Yes she is.)With three times the amount of shows to work with, Paul and Jill are swamped with questions, like what is WITH these humongous casts? What does Bud Freeman have against the beats, man? Bill & Claire's Excellent Adventures

This week, we kick off our exploration of musicals! Our first film in this series is the 1952 spectacle: Singin' In The Rain. Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Connor sing and dance their way into our hearts in this film about Hollywood's transition from silent pictures to talkies. Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly direct, and we get to really see what the "King of Musicals" (Donen) and one of the most talented dancers ever to grace the silver screen (Kelly) can do when given relatively free creative control of a film. We dig into the artistry of the film and analyzing the character of Lena Lamont in particular (masterfully played by Jean Hagen).  Whether you are a longtime lover of musicals or new to the genre, we invite you to partner with us for this waltz through musical cinema history. Join us! Fill in some of your cinematic gaps as we venture into what we've dubbed #OperationDancingShoes. This operation name is somewhat contested, as you'll hear in the episode. Singin’ in the Rain is the iconic Musical. Released in 1952, this film has it all. Great singing, amazing dancing, a fun story and spectacle galore. The film stars Gene Kelly in the lead as Don Lockwood, as well as Debbie Reynolds in one of her earliest roles as Kathy Selden. The film also stars Donald O’Connor as Cosmo Brown and Jean Hagen as Lina Lamont. The story takes place in 1927, as films are transitioning from silent moving pictures to “talkies,” and offers a glimpse behind the scenes in early Hollywood film making. Don and Cosmo have to figure out what to do with Lina Lamont when it comes out that her voice is not going to work for the new audio tracks accompanying films. This is a love story, a comedy and a musical all rolled into one, and our team is talking about why it has endured for so long. Tracy talks about why this film is in his top 10 or 15 of all time. Val talks about the influence this film has on her as a budding filmmaker herself. What do you think of Singin’ in the Rain? Is it one of your all-time favorite films? “The sun’s in my heart and I’m ready for love” The Spoiler team are back for series 8 and what better way to celebrate our 50th episode than by finally acknowledging the elephant in the recording studio that’s been hanging over Paul since series 1; Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly’s definitive film musical ‘Singin’ in the Rain’. It’s no secret that Andy and Rachael both adore this eternal classic but a self-sabotaging Paul is having none of it, putting off watching it until the first day back at work after the Christmas holidays and subsequently dismissing everything as annoying, bizarre and too yellow. That said, he just can’t get the ‘Good Morning’ song out of his head! Andy tells the story of his previous, magical viewing of the film on the big screen and Rachael warns of the dangers of trying to recreate the dance moves in real life. While everyone agrees that the central romance completely lacks chemistry, a grumpy Paul fails to get anyone else to say a bad word about Donald O’Connor’s Cosmo or the famous title routine, which he thinks Morecambe and Wise did better. And Andy gives Paul an intensive grilling with a specially-prepared set of notes designed to highlight the contradictions in our beloved host. Elsewhere, Andy takes an in-depth look at a comparatively overlooked Hollywood musical, Mervyn LeRoy and Busby Berkley’s 1933 classic ‘Gold Diggers of 1933’. This episode of Spoiler is brought to you by the letter C. This week’s scale: Singin’ in the Rain or a wet Wednesday night in Wigan

Filmen er en pastiche på Hollywood i 30'erne og portrætterer med - en slags (!) - letbenet humor overgangen fra stumfilm til tonefilm og er spækket med dans og populærmusik. The guys sit down to watch their second musical, and this one just so happens to be the most universally-beloved film musical of all time: 1952’s Singin’ in the Rain. They’re in the unique position of being able to compare it to An American in Paris, and do they ever. First, they wonder about director Stanley Donen and his decisions throughout the film, especially having characters break the fourth wall. Still, the camera work is impressive, and you’ve got the always-great Gene Kelly in the lead role. Bob wonders how Debbie Reynolds, great as she is, ever landed this role. But both hosts agree that Donald O’Connor is a national treasure and by far the most underrated part of the movie. For their whiskey selection, the guys continue the Summer of Bourbon series with Weller Special Reserve, discussing the “wheated” bourbon name, its relation to Pappy Van Winkle, and how every tier of the Weller vertical lineup is benefiting from the Pappy boom. After the break, they discuss Kelly’s performance and debate whether he was better here or in American in Paris. They also share their thoughts on the famous Hollywood story of Kelly’s cruelty to Reynolds, and how she found guidance from one Fred Astaire. 0:00 - Intro and Initial Thoughts 26:30 - Weller Special Reserve Review 37:45 - Analysis and Final Thoughts Film & Whiskey Podcast. SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN (1952) is the epitome of classic Hollywood MGM movie magic, and is a musical about the birth of the Hollywood musical. The film is set in the 1920s, when silent films were being pushed aside by “talkies.” Gene Kelly plays Don Lockwood, a popular silent film star who is famous for his on-screen romances with Lina Lamont, played by Jean Hagen. Behind the scenes, Lina is a total diva who happens to have a high-pitched, whiny voice that will never work for a film with sound. Enter Debbie Reynolds as Cathy, a young actress who falls for Don and has the perfect voice that can be dubbed in for Lina’s… SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN has a great plot, but the real appeal of this film, in our opinion, is the trio of Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O’Connor, plus the memorable songs. In this episode, we talk about how SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN was basically made as an excuse to recycle songs from the twenties and thirties, Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen as co-directors, and the superstar singer, dancer, and actor who was rumored to have helped Debbie Reynolds work on her dancing after he found her crying under a piano after leaving a rehearsal. Grab an umbrella and get ready to jump into what many people consider the greatest movie musical ever made!

