Thank you for joining us for another episode of the Low Carb MD Podcast. Dr. Mary Bowden is an otolaryngologist and sleep medicine specialist in Houston, Texas, who treated over 6,000 COVID patients during the pandemic. Her vast experience prompted her to become a fierce advocate for early treatment. After the FDA spread misinformation about ivermectin, she and Drs. Paul Marik and Robert Apter successfully sued them, forcing the agency to delete several misleading social media posts and web pages. Houston was ground zero for the COVID-19 shot mandates, and Dr. Bowden was an early outspoken critic. The first hospital in the country to implement mandates, Houston Methodist, suspended her privileges and reported her to the Texas Medical Board in response to her tweeting, “Vaccine mandates are wrong.” The ensuing attacks prompted her to fight back, and she founded a nonprofit, Americans for Health Freedom, whose foundational project is to enlist politicians and other doctors to call for the COVID shots to be pulled off the market. In this episode, Drs. Brian, Tro, and Mary talk about… (00:00) Intro (03:23) The governmental attack on effective, affordable treatments for Covid during the vaccine rollout (11:23) The data supporting the usage of Ivermectin as a safe and effective treatment for Covid (13:47) The lawsuit filed by Dr. Bowden and other doctors against the FDA for interfering with their ability to practice medicine by overstepping their authority and violating the Administrative Procedure Act (17:42) Why Dr. Bowden decided she had to sue the FDA (27:02) Medical ethics, speaking out for the truth, and standing up to corruption (35:59) The quality of research for the safety of various vaccines and why we need a higher standard (41:59) The suppression of effective early treatment options and the massive promotion of vaccines (48:15) How Drs. Bowden and Lenzkes would have respectively handled the Covid situation if they had the opportunity to run the NIH in 2020-2021 (55:23) Dr. Bowden's recent interest in the carnivore diet (01:01:39) Dr. Bowden's, Dr. Tro's, and Dr. Brian's advice for medical students and the next generation of doctors (01:09:28) R.F.K. and Jay Bhattacharya (01:13:51) Outro For more information, please see the links below. While most assume leaving traditional practice means seeing fewer patients and making less money, Dr. Lenzkes revealed he was able to pay back all his loans in the first year of his new practice model - demonstrating that patient-centered care can be financially viable while improving doctor satisfaction and patient outcomes.EPISODE SUMMARYDr. Brian Lenzkes shares his journey from a traditional insurance-based medical practice to a direct primary care model, highlighting the fundamental problems in today's healthcare system. In his previous practice, he struggled to provide quality care while seeing 20-22 patients daily, dealing with endless paperwork, and fighting insurance companies. The breaking point came when he realized the system rewarded sicker patients rather than preventing illness. Now practicing direct primary care, he sees 6-10 patients daily, spending quality time with each one and focusing on metabolic health and prevention. The transition required courage and initially meant a pay cut, but resulted in better patient care, improved work-life balance, and professional satisfaction. Dr. Lenzkes explains how direct primary care reduces costs for patients while allowing doctors to practice medicine the way they envisioned. The conversation reveals how the traditional medical system contributes to physician burnout and high suicide rates, while alternative models like direct primary care offer hope for both doctors and patients.NOTABLE QUOTE"If someone gets diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and the doctor hasn't warned them at least 5 times, the doctor is committing malpractice. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Brian Lenzkes. He is an internal medicine doctor based in San Diego who has focused much of his attention on clinical nutrition. He owned his own medical practice with a group of physicians from 2004-2020. Dr. Lenzkes is co-host of the popular LowCarbMD podcast, which has more than 1.4 million downloads, and is a professional speaker. Dr. Lenzkes attended UC Irvine and received a Bachelor of Science in Biology before attending the University of Southern California Medical School. After graduating in 1999, he started his Residency Program at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego. He extended his residency for a year to serve as Chief Resident before starting his private practice career at Internal Medicine Associates in 2004. Dr. Lenzkes has been voted one of the "Top Doctors" in San Diego for 11 years. Even after gaining the medical community's and his patients' respect, Dr. Lenzkes felt a void as many patients with chronic conditions became sick and required more medications. At the same time, Dr. Lenzkes battled his own weight gain while following 'standard medical advice.' In this episode, Dr. Lenzkes first reveals how he learned about a fasting and low-carb lifestyle. After trying it himself, Dr. Lenzkes lost the weight he gained while following 'standard medical advice.' Dr. Lenzkes dives deep into the correlation between high insulin levels and cardiovascular disease. If you haven't already, now is the time to check your insulin levels. [01:10] Learning About Fasting and Low-Carb In The Medical Community Throwing drugs at people with diabetes, hypertension, and obesity doesn't do anything. One patient found fasting successful, and Dr. Lenzkes decided to research the lifestyle. After losing weight with fasting and low-carb, Dr. Lenzkes was hesitant to share this new information with his patients. Dr. Lenzkes got a lot of backlash from his colleagues. However, Dr. Lenzkes gets patients off insulin; not many people can say that. [13:30] The Correlation Between High Insulin Levels and Cardiovascular Disease There's a massive correlation between high insulin levels and cardiovascular disease. Nearly 100% of Dr. Lenzkes's patients have never had an insulin check until seeing him. You don't just wake up with type two diabetes; you have ten years to predict that diabetes is coming before you get it. Lower your insulin levels; that way, you won't need as much insulin to get the desired effect. Dr. Lenzkes highly recommends