In episode 178, Prep Dish founder Allison Schaaf shares 3 ways you can incorporate seasonal items into your weekly meal planning. Visit a Farmer's Market Farmers markets are a great way to support local farmers and to also keep in touch with what's in season. Go on an In-Person Grocery Trip If you're like me and do most of your grocery shopping online these days, take an in-person trip to the grocery store to see which produce is in season at the moment. Be on the lookout for local items as well! Grow Your Own Fruits & Veggies If you're growing anything edible, talk to a friend or neighbor about doing a swap. For instance, you may be able to swap some of your tomatoes for some of their zucchini so you can enjoy more local, seasonal produce without growing many different items. Bonus - Use Prep Dish meal plans! Our Prep Dish meal plans take advantage of seasonal produce items so you don't have to think about it. Whether it's cherries in the summer or delicata squash in the fall, we'll help you tap into those seasonal items. In 1996 Apple had lost $867 million, and by 1997 they were on the verge of bankruptcy. According to the New York Times, they cut 1/3 of their workforce and were about 90 days out from running out of money. In a Hail Mary attempt to survive, the board brought back Steve Jobs as CEO. He eliminated 70% of their product plans, launched the now-famous “Think Different” ad campaign, and reimagined their entire product line. Just a few short years later in 2001, they launched the iPod which propelled them out of the red and into the black. Fast forward to today, and Apple is now worth over $2.3 trillion. If you're anything like me, the pandemic has completely changed your view on office work. Why go in, when you can ditch the commute and work from home? On the surface, this seems pretty straightforward, but it puts founders and entrepreneurs in a tricky situation. Remote work can make it extremely difficult to develop a real sense of culture. The lack thereof negatively impacts employee retention, recruitment, and overall satisfaction. This is part 2 of a 3-part BrightLive podcast series where we break down how to build a distinct brand. In this episode, we are honing in on developing company culture in a time of uncertainty. On the panel, we have Jacob Pechenick, the founder of Lettuce Grow, Manu Seve, the founder of Alphaa.io, and Loren Brill-Castle, the founder of Sweet Loren's. In this segment of the series we discuss: - How to nurture and develop talent from within your company - How being open about your mission statement can attract the right candidates to you - How to put out fires when key members of the team are on vacation

Jacob Pechenik is the co-founder of Lettuce Grow, a company he co-founded with Zooey Deschanel. The idea is profound: they've created a device that lets people grow a significant quantity of produce either inside their home or outside, with a self-contained hydroponics system that's basically foolproof. This system represents one of the easiest ways to dramatically improve the quality of home produce while greatly reducing the carbon footprint of getting leafy greens and veggies. As we love on this show, it really is a win-win. Just as interesting is Jacob's own, highly unusual career path, which saw him go from trading to MIT to producing dozens of Hollywood films to founding this company. It's a deeply inspiring tale that I know you'll enjoy. Here'e Jacob Pechenik, of Lettuce Grow.
In this episode of GoGreenfields, River and Terran talk indoor gardening with an expert on the subject. Gardening: Did you Know? Did you know that more than 50% of the food grown in this country goes to waste? It feeds the bottom of trash cans, instead of feeding the millions of Americans that rarely get to taste freshly grown foods. LettuceGrow saw the problem and set out to help the average American - even city dwellers - start their own mini farms. It is all done simply, conveniently, and takes up very little space, thanks to the Farmstand. Meeting an Indoor Gardening Guru For this episode, River and Terran met with LettuceGrow's co-founder, Jacob Pechenik, so we can learn more about LettuceGrow's take on sustainable food. Jacob is a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a longtime farming and gardening enthusiast. He's founded or co-founded multiple brands devoted to solving problems related to food, addressing issues such as logistics, waste, chemical use, and more. After growing all of these fantastic veggies, we had to prepare something for the family. The following is the recipe we used. Check out our social media accounts for bonus footage of us prepping the lettuce wraps. Feed the Family: Garden Fresh Lettuce Wraps Ingredients 2lbs ground chicken 2T avocado