Check out our conversation with actress Cindy Marinangel as we learn about her one woman show Dietrich and more about her journey to become an actress. Cindy Marinangel is an international actress, a Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio (having studied under Mark Rydell, the late Martin Landau, Ellen Burstyn and Alec Baldwin) as well as a Chicago Second City Conservatory graduate (Stephen Colbert, Nia Vardalos, etc.). She was in UPtv's holiday special BEVERLY HILLS CHRISTMAS with Dean Cain and has had leading roles on stage since kindergarten when she played her first queen. Cindy continued the boards in Chicago, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Berlin, Los Angeles and New York in straight plays, dance shows as well as musicals. She has originated over twelve roles in new plays to rave reviews, most recently playing Misti in NY's New Circle Theatre's workshop production of FRACTURED. During Covid, Cindy purchased the rights to DIETRICH, the acclaimed, 75-minute, solo show - with - music that she produces and stars in. She has sung as Marlene Dietrich in Times Square for International Peace Day and performs an hour-long cabaret show as the international icon, having performed nine shows over three days at the Mid Atlantic Air Show's World War II weekend in their Officer's Club. Cindy is also a voice over artist. Her uniquely deep voice was personally chosen by Beyonce's family to narrate her international half - hour special for E! Entertainment. Cindy voiced two characters in the number one video game BRUTAL LEGENDS with Jack Black, Ozzie Osbourne and other rock legends. Cindy is the owner of Angel Baker Productions and with her international, creative team wrote, produced, and starred in an award-winning short film about a soul connection through lifetimes called ETERNAL WALTZ. The film was sponsored in part by the Johann Strauss Foundation of Germany and has garnered thirteen awards to date. Among those, she and her cast won “Best Acting Ensemble- Short” in the Culver City Film Festival, “Best Director” in the Amsterdam Around International Festival, “Best Female Film- Mini Movie”, as well as “Best Cinematography- Mini Movie” in the iHollywood Film Festival. ETERNAL WALTZ was screened in the Action On Festival in Las Vegas. Cindy is a competitive ballroom dancer with a passion for Latin dancing. She graduated Cum Laude from Purdue University and is an avid cat rescuer who maintains an animal-free diet. Mitch Levine (Director) is a film and stage director and actor, led the Directors Unit of the legendary Actors Studio, was a Juilliard Fellow and the first James Cameron Directing Fellow at the AFI. His film, SHADOWS, a story of love and loss during the Holocaust, Mitch directed GOD HELP US! starring the late, great Ed Asner, the documentaries HUNGRY IS THE TIGER and MORPHING GRAVITY and the drama INCONFIDENCE (Cannes 2015). He directed the epic Bicentennial Celebration of the University of Virginia, was Artistic Supervisor of the Philip Glass/Robert Wilson opera, EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH, collaborated with Peter Gabriel and Moses Pendleton on PASSION, directed A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM for PRT, Jean Anouilh's ANTIGONE for the Williamstown Theatre Festival and Arthur Kopit's WINGS. In New York, he directed SORRY! at Circle Rep, AMORPHOUS GEORGE for MCC and the revival of Lyle Kessler'sORPHANS. Mitch was the host of AFI's GREAT FILMMAKERS series and of REFUGEE VOICES IN FILM in Cannes. He runs The Film Festival Group, consults with filmmakers around the world and served as a Special Representative to the United Nations. The late Willard Manus was a playwright, journalist and novelist who was a member of the Playwright/Director unit of The Actors Studio. His most recent plays were JOE AND MARILYN: A LOVE STORY, FRANK, AND AVA (now a motion picture) and WHO KILLED COMRADE RABBIT? Peace Building in Africa and Beyond: Creating partnerships in Australia and the Democratic Republic of CongoThe Raising Peace Festival was held from September 16th to September 26th, 2021. The Festival celebrated International Peace Day, September 21st, and was organised by International Volunteers for Peace (IVP), the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), the The Quakers and  the Independent and Peaceful Australia Network (IPAN). The Festival featured presentations from 37 organisations and went for eleven days with a thousand people attending.Today Comunication Mixdown features two organisations that gave presentations at the Raising Peace Festival; the Great Lakes Agency for Peace and Developmment (GLAPD) and HandUp Congo, in particular their Emergency Medicine program. Judith chats with Dr Nadine Shema, a co-founder of the Great Lakes Agency for Peace and Developmment, Lucy Hopgood-Brown, a co-founder of HandUp Congo and Dr Vera Sistenich, leader of the Emergency Medicine Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In the lead up to International Peace Day on the 21st September we'll be looking at the latest threat to peace and nuclear non-proliferation in the region with the Morrison-led conservative government's announcement on Thursday 16th September that a deal with the US to build nuclear powered submarines will be a central feature of the AUKUS pact that they have developed with the US and the UK.We speak with Margaret Reynolds the President of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom Australia who are calling for urgent public scrutiny into the deal. Friends of the Earth Australia's National Anti-nuclear campaigner Dr. Jim Green joins us to talk through some of the potential ramifications for nuclear proliferation and radioactive waste management issues that the deal threatens.If you'd like to connect with grassroots organisations working for peace the Raising Peace festival is happening online between the 16-26 September.  It's coordinated by Women's International League for Peace and Freedom Australia, the Independent and Peaceful Australia Network and International Peace Volunteers and they have many events including speakers, workshops, films, exhibitions that you can participate in.The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons final Ban School session is coming up on Monday 20th September from 5-6.30pm AEST.   THE ROAD TO A NUCLEAR FREE FUTURE features a fantastic line up of speakers that will talk political advocacy, local government, superannuation funds, education, direct action, Pacific solidarity and look ahead to map the movement that wins.

