When was the last time you were genuinely playful at work? If you are like most of us, it might have been a while. We've been conditioned to believe that work and play don't really mix. Not only we've been taught to draw a clear demarcation line between work and play, we've also been convinced that work is somehow way more noble and more important that play. But what if truly great work couldn't happen without a healthy dose of play? What if, unless we can have fun with the work itself, at least occasionally, we can't really achieve greatness? Today's conversation with Gary Ware, the Founder of Breakthrough Play a keynote speaker, and author of the book Playful Rebellion: Maximize Workplace Success Through the Power of Play addresses these questions. Gary talks about the relationship of workplace productivity and play, play as the driver of innovation and performance, the eight play personalities and how we can integrate purposeful play into our workday. If you are one of the many people eating lunch at your desk and working too many hours a day, this episode is going to change your life! Today's guest, Gary Ware, is an advocate for the importance of fun; not only does incorporating play into your life make you happier and healthier, it actually makes you better at what you do! Tune in today to hear how to rebel against the idea that work and play don't mix and turn your world into a playground! Meet Gary Ware: Gary Ware, the Founder of Breakthrough Play, is a corporate facilitator, keynote speaker, certified coach, and author of the book Playful Rebellion. Gary has over 14 years of experience in the corporate world, where he has held various leadership positions. Gary also comes with nearly a decade of experience as a performer in improvisation theatre. After experiencing burnout in his pursuit of success and happiness, he realized that what was missing was play! Gary now uses the power of applied improvisation and other playful methods to assist people in unlocking creativity, confidence, and better communication. Episode Highlights: Don't conflate hard work and burnout. Work can be hard, but it shouldn't lead to burnout. The core concept of Gary's book, Playful Rebellion, is that we need to learn to see work “as a playground rather than a proving ground.” [01:34] Set time aside every day for play. For example, after each meeting you have during the course of your work day, block out ten minutes in your calendar to dance, read a book, play with legos, or whatever works for you! When you get back to work, you will find that you are much more engaged and productive. [03:43] Mezzo-rest (as opposed to micro-rest) occurs when you take more than just a short break from your work to do something creative. Research has shown that people who have hobbies outside of work are more successful than those who don't. [09:26] Celebrate your failures! If you're not making mistakes, you're probably not pushing any boundaries, which probably means you aren't growing. So, embrace your failures because they are a sign of growth. [16:57] Find allies on your Playful Rebellion journey. These are the people who will play with you in the workplace, support you during challenging times, and make your working world lighter, brighter, and more fun. Gary Ware was working as a VP at a digital ad agency when he realized that  being completely depleted, feeling broken, and having no drive to do anything was perhaps *not* normal. Gary was experiencing what many of us have faced, especially during the pandemic—burnout. So Gary took an improv class and realized play is what was missing in his life. On the podcast this week, Gary chats with Erica about his journey from burnout to breakthrough by incorporating play and games into the work day. He illustrates how applied improvisation and games help teams and colleagues unlock creativity, confidence, and better communication. Gary shares the challenges of reimagining in-person games to an online environment once the pandemic hit, signs an employee may be on the verge of burnout, why playing a silly game as a team before a client call can make everything go more smoothly, and why sense of intimacy must be created if we want to form a genuine connection.  Please Subscribe, Rate and Review on Apple Podcasts You can also listen to the show on: StitcherOvercast GoogleSpotify Resources:Quotes:On his former position: “The vibe was, ‘You sleep when you're dead. Hey, you know what, we're here to work, we're here to work hard.' It was interesting because it was, ‘work hard, play hard,' however there was no playing at all. When you work a 12-hour day and then you go home, the last thing you want to do when you go home is do anything other than sleep.”“As a leader you can start to understand, are people showing up to meetings and *not* bringing their whole selves? And I don't think it's intentional. When you're running at that [overworked] level for so long, you start to deplete yourself. Are people being a little bit more cynical than before? Those are some of the early signs that people may be starting to burn themselves out.”“That's the beauty of play. Play is pleasurable and when you're in true play you want to share with other people.”