Drummer, singer, and songwriter Jerry Gaskill founded the progressive metal band Kings X in 1983. A native of Bridgeton, New Jersey, Gaskill began playing at a young age, forming a band with his father and brother and playing his first gig at the age of seven. After playing in bands throughout high school, he became heavily involved in the Christian faith and enrolled at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. Not long after arriving in Springfield, he befriended bassist dUg Pinnick and the two formed a sturdy rhythm section, backing up artists like future Petra singer Greg X. Volz and guitarist Phil Keaggy. After trying out various combos of their own, Gaskill and Pinnick were joined by guitarist Ty Tabor and the trio, then called Sneak Preview, relocated to Houston, Texas. Changing their name to Kings X in 1987, they eventually signed with metal label Megaforce and released their debut, Out of the Silent Planet, a year later. A prog trio with a strong melodic bent and elaborate three-part harmonies, Kings X have enjoyed a successful career with stints on Atlantic, Metal Blade, and InsideOut Music. Gaskill's contributions as drummer, writer, and occasional lead singer are an integral part of Kings X's sound. In 2004, he released his solo debut, Come Somewhere, which was recorded and produced by bandmate Ty Tabor. In addition to his work with Kings X, Gaskill has contributed to side projects by his two bandmates as well as albums by blues guitarist Jay Hooks and New Jersey songwriter Bob Burger. After suffering a heart attack in early 2012, Gaskill's home was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy later that same year. Waylaid by a second heart attack in 2014, he rallied to release his second solo LP, Love & Scars. The album was released in October 2015 and featured guest spots from Billy Sheehan, Phil Keaggy, Earl Slick, and others. In this episode, Jerry talks about: Kings X new album - Three Sides of One Insight to Jerry's time feel Surviving two heart attacks Wedges over in-ear monitors The popularity of Kings X among the musician community Moving away from the Christian music industry in the early days The profound inspiration that John Bonham had on his playing Performing with Bruce Springsteen
In this episode, host Mike Dawson interviews Jerry Gaskill of legendary alternative rock band King's X, and he chats with Steve Stecher of Doc Sweeney Drums about their innovative new HolloCore snare series. The main segment compares German-style and standard steel snare wires of different widths. Thomas Wendt is back to teach us all how to play a jazz shuffle. After a fielding a few listener questions, the show concludes with the Warehouse Pick of the Week.
dUg Pinnick is known first and foremost as the soulful singer and bassist for hard rockers King's X. Born in Joliet, IL, Pinnick discovered rock & roll through such greats as Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin, while he borrowed from gospel for his singing style. When a gig backing up Christian guitarist Phil Keaggy broke up in the early '80s, Pinnick formed a new band with fellow ex-Keaggy member Jerry Gaskill (drums) and guitarist Ty Tabor. It would take several years of playing covers in bars throughout the South before the new band would click musically and eventually settle on a name: King's X. Signing to Megaforce/Atlantic in 1987, the trio became a favorite with the metal and progressive rock crowd; their music also contained elements of alternative in their hard rock, long before it became en vogue during the '90s. Pinnick is one of the few bassists of hard rock who uses a 12-string bass regularly, which is a major ingredient to the magical King's X sound. dUg sat down with Mistress Carrie to talk about the new Kings-X album, his musical upbringing, songwriting process, the bass, his inspiration, and so much more! Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. Brought to you by The Publicity Works Agency specializing in authors & musicians Remember We shine only when We make you shine! Call us today at 941-567-6193 for a free PR evaluation! KINGS X architected a catalog of seminal releases. KERRANG! famously scored their 1988 full-length debut, Out of the Silent Planet, with a rare “5-out-of-5-stars.” On its heels, the landmark Gretchen Goes to Nebraska continues to inspire think pieces with Ultimate Classic Rock going as far to proclaim, “no one else has crafted anything remotely like it.” They notably appeared on the soundtrack to Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, and Guitar World christened the self-titled King's X one of “The 30 Greatest Rock Guitar Albums of 1992” (a year notably highlighted by Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power, Alice in Chains' Dirt, Megadeth's Countdown To Extinction, Dream Theater's Images and Words, and many more). Following Dogman, the group graced the stage of Woodstock 1994 and toured with everyone from Pearl Jam and AC/DC to Mötley Crüe and Iron Maiden. They also attracted one of the most diehard fanbases in music. Their first full-length studio offering in 14 years, Three Sides of One, represents the culmination of this trip and of a bond forged way back in 1979. E06 King's X is an American Rock Trio and featuring two songs - We Were Born To Be Loved and The Difference (in the Garden of St. Anne's In this episode of The Add To My Playlist Podcast, we focus in on the amazing, Kings X King's X is an American rock band that originated in 1979 in Springfield, Missouri. They were first called The Edge and later became Sneak Preview before settling on its current name in 1985. The band's current lineup has remained intact for more than three decades, consisting of vocalist and bassist Doug Pinnick, drummer Jerry Gaskill and guitarist Ty Tabor. Their music combines progressive metal, funk and soul with vocal arrangements influenced by gospel, blues, and British Invasion rock groups. Despite a largely underground reputation as the "musician's musicians", King's X was pivotal in the early development of progressive metal, From the Faith Hope Love album - King's X is a 3 piece band that have some of the most intricate arrangements both musically and vocally - for me the end of this song is a masterpiece - the pauses, hesitations, breaks and runs just make me smile - start at the 3:00 minute mark… 3:37 has a great drum break, the song ending just keeps going and going and going - this is the Energizer bunny song for sure! King's X - We Were Born To Be Loved For something completely different, and to demonstrate the versatility of this band check out my favorite acoustic tune from King's X - this tune has rich rich rich harmonies! Their fans include Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament, The Police’s Andy Summers, Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan, Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil and many more. Dug's journey has been one of constant struggle. He had a traumatic childhood and then had to find his way as a black man in America, a gay man in a religious environment all while trying to pursue a career in music. We talk about his lyrics, his childhood, impostor syndrome and being an honest outspoken person. We talk about the complications with the bands performance in front of 300,000 people at Woodstock 94 and we chat about the state of the world. On the episode Dug says "It hasn't gotten worse than the 70s until the police come out with tear gas and rubber bullets." Two weeks later George Floyd was murdered by a police officer, igniting riots across the US. Welcome to the groove machine!