In honor of National Tap Dance Day (May 25), Movie Addict Headquarters revisits a lively discussion with avid dance fan Fausta Rodriguez, co-host Jazz Shaw, producer Nikki Starr -- and host Betty Jo Tucker, a former happy tapper. This encore presentation is dedicated to Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, the great tap dancer whose birthday on May 25 is celebrated every year as NATIONAL TAP DANCE DAY, having been signed into law by President George W. Bush back in 1989 to celebrate tap dancing as an American art form. This episode features a conversation about favorite dancing in the movies, so tap dancing is included, of course. But you will also hear opinions about other forms of dance such as tango, ballroom and ballet. Which dancers will be named the best by the show’s diverse panel? Among the contenders are: Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, Gregory Hines, Eleanor Powell, Fred Astaire, the Nicholas Brothers, Ginger Rogers, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor, Leslie Caron, Ruby Keeler, Vera Ellen, Christopher Walken. Some of the films under consideration during this episode include: Footloose, Assassination Tango, The Bandwagon, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Singin’ in the Rain, Shall We Dance, Billy Elliott, West Side Story, Saturday Night Fever, Dirty Dancing, Take the Lead, Flashdance, Hairspray, Easter Parade and Tap.

My guest for this month is Jessie Char, and she’s joined me to discuss the film she chose for me, the 1952 musical comedy Singin' in the Rain. You can follow the show on Twitter @cinemagadfly. Show notes: For the record, I haven’t seen Now You See Me or Glitter Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds are both phenomenal in this film I’m still in shock that Debbie Reynolds is Carrie Fisher’s mom Possibly the quintessential example of Hollywood telling their own story is the film A Star is Born, which was released in 1937, and then remade in 1954, and again in 1976 The transition from silent film to talkies was a rough one on the actors who lived through it The war on female voices is incredibly destructive Jean Hagan, who played Lina Lamont, does a remarkable job of creating a voice that would have had trouble transitioning to sound Make ‘Em Laugh by Donald O'Connor is an incredible feat of acrobatics It’s fair to say that Lupino Lane paved the way for Donald O'Connor’s career The Love Parade was definitely not Norman Rockwell America The song Jessie is referring to is called Broadway Melody Ballet, it’s really weird Cyd Charisse was the lady that Gene Kelly chose so that he’d have a trained dancer to partner with at some point in the film The age of consent in California has been 18 since 1913 Gene Kelly was super sick when the filmed the title number I still haven’t watched Andy Samberg host the Emmys There are a bunch of Technicolor films in my all-time favorites This film is just a lot happier than something like Chicago Apple pie, America, and idealism; what this film is all about Stay tuned for Jessie forcing me to watch The Sound of Music, I can’t wait Jessie’s website is part of the normal internet Rent or buy the film from iTunes Rent or buy the film from Amazon

In conversation with professor Dianne Newman, Caltech geobiologist, James “Jim” J. Morgan recalls his early days in Ireland and New York City, education in parochial and public schools, and introduction to science in Cardinal Hayes High School, Bronx.  In 1950, Jim entered Manhattan College, where he elected study of civil engineering, in particular water quality. Donald O'Connor motivated Jim's future study of O2 in rivers at Michigan, where in his MS work he learned to model O2dynamics of rivers. As an engineering instructor at Illinois, Jim worked on rivers polluted by synthetic detergents. He chose to focus on chemical studies, seeing it as crucial for the environment. Jim enrolled for PhD studies with Werner Stumm at Harvard, who mentored his research in chemistry of particle coagulation and oxidation processes of Mn(II) and (IV). In succeeding decades, until retirement in 2000, Jim's teaching and research centered on aquatic chemistry; major themes comprised rates of abiotic manganese oxidation on particle surfaces and flocculation of natural water particles, and chemical speciation proved the key.
