Recorded on 18 July 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Julie Maxwell The clinical management of children who are questioning their gender or experiencing gender dysphoria is a hotly contested topic throughout the world. In 2020 NHS England commissioned an independent review of services for children with gender dysphoria. In April this year the final report was produced after almost 4 years of work and research. The findings and recommendations have sparked interest and caused significant debate internationally. This webinar will look briefly at some of the key findings and recommendations. Dr Julie Maxwell has over 20 years experience working in Community Paediatrics. She works for Lovewise, a charity which seeks to help parents, youth groups and schools by providing presentations and resources on the subjects of marriage, sex and relationships from a Christian perspective. These roles led Dr Maxwell to become interested in the management of gender dysphoria in children and over the past 8 years she has become increasingly involved in the debate both in secular clinical and Christian worlds. Dr Maxwell is particularly interested in how we as Christian medial professionals as well as churches can best support children who are questioning their gender and their families. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

Perhaps the most contentious political, medical and social issue of the day is how to treat and care for young people who are questioning or experiencing distress around their sex and gender. In this episode we speak with Christian community paediatrician Julie Maxwell about the rise in children reporting gender dysphoria, the evidence base behind controversial treatments such as puberty-blockers, and how we as followers of Jesus can speak compassionately and faithfully into the maelstrom of invective and opinion on this important topic. From Philippa Gregory to Robert Harris, historical novelists are increasingly turning to the 17th century for inspiration. In this episode, writer Julie Maxwell joins Miranda and Paul to talk about her new book 'The Image of the King', which tells the story of Charles I's trial and execution from the dual perspective of the doomed monarch and of the great poet John Milton, a supporter of Cromwell and the Parliamentary cause.  Julie reveals how she went about recreating the lives and motivations of these two vivid and contrasting characters.  '1666 and All That' is presented by Paul Lay and Miranda Malins. Miranda is the author of two novels about Oliver Cromwell's family: 'The Puritan Princess' (2020) and 'The Rebel Daughter' (2022), both published by Orion Press. Paul's book 'Providence Lost: the Rise and Fall of Cromwell's Protectorate' was published in 2020 by Head of Zeus. The producer is Hugh Costello. Original music by George Taylor. Should Christians use a trans* identified person’s chosen pronouns (i.e. ones that don’t align with their biological sex)? I (Preston) have argued for “pronoun hospitality,” that Christians should use a person’s pronouns. And Julie generally agrees with this perspective, but she believes that it’s sometimes better for the long term well-being for trans* identified children and adolescents when their parents don’t use their chosen pronouns. In case you didn’t know, this is super controversial! Which is why we need to have this conversation. In this episode, I talk with Julie about her perspective, evidence for and against it, and various other things related to the discussion about how to best treat trans*-identified children and teens. Julie is a licensed pediatrician in the U.K. and has written extensively about Gender Dysphoria and trans* identities. Support PrestonSupport Preston by going to patreon.comVenmo: @Preston-Sprinkle-1Connect with PrestonTwitter | @PrestonSprinkleInstagram | @preston.sprinkleYoutube | Preston SprinkleCheck out his website prestonsprinkle.comIf you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave a review.

Perfusion imaging employs concepts that date back to the early 1830s, and it leverages hardware and software that emerged around the same time at multidetector helical CT scans. But it has only become popular in recent years for thrombectomy decision-making. If I'm being honest, I often never use it for this purpose. So what other purposes might it serve? And how does it work? This week, we review the fundamental concepts of perfusion CT, its utility in stroke care, and how it might prove useful for other neurologic conditions as well. ** IF YOU’RE TAKING YOUR NEUROLOGY BOARDS THIS SUMMER, CHECK OUT THE PENN NEUROLOGY BOARD REVIEW COURSE. If you ever scored concert tickets, prizes or station swag, Julie probably had a hand in it. But there were other artists who were more intimately involved with one another and their artistic process-- they were married, or were lovers. Such is the case with both Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning --both of whom married women who were incredible artists in their own right. Interestingly, and sadly, when these two spouses are mentioned, it’s very rare that we are treated to sincere commentary just about their works of art. More often than not, we are, instead, given explanations of how these women measure up to their (admittedly more famous) husbands, and are relegated either to a supporting role, or just plain seen as not good enough in comparison. Why is it that such talented women continue to have their posthumous careers and stories marked and shaped by their husbands?   Please SUBSCRIBE and REVIEW our show on Apple Podcasts!  Twitter / Facebook/ Instagram Episode Credits Production and Editing by Kaboonki.