oil 1 small onion, minced 2 cups bell pepper 1 can water chestnuts, minced 4-6T soy sauce 6T hoisin sauce 2T sesame oil 2T rice vinegar 2T peanut butter 2T honey 2 cloves garlic, minced ¼ tsp ginger Directions In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, peanut butter, honey, garlic, and ginger. Set aside. In a frying pan, heat the avocado oil and add ground chicken. Cook until browned. Add onion to the pan and stir over medium heat until onions are translucent. Add peppers and minced water chestnuts and cook until peppers soften. Reduce heat to low, and add sauce mixture. Stir for 2 minutes, then remove from heat. Serve on bib lettuce. In this episode of One Day we talk about: Jacob's background and how the fact that he saw things in a non-conformist way inspired him to create businesses that tried to solve problems; Food distribution problems - a great percentage of the freshness from vegetables is lost on the way from the farm to the grocery store; Growing our food could be the solution to a lot of the food industry problems, such as the distribution matter; Recycling and reducing the waste of water are key aspects of the way Lettuce Grow operates (it maintains and increases the nutrients of the produce); The cannabis industry and the differences between growing medicinal plants and food; We can all make an effort to consume more vegetables. It will eventually result in environmental improvements; The importance of having a well-balanced diet full of nutritious foods; The different diet philosophies that exist and the particularities of each one of them. “More than growing plants, we are growing farmers, and farmers are the caretakers of the planet. That's the beginning of sustainability: knowing exactly how to care for the Earth. We are joined by Jacob Pechenik, owner of Lettuce Grow, which focuses on at-home farming. We talk about the environmental aspects of at-home farming, as well as the benefits of growing food at your home.
Imagine a world where growing your own food is as nutritious and cost-effective as grocery shopping at your favorite store. Jacob Pechenik, the Founder and CEO of Lettuce Grow, is on a mission to make this happen now. Referring to the company as the answer to industrialized big agriculture, Jacob's mission through Lettuce Grow (and its parent company The Farm Project) is to “democratize the growing of food for all” by “providing families access to clean, unprocessed food, [...] decreasing transportation emissions, drastically reducing water usage, and recycling ocean-bound plastics from places that lack recycling initiatives.” Having always had a passion for sustainable farming, Jacob began with a dream to transform the wasteful industrial food system. He started with the question, “How do I get more people to the farm?”, but later on began to ask, “How do I get the farm to more people?” That question led to his mission to create a million farmers throughout the country and by extension empower consumers to choose healthier, locally-produced alternatives. In the process, he hopes more people can reclaim that age-old sense of pride that comes with preparing one's own meal. Follow Lettuce Grow @lettucegrow Follow Chase @chase_chewning Key Highlights People have become so disconnected from how their food is sourced, grown, and prepared. The fact that ever-changing fad diets exist makes this obvious. Jacob explains how conscious consumerism aims to help us rediscover our food heritage. Industrial food distribution typically wastes 52% of the plant before it gets to the consumer. Jacob breaks down The Farm Project's innovative “distributed farming” model, which ensures maximum freshness throughout the whole process. Jacob shares his journey to becoming empowered in choosing the healthiest food he could for his children. How much of an impact does Jacob hope Lettuce Grow and The Farm Project will have on the food distribution industry? It's no secret that America's food supply has been compromised. 52% of produce is wasted. For food to survive the current supply chain, it has to be processed and then sprayed with chemicals. Not everyone has a green thumb, and if you live in a city, it can be hard to find the space to have your own personal garden. From Farmstand to the table, Lettuce Grow makes growing your own groceries easy. They ship you the starter plants, and then you drop them into the Farmstand. The system is self-watering and self-fertilizing. You just have to come back for the harvest. Grow outdoors, indoors, and year-round. In this episode, we spoke with Jacob Pechenik, the co-founder of Lettuce Grow. We talked about why he would've been more successful running a Krispy Kreme franchise, his 10-year vision for Lettuce Grow, and why it's better to be an outsider.