“We started creating psychological safety just by playing these silly games. We started seeing the purpose of, ‘Oh, wow, this is actually helping us listen better. This is helping us connect better with each other.' And of course, performance increased.”“One of the cool things about [the 5 Things game] is that it starts to prime your brain to look for connections, to look for these blind spots. And then when we would go into meetings, we would be more open to suggestions from our clients. We would actually see [more] ways that we could help our clients.”“When the pandemic first happened and everything stopped being in person and went virtual, it was challenging. How can we create this intimacy when we are miles apart, on camera, and people are stressed out. And so I had to reimagine everything. I had to essentially dissect all my activities and say, ‘Alright, what's the purpose here. Can it work in a virtual environment?' But in the spirit of ‘Yes, and,' I would go into these meetings, and I would just be quite frank with them, and I'd say, ‘Look, I get it. You've probably been on Zoom meeting after Zoom meeting, and the last thing that you want is to do some silly games.' And I would just call out the current environment. And by doing that, it creates this level playing field of like, ‘Alright, cool. You're not trying to sugar coat this situation like nothing wrong is going on in the world.'”“When you create a sense of intimacy, that's where the oxytocin happens. The power of play -- yes as in fun! Yes as in games!  Yes as in whatever is playful to you!  In this episode, Gary Ware of Breakthrough Play shares how we {adults!} can find and use play to help during times of stress. His personal journey through the corporate routines led him to return to childlike curiosity and learning how to incorporate play back into his days, along with research to support why it has the powerful impact that it does.  Turns out, the actual neurochemistry that takes place is extremely similar to the effects of meditation -- boosting feel good chemicals in the brain and all that follows. And guess what else -- "play" doesn't look the same for everyone or mean the same thing for everyone.  Gary explains the "play personalities" [free assessment below!] where you can connect with what makes you feel fun, it's not all jungle gyms and board games.Listen up and send to a friend who may use these uplifting reminders and more!Gary's Links:Breakthrough Play's websiteGary's Play Personality AssessmentThe Accountability Success Circle {ASC}Follow Gary on IG _______________________________________________

A 2022 PLAYbook to Re-Engage Marketing Teams with Gary Ware

The Mindful Marketer

Two years into the pandemic, things still feel heavy. To cope, some professionals have turned to self-medication versus meditation (or other healthy habits). For many of us marketers, our creative candles have flamed out. Instead of focusing on discussing the theme, "The Great Resignation," what if we made 2022 "The Year of PLAY?" In Episode 51, we explore the connection of PLAY to performance with my colleague, Gary Ware. You may think I'm glossing over the severity of the pandemic. I'm not. I recognize and feel the collective global trauma on a daily basis. Instead, I'm inviting you to sit in the sandbox for a bit, and try on a new perspective.  Let me offer additional context from Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk. He is the author of the seminal book, The Body Keeps the Score.  Van Der Kolk believes that we have become overly dependent on pharmacological solutions to address trauma and mental illness in Western cultures. He calls it the "brain-disease model."  The model overlooks four fundamental truths: 1) Restoring relationships and community is central to restoring well-being  2) Language gives us the power to change ourselves and others and find a shared sense of meaning;  3) We can regulate our physiology…through basic activities such as breathing, moving, and touching; and  4) We can change social conditions to create environments where we can feel safe and where we can thrive." PLAY enables all four. That was enough for me to reach out to Gary Ware. In this livestream he outlined the strategies that he uses with marketing and leadership teams to re-ignite creativity, trust, and passion. He is the president of Breakthrough Play in San Diego, CA. Tune in this episode of The Mindful Marketer now—  Re-Engage Your Marketing Team: The 2022 Playbook. Watch the replay on LinkedIn.   Some key moments include:  ✔️ The PLAY model helps us create the right environment for learning and experimentation. Ware has taught this framework at AARP, Intel, Salesforce, SAP, and Kaiser Permanente. The PLAYbook consists of these 4 qualities: #1 - Psychological safety: Create an environment where people aren't afraid of being judged. Allow yourself to say something vulnerable. This gives other permission to do the same. #2 - Listening: Leaders must always listen to understand. #3 - Adapt - Adaptability is crucial to play.  #4 - Y- "The Why" - how can you accept reality and build on it? ✔️ The PLAY model isn't a trite acronym. It is a proven way to re-ignite job satisfaction, trust, and team confidence, especially in high stakes situations. Most people think of play as "it's childish" or "it's what kids do." In reality, Ware points to proven science of how play helps engage teams. Listen to the replay on Stitcher.  ✔️PLAY helps you spend much less time repeating your messages–and hoping they stick.  Dr. Karyn Purvis conducted a study on how we learn and retain information. She found that creating a new synapse neural pathway requires about 400-420 repetitions before it sticks. However, you can shortcut that to as few as 10 repetitions if you add play. When you are playing, you are engaging all of your senses. Listen to the replay on Stitcher.  You create a sandbox for your employees to play by creating those elements. Listen to the replay on Stitcher.  ✔️ Being a PLAY-full culture starts with one step: Find the moments or rituals in your organization that could use more playfulness.  Then, set your intentions using a template from Tiny Habits author,  BJ Fogg: "Before we start our brainstorming session, I will take 5 minutes and brainstorm ideas by myself, because I know it will pry my brain to be more creative." May your holidays be PLAY-full! See you next year. Copyright 2021, Lisa Nirell. Are you curious about ways to share your gifts and your light with the world? My guest today, Pete Longworth is a creativity genius and will help you create content that serves humanity through your gifts. You're going to LOVE today's episode of The Awakened Being, because we are all CREATORS here to share our unique divinity. One of Pete's biggest passions is introducing people to themselves through photography and videography. His work is about revealing the layers buried deep within people to help them uncover their True Selves. This process is an awakening to deep beauty. Pete is also an expert at SEEING, and teaches that how you see things, and your ability to share your unique perspective with the world, is one of your greatest gifts. In today's era, everyone has a camera, and your unique perspective will set your content apart from others. It's not about having the fanciest, most expensive equipment. It's about authentically sharing your thoughts and feelings with others. If your content is disingenuous, it shows through and dulls your message. It's important to ask yourself, “Why am I creating? What drives me?” And when you start to create, notice what comes up for you. Strip away the notion of creating for others, and make it for you. Let your perspective inform composition and remember that your mood and energy affect your subject. Take responsibility for your own energy. Give yourself grace to enjoy the playground of creativity and putting content out into the world. Apply these, and many more tips that you'll discover once you press play on today's episode of The Awakened Being, and watch your creativity create transformation in the world. Now is the time! To find a way to bring your message to the world, harness your energy, and create. It doesn't have to be hard -- just start creating, and be authentic. The Awakened Being - Conversations to Create Change

This episode reminds me of why I created this space in the first place. And also why I share my vulnerability, authenticity, and experience. I've felt called to share my own journey to give you a roadmap to heal trauma from any time in your life. The traumatic experience I had recently shook my core foundation. But I know our mess becomes our message, and that's why it's important to learn to transmute your trauma into your greatest strengths. Before we dive into what happened, we'll go in depth into how trauma happens. It's not an event, it's an inability to express the event. There's no releasing point. Life is a contraction to expand and release, and it allows us to go deeper into our being. It may be easier to understand with a personal story, which is what I'm sharing in this episode today. It's not just about what happened, but also how I responded to it, and how this influenced my processing. As I was experiencing what I was moving through, it was important to feel fully seen, witnessed, and expressed. Even though a part of me has wanted to ignore it and move on, I know that speaking and sharing is part of my healing. I reframed the way I understood what happened without giving my power away to the event. I will share in this episode how you can transmute trauma and heal. You don't have to live with the effects of trauma. Transmuting can require time and space, and you can also simply allow it to move through. Remember that you are your own greatest teacher, so call on your inner alchemist and prepare to heal and transform. Enjoy today's episode of The Awakened Being – Conversations to Create Change, giving you the tools you require to transmute trauma and heal. What are our options for sovereignty and agency over our own bodies and minds? And how can we alchemize our healing to bring ourselves to unity? With the GREATEST Awakening of our planet that has begun and we've experienced over the last 18 months, many people have experienced their own