[1:49] Are You Cutting Calories? Start Fasting Instead And See The Benefits! Simply reducing your calorie intake to reduce body fat is a false belief.  If you eat less, you burn less, resulting in energy expenditure going down.  When you take energy in, you can burn or store it. But what you cannot do is take the stored energy out and burn it. If your insulin is high, you can't burn fat. [8:08] Do Other Hormones Besides Insulin Also Help The Body To Retain Fat? Many factors affect your insulin, but the main one is metabolism. Maintain a low level of insulin. The amount of energy is put in or taken out doesn't matter. You cannot burn body fat if your insulin level is maintained at high levels. Fasting is beneficial because it's the most effective way to lower your insulin. Some foods are more fattening than other foods. For example, even though broccoli and cookies have the same calories, cookies are more fattening than broccoli. [18:31] If You Have Damaged Metabolism, Don't Lose Hope, You Can Rebuild Your level of hunger determines how much and how frequently you eat. You are not consciously in charge of that: you can choose not to eat, but you cannot choose to feel less hungry. It's not about willpower, it's about your appetite. It's not about the calories, it's what's behind those calories.  More important: question whether you store or burn the energy that comes to your body. [29:05] The Facts About Type 2 Diabetes and How to Fight It Type 2 diabetes may be controlled, but it leads to heart disease, strokes, and other complications which lead to death. Type 2 diabetes is a straightforward illness to comprehend. Your body has too much sugar and cannot store any more. As a result, it leaks into the blood. When you start measuring it in your blood, you know your sugar storage capacity has been surpassed. And this is going to generate problems. Type 2 diabetes is not a chronic and progressive disease. It is reversible. Changing diet and lifestyle is the step to reverse type 2 diabetes. Older medications such as insulin don't provide organ protection. New medications help to remove sugar from the body, compared to insulin which only moves sugar around. [40:09]  What Fasting Techniques Can Force Insulin Down? Find the balance between efficiency and effectiveness. If you choose something too hard, you won't do it. For starters, you could do a 16-hour fast and a two-meals-a-day plan. From there, you could gradually increase your fasting time from 16 hours to 24 and eventually into 36 hour fast, which is the most effective. Thirty-six hours fast just becomes hard because of social reasons. [53:08] Workout While Fasting: Is It Good Or Bad? Listen Here! Your body will typically decide where it will acquire its energy. Your body stores glycogen, and for most individuals, you'll practically never run out of it. When people participate in activities like marathons, you occasionally witness them depleting their glycogen reserves. Keep in mind that, with the exception of the brain, every tissue in your body may use body fat as an energy source. I am excited to welcome a fellow nurse practitioner, Dr. Stephanie Gray, as my guest for today's show!  Stephanie Gray, DNP, MS, ARNP, AGNP-C, ABAAHP, FAARFM, is a functional medicine provider who helps men and women build sustainable and optimal health and longevity so that they can focus on what matters most to them!   Stephanie helps women in mid-life, who feel like their bodies have betrayed them, step back into their bodies by restoring optimal hormone levels so they can regain their sleep, figure, mood, and feel amazing once again. She is known for keeping hormone replacement therapy sexy, safe, and effective. Stephanie saw a lot of incontinence while doing her graduate training in nursing homes. She realized that urinary incontinence was the primary reason for people being admitted to long-term care facilities. So she learned the art of pessary fitting, and through that, discovered that there were non-surgical and non-pharmacological options for urinary incontinence. Those options helped people regain some dignity and allowed them to stay in their own homes. Stephanie decided that there had to be a similar approach for every other condition, so she sought out the necessary training, became a nurse practitioner, and started a practice of her own. Then, Cynthia worked with cardiology. When Cynthia became a parent, she found her child had eczema. This led Cynthia to learn more about nutrition. [06:40] Why Cynthia Recommends Intermittent Fasting People have been conditioned to believe that they need to eat in the morning. However, our bodies are not designed to be eating all day long. When we are going against convention, we need the confidence to say BS. The cereal companies will benefit when they convince