At the peak of respiratory virus season, bronchiolitis is one of the most common presentations in infants and young toddlers. The characteristic wheeze and prolonged duration of illness can be distressing for parents, who may lack the practical knowledge of how to effectively implement supportive care. When the mainstay of treatment is supportive care without any single curative intervention, you need to be able to discuss the etiology, management, and anticipatory guidance on a level that the parents can understand. This episode introduces the idea of capacity-building family-centered care and takes a granular, detailed approach to improving family understanding and home care education so that you can facilitate better evidence-based care in the unrestricted environment of the home. By arming parents with the knowledge and skills needed to care for their infant at home and the clear, objective return criteria, you're providing family-centered care and reducing unnecessary visits.    Instagram: @thepedsnppodcast Show notes and references thepedsnp.com Disclaimer   References Justice NA, Le JK. The American space agency NASA's human-like robot Valkyrie looks powerful. It stands 188 centimeters tall and weighs 136 kilograms. Valkyrie is named after supernatural females in Norse mythology. The robot is being tested at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The robot is designed to operate in "...damaged human-engineered environments," like areas hit by natural disasters, NASA said. But robots like Valkyrie could also work in space one day. Robots that look like humans, or humanoid robots, have a torso, head, two arms and two legs. Engineers believe that humanoid robots will be able to work similarly to humans and use the same tools and equipment. They just need the right software. NASA Dexterous Robotics team leader Shaun Azimi said humanoid robots in space could do dangerous jobs. Such jobs include cleaning solar panels or dealing with equipment outside the spacecraft. As a result, human astronauts could pay more attention to exploration and discovery. "We're not trying to replace human crews, we're really just trying to take the dull, dirty and dangerous work off their plates to allow them to focus on those higher-level activities," Azimi said. NASA is partnering with robotics companies like Apptronik, which is based in Austin, Texas. The goal is to learn how humanoid robots developed for purposes on Earth could help the development of future humanoid robots meant for space. Apptronik is developing Apollo, a humanoid robot whose jobs on Earth will include working in warehouses and manufacturing plants. The robot can move packages and organize objects. Apptronik plans to start providing the humanoid robots to companies in early 2025.Apptronik Apptronik Chief Technology Officer Nick Paine said Apollo has strengths in comparison to humans. "We're targeting having this system online 22 hours a day," Paine said. "This does have a swappable battery, so you can work for four hours, swap the battery and then keep going.” “我们的目标是让这个系统每天 22 小时在线,”潘恩说。 “它确实有一个可更换电池,所以你可以工作四个小时,更换电池然后继续工作。” Apptronik chief Jeff Cardenas said there are many possibilities as new software and development increase Apollo's abilities. Apptronik 首席执行官杰夫·卡德纳斯 (Jeff Cardenas) 表示,随着新软件和开发增强阿波罗的能力,有很多可能性。 "The approach is we're starting in the warehouse and on the manufacturing floor, but then it can move into retail...to delivery and out more into what we call unstructured spaces," Cardenas said. 卡德纳斯说:“我们的方法是从仓库和制造车间开始,然后可以进入零售……交付,并更多地进入我们所说的非结构化空间。” In years to come, those "unstructured" areas could include space, Azimi said. He said the robots are being designed so they can be easily changed to do many different jobs. 阿齐米说,未来几年,这些“非结构化”区域可能包括太空。 他说,这些机器人的设计使得它们可以很容易地改变以完成许多不同的工作。 "Robots like Apollo are designed with modularity in mind to be able to adapt to many applications," Azimi said. “像阿波罗这样的机器人在设计时就考虑到了模块化,能够适应许多应用,”阿齐米说。 Azimi added that NASA is aiming to find out what areas it needs to look into “to bring a terrestrial system into the space environment...” 阿齐米补充说,美国宇航局的目标是找出需要研究哪些领域,“将地面系统带入太空环境……”

