Today's guest, Hannah Burke, is a Ph.D. candidate at Colorado State University who recently, along with her co-authors, had an article published about nature-based pediatric occupational therapy. It was a scoping review of the literature that's out there in our field and the outcomes are fascinating. In this episode, Hannah shares why they chose to do a scoping review, what gray literature is, what her research uncovered, and the struggles around trying to solidify a definition of nature-based OT. We also discuss the importance of interdisciplinary work with other allied health professionals in nature-based therapy. What struck me the most, though, was Hannah's reminder that while research is incredibly valuable in our field, the research is just a tool to guide you in your practice and that a holistic approach will always serve us best and create the best outcomes for our clients. We'll discuss: [03:04] Hannah's article and how she got her research published and out into the world, plus the difference between a scoping review and a systematic review [10:05] Hannah's research and review process for the article [20:12] The struggle of trying to define nature-based occupational therapy without getting too specific, and what Hannah hopes the definition will include going forward [32:40] The theories informing the work of nature-based practices [39:22] Hannah shares some of the outcomes from the review on natured-based OT and intervention [48:51] Why interdisciplinary work with other allied health professionals is so important in nature-based therapy [53:13] The unique considerations that we need to make in our skill sets, knowledge, and competencies as therapists in order to do work outdoors [01:00:38] How research is a tool and guide to use in our practices and not necessarily the be-all and end-all Connect with Hannah: Follow Hannah on Instagram Resources from this episode: Abstract of Hannah's article: Nature-Based Pediatric Occupational Therapy: A Scoping Review Textbook: Sensory Integration: Theory and Practice by Anita C. Kathyrn Rose is the Founder of getWise and the wiseHer Foundation. getWise is an expert advice platform that curates a range of business specialists, and small businesses and people who are seeking help can schedule time with the person whose expertise best matches their needs. It's not free, but it's very affordable, and Kathryn shares how this value exchange that getWise delivers benefits everyone. In full disclosure, it's a platform that I am proud to be a part of. And in my experience, this structure is really rewarding because you are able to pay it forward to others who are seeking it out and committed to learning. The wiseHer Foundation, then, is a non-profit organization designed to support women and small businesses around the globe with advisory services, education, and resources on-demand. This is a similar platform specifically for women, and proceeds go towards funding grants for women-owned businesses. What Kathryn has done with her career (her forced second career, as you'll learn about in a few moments) is incredible. But I think what I appreciate most about this episode is that Kathryn shares with us the grit, curiosity, community, and years of hard work that are really necessary to become successful — stories that I don't think we can ever hear too much of in the era of curated lives on social media. They wonder about the actual credentials of the people that they might hire as consultants, or small agencies, or one-off thought leaders. To help answer these common concerns, Karen welcomes innovator and serial entrepreneur Kathryn Rose. She is the Founder and CEO of wiseHer, a global knowledge marketplace that helps women business owners and professionals overcome unique challenges to access one-on-one, on-demand service from executives, coaches, mentors, and other educational resources that can accelerate either their business or their own career growth. Listen in as Kathryn discusses how wiseHer helps female entrepreneurs and professionals get practical and tactical advice to get unstuck and succeed in their careers. 3 MAJOR POINTS DISCUSSED “Free” is not a strategy. One big mistake that a lot of consultants make is to give free advice. There is, quite literally, no value if it's free. The value one ascribes to their time is directly proportional to their marketability. As Kathryn says: “It's easier to get from any number to your real number than zero to any number.” Selling isn't about selling, but about buying. Selling isn't about you or even your product. Selling is about solving your buyer's challenges. When people struggle with sales, it's usually because they're so focused on selling someone on the features of a product, instead of actually asking the potential customer what they value and then, if there is indeed a need, demonstrating the benefits of the product. Relationships are built around expectations. When working with a consultant, it almost doesn't matter what your growth strategy is. A good consultant will meet you at the level you're currently at, and move at the pace that you both agree is most comfortable, even if it means taking baby steps. By having expectations set, you “deliver value on both sides” of the relationship. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Nova Fortier sent a beautifully satirical question: "Mark, I’ve been listening to your podcast on and off for a couple of years. I enjoy most of your podcasts, your updates on where life finds you. But, when you label something ‘female’ or ‘women’ on your podcasts, I am just extremely confused as to why you included any male voices on your latest podcast? I mean, truly, now, why must I endure male voices on a titled podcast to showcase female voices? Looking at all the musical recordings and references throughout history, surely the male ego has been adequately stroked to allow for women to, truly, be able to showcase their own musical abilities without treading on the chrystalline male ego? Sure, you, as a master musician in your own right, can do better, to research an entirely female show when it is marked as such? Yes, that was stroking your fragile male ego, because, after listening to you for so long, I’ve learned that you need such proddings. Simple male, will you never evolve to meet your female sister, ever?" Trip McCool emailed: "Marc, I want to thank you for playing "Gravy In The Grave". Both my wife and I had Grandfathers who fought in WWI and suffered poisoning from Mustard Gas. It was tough time for young Irish men who returned to a world with little to no support for the insanities of war. The ravages of the mind, body and soul. My Grandfather Frederick Michael Dougherty, was one of those who "Let the women do the thinking and the men do the drinking." Add four children, the stock market crash, the great depression and 'the old boy' was off for the greener pastures of the mind. When my father said, "You don't know what growing up tough is." he meant it! "You want gravy with your spuds! Sweet Jesus will give ya Gravy in The Grave." Keep your guard up!" James Martin emailed a photo: "I am frying up some giblet doggy treats while doing some thanksgiving meal prep. Someone in my house is very excited about these treats." Michael Carey emailed a photo: "always enjoy listening to your podcast when I am out walking my wife’s sulcatta tortoise.  Here is the pic of Groot the tortoise and Iggy the iguana in West Palm Beach Florida"

Composer Kathryn Rose began Cecilia's List to help music directors find sacred choral music written by women. Her site links directors to music grouped by Season and by Lectionary readings. Kathryn Rose hails from Canada, and is now based in London and studying for a PhD in composition at the University of Aberdeen. We talk about Cecilia’s List and how musicians can more intentionally program music written by women. We also discuss Kathryn’s music and why she uses creative commons licensing for her music. Finally, we talk about Evensong and West Gallery Music, a style popular in the 1700s and early 1800s. Enjoying this podcast episode?
