, Hansel and Gretel dispense deadly justice against witches, handing down verdicts based on nothing more than whether or not they look witchy enough. This, as Sam and Danielle both agree, is a terrible means of witch detection, and Sam is convinced that, from the witches' perspective, this is more akin to a witch genocide. The pair of professional murders eventually encounter a grand witch (which is apparently a thing) who's stealing children in order to produce a spell for fireproofing herself. This is baffling to Sam as Hansel and Gretel seem to use pretty much any method they want to dispose of witches, fire or not. Nonetheless, there's also some good witches involved who were hitherto unknown to H&G, so who knows how many "good" witches they murdered over the years. None of that really matters because all Danielle and Sam care about is the morally conflicted troll named Edward, who is just the best. Also, this whole thing is steampunk because this movie needs to find every way possible to annoy Sam.

God lytting!

What happened to Hansel and Gretel after their encounter with the child-eating witch? That's what Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013) aims to explain. Directed by Tommy Wirkola, H&G:WH stars Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, and Famke Janssen--and a troll named Edward. This fantasy horror wasn't for everyone, and didn't make a lot of money domestically. Yet across the world, this film racked up the dough. We ended up divided on this film, with one of us finding it to be a schlocky, yet fun-filled romp... while the other found it just schlocky. It's definitely not for everybody, but H&G:WH has etched out a cult status for itself somewhere out there. We also discuss the scariest movies we've ever seen--which is really any movie for Scott. We'd love to hear from you, so email us at TheCriticalBreakdownPodcast@gmail.com. We're also accepting ratings and reviews at iTunes, or any other podcatching app you use.
