Thank you to the folks at Sustain (https://sustainoss.org/) for providing the hosting account for CHAOSSCast! CHAOSScast – Episode 114 In this episode of CHAOSScast, hosts Georg Link and Nicole Huesman engage in a deep discussion with Christian Taylor, Terence (Tex) McCutcheon, and Johnny Kelly about measuring and enhancing open source community health through innovative methods. Christian and his team share their experiences in implementing the 'paid open source model' within the Cardano blockchain community, designed to retain and motivate contributors. The panel discusses a variety of topics, including governance models, the integration of AI for report generation, and the challenges of balancing open source principles with corporate interests. They also explore specific tools and metrics used to evaluate project health and community engagement, providing an illuminating look into the future of open source development. Hit the download button now! [00:01:40] Our guests give a brief introduction. [00:04:37] Christian provides a non-technical intro to Cardano, a top blockchain focused on peer reviewed, academic rigor. [00:06:07] Johnny explains Cardano's high decentralization via SPOs, DReps, and community tools like GovTool, and Christian outlines how open source ties in. [00:09:39] Christian talks about open source governance and Intersect and explains Intersect serves like the Linux Foundation for Cardano, holding code, facilitating contribution ladders, and launching an incubation program. [00:13:06] Georg gives a summary for those who are new: Cardano's treasury is funded via blockchain transaction fees. This funding supports open source development, tools, documentation, and maintainers, and Christian elaborates more about this. [00:15:39] Johnny details governance and funding decisions and Christian emphasizes the transparency and checks and balance system. [00:17:08] Nicole raises concerns about aligning paid models with open source ethos and Christian discusses Intersect's neutral, community-owned governance structure and internal checks and Johnny shares a link about the current members and the elective process within Intersect. [00:20:37] Christian shares using Bitergia and CHAOSS metrics to build out Cardano's open source health dashboard. Focus areas were response times, geographic contributions, contribution ladders, and project maturity. [00:26:03] Tex shares their dashboard is public and useful for spotting high-impact projects. He aims to improve documentation standards and repo governance practices. [00:31:05] Georg gives a brief description of the “jellyfish diagrams” that show how developers connect across projects. [00:33:26] Christian shares their approach to using AI in metrics reporting and Tex emphasizes AI assists analysis but doesn't replace human validation. [00:37:10] Nicole asks if the paid open source model is being shared externally. Christian confirms they presented the model at open source summits, validated it with leading experts, stress-tested with community input, and outlines a six month pilot of the model. Value Adds (Picks) of the week: [00:44:06] Georg's pick is going on his first cruise. [00:45:07] Christian's pick is family. [00:45:54] Tex's pick is simplicity. [00:46:38] Johnny's pick is the Calidus Pool-Key. [00:47:54] Nicole's pick is meeting and interviewing Dr. Laura Kelly. *Panelists: * Georg Link Nicole Huesman Guests: Christian Taylor Terence (Tex) McCutcheon Johnny Kelly Links: CHAOSS (https://chaoss.community/) CHAOSS Project X (https://twitter.com/chaossproj?lang=en) CHAOSScast Podcast (https://podcast.chaoss.community/) CHAOSS YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@CHAOSStube/videos) podcast@chaoss.community (mailto:podcast@chaoss.community) Georg Link Website (https://georg.link/) Nicole Huesman X (https://twitter.com/uoduckswtd) Christian Taylor X (https://x.com/DeOpenSourceGuy) Christian Taylor LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/christian-taylor-766b01b1/) Terence McCutcheon X (https://x.com/Tmacqt87) Terence McCutcheon LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/tex-oso/) Johnny Kelly X (https://x.com/intertreeJK) Johnny Kelly LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/intertreejk/) Open Source Office at Intersect MBO (YouTube) (https://www.youtube.com/@osointersectmbo) Cardano (https://cardano.org/) Cardano GovTool (https://gov.tools/) Intersect (https://www.intersectmbo.org/) Intersect Committees (https://committees.docs.intersectmbo.org/intersect-open-source-committee/about/readme/committee-members) Open Source Office (OSO) (https://committees.docs.intersectmbo.org/intersect-open-source-committee/about/open-source-office-oso) Bitergia Repo Maturity Reports (https://committees.docs.intersectmbo.org/intersect-open-source-committee/all-monthly-reports/bitergia-repo-maturity-reports) Edinburgh Decentralization Index Dashboard (https://informatics.ed.ac.uk/blockchain/edi/dashboard) Contribution Ladder Framework (https://committees.docs.intersectmbo.org/intersect-open-source-committee/policies/contribution-ladder-framework) Current Open Source Committee Members list and Term Rotation Schedules (https://committees.docs.intersectmbo.org/intersect-open-source-committee/about/readme/committee-members) Bitergia Monthly Maturity Reports for 2025 (https://committees.docs.intersectmbo.org/intersect-open-source-committee/all-monthly-reports/bitergia-repo-maturity-reports/monthly-maturity-reports-2025) Introductory Article on POSM (Intersect) (https://www.intersectmbo.org/news/the-paid-open-source-model) Intersecting Open Source and Sustainability: A Paid Open Source Model for Ecosystems Full PDF (https://493748844-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FLBdnzp0eZpGri9sVpseI%2Fuploads%2FvuisqFT8uCyKSDgpNmyW%2FPaid%20Open%20Source%20Model-%20LIVE.pdf?alt=media&token=577c8bd1-c9df-43a0-8b57-e883ddb1254a) Bitergia Dashboard (https://intersectmbo.biterg.io/app/dashboards#/view/Overview) The Paid Open Source Model Concept (YouTube) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4PgqaPWNT4) New Calidus Pool-Key for SPOs and Services Interacting with Pools (https://forum.cardano.org/t/new-calidus-pool-key-for-spos-and-services-interacting-with-pools/143812) She Lights the Way (https://shelightstheway.com/) Dr. Laura Kelly (https://drlaurakelly.com/) Special Guests: Johnny Kelly, Christian Taylor, and Terence (Tex) McCutheon.

Kenny Hickey joins the Talk Toomey podcast to discuss *Sun Don't Shine* and their latest single, "The Promise Song." He shares the story of Johnny Kelly's unexpected allergic reaction to a bee sting, which landed him in urgent care. Kenny talks about the band's songwriting process, recording challenges, and the decision to change their name from *Eye Am* due to trademark issues. He also reflects on the difficulties of being a frontman and the importance of maintaining a raw, natural sound in their music. The discussion covers the evolution of the name "Type O Negative", which went through multiple changes, including "New Minority" and "Repulsion," before settling on "Type O Negative," inspired by tattoos and blood type. They reminisce about the early hardcore scene and how the band's imagery was influenced by negative symbolism. The conversation shifts to the band's upcoming plans, revealing that they are focusing on writing and recording a full-length album instead of an EP. They reflect on the longevity of their peers, like Biohazard and Life of Agony, and the realities of aging as musicians. The chat ends with thoughts on nostalgia, band reunions, and the impact of legacy acts like Pantera. Joshua Toomey on Facebook/Twitter @talktoomeytalk Support Toomey on Patreon www.patreon.com/talktoomey Shop Talk Toomey Depop www.depop.com/talktoomey Subscribe to Talk Toomey on YouTube for in-depth interviews with the most exciting artists in aggressive music, deep dives into iconic artists' discography, and more. #talktoomey #typeonegative #sundontshine #kennyhickey

TYPE O NEGATIVE guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer Johnny Kelly look back at their time with the iconic goth metal band on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast TYPE O NEGATIVE, the iconic gothic metal band known for their unique blend of dark humor and brooding melodies, delivered another dose of their signature sound with their 2003 album, “Life Is Killing Me.” Released on June 17, 2003, this album marked a significant addition to the band's discography. “Life Is Killing Me” retained the band's characteristic mix of doom-laden riffs, Peter Steele‘s deep, haunting vocals, and lyrics that often tread the line between melancholic and macabre. The album explored a wide range of themes, from the struggles of daily life to the band's notorious wit, all set against a backdrop of heavy, atmospheric music. TYPE O NEGATIVE formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1989. Led by the charismatic and enigmatic frontman Peter Steele, the band gained notoriety for their dark and melancholic sound, blending elements of doom metal, gothic rock, and industrial music. With a unique blend of dark humor and introspection, their albums, including "Bloody Kisses" and "October Rust," became iconic in the gothic and metal music scenes. Tragically, Peter Steele's death in 2010 marked the end of the band, but their influential music continues to captivate listeners worldwide. In the interview, Kenny and Johnny discuss the turbulent times while making the "Life Is Killing Me" album, they're favorite TYPE O NEGATIVE songs, a possible live album and much more.

