Johnny Kelly From Sun Don't Shine, Quiet Riot, Silvertomb and Type O Negative on the Loaded Radio Podcast Johnny Kelly has been a staple in the heavy music world for decades. Best known for his tenure as the drummer for Type O Negative, Kelly has kept himself incredibly busy over the years, working with Danzig, Quiet Riot, Kill Devil Hill, and more. On this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast, Johnny joins us to discuss everything from his time in Type O Negative to his thoughts on a potential Peter Steele tribute concert and what it would take to pull off such an event the right way.
Kenny Hickey joins the Talk Toomey podcast to discuss *Sun Don't Shine* and their latest single, "The Promise Song." He shares the story of Johnny Kelly's unexpected allergic reaction to a bee sting, which landed him in urgent care. Kenny talks about the band's songwriting process, recording challenges, and the decision to change their name from *Eye Am* due to trademark issues. He also reflects on the difficulties of being a frontman and the importance of maintaining a raw, natural sound in their music. The discussion covers the evolution of the name "Type O Negative", which went through multiple changes, including "New Minority" and "Repulsion," before settling on "Type O Negative," inspired by tattoos and blood type. They reminisce about the early hardcore scene and how the band's imagery was influenced by negative symbolism. The conversation shifts to the band's upcoming plans, revealing that they are focusing on writing and recording a full-length album instead of an EP. They reflect on the longevity of their peers, like Biohazard and Life of Agony, and the realities of aging as musicians. The chat ends with thoughts on nostalgia, band reunions, and the impact of legacy acts like Pantera. This week: the 2nd in a newer series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Born on April 14, 1965, in Middlesex, England, Windstein is most notably recognized as a founding member of the influential sludge metal band CROWBAR. His distinctive guitar work, characterized by crushing riffs and a unique sonic signature, has been instrumental in shaping the sound of CROWBAR. TYPE O NEGATIVE guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer Johnny Kelly look back at their time with the iconic goth metal band on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast TYPE O NEGATIVE, the iconic gothic metal band known for their unique blend of dark humor and brooding melodies, delivered another dose of their signature sound with their 2003 album, “Life Is Killing Me.” Released on June 17, 2003, this album marked a significant addition to the band's discography. “Life Is Killing Me” retained the band's characteristic mix of doom-laden riffs, Peter Steele‘s deep, haunting vocals, and lyrics that often tread the line between melancholic and macabre. The album explored a wide range of themes, from the struggles of daily life to the band's notorious wit, all set against a backdrop of heavy, atmospheric music. TYPE O NEGATIVE formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1989. Led by the charismatic and enigmatic frontman Peter Steele, the band gained notoriety for their dark and melancholic sound, blending elements of doom metal, gothic rock, and industrial music. With a unique blend of dark humor and introspection, their albums, including "Bloody Kisses" and "October Rust," became iconic in the gothic and metal music scenes. Tragically, Peter Steele's death in 2010 marked the end of the band, but their influential music continues to captivate listeners worldwide. In the interview, Kenny and Johnny discuss the turbulent times while making the "Life Is Killing Me" album, they're favorite TYPE O NEGATIVE songs, a possible live album and much more.