us that we need to eat breakfast garbage. Our bodies are designed to fast, feast, and fast again. Snacking is making us fat. [11:50] How To Stabilize Your Blood Sugar Each meal needs to have protein and healthy fats first. Carbs should be the non-processed variety. We have to stabilize our blood sugar first. Bacon, eggs, and avocado is a great example of fat-filled breakfast. If you are hungry within an hour of eating, your macros are off. Once you get your blood sugar stable, then you can move onto the concept of fasting. If you can’t sleep through the night, then you can’t lose weight. Also, if you are stressed, then you can’t lose weight. If a woman starts losing their period because of a fast, then the fast is too much for their body. [15:30] The Best Benefits of Fasting Mental clarity is Cynthia’s favorite benefit of fasting. She likes to know that she has loads of energy. The improved digestive process is Cynthia’s second favorite benefit. Lastly, the benefits of autophagy are fantastic. People are attracted to fasting because of weight loss; however, they find out that they feel so much better too. [17:20] Why We Need to Focus on Our Inner Work    Inner work is what keeps us sane. We need to be aware of limiting beliefs, our negative thoughts, and where our energy is going. “Our thoughts become our actions.” -Cynthia Thurlow Mindset is the most important thing that we possess. [21:20] How to Build a Mental Six-Pack You need high-quality sleep in a cold, darkroom. Physical activity in the morning is critical. Cynthia enjoys drinking tea – it is beneficial for boosting autophagy. What are you going to do for your brain? Cynthia is always listening to a book or listening to a podcast. Coldwater therapy will also assist with your mental six-pack. [25:20] How to Build Confidence Building confidence requires being in tune with your passions. Take time each day to be inspired by other people. Creating a plan will help with your confidence. Cynthia says the best investments she has made in her business are the big-ticket ones. Sometimes you just have to leap. I have seen an ever increasing trend of people taking my "balance is key", "as long as it fits your calories" advice far too literally and reverting to fasting as a way to "punish" themselves for the food they ate the day before or after a big social weekend.Fasting as an array of positive health and well-being benefits and it is these that you should focus on when looking to include fasting or the no breakfast life as part of your day to day life. He then went to Atlanta Georgia to take a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and LifeWest in California to take his Chiropractic degree. He eventually influenced his daughter to be a chiropractor too by bringing her in chiropractic seminars. Growing up, he and his siblings were raised in a healthy environment. They grew up attending college seminars as family vacations and did not use medications often.   [7:12] Dr. Clum’s life as a chiropractor in Costa Rica He gives credit to Shawn Dill who authored the law that regulates the practice of chiropractic in Costa Rica. He lived eight years in Costa Rica working with universities and olympic athletes mostly.   [10:59] Dr. Clum’s story of getting into his passion for Diabetes It started back when he was diagnosed with skin cancer back in Costa Rica. With his background in nutrition, he studied more about diet and lifestyle. He was able to heal himself with a change of diet and lifestyle. After 10 years, realizing the problem in obesity and diabetes, he opened a Wellness Center in Spain providing different programs such as weight loss, fast fitness, and metabolic syndrome programs. [14:54] Introducing his model in the medical world Dr. Warren White, an owner of a Population Health Company, partnered with him to provide his services in a larger scope of population. He had to study and research diabetes holistically to back up his own diabetes prevention program as it completely opposed the ADA Diabetes Guidelines. He fought for the recognition that the insulin-based model is the more effective approach in diabetes.   [20:31] ADA’s Diabetes Prevention Program vs. Dr. Clum’s Insulin-based Model ADA’s is a traditional model and focuses on regulating blood sugar. It is based on low fat, low calorie, small frequent meals and snacks, increasing physical activity and medication. A study showed that it does not prevent diabetes, but only postpones it. Dr. Clum’s program focuses on controlling the root cause of diabetes, the insulin. Insulin sensitivity decreases symptoms of Type II Diabetes. It also promotes weight loss – visceral and non-visceral, which is vital in treating diabetes.   [26:39] Diabetes is not irreversible, degenerative disease. Diabetes is seen in the medical world as irreversible degenerative disease and requires life-long management of blood sugar. The traditional approach treats the symptoms, but if you shift in the insulin-based model, the opportunity to reverse diabetes is possible.   [28:12] The major role of hormone Insulin in Weight loss and Diabetes According to Dr. Clum, “Weight loss in itself is pointless.” In order to treat Type II diabetes, the diabetic patient needs to lose only 1 gram of fat out of the pancreas. It resets the metabolic mechanism of the pancreas. It’s not the caloric intake; it’s the insulin that plays in weight management Since 60’s and 70’s, there are a lot of studies about weight management that revolves in the law of thermodynamics or “calories in = calories out”. However, they are not effective for everyone. It is random and never predictable. Insulin-based program in treating diabetes is more complex than calories in = calories out  Patients who already tried the traditional way of managing diabetes were advised to eat more rather than eating less to get their metabolism to a certain point before the fasting.   [36:30] The concept of fed and lean state In a constant fed state, the insulin is up all the time. Eating is any time our body consumes calories. An average American is in a constant fed state, eating about 17-23 times a day. When you fast, your body becomes in a lean state. When you fast, your body starts to repair damaged cells in your body. Damaged cells are getting rid of or reused as energy.   [41:15] Dr. Clum’s 30-day of fasting His fasting started from 3 days and gradually progressed into 30 days. He did not experience hunger and cravings. He experienced fat and muscle loss, losing about 20 pounds.   [44:30] Negative connotations in fasting – muscle wasting and not getting through it There’s no need to be afraid of muscle wasting as muscle comes back and recovers, as seen in athletes as well. The goal of fasting is not to just get through it, but to have the ability to do it. If you train and prepare physically and mentally, you can do it.   [47:48] How much of an impact has eating high healthy fat, low carb diet been for his patients, especially diabetic patients? Keto diet is commonly used to control snacking. He has seen keto diet to be effective in losing 60 pounds in 8 weeks. Healthy liver and pancreas is vital in order to get the health benefits of the keto diet.   [51:48] Skin as a metabolic organ The skin makes 50% of men’s testosterone. In women, it makes up 75% of their estrogen and in menopause, it makes 100% Your skin has a huge role in cancer and insulin resistance.   [53:15] Vitamin D can be an indicator in detecting insulin resistance. This is by far the MOST asked question I get in the DM’s of my instagram account and so I thought it is about time I made a podcast that will go into detail about what breaks your fast and what does not break your fast.As the name would suggest, “break-fast” is when you are going from a fasted state to a fed state. While that might seem very straight forward, it can be confusing as to what actually breaks your fast. Who would have thought?  Anyone can follow the Fat Guy's exploits on Twitter.  Food journals are great ways to lose weight and the Fat Guy is always trying anything in order to lose those last 20 pounds. So take a peek into his food diary. You never know what he'll write. Somehow he can stay compliant to writing on Twitter but he can't fit in exercise each day. That's right, moments after he eats something the Fat Guy used to Twitter about it and you can follow him so that one day if you try real hard you too can look like the Fat Guy. So now a new Wellness Minute runs on that station each morning at around 7:40. Each Wellness Minute features the doctor and I going over 5 of his best tips on a given wellness subject like: losing weight, getting in shape, living a healthy lifestyle, etc. Now these Wellness Minutes are available online.  If you have a favorite radio station that you think would benefit from our Wellness Minutes send them an email telling them about it and who knows maybe you can hear us everyday too. Also once again, I need you to please do me a favor. My kid Max has been doing a radio show called "Kid Power Radio" for awhile now and you should check it out. It is kind of like a kids version of TMZ or Entertainment Tonight mixed in with a little Wayne's World. Max recaps the week in entertainment and gives his take and review of what he liked and didn't like on TV, at the movies, video games, in books and in music and even restaurant reviews. He had a big show recently he interviewed Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, someone from Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus and even Miranda Cosgrove star of Nickelodeon's Hit TV Show iCarly.
