He's been featured on dozens of podcasts and news channels as the leading expert on all aspects of mold, remediation, and air quality. He is also a council-certified Mold Remediator by IICRC and ACAC and a contributing member, sponsor, and speaker for the Indoor Air Quality Association.Michael grew up in the construction and remediation industry, with his father, Richard Rubino having owned contracting companies for over three decades. As Michael grew older, he began working with his father in the remediation space. In this time, he began noticing issues with how the current industry addressed remediation in homes. Time and again, he noticed individuals seeking re-remediation for continued adverse health reactions or reoccurrence of mold colonies. As fate would have it, his wife, Colby, grew up in a family consisting of some of the nation's leading mold inspectors. They quickly confirmed Michael's concerns with how poorly the current remediation industry was addressing homes. His experience led him to establish HomeCleanse, a company focused on change. He became a specialist in working with people who are immunocompromised or have acute and sustained reactions to mold exposure. By working with scientific understanding, he was able to create alternative remediation protocols. These treatments provide solutions that not only get rid of mold sources but also get rid of the contamination created by those mold sources using his proprietary “Home Detox” method. He quickly realized that while he could try to help as many clients as possible every year, the best way to help improve indoor air quality worldwide was to share his wealth of knowledge with others. His book The Mold Medic provides a step-by-step guide to mold remediation and improving indoor air quality so that everyone has the opportunity to create a safe and healthy home.Michael was featured on GOOP, MindBodyGreen, NBC, FOX and other national media outlets, discussing his mission and purpose to make our homes' air safe!

This week we welcome back a long time friend of the show Carl Grimes of Hayward Score. Many of our listeners know Carl has been an advocate for including health in IEQ assessments for years and has been working with sensitive people for decades. Recently Carl worked with ASHRAE to better define health. He also spoke at IAQA on including people in assessments. In addition, Carl has extensive insight into the IICRC S520 over the years and has some thoughts on the latest proposed revisions. Hayward Score Healthy Home Director Carl Grimes, HHS CIEC, has a unique combination of experiences. He has both the personal experience of how an unhealthy home created his disabling impact, plus the professional experience in various industries working in the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) field. Carl wrote Starting Points for a Healthy Habitat in 1999, detailing possibilities of what could occur in a house to make its occupants sick, how to identify what was happening, what to do about it, what not to do, and how to verify the results. The book led to an invitation to speak at the national conference of the Indoor Air Quality Association, which led to an invitation to serve on a committee that wrote the first mold remediation standard. This was followed by revising the ANSI accredited water damage restoration standard, duct cleaning standards for two organizations, fire residue in HVAC systems, and eventually to the creation of IAQA's Home Health Committee. Under his leadership a new course was developed in partnership with the National Center for Healthy Housing and Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City: Healthy Home Assessment: Principles and Practice. Other activities included serving on the Board of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ) as the Vice President of Practice, on the ethics committee of the International Society of Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE), the Joint Task Force workgroup of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI-ACAAI). The latter developed four medical practice parameters for allergists plus an entire issue of a leading peer reviewed journal on mold. He was on the committee that wrote the ASHRAE Position Document on Limiting Indoor Mold and Dampness in Buildings. LEARN MORE at IAQRadio+.