KILL DEVIL HILL guitarist Mark Zavon and OCTOBER NOIR frontman Tom Noir join us on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast KILL DEVIL HILL is set to unveil its third album, "Seas Of Oblivion," on September 20th. This LP, meticulously crafted by engineer Chris Collier, who handled production, engineering, mixing, and mastering duties, seamlessly blends classic hard rock with elements of metal. The result is a musical journey that bridges the gap between contemporary and classic metal, reminiscent of iconic bands like SOUNDGARDEN and ALICE IN CHAINS. With "Seas Of Oblivion," KILL DEVIL HILL demonstrates its versatility, fearlessly experimenting with various styles, and pushing the boundaries of expectations to deliver a fresh and exhilarating experience for their devoted fans. Prior to the album's release, KILL DEVIL HILL has already treated fans to a taste of what's to come with the launch of four singles: "Playing With Fire," "Blood In The Water," "You Can't Kill Me California," and "Before The Devil Knows." Formed in 2011 by legendary drummer Vinny Appice (formerly of BLACK SABBATH and DIO) and bassist Rex Brown (PANTERA), KILL DEVIL HILL has undergone a couple of lineup changes, yet continues with a pummeling vengeance. The band's current roster includes Johnny Kelly (formerly of TYPE O NEGATIVE) on drums, Zavon on guitar, Dewey Bragg on vocals, and Matt Snell (formerly of FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH) on bass. In the podcast, Mark discusses the evolution of KILL DEVIL HILL, the band's new additions, his love for Wolfgang Van Halen and much more. Hailing from Pensacola, Florida, OCTOBER NOIR emerged onto the music scene in 2016 as a gothic/doom metal ensemble. Since their inception, they have crafted and shared their unique sonic vision through three full-length albums and an impressive collection of nine stand-alone singles. The brainchild of Tom Noir, OCTOBER NOIR was conceived in late 2016, and their inaugural album, "The Haunting and the Powerful," saw the light of day on October 19, 2017. Following the album's release, Tom Noir welcomed talented musicians into the fold for their live performances. Drummer Daniel "Stickz" Bryant, guitarist Troy Lambert, and keyboardist Jackie "Jaxxx" Daniel added depth and energy to the band's live shows. In 2018, OCTOBER NOIR expanded their repertoire by releasing two remarkable singles, both of which were captivating covers. "Pictures of Matchstick Men (RIPeter)," a reinterpretation of the classic by STATUS QUO and TYPE O NEGATIVE, graced listeners' ears on April 14, 2018. Subsequently, on July 5, 2018, they offered their rendition of "Lips like Sugar," originally by ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN, showcasing their versatility and creative prowess. In the second portion of the podcast, Tom discusses the band's influence, the new album "Letters To Existence", his use of torture devices and more. Now, with their sci-fi concept album "Blossom", the band's sophomore effort trudges even further into their creative abilities and delivers a pulverizing audio experience of incredible proportions. Johnny Kelly of Quiet Riot is my latest Talkin' Rock with Meltdown guest. If you're in the Detroit area, the Quiet Riot guys are playing at Smugglers Run on June 9th. We talk about his lighter tour schedule. He told me playing with QR is much different than he was used to playing with Type O Negative. He explained how they tour on a completely different circuit that is new to him. He recalled touring with Motley Crue in the mid-90s. "It was a tough tour for them" he said about the guys in Crue. He also shared some other tour horror stories. As far as playing with a guy like Rudy Sarzo? "It's surreal". He went into what it's like to play with such a rock legend. He admitted he was somewhat start struck, but now has become a friend. Johnny also tells me what Jizzy Pearl is like. I've never had the chance to meet him before, so I'm looking forward to it. Of course we had to talk a little hockey. He's a big hockey fan, so I had to ask him about his thoughts on the Stanley Cup playoffs. He also told me who he thinks the late Vinnie Paul would've been rooting for. He's in a new band called Eye Am. How did that start? What's going on with that project? Johnny fills us in on all things about that band too. Great to catch up with one of my favorite dudes! -Meltdown- https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/

On this episode of CHRIS AKIN PRESENTS..., Chris and Erik chat with ex-Crowbar bassist Todd "Sexy T" Strange. Strange called in to talk about his new band EYE AM; a supergroup featuring Kirk Windstein of Crowbar, Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly of Type O Negative. They talk about the first song they have recorded, future plans for the band, his throughts on the new Pantera tour and more.
Johnny Kelly joins Joshua Toomey and Talk Toomey to discuss his latest project, Eye Am. The band consists of Kirk Windstein, Todd Strange, Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly. The Eye Am single will be released June 2nd through Corpse Paint Records. Toomey and Johnny talk about if he is still the drummer of Danzig and Johnny gives his thoughts on The Misfits reunion. He dives into getting the call to play with Black Label Society and having to learn the set quickly. Johnny also runs down how he joined Quiet Riot and goes down memory lane with Type O Negative. Type O tours with Life of Agony, Nine Inch Nails and Motley Crue are discussed. Johnny looks fondly on touring with Pantera. The guys end with some drum talk and more on Eye Am!!