In the podcast, Mark discusses the evolution of KILL DEVIL HILL, the band's new additions, his love for Wolfgang Van Halen and much more. Hailing from Pensacola, Florida, OCTOBER NOIR emerged onto the music scene in 2016 as a gothic/doom metal ensemble. Since their inception, they have crafted and shared their unique sonic vision through three full-length albums and an impressive collection of nine stand-alone singles. The brainchild of Tom Noir, OCTOBER NOIR was conceived in late 2016, and their inaugural album, "The Haunting and the Powerful," saw the light of day on October 19, 2017. Following the album's release, Tom Noir welcomed talented musicians into the fold for their live performances. Drummer Daniel "Stickz" Bryant, guitarist Troy Lambert, and keyboardist Jackie "Jaxxx" Daniel added depth and energy to the band's live shows. In 2018, OCTOBER NOIR expanded their repertoire by releasing two remarkable singles, both of which were captivating covers. "Pictures of Matchstick Men (RIPeter)," a reinterpretation of the classic by STATUS QUO and TYPE O NEGATIVE, graced listeners' ears on April 14, 2018. Subsequently, on July 5, 2018, they offered their rendition of "Lips like Sugar," originally by ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN, showcasing their versatility and creative prowess. In the second portion of the podcast, Tom discusses the band's influence, the new album "Letters To Existence", his use of torture devices and more. Johnny is mostly known for his tenure as the drummer for Type O Negative, but his full resume includes Quiet Riot, Danzig, Silvertomb, A Pale Horse Named Death, Kill Devil Kill, and his latest endeavor, Eye Am. Johnny is a hell of a hard-hitting player, but his awareness of dynamics and the development of a theme while crafting parts is the reason he's in the third decade of a very fruitful career. Robert Cooper and Mark Radulich present their Type O Negative Career Retrospective 1989–2010.Type O Negative were an American gothic metal band formed in Brooklyn, New York City in 1989 by Peter Steele (bass, lead vocals), Kenny Hickey (guitar, co-lead vocals), Josh Silver (keyboards, backing vocals), and Sal Abruscato (drums, percussion), who was later replaced by Johnny Kelly. Their lyrical emphasis on themes of romance, depression, and death resulted in the nickname "the Drab Four" (in homage to the Beatles' "Fab Four" moniker). The band went platinum with 1993's Bloody Kisses, and gold with 1996's October Rust, and gained a fanbase through seven studio albums, two best-of compilations, and concert DVDs.Original Airdate 1/15/2015Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsosnapchat: markkind76FB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulich

TYPE O NEGATIVE guitarist Kenny Hickey talks his new band EYE AM while PUPIL SLICER drummer Josh Andrews discusses his group's new album "Blossom" on The Loaded Radio Podcast  EYE AM, the new band featuring former TYPE O NEGATIVE members Kenny Hickey (guitar/vocals) and Johnny Kelly (drums),along with Kirk Windstein (guitar, vocals; CROWBAR, DOWN, KINGDOM OF SORROW) and Todd Strange (CROWBAR, DOWN),has released its debut single, "Dreams Always Die With The Sun", via Corpse Paint Records.  A music video for the track was recently filmed by Mike Holderbeast at Joy Theater in New Orleans, Louisiana and can be seen below. "Dreams Always Die With The Sun" was written by Hickey and Windstein and was recorded in February by bassist Roger Lima of LESS THAN JAKE at his studio called The Moathouse in Gainesville, Florida. The track was mixed and mastered by Jay Ruston. In addition to their work with TYPE O NEGATIVE, Hickey and Kelly had previously collaborated in a band called SEVENTH VOID, which released one full-length album, "Heaven Is Gone", in 2009, and SILVERTOMB, which issued "Edge Of