What if your Big Bend trip started with stillness? We kick off a West Texas series by dropping into Marathon, a tiny town that appears like a mirage after miles of open desert—and turns out to be the smartest basecamp for exploring Big Bend National Park. With guest insights from Samuel, guest services manager at the Gage Resort and Spa, we unpack how a 1927 hotel became an oasis of warm wood, courtyards, and gardens where the noise of the world finally lets go.gagehotel.com We trace the property's roots from Alfred Gage's original build to JP Bryan's restoration and careful expansion, including Los Portales rooms, casitas, and the historic Captain Shepherd House. Samuel walks us through the event-ready Gage Gardens, where desert chic meets rose-lined paths, and explains why weddings here feel close-knit and unhurried. Need recovery after a canyon day? The spa delivers massages, facials, an outdoor hydrotherapy pool, steam room, and an infrared sauna, with a full gym included for guests.Food lovers get plenty to savor. The White Buffalo Bar pairs a legendary mount with a standout prickly pear margarita. 12 Gage serves contemporary American with West Texas flair, while Ghost Fire Pizza fires sourdough pies in a Napoli oven, and Brick Vault Brewery and Barbecue brings weekend smoke and house beer. Mornings belong to V6 Coffee for roastery-fresh drinks, hearty breakfasts, and boxed lunches for the park—because inside Big Bend, options are limited. We share practical trip planning: why Marathon's 45-minute run to the park entrance is a fair trade for comfort and culture, how to structure a two to three day stay, and where to fly (Midland–Odessa commercially, with private options nearby). Along the way, expect stories of quiet balconies, birds in old trees, and the kind of community warmth that makes you think, I could live here. If West Texas has been on your list—or if it's never crossed your mind—this guide will make you see the desert differently.Enjoyed the story and the tips? Follow, share with a friend who needs a desert reset, and leave a quick review so others can find their way to Marathon and Big Bend. Please support our show by shopping through Eagle Creek: https://alnk.to/gVNDI6N and/or feel free to donate to:http://paypal.me/TheROAMies And it means the world to us when you subscribe, rate and share our podcast. Dr. Jamey Jacob is Executive Director of the Oklahoma Aerospace Institute for Research and Education and the Williams Chair in Energy Technology at Oklahoma State University. Under his leadership, OSU launched the Counter-UAS Center of Excellence, now the nation's central hub for coordinated research, development, testing and evaluation of counter-drone systems. Working closely with the Joint Force CUAS University at Fort Sill, the center assesses vendor technologies, establishes performance standards and accelerates next-generation defenses—all while addressing the growing national shortage of highly trained engineers in this mission-critical domain. With unique testing environments and deep alignment with military needs, OSU plays a pivotal role in strengthening national security and maintaining U.S. leadership in UAS innovation. Beyond directing the Center, Dr. Jacob is a Regents Professor of Aerospace Engineering and a nationally recognized leader in emerging aerospace systems, securing nearly $50 million in research funding from federal agencies and industry partners. He has testified before Congress on the critical need for sustained investment in drone research and advanced air mobility, and he leads major initiatives including the EDA-funded LaunchPad and UAS Flight Corridor, NASA's WINDMAP weather program, OSU's work within the Tulsa Hub for Ethical and Trustworthy Autonomy, and the NIST initiative developing certification standards for next-generation aircraft. A native Oklahoman, he holds degrees from the University of Oklahoma and UC Berkeley, and is an FAA Part 107 pilot with roughly 500 flight hours. In this episode of the Drone Radio Show, Dr. Jacob talks about OSU's efforts to advance the nation's counter-UAS capabilities; what Ukraine's drone innovations reveal about the future of warfare, and how OSU's research in atmospheric science, public safety, and wildlife applications is shaping the next generation of drone operations.

