EP 420- Nikolaos Ntirlis- Opening & Engine Advice from a Top Theoretician, Author, and Correspondence Player

Perpetual Chess Podcast

Nikolaos Ntirlis is a Correspondence chess champion, and computer engineer who has become well known in the chess world for his vast opening expertise. Nikolaos is quite skilled at finding original opening ideas, and has grown popular through his books, and by highlighting new opening ideas on his Twitter/X account. The ideas Nikos suggests have often seen quick adoption by Grandmasters, and he has even seen moves he highlighted subsequently appear in the games of Hikaru Nakamura and Anish Girl. In fact, GM Giri wrote the Foreword to Nicolaos' newest book, the excellent  Reimagining 1. E4. The book offers new ideas for White across many defenses to 1. E4, and explains opening concepts clearly without bombarding you with opening theory. In our conversation, we discussed the origins of Nikolaos' opening enthusiasm, how best to use engines, as well as which defenses to 1.e4 were most challenging to combat theoretically. Nikolaos is also an accomplished chess trainer who hasworked with the national team of Denmark. In our conversation, he offered some helpful chess improvement advice with a philosophical bent. Lastly, we discussed some of  Nicolaos' other interests including correspondence chess, chess books, and martial arts. Timestamps of topics discussed are below.  0:02- What is the origin of Nikos' popular Twitter threads, where he suggests lines that have been used by GMs like Nakamura, Carlsen, and others? Mentioned: Nikolaos' X account here: https://x.com/NikolaosNtirlis/status/1852645135487558104 10:00- Was there any defense against 1. E4 where it was particularly challenging to find fresh ideas? 14:30- What rating range is this book best suited for?  16:00- Does Nikos agree that one should learn opening ideas, rather than openings?  Mentioned: Nikos' interview with Charlyze van Zyl for Forward Chess: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyanVxu48lk 18:30- Patreon mailbag question: What did Nikos discover about an original line that Niemann played against Kramnik?  Mentioned Han Schut's YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/hanschut Read the Twitter thread in question: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1841408942737420435.html 19:00- Who are Nikos' favorite opening theoreticians?  25:00- What is Nikos' advice for how amateurs should use engines?  32:00- Are there any underappreciated openings?  33:00- Nikos' overall chess improvement advice 34:00- Where did Nikos' love for openings start? This week we are joined by the economist, award-winning author, and top Australian player, GM David Smerdon. David is a professor at the University of Queensland. With a statistical background, David is a particular expert in the intersection of statistics and chess and is frequently able to combine his chess expertise with his academic research. Since chess cheating has been in the news again, we begin by getting David's thoughts on the renewed allegations against GM Hans Niemann, as well as the recent concerns about rampant online cheating voiced by GM Vladimir Kramnik. David drew some interesting comparisons between these cheating scandals and a recent one in the academic world. David also had some recently published chess research to discuss, as he and a team of collaborators have recently launched the “Gender Equality in Chess Index. (GECI)” What is the goal of his index and how did they arrive at the numbers?  Lastly, we catch up on David's chess career. As David details, he doesn't have a ton of time to study, but is competing when he can with a specific goal in mind. This week on Perpetual Chess, we are privileged to be joined by the 14th undisputed World Chess Champion, Grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik. GM Kramnik spent decades atop the chess world, and is best known as the man who ended Garry Kasparov's historic reign as World Champion. GM Kramnik is one of the 10 highest rated players of all time, and left a special imprint in his contribution to opening theory, as many of his favorite lines are now embraced by modern chess engines and frequently seen at the elite level. We had a wide-ranging conversation where GM Kramnik discussed his match with Kasparov, the effect of engines on chess, his recent “no-castling” exhibition match with GM Viswanathan Anand, and, of course, his new Chessable course. Vladimir's course is called Thinking in Chess: A How to Guide, and it offers a Super GM level framework on how to think about preventing your opponent's plans. In this episode Eric talks to the Indian number two of Indian chess: Super Grandmaster Pentala Harikrishna (1986) from India about the TATA Steel Chess Tournament 2021. Hari, as he is often called, played for the 8th time in Wijk aan Zee. He tells us how it was to play the first super tournament of 2021 in COVID conditions. He tells us a bit how it was to be tested before every rest day, to be in quarantaine before the event and of course about his games. He scored 50% in the event, after a good start. Harikrishna also has something to say about the Firouzja case and the tie-breaks. Eric and Hari also talk about the first event he played in, back in 2001, in which he shared the stage with players like Kasparov, Anand, Kramnik and Ivanchuk. In the 2021 edition, Hari was the oldest player!  Pentala Harikrishna became the youngest grandmaster from India on 12 September 2001, a record now held by Gukesh D. He was Commonwealth Champion in 2001, World Junior Champion in 2004 and Asian Individual Champion in 2011. Pentala won the Tata Steel Group B in 2012 and the Biel MTO Masters Tournament Open event in 2013. He represented India at seven Chess Olympiads from 2000 to 2012 and won team Bronze at the World Team Chess Championships in 2010. At the Asian Team Championships, Pentala won team gold once, team silver twice and individual bronze once. In July 2020, he won with 5.5 points out of 7 games the Chess960 event, that was part of the chess tournament in Biel. He also represented India in the Online Olympiad 2020 where India won the gold medal along with Russia. In February 2013, Pentala's FIDE rating passed 2700 for the first time. He broke into the top ten players in the world in November 2016 with a FIDE rating of 2768. His current rating (February 2021) is 2730.   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When a kid is asked, what do you want to be when you grow up? Vishwanathan Anand said, "I want to be a world champion." It may have seemed out of reach to many. After all, there was no grandmaster in Chess for India until 18-year-old Vishwanathan "Vishy" Anand took up that challenge. He is a five-time world chess champion. In April 2006, Anand became the fourth player in history to pass the 2800 Elo mark on the FIDE rating list, after Kramnik, Topalov, and Garry Kasparov. He occupied the number one position for 21 months, the sixth-longest period on record. In this episode, I speak to Vishy Anand on his view of the movie The Queen Gambit, on his love for languages (He is fluent in German and Spanish). Anand was the first recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1991–92, India's highest sporting honour. In 2007, he was awarded India's second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, making him the first sportsperson to receive the award.