checking out Dr. Jason Fung's work. Find it here: https://www.thefastingmethod.com/. [19:40] How Exercise and Movement Will Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes Most diabetics, if you look at their lab work untreated, they're going to have high triglycerides in that 300 to 500 range. LDL can be increased or low; it doesn't matter. HDL will be low. When you get HDL right and the triglycerides come down, you feel a lot better. Exercise and stress management is essential because it helps burn sugar and your fat reserves. When you run out of reserves, you have diabetes because the sugar stays in your bloodstream. [31:50] The Reason Doctors Don't Talk About Diet and Lifestyle During A Visit Dr. Lenzkes uses a company called Ulta Lab Tests: https://www.ultalabtests.com/. Patients can order Ulta, or your doctor can get it for less. Doctors have been trained a certain way, so they may not want to test for insulin. Plus, doctors are pressed for time and are judged based on how many patients they see each day. Many doctors only see a patient for nine minutes. It is impossible to talk about diet and lifestyle during these visits. [36:10] Many Doctors Don't See The Truth; Instead, They Stick With What They Learned In Medical Schools Doctors are taught that you need three meals daily, and breakfast is the day's most important meal. However, that's simply not the case. Doctors stick with what they learn no matter what evidence says otherwise. Many doctors will see high blood pressure and tell people to cut salt. Well, salt is high because insulin is high. High insulin causes you to retain sodium in your kidney. The answer should be to lower insulin instead. [42:50] Lower Your Insulin Through Sleep, Exercise, and Stress Management What's more important to lower insulin, sleep or exercise? If you prioritize something, it's sleep. Next, don't be stressed out and angry. Then, eat real food that isn't processed to lower insulin. Regular exercise will also help lower insulin. The more muscle mass you have, the more insulin sensitive you are. Putting muscle mass on is never going to be the wrong answer. The more muscle mass you have, the longer you live. The lower your insulin levels are, the longer you live. [57:30] Chronic Stress Could Be Causing Your Metabolical Sickness Fatty liver disease means you are metabolically sick. When you are metabolically sick, you risk dying from all different types of diseases. The biggest scare we have is high insulin. When you're under chronic stress, it's not good. Think about ways to get your priorities straight through sleep and stress management. AND MUCH MORE! Tune in as we chat about reversing type 2 diabetes, the importance of muscle mass, and the massive problem with chronic stress. One of our most entertaining conversations ever, with the ebullient Low-Carb MD, Brian Lenzkes. We get to hear about the differences between a medical office that depends on insurance for payment and one that doesn't. We learn about a grotesque misalignment of incentives between physicians, insurance companies and patients - who wins, and who loses. Thank you for tuning in for another episode of Life's Best Medicine. Joining the show today is a fellow San Diego doc, Nassir Azimi. Dr. Azimi's list of awards, board certifications, and areas of specialization are vast and would take up too much space here, but, to list a few… he is a Board Certified Interventional Cardiologist, was awarded the national STEMI champion award by Sharp for having the best outcomes involving heart attacks nation-wide, and he is the former chief of biomedical ethics (6 years). When the Soviet-Afghan War began in 1979, Nassir (only a child at the time) was forced to flee with his family to the US. Being raised in the US as an immigrant and a refugee was difficult, but Nassir shares the story of his journey growing up in America, going to medical school, and practicing medicine. In their discussion, Drs. Lenzkes and Azimi discuss religious pluralism, gratitude and making a difference, learning to look past the superficial differences that divide us and choosing to see the similarities, the difficulties of working within the bureaucracy of the medical system, the value of prayer and the benefits that can arise out of considering life from a theocentric perspective, and not allowing accomplishment and success to turn you to pride. Life's Best Medicine according to Dr. Azimi: “I think it is what people told me when I was young: ‘your family is the most important thing, so make time to spend with them.' Your family, your circle of friends; that's what is going to get you through the hardships. Time is not forever, time is a very important commodity—more important than any luxury or commodity we can obtain—so spend more time with your family and don't compare yourself with others. Also, laughter!” Thank you for listening. Have a blessed day and stay healthy! Links: Dr. Nassir Azimi: Twitter Dr. Brian Lenzkes: Website Low Carb MD Podcast
Thank you for tuning in for another episode of Life's Best Medicine. Zuby is an independent rapper, podcast host, author, public speaker and creative entrepreneur, with over 500,000 followers online. He was born in England, raised in Saudi Arabia and is a graduate of Oxford University. He has been featured on The Joe Rogan Experience, BBC, Fox News, Sky News, The Adam Carolla Show, The Rubin Report, The Candace Owens Show and The Ben Shapiro Show, amongst others. In this discussion, Dr. Lenzkes and Zuby talk about having a mindset of trying to spread positivity rather than having the mindset of wanting everyone to like you, the importance of being open and honest with yourself and others, dissenting opinions and beliefs as necessary for learning and growth, how to treat your interlocutors with respect and engage with them constructively, being “merciful to people but ruthless with ideas,” the range of potential consequences that result from a fear of man, and remembering that you probably have much more in common with someone you disagree with than it seems in the moment. Additionally, Zuby shares his thoughts on intellectual honesty and the meaning of faith. Where does science stand in relation to faith? What is the purpose of faith? Thank you for listening. Please enjoy my conversation with Dr. Brian Lenzkes on how he found Low carb lifestyle medicine and how he keeps an open mind to other dietary practices.