struggle with their individual truth. Everyone has differing viewpoints and perspectives, whether they want to participate or not in what's happening in all the forms we've been told to participate, and coming to harmony with everyone in their own sacred has right that we can live in unity and peace with everyone honored in their own truth. Where we can come together is shedding judgement on each other's choices and beliefs. Today on the show, I'm joined by one of my life long Soul Family & Soul Beloved Dallas Michael Cyr. Dallas is a public speaker and master life coach and it's his mission to help leaders transform. He's been fully active through this experience and encompassed in all the information and research to share aspects and pieces that we can all be aware of in coming to our own truth.  That's why I asked him to be on the show with me today. He's the perfect person to talk with us about all things C and V and we both have our own and different transmission that we bring together in unity. We talk about body sovereignty around everything we're moving through collectively. If someone decides they don't wish to get the V that's their choice; respect their sovereign free will. No matter what you believe, in any aspect of your life, your “no” gets to be respected and that it is just as sacred to honor the “yes” of someone else and their perfect choice.  Get curious with us about the reasons BEHIND what is being mandated to us. Our ownership of our own experiences allows us to question the reasons behind what we are being told, form our own opinions and hold our truths close to us. No matter what your beliefs, we invite you to hold the beliefs of others in high regard and allow them to do the same for you. Can we release separation and come together once again in Unity consciousness? Join us on today's show to do just that. There are two video's also referred to in this conversation about how to Alchemize all the pain, fear, stress, anxiety and feelings of lower density and vibration around this that Marci shares about her own experience and many of us can relate to as we have family, friends, and Beloveds all around us making different choices.  You can find those video's here. My man, Gary Ware, stepped into the diner and brought a bunch of truth and his expertise in play to the booth. Before we dove into all that we compared notes on how we both eat our pancakes. Then we discussed our mutual love, improv comedy. I asked Gary how Gary got into improv (turns out it was completely on accident!) and what improv taught him about himself. We then chatted about getting diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and where the shame creeps in. Gary made a huge shift going from a full-time marketing job to selling everything to starting his own company as an entrepreneur, so naturally, we had to talk about it. Then we got into his bread and butter: Play. We discussed why it is hard for adults to play and what we need to do to incorporate more play in their lives. This one ended super strong, y'all!   About the Guest:  Gary Ware, the Founder of Breakthrough Play is a corporate facilitator, keynote speaker, certified coach, and self-proclaimed Creative Catalyst. Gary has over 14 years of experience in the corporate word holding various leadership positions. Being a multifaceted individual Gary also comes with nearly a decade of experience as a performer in improv theatre. After experiencing burnout in his pursuit for success and happiness, he realized that what was missing was play. Committing to a life of play is what led Gary to discover his passion for facilitating. Gary uses the power of applied improvisation and other playful methods to assist people in unlocking creativity, confidence, and better communication. Gary was recently featured as one of the Top 100 HR influencers of 2020 by the Engagedly HR software platform. My first book, Leading Imperfectly: The value of being authentic for leaders, professionals, and human beings, is available wherever people buy books. I speak internationally to willing and unwilling attendees about authenticity, vulnerability, and leadership. My clients include American Express, General Electric (GE), Accenture, Yale University, The Ohio State University, and many others. As a speaker, I am doing the two things I loves the most: making people think and making people laugh!  I host my own events multiple times a year. They are 2-day events called Living Imperfectly Live (and sometimes they are 1-day virtual events). They are a space where humans from every walk of life can come together to be part of a community on the pursuit of badassery. The goal is to help attendees start living the life we say we want to live. Alas, you're here because of an idea I had a number of years ago and didn't think I was good enough to pull it off. I finally acted on it and alas Diner Talks with James was born! As you can see from what I do in my professional life, Diner Talks is alligned with everything I believe in and teach.  