Long time Danzig bassist Steve Zing zoomed in to talk about his side project: Blak29 who just released their 2nd album "The Waiting" (out now). Here's what we talked about: "The Waiting" album (0-9) Glenn Danzig teaches how to play bass guitar (9-10) "Destroyer" song w/Tommy Victor and Johnny Kelly (10-13) Touring with Blak29 (13-15) Danzig 2 at Toyota Arena May of 2022 (15-16) Danzig sings Elvis (16-17) Samhain begining (17-23) Mandatory Metallica (23-end)
Pipemanradio talks with Steve Zing to discuss the music video for "blackout" which will be coming out in April. And as well the current album "The Wating" and all things Blak29 and Steve Zing.Coming from a background boasting such names as Samhain, Mourning Noise, and even the unholy legion that is Danzig, Steve Zing presents a new record from his current band and passion project, Blak29. The upcoming album The Waiting will be released on Cleopatra Records on March 3 and will be available on all streaming platforms. “Bleeding Love” is about the torments of life in this world, whether it be driven by love, anger, or the push and pull of what we are supposed to believe in and the fact that we are to think that someone else's beliefs is the right answer,” says Zing. "Raging Wars in my world, I'm coming back, coming back for more." The song starts off with a driving riff and some grunge-fueled vocals that wouldn't sound out of place in an amphitheater or a small biker bar. It's heavy yet catchy—If you aren't singing along to the refrain by the end of the song, you aren't doing it right. While other songs on the record lean harder into grooves or heavy riffs, this track has some distinct flavors of Alice in Chains paired with the very unique stylings of Blak29. Featuring Zing on vocals and drums, Dan Tracey bass and guitar, both wrote and produced the album. The songs on this record pick up where the first album left off, but also hit things harder than ever before. Zing also recruited Danzig bandmate Johnny Kelly, Tommy Victor, and Jyrki 69 vocalist of The 69 Eyes, for guest spots on the record. The sampling of songs on the album range from snarling, rock fury to more contemporary thrashers backed by the power of a storied musical career and a full command of the genre.Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. Peter was one of the most charismatic frontmen that ever graced a studio or a stage. Him and his band mates (Keith Alexander, Louie Beato, Kenny Hickey, Josh Silver, Sal Abruscato, and Johnny Kelly) are responsible for influencing generations of musicians, whether they be from his home city or Brooklyn (Life of Agony, Biohazard), or from Louisiana (Crowbar, or from overseas (Paradise Lost). However, with great art, there will be admirers and those that want to censor it. In this episode, I talk with Baron Misuraca of Carnivore A.D., who was friends with Peter when he founded Sheer Terror with Paul Bearer. In fact, the current members of Carnivore A.D. were all thanked in the “Retaliation” album (Baron in Sheer Terror, Chuck in The Crumbsuckers, and Joe in Whiplash), so there is legitimate history there, and there are songs in the Carnivore A.D. set list written by Peter that generate controversy today by those who judge the songs at face value without listening to the context and intent of the song. Also, Baron and I discuss the idea of “Cancel Culture,” how it was around since the days of Igor Stravinsky in the early 20th Century, how it's easy for a group that espouses negative viewpoints to adopt any symbol and change its meaning, and how he handles it. Also, we discuss how Peter himself may have handled it if he were still here. Thank you to Baron Misuraca for partaking in this discussion, and thank you to Peter Steele for the music and the memories. Welcome brothers & sisters in blood, to another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This time we focus on one of our favorite bands of all time; the amazingly creepy-cool champions of Vinland: TYPE O NEGATIVE!. Join us in our Halloween-themed celebration of this band's 7 killer albums and the big man that led this group: Peter Steele. If you don't know this band, or if you are only vaguely familiar with them; do yourself a favor and check this out. https://linktr.ee/TempleOfBleh https://store.typeonegative.net/ https://typeonegative.net/ https://www.runoutgroovevinyl.com/Today we're rolling out the Pantone 369 carpet for Type O Negative's debut album, Slow, Deep and Hard, released this week in 1991. The 30th anniversary reissue of the record is being released on Run Out Groove, and is available for preorder on the link above.Type O Negative are undeniably one of the most important flagship acts for Roadrunner Records, through the strength of delivering the label's first Gold record, Bloody Kisses - or by simply being one of the most interesting bands to come out of such an interesting era for music.I'm eternally grateful to Kenny and Johnny for taking the time to celebrate Slow, Deep and Hard, and talk about the record label that pushed them over the Brooklyn Bridge.
