Brinley Addington is a country singer/songwriter whose passion for music began at age three after a family trip to Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry. Influenced early on by 90's and traditional country music, the Kingsport, TN native always knew Nashville was in his future and moved to Music City in 2008 to attend Belmont University. Shortly after, he began performing in the legendary honky tonks on lower Broadway and toured the country playing clubs, fairs, festivals, and opening shows for many notable acts including Florida-Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett, Chris Young, Jon Pardi, Marty Stuart, Ronnie Milsap, and more. In 2021, Addington scored his first #1 song as a songwriter with Ryan Hurd and Maren Morris' Grammy and CMA nominated hit, “Chasing After You” and was named one of Spotify's Hot Country Standout Songwriters of the Year for 2021. Addington has also had songs recorded by Parmalee, Tyler Farr, Kameron Marlowe as well as Texas favorites Kevin Fowler and Kyle Park among others. Over the years, Addington has released several recordings of his own which are available now on all major digital platforms.

From there we dive right into all the awful ways people looked for love before Swiping on their phones! (You think it is bad NOW!) From meet cutes over your tighty whities to blind dates because your friend wanted their partner's annoying friend out of the way, all the way to drunk hook ups at the bar, (Forget about video dating, no one actually did that.) Finally, we look at the future of dating. (My adjustable bed or your's) Our Sponsor this week is Harsh Realities, because you are no Pete Davidson. Kyle Park was featured as our guest in Episode #34 and he's back with us today to talk about what he's been up to since we caught up last time. Kyle is a one of the most energetic artists out on the road today. Everything he does, he does with gusto; from the way he tours and performs, clear down the speed he talks. You can just tell this guy is chock-full of energy. “Rewind”, his new single is currently #22 on the Texas Regional Radio Report Chart. And he's got a lot more music in the can and ready to go. I honestly don't know how Kyle finds time to do everything he does. Kyle has recently even started a side project called The Texas Trio with fiddler Jason Roberts, who's played with everyone from Asleep at the Wheel to Willie Nelson, and piano player John Michael Whitby who's been a member of George Strait's Ace in the Hole Band for the last 14 years. Especially exciting for me and our Kansas listeners, Kyle will be playing in Courtland, KS this coming Saturday night for the 57th annual Courtland Funday. There will be live music the entire day in the beer garden with Kyle headlining the street dance after the fireworks show around 10pm that night. I'll be sitting in as a hired gun that afternoon on the beer garden stage with the band Short Notice and another group including 3 of my best friends. I'm sure it's only a short drive from where ever you are, so come join me and party as we take in Kyle's headlining show at the 57th annual Courtland Funday. Now, on to the interview! I'm joined today by Kyle Park, a Texan country musician who started playing country venues when he was only 15 years old. Thirteen years into his professional career, Kyle and his band have played in more than five countries, playing shows from Alaska to Germany, and frequenting more than a dozen states on a regular basis. Unfortunately, touring has stopped completely since the Covid-19 pandemic hit, so I've caught up with Kyle to chat about what he's been doing and how he's been feeling about the whole situation with the music industry and in general. We've had an honest and heartfelt conversation about living as an independent music artist, setting up priorities at these times, and what the future might bring to the endangered music industry. “Every singer-songwriter has to have a good song before the social media content is even seen.” – Kyle Park Time Stamps: 2:15 – Where Kyle lives and how living on a ranch is like. 4:37 – Where Kyle grew up in Texas. 6:54 – How got Kyle into music. 12:00 – Kyle's wish to get more into producing music one day. 14:40 – How Kyle has been using the lockdown time to write songs. 20:30 – The advantages of being an independent artist. 23:30 – How Kyle feels about the current crisis in the music industry. 29:20 – How this situation may lead to less people wanting to be musicians. 33:10 – Why live streaming music has diminishing returns. 42:10 – How ghost kitchen principle could work in the live music industry. 47:35 – The breakdown of the cost of a live gig. 57:24 – Why there are more important things right now than going to a concert. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
