This week we look to the stars for inspiration for our show theme. Oh yeah! We are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. A band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands who contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Chequered Past – “A World Gone Wild” from Chequered Past (1984)California Breed – “Midnight Oil” from California Breed (2014)BackBeat Band – “Rock & Roll Music” from BackBeat – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1994)Brides Of Destruction – “Brace Yourself” from Brides Of Destruction (2004)Robin Trower - “Life On Earth” from BLT (1981)Down ‘N' Outz – “By Tonight” from My ReGeneration (2010)Metal Allegiance – “Wait Until Tomorrow” from Metal Allegiance (2015)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

Brought to you by The Publicity Works Agency specializing in authors & musicians Remember We shine only when We make you shine! Call us today at 941-567-6193 for a free PR evaluation! KINGS X architected a catalog of seminal releases. KERRANG! famously scored their 1988 full-length debut, Out of the Silent Planet, with a rare “5-out-of-5-stars.” On its heels, the landmark Gretchen Goes to Nebraska continues to inspire think pieces with Ultimate Classic Rock going as far to proclaim, “no one else has crafted anything remotely like it.” They notably appeared on the soundtrack to Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, and Guitar World christened the self-titled King's X one of “The 30 Greatest Rock Guitar Albums of 1992” (a year notably highlighted by Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power, Alice in Chains' Dirt, Megadeth's Countdown To Extinction, Dream Theater's Images and Words, and many more). Following Dogman, the group graced the stage of Woodstock 1994 and toured with everyone from Pearl Jam and AC/DC to Mötley Crüe and Iron Maiden. They also attracted one of the most diehard fanbases in music. Their first full-length studio offering in 14 years, Three Sides of One, represents the culmination of this trip and of a bond forged way back in 1979. E06 King's X is an American Rock Trio and featuring two songs - We Were Born To Be Loved and The Difference (in the Garden of St. Anne's In this episode of The Add To My Playlist Podcast, we focus in on the amazing, Kings X King's X is an American rock band that originated in 1979 in Springfield, Missouri. They were first called The Edge and later became Sneak Preview before settling on its current name in 1985. The band's current lineup has remained intact for more than three decades, consisting of vocalist and bassist Doug Pinnick, drummer Jerry Gaskill and guitarist Ty Tabor. Their music combines progressive metal, funk and soul with vocal arrangements influenced by gospel, blues, and British Invasion rock groups. Despite a largely underground reputation as the "musician's musicians", King's X was pivotal in the early development of progressive metal, From the Faith Hope Love album - King's X is a 3 piece band that have some of the most intricate arrangements both musically and vocally - for me the end of this song is a masterpiece - the pauses, hesitations, breaks and runs just make me smile - start at the 3:00 minute mark… 3:37 has a great drum break, the song ending just keeps going and going and going - this is the Energizer bunny song for sure! King's X - We Were Born To Be Loved For something completely different, and to demonstrate the versatility of this band check out my favorite acoustic tune from King's X - this tune has rich rich rich harmonies! This is a master class on acoustic guitar arrangements. His career began in earnest when a young John Elefante auditioned as the new lead singer and keyboardist for Kansas, in 1981. That year, the band was one of the top-grossing concert acts in the world and Elefante had never been in a band apart from his family. Although several of the top vocalists of the day applied for the job (e.g. Sammy Hagar, Doug Pinnick, Jim Stafford), Elefante received the part.Elefante sang the lead vocals and performed keyboards on two Kansas albums. He was also a major songwriting contributor (along with lead guitarist/keyboardist/songwriter Kerry Livgren). On 1982's Vinyl Confessions, he co-wrote and sang the No. 4 Billboard Mainstream Rock hit, "Play the Game Tonight". He also wrote the acoustic-based classic "Chasing Shadows", along with the Top 40 single, "Right Away". The next year, on the following album, Drastic Measures, he wrote the early MTV favorite, "Fight Fire with Fire", which remains the band's highest charting single at No. 3 (Mainstream Rock) as well as a staple of Kansas' live shows to this day. Elefante was also responsible for "Everybody's My Friend," which was released as the second single from the album and reached No. 34 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.Around this time the band began to buckle under the increasing strain of maintaining the consistent radio hits and record company commercial expectations. In addition, contemporary pop music was quickly becoming antithetical to the band's organic, sophisticated aesthetic. A new age of sequenced synthesizers and drum machines confronted Kansas with the near-impossible challenge of maintaining their musical essence and commercial integrity. In 1984, on the retrospective collection The Best of Kansas, Elefante wrote the album's one new track, "Perfect Lover". That same year Elefante, Kerry Livgren, and Dave Hope left Kansas. In 1985, "Young and Innocent" appeared on the soundtrack to St. Elmo's Fire and was credited to "Elefante" as a collaborative effort by brothers John and Dino Elefante.1985–1989Elefante discovered another calling while still with Kansas—record producer. In 1984, he produced Perfect Timing for ground-breaking Southern California group, Sweet Comfort Band. While not a major commercial success, Petra's Back to the Street was a Grammy-nominated, breakthrough, commercial success for both Elefante and the band. He also contributed songwriting, keyboards, background vocals and engineering to the effort. With both John and Dino Elefante as the band's primary producers, Petra's already popular Christian pop/rock niche was given a timely boost. Their accolades include multiple gold albums, 10 consecutive CCM Magazine Reader's Choice Awards, induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Hard Rock Cafe, and the only artist to ever have four albums in the SoundScan top-100 Christian chart. In 1987 while producing a various artists album called California Metal, the album's production team of John and Dino Elefante ended up one track short and they decided to add a song written for Kansas called "Wasn't It Love" (originally entitled "What About Love") under the name Mastedon. Regency later requested a full-length album which became Mastedon's debut, It's a Jungle Out There.Closing out the decade, Elefante had produced five major label albums, and performed on 12. Over the next five years, Elefante worked at an almost frenetic pace as one of the most in-demand producers in Nashville. In addition to Petra's further releases, he worked as the producer on 30 other albums. He usually performed on the releases as well, often sharing songwriting credits, as well. Elefante was committed to his role as producer, eschewing other opportunities such as an offer to replace Bobby Kimball as lead singer for Grammy winners, Toto.

