Kinsella on Liberty Podcast: Episode 491. https://youtu.be/lfjpoKCWBDA I've known Paul Cwik, Professor of Economics and Finance at the University of Mount Olive and fellow of the Mises Institute since I started attending the Austrian Scholars Conference in 1995. He is an Austrian and libertarian of sorts but had some qualms with my anti-IP writing so presented a paper "Is There Room for Intellectual Property Rights in Austrian Economics?" at the Austrian Scholars Conference in 2008, which I attended and commented on. After 18 years we finally decided to get around to talking about this. I had planned on an hour but we ended up talking for 3. It turns out we were old friends but not that close; we didn't know much about each other. So the first 30-50 minutes or so is more preliminary discussion. To his credit, he read a good deal of the huge deluge of material I sent to read up on and asked many very good questions. He did not engage in intentional equivocation that is characteristic of many on the pro-IP side, and he was reasonable in conceding many of my points and was willing to ponder my push back. I was hoping to get him to see the light, since I have in person seen many people change their minds on IP after a long discussion but have never had it happen while recording. We did not resolve the issue, partly because we just didn't have enough time to keep going, but I think we made some progress. Maybe we will have a Part 2 later. Who knows. The first two weeks of Advent, the church would reflect on the Second Coming. Disciples would chasten their hearts, confess sins, and spend time hoping for the quick coming of the Lord. It was a time of reflection and fasting.The last two weeks of Advent would then transition to focus on the first coming—Christ in the manger. This was a time of feasting.Advent and Christmas are never held as a full re-enactment of the life of Christ but point to our place between the Resurrection and Second Coming.How Do You Walk Through Advent?I'm going to share ideas over the four weeks of Advent, but today I want to talk about making space for Christ.There's a book called "Make Space for Christ" by Susan Narjala, and the concept comes from that line in the Christmas carol: "Let every heart prepare Him room." But how do we actually do that?The Crisis of a Christ-Less ChristmasWe face a crisis of a Christ-less Christmas. We forget the guest of honor—Jesus. We get so wrapped up in gifts, we forget to unwrap the greatest gift of all.The antithesis of fearing God isn't offending Him or denying Him or omitting Him. It's forgetting God. Luke 3:4-6 talks about preparing the way of the Lord.Anticipation Is KeyThink about how you prepare for house guests. It takes time, right? So does preparing for or anticipating the feast of Christmas.You clean the house, you clean the bedrooms. You make sure your guests will be comfortable. You get rid of unnecessary items in the guest room. You declutter. In the same way, we need to confess sin and make room in our hearts.Psalm 27 says, "One thing I seek, to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life to meditate..." Sometimes you need to rearrange the room if necessary—get rid of toys, add water bottles, clean towels. Rethink, rearrange, and refocus so Christ has room in your family.We're anticipating the second coming of Christ as well. Growing up, we would read the Christmas story on Christmas Eve. Now I do Advent candles each week along with Advent Bible reading or Jotham's Journey.When you greet and treat guests with love, it's not because you have to. You get to. You want to.Is There Room for Jesus?Is there room in your heart for Jesus? Is there room in your schedule for Jesus? Is there room in your family for Jesus?We need to re-prioritize. We need to respond in AWE to God's amazing love. Matthew 6:33 says, "Seek first the kingdom of God."Hope: The First Candle in AdventIn America, we use the word "hope" to mean "wish." But in Jesus, hope means expecting Him—confident expectation. It's not just a wish that God is here or that Jesus saves. It's confident expectation.Think about the line from O Holy Night that you could use for copywork, dictation, or a short discussion about "thrill of hope":O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining It is the night of the dear Savior's birth! Long lay the world in sin and error pining Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!We're still waiting for His coming again—the second coming. We're still weary from the world, from personal issues.Isaiah 40:31 talks about waiting on the Lord. Think about O Come Emmanuel—Israel hoped and waited 400 years. Joel Comm is here today to chat with me about if there is room for another podcast. He has a new podcast that is less than nine months old, yet he is having amazing success. This is because Joel is delivering content that his audience is hungry for. We also take a look at the specifics of Joel's podcast. We look at how he is getting revenue and where it is coming from. This podcast is about crypto, and he is connecting a very specific audience to a very specific offer. The power of this industry is making solid connections the way that Joel is doing. Tip of the Week: Are you considering sponsorships for your podcast? If so, think about a sponsor that will still sound good in one year, two years, or later down the line. You want your sponsorship to sound like a strategic implementation