Sound Matters episode 081 features Tom's conversation with King's X drummer, singer, and songwriter, Jerry Gaskill. As one of my favorite bands of all time, the criminally underrated, King’s X, getting the opportunity to speak with drummer Jerry Gaskill, was a big thrill for me. I have every album the band has released, and have seen them in concert and photographed them multiple times. I was able to delve into several subjects with Jerry including the band’s book, "King’s X: An Oral History," forthcoming King's X music, Jerry’s solo albums, songwriting vs. drumming, Jerry’s heart attacks, death, and perspectives on health today, and much more. I think Jerry enjoyed this in-depth conversation with me, I know I did, even if I did seemingly stump him a few times toward the end. Jerry Gaskill, longtime drummer for King's X, was in Nashville this week to resume his work with friend/producer/collaborator D.a. Karkos of Underdog Studios; work that had started in January of 2012 but was delayed for a few reasons. Jerry and D.a. were both kind enough to sit down with Decibel Geek Podcast host Chris Czynszak to discuss it all. On February 26th Gaskill suffered a massive heart attack and briefly died before being saved via emergency surgery. In this conversation, Jerry shares what he went through during this time as well as how the presence of his then-fiancee Julie most certainly is the reason he is still alive today. After news broke of the heart attack, fans of Jerry from all over the globe pitched in in the form of donations and benefit shows to help out the legendary drummer during his road to recovery. With his body healed, Jerry and Julie tied the knot in Las Vegas just before King's X went back on a brief tour with Kansas in September. Things were looking up.....until October. Jerry, Chris, D.a. In late October, Superstorm Sandy made landfall along the East Coast and devastated many along the New Jersey shore; the Gaskill's rented home and its contents among them. Once again, fans of the drummer marched into action to raise more funds to help the couple recover from the tragedy. In this discussion, Jerry shows an amazing sense of grace and perseverance. He shares what steps he's taken to continue to move forward with his life and his music. This long-form discussion also has Gaskill sharing his memories of childhood; becoming influenced while watching the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show as it happened live and going on to play his show at the age of seven. Gaskill first crossed paths with future King's X bassist/vocalist Dug Pinnick in 1979. Shortly thereafter, Ty Tabor entered the picture and King's X was born. During this talk, Gaskill describes the early days of the band, the Christian ideals and labels that were attrributed to them, and how he feels about that description today. King's X was widely considered one of the highlights of the 1994 Woodstock festival; with the band gaining new exposure in front of the 300,000 audience members as well as the millions that watched at home. In this conversation, Gaskill recalls the feeling of playing to such a large crowd, how it compared to the original festival, and the night of excess a few days before that threatened to affect King's X perfromance at the show. As stated before, Gaskill was in Nashville this week to continue working with Karkos as well as legendary producer Michael Wagener at his Wireworld Studio to get more drum sounds for the upcoming solo album. Jerry and D.a. are playing it close to the vest when it comes to describing what fans can expect but they do give a quick glimpse behind the curtain with a story about the unorthodox utilization of a trash can in the studio. With expectations of a 2013 release, Gaskill seems optimistic about the future of his music as well as his life. His positive attitude and motivation to press forward regardless of his obstacles are a testament to him and the love he receives from his fans. We hope this conversation gives you a fuller perspective on Jerry Gaskill. Contact Info: Jerry Gaskill Underdog Studios Buy Music! Jerry Gaskill King's X D.a. Karkos Contact Us! Now that KISSMAS in July is over, the Decibel Geek Podcast returns with a bunch of variety this week all in the name of threesomes! Before we get to the music, a couple of announcements. As we announced last week, you can stream the Decibel Geek podcast ever Friday night through Maximum Threshold Radio at 7:00p.m. EST. We're proud to be a part of this great internet radio station and highly recommend you check them out for some great rock and metal as well as the Maximum Threshold Radio Show that is streamed live every Saturday night. You never know, Chris or Aaron just might be in the chat room during their show. This week's Geek of the Week is David Haltom! David left an awesome comment on our facebook fan page that mentioned Aaron Camaro's laugh that gave us a good chuckle. Aaron is now in therapy and we thank David for his contribution. Now, onto today's show! three·some (thrsm) n. 1. A group of three persons or things. 