The USS Forrestal was one of the largest aircraft carriers ever built. She served for nearly four decades before being decommissioned in 1993 and then she was scrapped in 2015. During the Vietnam War, the carrier experienced a devastating tragedy with bombs on board the ship that led to several fires and over a hundred men dead. And because of that, stories of ghosts on the ship have been told about her. One particular ghost was known as George. Join us for the history and hauntings of the USS Forrestal. State Rep. Doug Mann (D-Columbia) is not seeking re-election in November. Representative Mann was elected to the Missouri House in 2022 and is wrapping up his first term in Jefferson City. Democrat Gregg Bush, a nurse who ran for Columbia's city council last year, faces Republican John Lane in November. Mr. Lane owned Johnny's Beanery in Columbia and is a former Missouri Restaurant Association president. The district includes Columbia and Boone County. 939 the Eagle's Mike Murphy reports Mr. Bush has pledged that if elected, he'll only vote for Mizzou funding when there is a written agreement from Mizzou chancellor Dr. Mun Choi to bargain with the Laborers Local 955. Mr. Lane was host Fred Parry's guest Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's "CEO Roundtable." Mr. Lane tells listeners that Mr. Bush's position on Mizzou funding is one of the key reasons he got in the race. Lane says Mizzou funding is critical not just for Columbia and Boone County, but for residents across Missouri. Mr. Lane was born in Columbia but grew up in west-central Missouri's Clinton, which is in Henry County. Lane attended college in Columbia and worked for Dennis Harper, the former owner of Harpo's. He says that experience helped him decide to purchase Johnny's Beanery from Karen Miller, where he worked for 14 years. He says Johnny's Beanery was best known for its wings, hamburgers and Cuban sandwiches. Mr. Lane got in the race late and has about six weeks to campaign. He discusses the advantages and disadvantages of that. Fred and Mr. Lane also discuss the Roy Blunt NextGen Center and the expansion of MU Healthcare during the interview. They also looked back at a popular Columbia dining location called the "University Club." It has since closed:

I met Karen Miller on Canada Day in 2022.  I was running out of options to get close enough to Bill's Island, off of Grand Manan, New Brunswick, so I could see American Oystercatchers.  If the ferry had not been late, I'd have never met Karen and her husband Bill, who had been ferrying birders out to the island all day, to see these rare visitors to Canada. Then, on December 21 I was given an early Christmas present, in the form of a Green-tailed Towhee, another crazy-rare bird to show up in New Brunswick,(all that on top of the Stellar's Sea Eagle, just three weeks earlier).  It was there in Sackville, that I ran into Karen and Bill again, at first not realizing they were the friendly birders who took me out on their boat. Another friend, Mitch Doucet, told me she had the record for New Brunswick Big Years.  We chatted a bit that December afternoon, after seeing the towhee, and I wanted to get to know more about her life in birding and her amazing, record setting New Brunswick Big Year. Recently she joined me for an afternoon of conversation about birds and fond memories of her Big Year. Enjoy!

Strange though it may seem, we can tone our brain tissue the same way we tone our muscles. The fitness of our gray matter depends on how well we take care of ourselves. If we exercise, manage our stress, get plenty of sleep, and eat right, our brain function improves. We add more, better brain tissue. Dr. Jennifer Bramen and Dr. Karen Miller work as a team at the Pacific Brain Health Center to help people keep their brains fit, especially as we age. Dr. Bramen is a neuroscientist who specializes in brain imaging. Dr. Karen Miller is a geropsychologist and clinical neuropsychologist with three decades of experience dealing with aging brains. They work together to develop brain health lifestyle programs that combine physical exercise and brain training to stave of neurological decline in older adults and help people with healthy brains keep them that way. We recently got a chance to talk with literacy expert/author Kelly Gallagher to discuss why students aren't engaged, the implications and impact that has on students and teachers, and what sort of things we can do to keep students engaged in learning.

Why do we live long, and why don't we live longer? The aging process is inevitable, but a decline in function in many domains of a woman's health is not inevitable. Our bones, joints, and muscles at age 60 will not be like they were at age 20, but knowing what contributes to the aging process can help us prepare for the aging process. Geriatric gynecologist Dr. Karen Miller joins this episode of 7 Domains of Women's Health—the second in a three-episode discussion on aging—to talk about women's aging bodies, and how to age with a healthy physical body, mind, and soul.

In episode 52 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering the citizen journalist, news organisations expecting images for free and the rise of the magazine promoted photo competition. Plus this week art director/photographer Geoff Waring takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' After studying Graphic Design at Manchester University in the 1980's Geoff Waring moved back to London and began a career as a magazine designer and art director. He held the position of art director at Elle UK in the late 80's, and Design Director at Vogue UK in the 1990's. After four years at Vogue Condé Nast asked him to art direct Vogue Australia. Sixteen issues later he returned to London to launch Red magazine (The logo is in his handwriting). In 1999 he left Red to work on a major new women's website that never went live, and he returned to print media and Condé Nast to launch Glamour UK magazine in 2001. In 2005 he launched Easy Living  magazine where he stayed as Creative Director for four years before moving to Hearst UK to revamp Good Housekeeping magazine among other projects. In 2015 he chose to work solely as a freelance art director for brands including, Boden, M&S, Gina, Monsoon, Cath Kidston and Clarks shoes. Twice a year he designs and art direct the arts and culture magazine Perfect Bound with other industry professionals who like Geoff found they were not being given the creative freedom in commercial magazines anymore and decided to create their own publication. As a commissioned photographer he works for brands including House of Fraser, Karen Miller, Gina, and various Hearst published magazines. Not content with working as a photographer and art director Geoff has also written and illustrated several award winning children's books published in the UK and across the world, including the USA, France, Sweden, Taiwan and Korea.
