In this episode, ‘Understanding the Future of Climate Resilient Affordable Housing', with Bijal Brambhatt we discuss the effects of climate change on the urban poor, climate resilience, and its impact on their living standards. We start the discussion by understanding what urban poverty means, followed by the difference between urban poverty and rural poverty. We further discuss the rapid urbanization, job opportunities available for the poor, classification of labor, quality of life, and the reasons for migration to the urban area. Then our discourse moves towards the ground realities in the slums and settlements and pattern of migration and how they use their own network to find both housing and work opportunities. She also explains the unpaid and unnoticed efforts of women in supporting their families. Further, the discussion moves towards understanding the locations where the slums are situated and how incremental housing takes place. Then we discuss the problems faced due to climate change by the urban poor such as the heat island effect, disease outbreaks, and lack of sanitation and clean water. Our guest today is a world-class brand strategist and business coach. She has a superpower, right? The superpower is she's an amazing mom-wife and getting her clients to win. She's the founder and CEO at launch, which is designed for established businesses, looking to scale their revenue, brand awareness, and impact. And today, we're going to be going in-depth on how to scale your revenue using your brand vision.  1:39 So it's a crazy story. I did not want to be an entrepreneur. I'm not actually formally trained in branding or graphic design. But I got abruptly fired from my job back in like 2018. And it just came completely out of the blue through like knocked the socks out of me. And like after I left that job, I realized, you know, when I got let go, and it was after having my second child, speaking of being a supermom, in a baby, having a second baby, the employer was like, we don't feel like you're as focused. I'm like, I'm nursing an infant. They're like, Yeah, we just use just like typical corporate America. And after I left there, even though I had a lot of different interviews out there, I realized I could no longer be employed by someone else. And I wanted to come out here and I was like, never wanted a business. But I knew I could design a business and space in a place, even if it was virtual, where people could work remotely, and be able to have the freedoms and still be passionate about what I did. And so I first started with commercial interior design, which is designing hotels and corporate office spaces in that and quickly when COVID hit as all the writing on the wall. And I was like Guess who's never going into an office again, most of America. And I switched and pivoted to online. And so we have been the brand and business coaching agency ever since. 3:47 What's this online world? You mean, you can make money online, and there became a ton of people who came on the boat in like March of 2020. And then a few months after, right after COVID? Well, the market got saturated with a lot of new people who weren't used to being online. So what happened from there, the competition got stiffer, but the market didn't get shrink, the market didn't get smaller. And I think that's where a lot of people are confused is like, you know what, like, if you look at Tesla, the electric car market right now is expanding. It's actually getting bigger, but Tesla's market share is getting smaller, not because oh, man, it's oversaturated is because there are more competitors in there. So this is where you know exactly what you're saying, Jason. Branding then becomes the differentiator, to position yourself as the authority as opposed to just being an authority. And that's really what will help distinguish you and help you stand out and create that brand awareness that you and I were talking about. 5:24 The same thing with your entrepreneurial journey, you need to plan for obstacles as if they're traffic lights and stop signs. Yeah, just are they didn't happen to you. And when you start to realize it's a universal truth, you start to realize that the obstacle is not really the obstacle, which takes me to point to my dream is my biggest obstacle, which is her most of it was myself. 100%, my own imposter syndrome thoughts like, well, you're not really a branding person, but you don't have a degree and who says you can do this? And like, all the head trash that comes with putting yourself out there? And putting your brand out there, right, like you're putting yourself out there in the most vulnerable way?   “ And I don't want to tell everyone My glory story. Once I'm at like 100 million. Bijal Trivedi is a journalist and an author. She spent 8 years writing the book, Breath from Salt.  It's an in-depth look at how parents with CF children banded together to start what is now the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Trivedi weaves a beautiful story of all the players, from CFF President Bob Beall, to Joe and Kathy O'Donnell's involvement and all the other parents intertwined along the way.  The scientists contributions are worked into the book beautifully.  You'll learn things about CF you may have never heard before, and you'll be cheering on those scientists. Trivedi recently became Senior Science Editor at National Geographic.   When Trivedi began Breath of Salt in 2012 she was familiar with a drug that would only help 4 percent of the CF population, she realized how quickly science was moving in the field of CF, and decided to write about the history of CF, and all who had a role in getting us to where we are today (2022).  No one in Trivedi's family has CF, but we certainly consider her family.  Her book teaches us not only about the beginning of the CF Foundation, but also about the parents who built it.  Our stories (Laura Bonnell and Beth Vanstone) are very similar in many respects. Bijal Shah shares story of the meteoric rise of Guild Education, the Denver-based ed tech firm that has quickly emerged as the leading marketplace for corporate education. True to its B-Corporation status, Guild focuses on building shared success for its corporate partners, adult learners and education and training providers. As a new start-up, Guild was able to sign up the U.S.'s largest private employer, Wal-Mart to provide tuition-free learning opportunities to its more than 2 million employees. This helped attract other leading employers, like Target, Chipotle, Macy's and Waste Management, and has enabled Guild to grow from 75 to more than 1300 employees in the last 4 years. Bijal Patel, 31, is CEO of Coast Redwood Hospitality and the youngest chair of the California Hotel & Lodging Association. He's made even more history at CHLA by agreeing to serve an unprecedented second term as the lodging industry emerges from the coronavirus pandemic. Patel is a third-generation hotelier. Cystic fibrosis was once a mysterious disease that killed infants and children. Now it could be the key to healing millions with genetic diseases of every type—from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's to diabetes and sickle cell anemia. In 1974, Joey O'Donnell was born with strange symptoms.