A lot of ideas we discuss apply not only to chess but also to poker and life in general. Vladimir is one of the most talented World Chess champions of the modern era and some of his insights are invaluable.    We talk about chess engines such as StockFish, the new chess AI - AlphaZero, and how those changed the way we approach studying, and understanding chess as well as what might the future hold and we also talk about the draw-backs of blindly following the engines or poker solvers for that matter. The poker industry is experiencing the same types of changes with the rise of the poker solvers and there are many lessons we can take-away from the chess world.    Vladimir also talks about his journey in chess, the famous match against Gary Kasparov, what it takes to compete at the highest level, how does his preparation look like, his approach to the competition, how Vladimir handles the pressure, aesthetics of chess and his work on creating new exciting variants of chess.    Make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel to stay informed about new videos https://www.youtube.com/RunchuksPoker?sub_confirmation=1   And if you'd like to receive my key takeaways from each latest podcast episode, subscribe to my newsletter https://www.runchukspodcast.com   Twitter: https://twitter.com/RunchuksP   00:00:00 Intro 00:01:42 Chess before and after chess engines 00:08:09 Custom chess engines 00:10:46 Using chess engines for preparation 00:12:04 Evolution of chess engines 00:22:15 Kasparov vs Deep Blue - The End of the Human Race 00:24:23 Vladimir Kramnik vs Deep Fritz 00:26:52 AlphaZero deep learning AI 00:33:49 AlphaZero vs Stockfish differences 00:37:25 Experiment with AlphaZero 00:38:57 AI doesn't explain why it plays a certain way 00:41:04 AlphaZero thinking pattern 00:44:29 Drawbacks of engines for top-level games 00:46:46 Keeping chess entertaining 00:50:59 No Castling Chess (a new variant of chess) 00:57:47 How long would it take to engines to solve No Castling Chess 01:02:56 Understanding aesthetics, patterns instead of memorizing 01:06:27 New arms race 01:09:42 Using a better machine as a decisive advantage 01:12:00 Vladimir's style 01:16:45 What all great players have in common 01:20:06 The human aspect of chess 01:26:59 How Vladimir Kramnik studied Gary Kasparov to become World Champion 01:29:58 Playing even better under high pressure 01:31:50 Knowing yourself and knowing your opponent 01:38:39 Slight advantage line vs chance of playing it well 01:43:51 Creating your unique style 01:46:16 Defeating Gary Kasparov without losing a single game 01:58:22 Emotions taking over 02:02:29 The impact of ego 02:08:52 Decisive career moments 02:16:17 Always be ready to learn 02:17:57 Lack of information is not the problem 02:19:25 New chess variations 02:21:26 How humans are going to use AlphaZero as a studying tool 02:23:43 Wrapping up 02:25:28 One final word of wisdom

My guest this week is Carsten Hensel.  He is a chess organizer and author who  has also spent time as the manager for two elite players- GMs Vladimir Kramnik and GM Peter Leko. Much to the benefit of chess fans, he has written a book about his experiences managing GM Kramnik, called Vladimir Kramnik - The Inside Story of a Chess Genius. The English version of this book will be published by Quality Chess later in November. The published excerpts and this interview suggest that this book will be a must read for those interested in GM Kramnik and/or modern chess history. Here are a few of the highlights of what Carsten Hensel and I discussed:  How did he first encounter GM Kramnik, and how did they come to develop a working relationship?  Carsten reflects on some of Kramnik's most famous matches- a disappointing Candidates loss to GM Alexei Shirov in 1998,  followed by a thrilling World Championship victory over Garry Kasparov in 2000.  What was it like to be the manager of both World Championship participants in the 2004 Leko-Kramnik World Championship match? As a high-level chess organizer and promoter, what are his thoughts on how to pitch corporations on sponsoring chess players and events? This was a fascinating conversation, as Carsten has had a ring side seat to much of modern chess history. Thanks to Carsten for chatting- you can email him here.  If you are interested in learning more about hearing Fred WIlson's old interviews (as mentioned in the introduction)  go to the Perpetual Chess Patreon here.