Post Date: April 25, 2019. After seeing a Black Water Rising show at Dingbatz in Clifton, NJ, J-Bunny talks with vocalist and guitarist Rob Traynor. First they clear up some confusion about how the band started, including a bit about a previous project with Johnny Kelly and Kenny Hickey of Type O Negative. They discuss the band's name and what it means, the band's sound, and how streaming impacts bands on their level. They also talk a bit about Rob's copyright infringement lawsuit against the NJ Devils, and a little bit about his previous band Dust to Dust. Podcast intro "Rock Intro 3" courtesy of audionautix.com. "Payback" appears on Black Water Rising's album Electrified, and "Brother Go on" appears on their self-titled album. Both songs were included with the permission of Rob Traynor.

From playing in local Brooklyn bands to becoming the drummer of "Type O Negative" right after "Bloody Kisses" was released to playing drums for "Danzig" for almost twenty years at this point... my guest for Episode 179 of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace is none other than Johnny Kelly! The man has been busy. We talk about old school Brooklyn, the stretch of bars down Flatbush Avenue in the late 80's and early 90's. Other than "Type O Negative" and "Danzig", he played for "A Pale Horse Named Death" alongside Sal Abruscato, the former drummer of "Type O" and "Life of Agony", "Seventh Void" which became "Silvertomb" with former members of "Type O", "Inhuman" and "Agnostic Front". He has filled in for "Black Label Society" and "Kill Devil Hill", Rex Brown and Vinny Appice's band. He has a side project, basically just for fun called "Hookers And Blow". I had a great time choppin' it up with my homie from Brooklyn. Rest In Peace Green Man. Enjoy.

Wooly, Conan and Brian Carroll talk you through the action from the weekend's and Borrisoleigh manager Johnny Kelly joins on the line after winning the Munster title.
With the sad passing of Peter Steele in 2010, the groundbreaking Type O Negative was all but finished. As cornerstones of that act, Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly went on to form the Doom Metal outfit Seventh Void. As time went on, Hickey began writing material that he felt called for a bit more orchestrated layering, more density. The music changed enough that he felt a new name was in order. Thus, Silvertomb was born. After releasing a single “Insomnia” last year, the band toured to get the word out and build anticipation for their upcoming album. The time has come, and now “Edge of Existence” is set to be released. On listening to tracks such as “Waiting”, and “Right of Passage” it looks to be a fantastic collection of material. Kenny phoned in to discuss the new album, and just how the addition of new members and new approaches to music led to the creation of “Edge of Existence”.
For many years I struggled with church. Some were boring. Some churches seemed to be all about the money. Some churches seemed stuck on rituals (forgetting that their members came seeking help, support, and love). So I brought on pastor Johnny Kelly to discuss another hard-hitting topic... Why Church?

The clash of the ash and the pride of local clubs. It's been a golden age for Portumna GAA and its legendary hurlers, All Ireland Club Champions for the last two years and pushing for a third title in 2010. In Club Heroes we meet the champion hurlers of Portumna and find out why, for many players, a club victory is even more important than a county title. As team player Leo Smith puts it 'for a small town like Portumna theres a great buzz around the place. I mean you've grown up with these guys. You'd die for each other out there. It means so much to be out there and representing your club, your county, your province.' In this radio feature we hear the story of Portumna from the players themselves, a story of brothers, like the famous Canning brothers including team captain and corner back Ollie Canning. It's been a golden decade for the club which is now considered one of the most successful teams in the country. The senior hurlers have just celebrated their 3-in-a-row county victory and are aiming for another 3-in-a-row in the All-Ireland Finals. Given that the Club only gained senior status in 1992 its success has been phenomenal. In this special documentary we meet senior team manager, Johnny Kelly, captain Ollie canning and players Leo Smith and Eoin Lynch. For Ollie the bond between the team players is as close, if not closer, than brothers. 'I know if any of the lads where in trouble I'd stand up for them same as I'd stand up for the brothers'. The spirit that binds them together is, they say, more than sport, its about family, locality and belonging. The sense of pride when they bring home the cup is often better than All Ireland county titles. 'Its what we dream about since we were young lads' says Leo Smith 'hurling together in the under 10, under 12. Running out with your club mates that's what it's all about'.