Send us a textJabari K. Smith grew up believing sport would be his ticket out. He had the talent, the drive, and the stats to back it up. But when the NFL didn't come calling, he was forced to reckon with something much harder: the silence after the final game.In this episode, Jabari shares his extraordinary journey from gang-affected childhood, to a life-changing boarding school, to a college football career at Texas Tech, and eventually, to arena football and entrepreneurship. But the real story begins after the sport ended, when he drove 26 hours home in silence, wondering what it was all for. What followed was a powerful reinvention. Jabari returned to education, earned a master's degree, launched multiple businesses, wrote two books, and founded Athlete Mindset Reset, a platform helping student-athletes build a future beyond the field. This is an unfiltered look at identity, purpose, and how athletes can learn to own their story, not just their stats. What You'll Hear:How sport helped Jabari break free from gang life and academic setbacksWhy his first real taste of belonging came through basketball at 13The reality of junior college football and the pressure to adapt fastHis honest reckoning with falling short of the NFL dreamWhat it felt like to drive 26 hours in silence after playing his final gameWhy getting his master's degree became a spiritual turning pointHow he turned his pain into purpose with Athlete Mindset ResetThe biggest mistake athletes make and what he wishes he knew in collegeHow he's using board games, books, and mentorship to prepare the next generationGolden Nugget“The biggest mistake I made in college? Not calling up a CEO and saying, ‘I'm Jabari Smith, number 34 for Texas Tech. Can I take you to lunch?' You'd be surprised how many would have said yes. But I waited, and by the time I was ready, they had moved on to the next guy.”This episode is for every athlete who's wondering what happens after. It's for the ones still grinding, still hoping, still tied to the dream, and for the ones who've already walked away and are trying to figure out what's next.Jabari's story is a reminder that your value doesn't end when the jersey comes off. 1. Apollo 1 and Soyuz 1 Disasters: Rushing the Space Race. Bob Zimmerman discusses the major setbacks suffered by both nations in 1967. In January, the Apollo 1 fire occurred during a launchpad rehearsal, killing astronauts Grissom, White, and Chaffee. The cause was carelessness: a spark ignited flammable materials in the pure oxygen atmosphere, trapping the crew because the hatch could only be opened externally. Frank Borman led the honest investigation, which resulted in major safety fixes, including a quick-opening hatch and nonflammable materials. Concurrently, in April 1967, the Soviet program suffered a disaster when cosmonaut Komarov died during the descent of Soyuz 1 after his parachute lines tangled. Both nations realized they had been rushing. The Russians, however, adopted a conservative rule: no manned mission would proceed unless an unmanned test was 100% successful, a standard the Zond missions failed to meet, giving the Americans a decisive edge for Apollo 8.

I don't like to play favorites, but according to the data, one of our most-watched student stories of all time was with Adele and her now-husband Jake (you can watch that original episode right here). The two of them were super kind enough to share what it was like shifting from a completely unrelated job into copywriting—and supporting a loved one during that transition. My favorite part about that episode was that Jake thought the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy was a scam, but once he saw Adele in action bought her a new laptop. Well, that conversation was nearly four years ago (I know, I don't understand time). So, while we've seen Adele since then, it was long overdue for a podcast catch up. You can hear our most conversation on this week's episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast. If you're wondering where copywriting can take you or how you evolve your career as your goals change, Adele's got so much great advice to share. Plus, she's telling us where she's taking her business next, and we couldn't be more excited for her!!! (Yes, she's taking a three-exclamation-marks-worthy next step.) --------------------- Mentioned in the Episode Changing Careers to Become a Copywriter – Adele's Story Related Links What Software Do You Need to Run Your Copywriting Business?Ep. 241: ChatGPT: Friend or Foe? – with Amber Smith --------------- Get Free Copywriting Training here

What if the setback you're cursing right now is the exact detour you needed? In this episode of Architecting, I flip the script on failure. When the universe pulls the rug out, it's not rejection—it's redirection. Learn how to take the opportunity to rebrand, define success on your own terms, and stop tolerating what never served you. This is your permission slip to rethink what you've been settling for and reclaim your career as something that actually fits. What you thought you wanted might not be aligned with your actually purpose, which may be what's blocking you from making the moves that would bring it in. Look for the "something better." Sometimes we need the experience of what we don't like or want to better understand what we do. Look for hidden takeaways from setbacks such as soft skills gained, or experience in areas that might seem like they are tangential to your main job. Look retrospectively for how these things differentiate you in a way that showcases your authentic self. Your next opportunity shouldn't be a “bounce back” but a bold pivot forward
Sandro, founder of KWARKX, shares how his team is bringing utility-scale solar to chain via NFT membership passes that let anyone participate in project returns—without the usual high minimums. We cover: why Cardano (sustainability, security, decentralization), what on-chain access actually looks like (claimable pools, 10-year participation), and the nuts & bolts of real projects (e.g., a 51 MW Netherlands solar park with 20 MW battery storage powering ~35,000 homes). Episode OverviewSometimes the most remarkable leaders don't arrive at the top by climbing a neatly planned ladder, they stumble, pivot, and rebuild along winding roads. In this deeply personal and unexpectedly funny episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times, host Chris Schembra welcomes Julie Peck, a transformative CEO whose story proves that a “curvy path” is not a flaw, it's a strength.Julie's life didn't begin with obvious momentum. She grew up in a household that didn't talk about feelings, in the shadow