Episode Summary I'm joined by Michael Rubino, aka The Mold Medic, to discuss how to overcome poor air quality and create a safe home environment. Michael is the leading expert on all aspects of mold, remediation, and air quality. We talk about how to get started if you suspect mold in your home, how to find a great remediator, and Michael's top product recommendations. Key Takeaways Someone who has Hashimoto's is likely to be a lot more sensitive to mold than someone without it. Michael shares easy visual inspections that you can do around your house and highlights possible places where mold can hide. He lists his go-to sampling strategies, including collecting dust, to test for toxins and abnormalities. He also details what to look for when building a team of experts to help you remediate and remove mold from your home. Michael Rubino Michael Rubino has become a renowned leader in the mold and remediation space. President of HomeCleanse, formerly known as All American Restoration, and author of The Mold Medic: An Expert's Guide on Mold Removal, Michael continues to push the conversation forward for creating better indoor air quality. He is also a council-certified Mold Remediator by IICRC and ACAC and a contributing member, sponsor, and speaker for the Indoor Air Quality Association. Hidden In Plain Sight: How To Inspect For Mold In Your Home The air that you breathe is essential for your health and wellbeing, especially if you have an autoimmune condition. One of the first places that Michael checks for mold is in toilet tanks. Other water-based appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, and coffee makers are common breeding grounds for mold. When was the last time that you checked your HVAC system filter? We all love having heating and cooling in our homes, but it's a major way for mold to spread. Finding The Right Solution For You A lot of people turn to bleach when they see mold in their home, but Michael recommends using botanical products and hydrogen peroxide instead. If you want to go deeper, Michael details a couple of different sampling strategies that a good mold inspector would use and explains what to look for in a professional remediator. He talks about the next steps and shares why it's so important to find a bespoke solution that matches your budget and end goal. In This Episode Emily asks Michael, “where should someone start if maybe they're suspecting water damage and mold is a factor in this bigger picture of having an autoimmune condition?” [ 1:52 ] Michael shares his recommendations for HVAC air filters. [ 9:58 ] Michael and Emily discuss cleaning remedies. [ 13:55 ] Michael breaks down the science behind the dust test. [ 21:43 ] Emily asks Michael, “How would you find a good remediator? What kind of questions would you ask?” [ 27:37 ] Emily asks Michael a couple of rapid fire questions, including his top air filter recommendation, how he feels about humidifiers, and if HEPA vacuums are a necessary household item. [ 39:53 ] Michael shares his final thoughts and message to anyone struggling with mold exposure. [ 47:16 ] Quotes Just relying on visuals and smell is not always enough to really determine what's going on. [ 20:13 ] There's nothing that you can just spray and pray. You have to remove the carbon footprint that's left behind by whatever you're trying to remove. [33:48] From a psychological perspective, if you're going to be wondering every time you cook with that spatula if mold is getting into what you're cooking, then just throw the spatula away. [38:53] Be patient. I know it's hard to do when you're not feeling well, but when we make quick, rash decisions, we sometimes miscalculate and make mistakes that don't yield us the results we're looking for, especially with mold. Rubino’s systems have a 100 percent guarantee to remove mold, mycotoxins, endotoxins, and bacteria, the hidden culprits behind poor air quality and many health issues, by removing the contaminants from the environment and improving the space so that these issues can no longer occur. He is a council certified Mold Remediator by IICRC and ACAC and a contributing member, sponsor, and speaker for the Indoor Air Quality Association. This week on IAQradio+ we welcome back one of our favorite guests, Carl Gimes of Hayward Healthy Homes and Hayward Score. Carl is nationally recognized as a professionally accredited Healthy Home Specialist (HHS) and a Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC). Equally important, he personally experienced a series of unhealthy homes. He is all too familiar with the uncertainty, exhaustion, and skepticism inherent with the struggle to finally recognize and accept that his home was perhaps not his safe and secure "castle," but was instead contributing to his puzzling declining health and sense of well-being. Since 1987 Carl has worked nationally as a private consultant guiding people who suffer from unhealthy houses. He has developed action plans and verification methods designed to eliminate health issues in homes. His clients include mothers, children, property managers, attorneys, health care providers, insurance adjusters, teachers, parents, architects, builders, and remediation contractors. In 1999, he authored the book Starting Points for a Healthy Habitat, based on his personal experience, as well as the experiences of his clients, living in unhealthy environments. This brought him to the attention of the national Indoor Air Quality Association. He was elected to their Board of Directors in 2002, and recently served as their President. Carl is now the Vice President of Practice for the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate. Carl has served on, created, and chaired a variety of committees writing industry consensus standards. He has collaborated with leading experts and researchers, analyzing the best approaches for restoring the indoor environment. He has chaired a committee that developed the course, Healthy Home Assessment: Principles and Practice, which is the follow-on to the Essential Healthy Home Practitioner course by the National Center for Healthy Housing (www.nchh.org). Carl brings to Hayward Healthy Home a unique combination of personal experience and professional expertise identifying and addressing the most critical issues in converting homes to healthy environments that fit individual needs.