The Girl with the Flower: The Journey is the Trip. In this week's episode, I sit down and speak with Jan Rose Kasmir, who was featured in an iconic photograph that was taken by French photographer Marc Riboud.  Riboud photographed Kasmir, who at that time was a high-school student on October 21, 1967 while taking part with over 100,000 anti-war activists in the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam's March on the Pentagon to protest U.S. involvement in Vietnam.  In the photo, seventeen-year-old Kasmir was shown clasping a chrysanthemum and gazing at bayonet-wielding soldiers. The photo was featured in the December 30, 1969 special edition of Look magazine under the title The Ultimate Confrontation: The Flower and the Bayonet. The photo was republished world-wide and became a symbol of the flower power movement. Smithsonian Magazine later called it "a gauzy juxtaposition of armed force and flower child innocence." Kasmir graduated in 1986 from the New York College of Health Professions in Manhasset, New York as a massage therapist, and worked in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina until 1991. She then moved to Aarhus, Denmark, with her Danish husband and their daughter. She returned with her daughter to the United States in 2002, and resumed living on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. In February 2003, Riboud again photographed Kasmir protesting against the Iraq War where she carried a poster-size copy of the 1967 photograph. In 2010, Kasmir was invited by the Spanish organization Avalon Project Peace NGO to speak during activities for International Peace Day in Seville, Spain. In January 2017, she joined the Women's March in Washington, D.C. Jan Rose just published her second book, The Girl with the Flower: The Journey is the Trip, which is her long-awaited and highly acclaimed autobiography, Jan Rose lays it bare. In an honest and frank account, she pulls no punches and talks about the sex and the drugs, her stays in state mental institutions, the death of her sister and the collapse of her family, which she would spend a lifetime overcoming. Yet, she never forgot about what she believed was her role in life - a peace campaigner, first and foremost. Through the gloom and despair emerges inspiration, a true story of love, of how she managed to pry herself from the jaws of self-destruction, and ultimately learn how to love her daughter and most of all, herself.

(This podcast was recorded in February prior to John leaving on his national book tour, which was cancelled shortly after it began due to the corona virus pandemic. John is sheltering at home on the Central Coast of California and sends his blessing to everyone at this difficult time.) John Dear talks about Jesus stating the way he lived during his time was totally nonviolent. He resisted the Roman empire just as we should be resisting the empire of war and death we live in now. Dear speaks about the peace movements going on in the country like Fire Drill Fridays with Jane Fonda and the 3000 participants across the country in last year's week of nonviolence actions around International Peace Day. He states "we need to be a global movement now!" Dear explains nonviolent resistance as us "cooing like a dove and hissing like a snake, but not hurting anyone." We are existing under the demons of apathy and complacency, but if we took up the "cross" like Jesus did nonviolently we would find out that we have already won. Through Jesus' campaign of nonviolence we have been given the power if we claim it.

Sept. 2017 – International Peace Day falls on September 21st, therefore this month we will be emphasizing the Peace – in Peace, Love & Soup. We’re going to talk to Wintry Whit Smith who is spreading peace education worldwide with her Peace Village Global curriculum! She has some simple and helpful superpowers to promote peace for all of us: Stop…..Take a breath….. Be calm…..Be kind! On the soup menu we just couldn’t resist and decided to make a Pea soup — a one pot Minty Garden Pea And Coconut Milk Soup to be exact. It’s a versatile soup you can serve cold, tepid or hot, because who knows what the weather will be on any given day in September! And adding to the audio nourishment this month, will be the musical stylings of THOSE WILLOWS a talented band from right here in Portland, Oregon. Also the song “Powerful Enough”, written by Rand Bishop, performed by Rand Bishop and the kids from the Lincoln City Peace Village.