of a brilliant but stoic father and amid early self-doubt that left her with little sense of self-worth. By her twenties, she found herself adrift, unhappy, financially unstable, stuck in unfulfilling relationships, and ultimately failing out of college. She ended up living in a crumbling apartment above a record store, sleeping on a mattress she salvaged from a frat house dumpster. From the outside, it looked like failure; from the inside, it felt like rock bottom. But Julie didn't stay there. In this conversation, she shares the turning points that changed her trajectory: discovering the courage to face old wounds through therapy and 12-step recovery, deciding to rebuild her education while working full-time, and learning to measure her worth by more than just professional success. Along the way, she tapped into something profound, the ability to take one small action forward even when the long-term plan is unclear. That perseverance reshaped her career. Julie went from customer service to HR innovator to creative director, learning to package her “pile of skills and behaviors” into new opportunities. She took smart risks, like organizing a union drive not to win but to force leadership to listen — and watched those risks lead to promotions and purpose. Ultimately, she rose into C-suite leadership and CEO roles, scaling tech companies, driving triple-digit growth, and building cultures where people thrive. But she never forgot the messy middle or the tools that helped her climb out.Together, Chris and Julie go far beyond résumés and revenue. They unpack what resilience really looks like: the gritty inner work of building self-worth when no one hands it to you, the power of visualizing a future even if you don't know how to get there, and the discipline of balancing the things you must do, should do, and want to do. They talk about how gratitude rewires imposter syndrome, how thanking those who invest in you is a way of saying, “I believe your belief in me.” They explore why everyone — even highly accomplished leaders — is “winging it” every day, and why that's not weakness but reality. For anyone navigating uncertainty, Julie's journey is a masterclass in turning pain into purpose and mistakes into momentum. It's a reminder that your story doesn't have to be perfect to be powerful, in fact, the curve is where character is forged. This episode is a warm invitation to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what matters: your own worth, the people who've lifted you along the way, and the belief that no setback is final. Whether you're rebuilding after a career stumble, leading through change, or simply searching for hope in a hard season, Julie's voice will feel like a steady hand on your shoulder.Stay tuned for part two, where Chris and Julie will dive deeper into leadership in the age of AI, the behaviors that outlast fast-changing technical skills, and how curiosity and gratitude shape the future of work.10 Standout Quotes“I had to organically discover my own self-worth. That's been a 35-year journey, and I'm not done.” — Julie Peck “Everybody is unqualified for whatever is going to come on this day because they've never had this day before. We're all winging it.” — Julie Peck “Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, even in the hardest seasons, you're good at something. Start there.” — Julie Peck “Imposter syndrome is basically telling the people who invested in you: ‘I don't trust your judgment.' Gratitude flips that script.” — Chris Schembra “The impediment to action advances action; what stands in the way becomes the way.” — Marcus Aurelius (quoted by Chris) “Progress comes from movement, not perfection. Just take one small step forward.” — Chris Schembra “The curvy path is a gift, because every detour teaches you something you'll need later.” — Julie Peck “Skills expire faster than ever; behaviors like curiosity, resilience, and asking better questions endure.” — Chris Schembra “Boundaries are self-worth in action. Saying no is a complete sentence.” — Julie Peck “Connection is the opposite of feeling alone in the world, and it's built one honest conversation at a time.” — Julie Peck 10 Key TakeawaysThe “Curvy Path” Is Normal: Career and life rarely follow a straight line; detours and setbacks are often where resilience is forged. Self-Worth Can Be Built: Therapy, reflection, and courageous action help rewire old narratives of “not enough.” Everyone Feels Like an Imposter: High achievers quietly doubt themselves — knowing this is freeing and normalizing. Gratitude Combats Self-Doubt: Thanking those who invest in you reframes fear and reinforces your value. Skills Fade — Behaviors Last: Curiosity, learning agility, and empathy outlast technical know-how in an AI-driven workplace. Visualize the Long Game: Thinking 15–20 years ahead helps shape better short-term decisions and career pivots. Boundaries Are Essential: Healthy limits protect time, energy, and self-worth, enabling sustainable success. Use Work as a Launchpad, Not an Escape: Achievements can build confidence but shouldn't mask personal growth gaps. Take Brave Micro-Steps: Big change starts with one small action; movement matters more than perfection. Connection Breaks Isolation: Vulnerable storytelling, mentorship, and shared humanity turn loneliness into belonging.
Leveling Up: Creating Everything From Nothing with Natalie Jill
What if you are able to craft the exact vision of what you want for your life, despite any obstacles? While most women over 50 are told to slow down and settle for "good enough," Allison Maslan built multiple eight-figure businesses, learned trapeze, and manifested two dream houses, all after turning 50. As the CEO of Pinnacle Global Network, she works with seven and eight-figure entrepreneurs who seem successful on paper but feel completely stuck. In this conversation, Allison reveals the daily 5-minute practice that she credits with transforming not just her business results, but her entire life. This isn't about positive thinking or vision boards—it's a systematic approach to what she calls "deliberate creation" that combines practical strategy with energetic alignment. You'll discover why she tells her accounting team they're "not allowed" to speak about cash flow problems, how she manifested a property in Mexico that was supposedly "not for sale," and the exact morning routine she uses to stay aligned with her biggest vision even when circumstances suggest otherwise. Whether you're building a business, wanting to transform your health, or simply ready to stop playing small in midlife, this conversation will shift how you think about what's possible for your future.