Abstract: The lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), a retinotopic relay center where visual inputs from the retina are processed and relayed to the visual cortex, has been proposed as a potential target for artificial vision. At present, it is unknown whether optogenetic LGN stimulation is sufficient to elicit behaviorally relevant percepts and the properties of LGN neural responses relevant for artificial vision have not been thoroughly characterized. Here, we demonstrate that tree shrews pretrained on a visual detection task can detect optogenetic LGN activation using an AAV2-CamKII-ChR2 construct and readily generalize from visual to optogenetic detection. We also characterize how amplitude and frequency of optogenetic stimulation affect behavioral performance. Given the importance of temporal stimulation parameters, we also study tree shrew behavioral ability to discriminate among pairs of visual flicker frequencies and demonstrate performance transfer among related discrimination problems as well as limitations. Neural recordings in LGN and primary visual cortex (V1) examining two flicker discriminations reveal that while LGN neurons multiplex information about temporal stimulation discriminations, V1 neurons explicitly encode information about one or the other discriminations but not both. Our findings confirm the LGN as a potential target for visual prosthetics and introduce a distinction in stimulus encoding between thalamic and cortical representations that could be of fundamental importance in artificial vision. Ep. 22: How Students with Dyslexia Can Develop the Skills Needed for Reading with Forough Azimi