Drummer, singer, and songwriter Jerry Gaskill founded the progressive metal band King's X in 1983. A native of Bridgeton, New Jersey, Gaskill began playing at a young age, forming a band with his father and brother and playing his first gig at the age of seven. After playing in bands throughout high school, he became heavily involved in the Christian faith and enrolled at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. Not long after arriving in Springfield, he befriended bassist Doug Pinnick and the two formed a sturdy rhythm section, backing up artists like future Petra singer Greg X. Volz and guitarist Phil Keaggy. After trying out various combos of their own, Gaskill and Pinnick were joined by guitarist Ty Tabor and the trio, then called Sneak Preview, relocated to Houston, Texas. Changing their name to King's X in 1987, they eventually signed with metal label Megaforce and released their debut, Out of the Silent Planet, a year later. A prog trio with a strong melodic bent and elaborate three-part harmonies, King's X have enjoyed a successful career with stints on Atlantic, Metal Blade, and InsideOut Music. Gaskill's contributions as drummer, writer, and occasional lead singer are an integral part of King's X's sound. In 2004, he released his solo debut, Come Somewhere, which was recorded and produced by bandmate Ty Tabor. In addition to his work with King's X, Gaskill has contributed to side projects by his two bandmates as well as albums by blues guitarist Jay Hooks and New Jersey songwriter Bob Burger. After suffering a heart attack in early 2012, Gaskill's home was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy later that same year. Waylaid by a second heart attack in 2014, he rallied to release his second solo LP, Love & Scars. The album was released in October 2015 and featured guest spots from Billy Sheehan, Phil Keaggy, Earl Slick, and others.       Some Things That Come Up:  -South Jersey Roots to Springfield, M), to Houston  -The Texas Guitar Center Drum Off  -Depot Warehouse Gig, 1991 -4 Decades of Brotherhood,  -Touring with Phil Keaggy -Jerry's first real drum  -Jerry and the Knights  -No Training  -2 Heart Attacks, Physicals -Kings X writing and rehearsal style  -Red Wine, Workouts -Solo Records and Solo Gigs  -Singing and Drumming  -Dogman vs. Gretchen -Yes to clicks  -2017 Namm Jam  -Dixon Drums -New Record and 2022 Tour Dates -The Stowaways   Follow:  facebook.com/JerryGaskill Twitter: @jerrygaskill   The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success. My interview with Guitarcore pioneer Bill Lonero was apparently his first on a podcast. I told Bill my prediction was that he would soon start receiving requests to be on other podcasts. Enter Los Angeles based guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and host of The Iconoclast Music Podcast, Greg Marra. Lonero was soon featured on Greg's podcast, and I've now had the pleasure of interviewing Greg for this podcast. His band Plenty Heavy has a new album called Colossus Maximus. The track Paper Machete from that album is featured at the end of this episode. I discovered during our conversation that Greg is friends with Doug Pinnick of King's X. Greg and I are both big fans of Kings X. He told me that when he finally committed himself to singing in a lead vocal capacity, that Pinnick was a source of encouragement. He in no way compares himself vocally to greatness of Pinnick, but you can definitely hear the influence. Marra's overriding sentiment on music ed Greg started playing guitar at age 6, but didn't have his first guitar lesson until he was about 17. By junior year of high school, he started taking every music class he could get into, a pattern he continued into junior college and privately. His overriding sentiment on music education is that one need only listen to greats like Jeff Beck or Clapton to learn most everything they need to know. What we talked about He has a lot going for him including endorsements, a great band, a regular gig at NAMM, great online presence, his own record label, a family, lots of very cool musician friends, some of which you'll hear mentioned in this episode. I could go on and on. We talk about a lot of cool stuff, including Dave Navarro's podcast, the return of Greg's own Iconoclast Music Podcast, songwriting, the early years and the anatomy of his career, how some equipment companies (like some people) don't seem to understand “relationship first marketing”, music education, YouTube, G4, NAMM and more. We only just met, but he struck me as a really cool guy. I hope to see his band Plenty Heavy sometime very soon.