Existence" in 2019. Kenny discusses the formation of EYE AM, upcoming releases from TYPE O NEGATIVE, the possibility of a Peter Steele tribute concert and much more in this week's show. The second portion of the podcast this week features PUPIL SLICER drummer Josh Andrews. "Mirrors", the debut album from London-based trio PUPIL SLICER, stood out as one of the most exceptional and chaotic metal releases of 2021. With a fearless approach, the band effortlessly embraced a multitude of styles, traversing frenetic mathcore, ominous grind, impassioned hardcore, crushing death metal, and ethereal post-metal. The album housed intense bursts of terror like the 47-second onslaught of "Stabbing Spiders," as well as sprawling, shoegazing epics like "Collective Unconscious." PUPIL SLICER exhibited equal prowess in both realms, leaving listeners captivated. Now, with their sci-fi concept album "Blossom", the band's sophomore effort trudges even further into their creative abilities and delivers a pulverizing audio experience of incredible proportions. In the podcast, Josh discusses the creation of "Blossom", how the London based trio came together and preparing to take one of the biggest stages in metal.

We talk about his lighter tour schedule. He told me playing with QR is much different than he was used to playing with Type O Negative. He explained how they tour on a completely different circuit that is new to him. He recalled touring with Motley Crue in the mid-90s. "It was a tough tour for them" he said about the guys in Crue. He also shared some other tour horror stories. As far as playing with a guy like Rudy Sarzo? "It's surreal". He went into what it's like to play with such a rock legend. He admitted he was somewhat start struck, but now has become a friend. Johnny also tells me what Jizzy Pearl is like. I've never had the chance to meet him before, so I'm looking forward to it. Of course we had to talk a little hockey. He's a big hockey fan, so I had to ask him about his thoughts on the Stanley Cup playoffs. He also told me who he thinks the late Vinnie Paul would've been rooting for. He's in a new band called Eye Am. How did that start? What's going on with that project? Johnny fills us in on all things about that band too. Great to catch up with one of my favorite dudes! -Meltdown- https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/

Peter was one of the most charismatic frontmen that ever graced a studio or a stage. Him and his band mates (Keith Alexander, Louie Beato, Kenny Hickey, Josh Silver, Sal Abruscato, and Johnny Kelly) are responsible for influencing generations of musicians, whether they be from his home city or Brooklyn (Life of Agony, Biohazard), or from Louisiana (Crowbar, or from overseas (Paradise Lost). However, with great art, there will be admirers and those that want to censor it. In this episode, I talk with Baron Misuraca of Carnivore A.D., who was friends with Peter when he founded Sheer Terror with Paul Bearer. In fact, the current members of Carnivore A.D. were all thanked in the “Retaliation” album (Baron in Sheer Terror, Chuck in The Crumbsuckers, and Joe in Whiplash), so there is legitimate history there, and there are songs in the Carnivore A.D. set list written by Peter that generate controversy today by those who judge the songs at face value without listening to the context and intent of the song. Also, Baron and I discuss the idea of “Cancel Culture,” how it was around since the days of Igor Stravinsky in the early 20th Century, how it's easy for a group that espouses negative viewpoints to adopt any symbol and change its meaning, and how he handles it. Also, we discuss how Peter himself may have handled it if he were still here. Thank you to Baron Misuraca for partaking in this discussion, and thank you to Peter Steele for the music and the memories.