of what you are trying to do. Add sponsors that tell a more complete story of where your podcast is going. Is There Room for Another Podcast? [02:55] Joel and I have known each other for about a decade. He has rebooted and gone through different products over that time, but he has always remained successful. [03:05] The podcast we talk about today is not his first podcast, but it is an extremely successful podcast. [03:25] Joel wrote one of the first twitter books called Twitter Power. [03:59] The Bad Crypto Podcast started in July 2017. It was started on a whim as a case of opportunity meets action. [04:48] Bad Crypto's average Spotify downloads are over 1000 a day. They have had half a million downloads in February. Since July, 3 million across the board. [06:23] Before Joel and his co-host Travis Wright started the Bad Crypto Podcast a lot of the other crypto podcasts out there were kind of dry and over people's heads. They decided to take an approach that was more fun and focused on learning together. [08:05] Joel tries not to listen to other crypto podcasts, because he wants to make sure that they keep doing something different and unique without having outside influences. [09:30] The success of Joel's podcast is a combination of many things from timing to their unique content. Joel was slow to start working with crypto. [10:30] Travis and Joel were talking about having a crypto podcast, and then they decided to make it a reality. [11:07] They started their podcast with no idea that the big crypto boom was coming. [12:25] They started using Spotify in September and their numbers just kind of tracked along with the numbers on Libsyn. They are in 190 countries worldwide. [14:02] Joel shares his podcast monetization strategy. They are super transparent. One show is an ICO spotlight. ICO stands for initial coin offering. Companies get to come on the show and tell listeners about their ICO. [15:27] They will offer companies sponsored slots on an ICO show. They charge the company for that slot which is usually a 15 to 18 minute interview. [15:48] They usually do three of those in an episode. Their numbers are on the high side, and they're not going to take sponsors that don't fit. [17:07] They also have some crypto related sponsors. [17:53] They have also taken the Bad Crypto Show on the road and actually created a live experience. They have a funny, engaging, and interactive experience that adds a whole new dimension to these crypto conferences. [19:05] The Bad Crypto Live Shows were an unintended consequence. People could try to copy them, but it would be obvious. [19:10] They have a really unique niche within this vertical. [19:55] How podcasters are now becoming fascinating entities. [21:24] How doing Bad Crypto Live is so much more fun than doing a professional keynote speech. It's like doing improv. [22:28] They now have a team to help manage the show. All of the aspects of podcasting can be really draining. They like to focus on what they do best which is creating content and speaking. [23:09] Is there room for new podcasts? Of course.Tell a story that is unique and be true to yourself. [23:28] Why would you want to copy what somebody else is doing. Do something unique. The Student Union Lecture Series 4: Is There Room for Black in the Union Jack? Britain has seen a complicated relationship with race. The Industrial Revolution saw Britain’s industries and economy grow exponentially, almost totally a direct result from its colonial and imperial (mis)dealings. It had taken part in both World Wars, recruiting thousands from the colonies to fight in the armed forces. Britain has therefore been a truly 'global' nation with cities like London built almost entirely out of the colonial moment. In the 1970s and 80s, post-colonial migrants from across the empire then began to define as ‘black’ as a term of solidarity to confront racism in the UK. However, ‘political blackness’ has become contentious, as solidarities have arguably broken down. So what does black mean now? London – the heart of the empire – looks very different today. It has redefined itself as the ‘post-race’ and ‘superdiverse’ melting pot, despite black communities being quickly gentrified and displaced. With all this in mind, we ask what/who is black and Is There Room for Black in the Union Jack? Panellists: Joshua Virasami is a musician, writer, waiter and member of Black Dissidents. Black Dissidents are a UK based group of militant black and brown activists, organising for liberation by any and all means necessary. Fatuma Khaireh is a poet and playwright, she is part of OOMK Zine a biannual publication centring activism, art and faith of non-white women and muslim women. Kevin Bismark Cobham is a criminal defence lawyer who also defines himself as a movement lawyer, pan-Africanist and community activist and is from London. He also is a member of London Campaign Against Police and State Violence, a family-led campaign against all forms of police and state brutality against communities in South London and beyond. Activist and blogger Zahra Dalilah is a South London native and a long time nomad. Her experiences of the African diaspora are shaped by her both her studies and her travels and has recently been proactively in exploring ideas on race and racism and why these issues are so reluctantly explored in mainstream discourse. She is currently an active member of Take Back The City.