Diverse Thinking Different Learning

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 23, 2021 40:41

Today we get the opportunity to continue the conversation from last week's episode on dyslexia. We've talked about what dyslexia is and the common myths surrounding the language-based disorder. But now, how can we help students who have been diagnosed? Because of our guest today on the Diverse Thinking · Different Learning, we can move forward in learning about ways to support these students.   Today's guest is Forough Azimi. Forough is the Center Director for Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes at the Westwood office in Southern California and has been working for the organization for about 10 years. Starting out in what she thought would be a temporary position, Forough has found her passion in supporting students with dyslexia and their families through direct, differentiated, and intense instruction, all of which she describes in this episode.   It is important to note that physician and scientist, Dr. Sally Shaywitz, whose research studies have provided the framework and details for our understanding of dyslexia says that there is a need for a community that disseminates 21st-century knowledge to educators, policymakers, and the parents of dyslexic children. We want to be part of that community, which is why we are continuing the discussion about dyslexia and how to address the challenges that 20% of students face.   Show Notes: [2:22] - Starting off the conversation about dyslexia, Dr. Wilson reminds us of the previous episode's discussion on the myths of dyslexia and what it truly is. [3:29] - Because dyslexia is a spectrum, Forough explains that no two students with dyslexia are the same. She gives examples of what some of the struggles may be. [4:34] - After receiving a diagnosis, Forough says that it is important to be able to pinpoint a student's abilities and how dyslexia manifests for that student. [5:28] - Forough describes a scenario to demonstrate how a weakness in decoding can lead to difficulty in comprehension and how they feed on each other. [7:42] - Students who don't self-correct while they read - it will impact their visualization of the text. This also impacts vocabulary for many students. [8:49] - Karen lists the components of reading to illustrate how complex reading really is. [9:11] - Forough explains how she shares information about dyslexia with parents to break down the complexity of reading and the student's area of weakness. [10:08] - There is not a one-size-fits-all intervention for students with dyslexia. The struggle could be in a multitude of areas and vary per child. [11:39] - In regards to interventions, there are so many programs out there to help, but Dr. Wilson points out that you need to go with the program that has the most evidence. [12:32] - We have to do research to see if a specific program and a specific method of intervention actually makes changes.  [13:31] - At Lindamood-Bell, their research is centered around retention of skills and strategies and they look deeply at their intensive model of instruction. [14:11] - Forough describes the study of the neurological change that is made after a student's intensive model of instruction with Lindamood-Bell programs. [16:07] - When Forough is able to provide that research to parents, it provides so much hope for improvement in reading. [17:17] - Using sight word reading as an example, Forough describes how she looks for underlying problems with the component skills in reading. [18:03] - Once she knows what is the most difficult for the student, she knows what to target with the programs at Lindamood-Bell. [18:33] - Forough describes a few of the programs used at Lindamood-Bell and what problem they address. [20:04] - Many parents who get a diagnosis for their child later in their schooling may feel like things are too late. But Karen and Forough clear up that it can get better. [21:00] - It doesn't matter how old a student is, direct and differentiated instruction is impactful. [23:42] - Karen and Forough discuss writing and dysgraphia and how Lindamood-Bell supports students who have difficulty.  [25:31] - The intensity of instruction is key. Changes can't be made in just one day a week. At Lindamood-Bell, they create a schedule for students and most are working with them 5 days a week for several hours. [26:46] - There is some sort of learning loss every summer. Because of this unusual school year with the COVID-19 pandemic, learning loss may be higher for some students. [27:22] - It is very motivating for students to have difficulty with something on Monday and notice the changes and progress by Friday because of intense instruction. [28:51] - Lindamood-Bell has the luxury of one-on-one instruction. Schools also work well with the program and collaborate well. [30:18] - There are so many barriers for parents getting their child access to evidence-based intervention. [31:35] - There are a lot of programs available and it can seem overwhelming.  [32:53] - Forough describes the results of targeted instruction and how amazing the progress is. [33:39] - More and more school districts are starting to pay for the Lindamood-Bell programs. [34:53] - It makes more sense to spend a summer doing intense instruction than to do a small amount each week over the span of years. [35:57] - The ultimate goal for Lindamood-Bell is to unlock a student's love of reading. [37:01] - Forough shares a story of a student who is now graduating from college and the renewed sense of confidence she has. About Our Guest: Forough Azimi has a B.S. in Psychology from the Georgia Institute of Technology and has been working with Lindamood-Bell (LMB) for just under 10 years. She has worked in LMB Learning Centers in Georgia, New York, Singapore, and now Los Angeles. She has also worked with the LMB School Partnerships division to help implement programs in small groups and train teachers in how to use their programs in a classroom setting. She has been the Center Director of the Westwood Learning Center since March 2020. Thank you for tuning in for another episode of Life's Best Medicine. Joining the show today is a fellow San Diego doc, Nassir Azimi. Dr. Azimi's list of awards, board certifications, and areas of specialization are vast and would take up too much space here, but, to list a few… he is a Board Certified Interventional Cardiologist, was awarded the national STEMI champion award by Sharp for having the best outcomes involving heart attacks nation-wide, and he is the former chief of biomedical ethics (6 years). When the Soviet-Afghan War began in 1979, Nassir (only a child at the time) was forced to flee with his family to the US. Being raised in the US as an immigrant and a refugee was difficult, but Nassir shares the story of his journey growing up in America, going to medical school, and practicing medicine. In their discussion, Drs. Lenzkes and Azimi discuss religious pluralism, gratitude and making a difference, learning to look past the superficial differences that divide us and choosing to see the similarities, the difficulties of working within the bureaucracy of the medical system, the value of prayer and the benefits that can arise out of considering life from a theocentric perspective, and not allowing accomplishment and success to turn you to pride. Life's Best Medicine according to Dr. Azimi: “I think it is what people told me when I was young: ‘your family is the most important thing, so make time to spend with them.' Your family, your circle of friends; that's what is going to get you through the hardships. Time is not forever, time is a very important commodity—more important than any luxury or commodity we can obtain—so spend more time with your family and don't compare yourself with others. Also, laughter!” Thank you for listening. Have a blessed day and stay healthy!   Links:   Dr. Nassir Azimi: Twitter   Dr. Brian Lenzkes:  Website Low Carb MD Podcast

She further tells us about the forms of hate speech that influenced her to move away from the toxicity that she discovered in her community. A survivor's voice should not be drowned out by a volume of hate speech directed towards them. We should not allow our rage to make us forget that their pain requires attention and that their wounds need healing.

A former Young Australian of the Year, my dear friend Akram Azimi overcame the challenges of a refugee background to study law, science and arts at the University of Western Australia. Raised a Muslim, he has had a keen fascination with Christianity and ‘the man riding a donkey' that is its central figure. Over the last 10 years, he has taught science and law at W.A. universities and mentored young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The co-founder of the NGO ‘I am the Other' he has helped mobilise 25,000 Australians to change government policy on polio eradication which could see polio eradicated by 2018.