If this wasn't dry enough, and you would like to know more info about my speaking, events, or coaching feel free to check out my website: JamesTRobo.com. How do we move through resistance and discover all that we are? How can you step into the creator you are destined to be? Adam Roa joins me today to dive into opening yourself up to your potential. He is an entrepreneur and 7-figure coach who works with actors, CEOs, and professionals across the world. You may also know him from his video on Goalpost of a spoken word poem called “You Are Who You've Been Looking For.” His life is centered around creativity, and he believes expressing creativity is how you can lead a fulfilled life that nourishes your soul. Like many seekers and spiritual people, Adam found himself always searching the shadows and for what he could correct in himself. Eventually, he found that was exhausting. The only things that are sustainable are things that we enjoy. When you say “I'm going to play and create,” all the limiting beliefs and uncomfortable feelings associated with creating and playing are going to come up to be healed. Creation is a fun way to bring up whatever still gets to be moved through, loved, and healed. To become the creator you're destined to be, just PLAY! Today we sit down Gary Ware, a corporate facilitator and keynote speaker who uses the power of play to transform lives! He has been recommended by previous guests and for good reason, so sit down, listen up, and enjoy.Gary acknowledges that finding diverse talent requires extra effort. Companies that struggle to find diverse candidates need to peel back the layers on their recruitment efforts to find the problem. Are they looking for talent in schools that promote diversity? Perhaps your company needs to support efforts in the local community to help young people of color get exposure to the tech industry. Gary supports the push to remove CS degree requirements from software engineering roles because many of the necessary skills for the trade can be self taught or learned through mentorship. An apprenticeship is a great way to identify people who have the hunger and drive to learn. This model works because it teaches the apprentice the technical skills needed to get the job done and it also allows them to learn the grit and adaptive skills that cannot be taught in a classroom. In regards to retaining talent, Gary recommends that a company set metrics on their culture by referencing Primed To Perform a book by Lindsay McGregor and Neel Doshi. Additionally, he believes that the workplace should be one where employees feel like they want to be at work, their needs are heard, and their leadership cares about them.Gary Ware, the Founder of Breakthrough Play is a sought-after Corporate Facilitator and Keynote Speaker with nearly a decade of experience as performer in improv theatre. On the Profitable Joyful Consulting podcast, I teach you how to increase your profits and enjoy your business more. In this episode, you'll learn how to use play - yes, PLAY - to become more creative, achieve your goals, and experience more joy in your business.  Of all the consulting niches I've come across, Strategic Play Consultant Gary Ware's is my favorite! He joins me to share his experience helping clients with team building and problem-solving through “purposeful play” — something that's missing from most of our adult lives.  You might be thinking…”I don't have time for play.” Well, Gary says you're looking at play through the wrong lens. Play and creativity are muscles. They're skills that we can develop.  In addition to fun creative ideas for improving your work and home life, you'll hear Gary bringing in the science to support making these changes.  Key areas covered in this episode: Gary shares the breakthrough experience his client had when he played a game with their sales team. What Purposeful play us and why it matters (including an amazing fact about the benefits of play for the brain). How games reveal people's true nature and what you can learn about yourself and others through them. Play might not be exactly what you think it is. You can use play in your business — and we talk about how.  3 intrinsic and 3 external motivators, and how tapping into the intrinsic motivators helps you achieve your goals. Gary works with some impressive Blue-Chip companies. He shares how he got a foot in the door (and how he's pivoted and adapted this year with COVID-19). Catch this episode:

Gary Ware is concerned about your plan to work an all-nighter to finish that project. You might want to listen to his advice, because he's been where you are. Gary is the founder of Breakthrough Play, where he helps teams be more creative, confident, and collaborative using play. He has over half a decade of experience with improvisation, and over 14 years in the field of Digital Marketing. I first encountered Gary as the featured speaker for the Creative Mornings newsletter. His talk hit home, and I think it'll hit home for you as well if you've ever said to yourself, "I'll play when I get all of my work done." That may have worked when we were kids, but for us adults, the work is never done. And if we never play, we suffer. That suffering is called play deprivation - and Gary Ware is a great guide to help us understand it as well as overcome it.