2. An activity involving three people. adj. Consisting of or performed by three. Get your mind out the gutter folks! Did you really think we were going to spend an hour talking about old Ginger Lynn and Ron Jeremy films? We teased you with all sorts of things involving the number 3 over past week and today we discuss our favorite threesomes; as in rock power trios. A rock trio is about as bare-bones as you can get (as long as you aren't counting folk singers and 2-man hipster garage rock). No keyboard players (unless one of the three is one), no backup singers, and no extra percussionists (we're looking at you, Slipknot). The onus is purely on the three individuals to hash things out and make the magic happen. While there are plenty of fantastic four and five piece bands the existence of the power trio makes one sit up and take notice as there is an honesty and ingrained camaraderie that takes place between the members. A group that helped define the term "power trio" was certainly the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Hendrix, one of the most influential guitarists in rock history, was perfectly complimented by the solid bass playing of Noel Redding and the ferocious drumming of Mitch Mitchell. Aaron's choice of song is immediately recognizable but that does nothing to short-change its impact to this very day. Chris recently watched the rockumentary, Lemmy; centered around one Mr. Kilmister. Still running on the high of viewing this great film, Chris' pick of Motorhead is a natural for this list. Bare-bones, kick-ass rock is featured from Lemmy and co. with a track from the No Remorse compilation that is very reptilian in nature. It's hard to believe that ZZ Top has been around since 1969 and are still kicking ass to this day. With their new EP 'Texicali' the band, thankfully, have ditched the synthesizers that propelled them to the top of the mainstream charts in the 80's in favor of the boogiefied (is that a word?) approach that build their hardcore fanbase throughout the 1970's. Aaron spins a track on this short appetizer to their full album due in the very near future. We couldn't do a show on Rock's greatest trios without including a great group from Canada......The Tea Party! Don't worry, that other awesome trio will be played later in the show. The Tea Party (no affiliation with the political group), rose to prominence in Canada from the 90's through 2005 and are recently reunited. Sporting a sound that could be described as the Doors meets Zeppelin with a side of Ravi Shankar, Chris was very surprised when he stumbled upon this group while researching for this episode and gives you a taste of what this little-known (outside of Canada) band sounds like. Formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1966, the James Gang never achieved the breakthrough success that singer/guitarist Joe Walsh would later enjoy with The Eagles and his solo career but this was a very important band for the late 1960's and early 1970's that need to be heard and appreciated. Aaron's funky pick of a song from 1970's James Gang Rides Again is a riff that is just as awesome today as when it was released. Chris' next pick of Rush is mandatory in order to keep Canadian listeners from making a trip to Nashville with pitchforks in hand. Aside from that, Rush is a great band and Chris' pick of a track off of their brand new Clockwork Angels album is quite possibly the heaviest song that Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart have ever produced. Sublime was one of those bands that was pretty much over by the time they had a chance to enjoy the fruits of their labor. With the untimely death of singer Bradley Nowell, the band has since gone on to perform with a different singer but has failed to capture the ska/rock/punk mix they were able to conjure with Nowell. Aaron's song choice for this episode is a shining example of what could have been. No list of greatest rock trios would be complete without a mention of Cream. One of the very first supergroups, Cream consisted of Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton. Bruce's experimental jazz-like bass lines and Baker's heavy-handed drumming were perfect compliments to Clapton's blues-based noisefests that were produced from the earliest days of the wah-wah pedal and Chris' song choice is a stunning reminder of how prolific this band was. Possibly the most underrated rock trio ever, King's X has plowed ahead through 30+ years of trials, tribulations, and tons of great music. It's truly criminal that this band has not received the mainstream support that it so richly deserves. The soulful playing and singing of bassist Dug Pinnick, the soaring solos and harmony parts of guitarist Ty Tabor, and the swinging, powerful drumming of Jerry Gaskill fuels this Texas-born trios amazing balance of heavy meets melodic rock. Chris' song choice from 1994's Dogman album showcases the tightness and tenacity that is King's X. Known as the band that killed glam, Nirvana exploded onto the world's stage with their 1991 album Nevermind and went on to become one of the most influential bands of the modern era. Aaron decided to go back further and showcase a track from the band's pre-success era album Bleach and you'll also hear the story behind the song. We close things out with a track from three guys from New York City that has a license to ill. While the Beastie Boys have never been known as hard rock or heavy metal, there's no denying that this track from the Ill Communication album will certainly get you pumped for a night out (or an ambush).