Dr. Brian Lenzkes is an internal medicine doctor based in San Diego who has focused much of his attention on clinical nutrition. He has owned his own medical practice with a group of physicians since 2004. Dr. Lenzkes is co-host of the popular Low Carb MD podcast, which has more than 1.4 million downloads, and he is a professional speaker. Dr. Lenzkes attended UC Irvine and received a Bachelors of Science in Biology before attending University of Southern California Medical School. After graduating in 1999, he started his Residency Program at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego and extended his residency for a year to serve as Chief Resident before starting his private practice career at Internal Medicine Associates in 2004. Dr. Lenzkes has been voted one of the “Top Doctors” in San Diego for 11 years. Even after gaining the respect of the medical community and his patients, Dr. Lenzkes felt a void as many patients with chronic conditions became more sick and required more medications. At the same time Dr. Lenzkes battled his own weight gain while following ‘standard medical advice'. His frustration over the inability of standard medical advice to help his patients with obesity and chronic disease, combined with his own weight gain, led him to the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. Dr. Brian Lenzkes, founder of Low Carb Advisor (lowcarbadvisor.com), details the many advantages of a ketogenic diet and lifestyle. From weight loss, alertness, more energy, and a feeling of general well being, Dr. Lenzkes lays out the undeniable benefits and the science behind the diet that Americans are turning to for good health. As an internal medicine doctor in San Diego, Lenzkes has long been interested in clinical nutrition. His physician group has been in operation since 2004, and when he is not practicing medicine he can often be seen at speaking engagements around the country, discussing modern health. Lenzkes received a BS in Biology at UC Irvine. After attending USC Medical School, Lenzkes completed his residency at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego and was named Chief Resident there before launching his private practice at Internal Medicine Associates. Lenzkes discusses his personal struggle with weight gain in spite of following standard medical advice for weight loss. As a physician, Lenzkes was determined to find ways to reduce his patients' reliance on drug companies by working with them on nutrition and a healthier lifestyle in general. Working from personal experience, Dr. Lenzkes was, and is, strongly motivated to bring the ketogenic lifestyle to his own patients who are seeking nutritional advice, as well as to the general public. Lenzkes provides an overview of the connection between fasting and good health. He talks about the many medical problems that he sees regularly as an internal medicine physician, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, fatigue, hypertension and weight gain, and their connection to insulin resistance. He discusses the advantages of cutting out sugars and processed foods and returning to real, wholesome natural foods. The nutritional expert and respected physician describe the innumerable benefits of the ketogenic diet and lifestyle. The diet offers safe and healthy weight loss, control of blood glucose levels, improved brain function, and the potential to literally reverse many chronic health conditions. The keto diet transitions the body into a fat-burning metabolic state called nutritional ketosis. In nutritional ketosis, the body uses few carbohydrates for energy—it begins using ketones that are produced by the liver from the breakdown of fats. It's the process of burning body fat for energy by eating the proper foods. He describes the cycle of hunger and eating, and how it is quite often directly related to higher triglyceride levels. A triglyceride is an ester that is derived from glycerol and three fatty acids. He explains that a ketogenic diet will drop triglyceride levels nearly in half in a surprisingly short amount of time, which will lower hunger and even allow for fasting to be tolerated easier. Lenzkes delivers an analysis of the effects of carbohydrate loading on the body. He talks about the benefits of higher fat, higher protein diets and how they can actually decrease hunger. Additionally, he expounds upon the growing medical problem with the fatty liver, how the body stores fat, and the carbohydrate connection, as well as what medical experts can do to advise patients on nutrition, to combat the problem. He talks about the paradigm shift in medicine that is coming, in regard to nutrition. Lenzkes gives an overview of his ketogenic program and the many options from fasting to carb cutting and beyond. He discusses the challenges people face when they take on a ketogenic lifestyle, and how variations within the diet may be necessary for people to find the best way to their true success. Lenzkes states that experimentation is key, as different foods and plans work better for some than others, but the nutritional benefits will be incredibly rewarding once someone finds the plan that works best for them. He discusses how carbs break down into sugar, and the hidden carbs in many foods that people know to be healthy foods even. He talks about how the key to health and fitness is often unnecessarily overcomplicated when the basic tenets of controlling sugar and carb intake are easier to grasp and adopt than many people realize. He details how a drop in insulin level will, in most cases, immediately begin to improve fatigue, mood, cognition, depression, and so much more. Ultimately, as Dr. Lenzkes states, the power exists within us all to change our nutrition habits and reverse potentially dangerous medical issues and conditions, and it is his personal goal to help everyone take steps toward achieving their best health possible.