One thing that seems to set Texas Country Music and Red Dirt Music apart from the everything else, in my humble opinion, is the unbridled honesty of the artists and their approach to making and performing music. This interview with Kyle Park is a perfect example. Kyle recounts some great stories from his past on his rise in Texas Country Music from the nitty-gritty of his first paying gigs while in college at San Marcos, TX, to touring 180-200 dates a year in his 20’s, to now pulling back a bit and averaging 100-120 dates a year. From getting on stage with Johnny Lee and his band while in his teens, to fronting a cover band made up of musicians including members of George Strait’s “Ace in the Hole” band, Kyle has taken something from all of those types of experiences, added in his own creativity and talent, and created a successful career for himself that is rightly, the envy of others. At the age of 12, Kyle unfortunately lost his father. Kyle partially credits that experience for the reason he now seems to enjoy it when the pressure is put on him in life; whether that be as the front-man and leader of his band, to his time on the golf course. He also tells us how sharing that tough experience from his past with his fans has actually helped him to connect with them on a deeper level today. We get in depth about some of the songs from his latest album, “Don’t Forget Where You Come From”; especially the song “Rio” and how the video for the song came to be. On the eve of Kyle traveling to Europe to play a show at Normandy in November we talk about the amazing opportunities that being in the music industry can bring to those who are lucky enough to be a part of it. Kick your boots off and enjoy the listen! www.kylepark.com We also want to point out that the 55th Annual Courtland Funday is quickly approaching and will be held the last weekend in July. (July 26th & 27th) It will feature all kinds of activities and entertainment including a Saturday night performance by a previous guest on the podcast: Rob Baird. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
On this episode of The Troubadour we are joined by a husband and wife performing, AND songwriting duo, Thom Shepherd and Coley McCabe. Thom is the writer of five #1 singles for other artists - “Redneck Yacht Club,” recorded by Craig Morgan, “Riding with Private Malone” recorded by David Ball, Kyle Park’s “The Night Is Young,” Josh Abbott and Pat Green’s single, “My Texas,” and Kevin Fowler’s “Beer Season.” In total, Thom has had over 10 singles and over 100 songs recorded by artists including Easton Corbin, Pam Tillis, John Anderson, Lorrie Morgan, Colt Ford, Bucky Covington, George Jones, Trailer Choir, Montgomery Gentry, Buddy Jewell, and Cledus T. Judd. Coley McCabe is also no stranger to success in the music business. She is a platinum-selling songwriter and she’s performed numerous times on the Grand Ole Opry. While on RCA Records her song “Grow Young With You” was featured in the Natalie Portman / Ashley Judd film, “Where The Heart Is,” Her writing credits include the award winning group SheDaisy and legendary Loretta Lynn. She also starred in the feature film “Alabama Love Story.” During this interview with Thom and Coley we visit about the dynamics of working as a husband and wife duo in the music business while maintaining a great marriage. As is heard in the interview, we find out that it’s important for each person in the relationship to understand when to ride “Shotgun” to the other person, and when to be the driver. Fittingly enough, Thom and Coley’s latest record is aptly titled “Shotgun” and can be picked up at www.thomandcoley.com . Thom and Coley have also found a bit of a niche within the “Trop Rock” genre which Thom describes loosely as “people who like Jimmy Buffett songs.” The duo is now often found on show billings in tropical places with lots of sun and water! They’ve even brought a little bit of this genre back to Texas by creating and hosting the annual “Lone Star Luau” in Marble Falls, TX (http://lonestarluau.com/). Lonestar Luau 4 will be happening in February of 2020. Click on the link to learn more about it and to secure tickets! While we didn’t get a chance to visit about it in depth in the interview, I would highly suggest that for those interested in songwriting and stories behind hit songs, to follow Thom Shepherd on YouTube. He’s producing a series of YouTube videos called “Story Behind the Song” in which he interviews writers of specific hit songs and learns how the songs came to be. The icing on the top of the videos, at least for me, is to hear the songwriter perform the hit with nothing more than an acoustic guitar. Simply great stuff in my opinion! Check it out Thom’s YouTube page by clicking HERE. Listen via: The Troubadour Podcast Website Apple Podcasts Google Play Spotify Stitcher Podbean
