[07:14] John steps up to join Virgin Atlantic as VP of Sales and Marketing leading a much larger than at US Airways, spread across nine US cities. [09:17] John is challenged to deliver on Marketing's promises and transition to be VP Customer Service. [18:55] The challenges of the very beginnings of remote work: teleworking or telecommuting. Remote working was a small percentage of workdays in 2006. [20:35] John starts selling remote services and finds a general lack of acceptance. [21:33] The fully-remote services company originally started to serve underemployed and under-resourced workers. [22:46] Fully-remote-served customer service was an important niche market. [23:36] Key points of resistance to fully-remote services—especially “I don't think I could do it myself”. [24:30] Mavericks made the leap, but John sees the inflection point as happening in March 2020. [25:09] The next move, with Apple, is fully on-site—a tough transition for John. [22:55] The points of resistance from companies are easily managed, except for one. [25:08] From consulting for remote work with Apple to working for Apple back home in Ireland, but in a traditional brick-and-mortar call center. He tunes into team members who excel at remote working. [34:12] Painful personal experiences teach John what does NOT work in hybrid meetings. [35:30] Pre-pandemic, office-based leaders start staying at home to participate equitably in meetings. [37:44] 24/7 coverage teaches asynchronous, well-documented hand-offs and timing adjustments to wait for local contributions. [39:55] John leads the company-wide initiative to remote in March 2020, as decentralized communication is humanized and normalized. [42:50] The three most important areas to focus on that ensured emergency remote working success. [44:55] The HR department had already compiled a “how to” book of the customer service department's remote work experiences which became very useful for the whole company. [45:31] The biggest challenge Shopify faced was for people to embrace their own vulnerability. [47:10] John's seemingly ageist concern about the irrelevance of using a 2015 approach to solve a 2023 problem. [49:09] The future is about communities, not companies, especially to reduce the isolation that often accompanies remote working. [51:12] How remote workers need to proactively design their work weeks, including nurturing non-work activities and setting boundaries. [51:35] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: To reduce feelings of isolation, encourage remote working employees to connect with people regularly—virtually and in person in their local area—supporting humans' need for community. [53:25] How John identifies people who have good work-life balance—he uncovers their passion! You can't go back 5, 7, 8, 10 years and tell me what it used to be like because those conditions don't exist anymore.”

Bijal Trivedi is a journalist and an author. She spent 8 years writing the book, Breath from Salt. It's an in-depth look at how parents with CF children banded together to start what is now the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Trivedi weaves a beautiful story of all the players, from CFF President Bob Beall, to Joe and Kathy O'Donnell's involvement and all the other parents intertwined along the way. The scientists contributions are worked into the book beautifully. You'll learn things about CF you may have never heard before, and you'll be cheering on those scientists. Trivedi recently became Senior Science Editor at National Geographic. When Trivedi began Breath of Salt in 2012 she was familiar with a drug that would only help 4 percent of the CF population, she realized how quickly science was moving in the field of CF, and decided to write about the history of CF, and all who had a role in getting us to where we are today (2022). No one in Trivedi's family has CF, but we certainly consider her family. Her book teaches us not only about the beginning of the CF Foundation, but also about the parents who built it. Our stories (Laura Bonnell and Beth Vanstone) are very similar in many respects. This podcast features Laura Bonnell and Beth Vanstone (two CF mom's). Vanstone lives in Canada where she has worked tirelessly to make CF drugs more accessible not only to her daughter Madi, but to other CF families. She is a huge advocate and friend of The Bonnell Foundation.Links:Bijal's book: Breath from Salt: https://www.amazon.com/Breath-Salt-Patients-Families-Medicine/dp/1948836378For more information on The Bonnell Foundation find us at https://thebonnellfoundation.org/Vertex Pharma - the science of possibility. https://www.vrtx.comSponsored by https://www.fordfund.org/globalcaringmonth The original music in this podcast is performed by Kevin Allan, who happens to have Cystic Fibrosis. Ireland's government has a very important decision to make. CETA, a trade agreement between Canada and the EU, is currently awaiting ratification from the Oireachtas, and the clock is ticking. Many other EU member States have signed the deal, and the longer Ireland waits, the more negative the consequences. Multilateralism has never been more important for the Irish economy and business model, particularly as the country faces the twin threats of Brexit and Covid. In this episode of Ibec Voices, Ibec CEO Danny McCoy outlines the significant economic and societal benefits that trade deals, such as CETA, can deliver; and he makes a strong case for why the Irish Government must ratify this deal as soon as possible. We also hear from John Riordan, Director of Customer Support and Chair of the Board at e-commerce platform Shopify International, a Canadian-based multinational with a substantial presence in Ireland. John outlines the Shopify story in Ireland, the unique business and cultural links between Ireland and Canada, and how CETA has been advancing the cause of connected business between Ireland and Canada since 2017. He also explains the importance of sustainability to Shopify's current and future business strategy.

We talked about the origins of the comic, how the boys met and the inspirations behind it. But don’t worry! It’s still a SILENCE! so you can expect variable sound quality and lengthy digressions into Deadline, Free Tapes, Menswear, Dig!, The Specials AKA, Cate Le Bon, the UK Small Press, Thought Bubble, FJ McMahon, Barbelith and much. much more. It was a warm summer evening in a nice pub in Waterloo, with two of my very favourite people in comics, so I hope you enjoy… @silencepod @bobsymindless @frasergeesin @thebeastmustdie silencepodcast@gmail.com You can support us using Patreon if you like.

On May 11th 2017, Gary Lactus, The Beast Must Die and Lord Nuneaton Savage sat atop the Bishop’s Finger with a the finest fellows a bunch of pod bods could ever hope for. Small Press was the theme of the evening but first we started off with Tam Laniado leading a tribute to the recently rest-in-peaced Leo Baxendale. Proceedings proceeded with some rambling chat which covered such small press obscurities as Bum Child by Tim Leopard, OHM by an odd chap that John Bishop met at a convention many years ago, Fast Fiction, Meow by Cyriak and L.I.F.E. Brigade by the delusional genius C. A. Stormon. There was also talk of Viz and the indestructible Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles After a pleasant refill we decided it would be sensible to talk to the creators present. This meant John Riordan going on about Hitsville UK, Douglas Noble waffling on about Strip For Me and Gareth Hopkins guffing about Intercorstal. Luckily there’s some top top chat about daytime TV wine experts to liven things up. After a lovely singalong we turned off the recording devices and indulged in social activities which shall go unrecorded and spoken of in hushed tones as the years passed thus turning all present for this wonderful evening into legends.
Sep. 5, 2015. John Riordan discusses "They Are All My Family: A Daring Rescue in the Chaos of Saigon's Fall" at the 2015 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. Speaker Biography: A former vice president of Citibank, John Riordan’s new book, “They Are All My Family: A Daring Rescue in the Chaos of Saigon’s Fall," tells the tale of his efforts to save his coworkers during the Vietnam War. While working as an assistant manager for Citibank in Saigon, he was ordered to evacuate as the North Vietnamese Army approached and was taken to Hong Kong, where he devised a plan to enable his South Vietnamese coworkers to qualify for evacuation by the U.S. In 1982, Riordan left banking to focus on real estate and now owns and runs an environmental farm in Wisconsin next to some really big buffalo.