Jacob Pechenik is the founder & CEO of Lettuce Grow, which he co-founded with his now ex-wife Zooey Deschanel. When they learned what goes into their food (additives, processed foods, toxic agricultural chemicals, and food miles), they decided to create a system that allows everyone to grow 20% of their own fresh food at home with no pesticides and 95% less water than traditional agriculture. Jacob has had a very successful and somewhat unconventional career, as he has dabbled in a few different industries and successfully managed to build and sell companies. However, no company has given him the sense of purpose that he has as much as Lettuce Grow and the vision to change our current food system. Jacob and I discussed: Lettuce Grow's mission Trading stocks at 14 Becoming a successful movie producer How the whole process of Lettuce Grows works The future of growing food The importance of locally sourced food What are weather derivatives? What is distributed farming? Being a CEO in his early 20's And much more... Jacob Peckenik My Take: I believe that as technology advances growing your own food will become easier, more affordable, and accessible. I think that over the next few decades we will see a massive change in the way our food is produced and how we choose what we consume. marrying agriculture & technology will allow us all to grow our own food at home, from salads to steaks to oat milk. Team, I am stoked to bring you today's episode with the incredibly smart Jacob Pechenik. This absolute legend is the founder of Lettuce Grow, a company creating “Farm Stands” which are small hydroponic micro-farms that allow you to grow your own pre-sprouted plants that are ready to harvest, fresh, within three weeks. This company is truly amazing. Not only are they giving their consumers the power to produce at least 20% of their own food while using 95% less water. They are pesticide-free, non-GMO, use recyclable eco-conscious packaging, and do a host of other amazing things. If you are interested in entrepreneurship, sustainability, and or the agricultural industry, this is definitely the episode for you. Funny enough, too many it may seem like Jacob started Lettuce Grow out of nowhere. His story is actually quite incredible. Jacob attended MIT with no idea what he wanted to study. As he was undecided on his career trajectory, he chose the hardest major at the school, chemical engineering, and did it, graduating with a perfect GPA. I don't know about you legends but to me, that's pretty impressive. After graduating, he started a couple of companies in the finance and tech space, ended up becoming a film producer having helped produce over 30 films in his career, and then decided to drop all of that and get into the agricultural space in a unique way. After leaving the film industry, Jacob co-created the Farm Project and eventually built Lettuce Grow to help consumers develop a new food system. Lo's BFF, the Charlotte to his Samantha, Janelle Hansen is back for a two-part episode with the Lo Lifers! But first, we're getting a promising mental health update from Lo and a quick insight into his HGTV-level apartment facelift – more on that in an upcoming episode. Janelle also catches us up on what's going on in her apartment these days, and quick disclaimer that this pod is not actually sponsored by Lettuce Grow (but maybe someday we will be). Janelle and Lo are catching up and talking about all the content they've been binging recently, including the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That, which has got them wondering if politically-correct reboots are the way to go or if their fave outdated binges should stay in the past. Janelle was the last person on planet Earth to watch Sex and the City, and she's giving her thoughts and feels on both the classic show and the new reboot. Lo and Janelle reveal which characters they most relate to, both now and in the past, and describe why a reboot of one of their go-to shows, The Office, may be better left offscreen. One thing that we can say is positive about And Just Like That: finally a show is focusing on what happens to women after your 20s and 30s because, apparently, life still goes on. It's never too late to start over. They also ask a very important question that will be on your mind until next week's episode, even if you want it erased from your memory entirely: would you take a role in The Human Centipede? All this and more! Make sure to tune in next week for a special edition of Unpopular Opinions and some solid Lo Lifer advice Please be sure to rate, follow, review, and send to a friend so we can keep this sh!t show on the road, kings and kweens! Should this show be called "Wells' Favorite Things"? Or perhaps, “Wells' Favorite Things while Brandi just makes fun of him"? We'll think on it. Anyway, this week your hosts discuss the ridiculousness of daylight savings (if anyone knows who we can talk to about getting rid of this, hit us up), and Wells' new favorite thing, Lettuce Grow, because he's a horticulturalist now. We then welcome the incredible Ingrid Michaelson to discuss her favorite things, including but not limited to: sleeping, Christmas movies, Bachelor in Paradise, and the Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz. We also discuss her creative debut writing the music and lyrics for the musical adaptation of The Notebook! Plus, be sure to check out the deluxe edition of her festive “Songs For The Season” on November 5th. Wells won't be on the show next week because he's going on vacation, so Brandi will be joined by BFF Olivia Caridi to discuss how men are trash. See you then! Matt James took a lot of positives from his time as the lead on "The Bachelor." Gibson Johns interviews the most recent star of the show about life after the reality show, including focusing on his efforts to give back to his community through ABC Food Tours and his partnership with Lettuce Grow. They discuss where his passion for service stems from, where he hopes it can take him and the ways in which his time on "The Bachelor" has helped amplify that work. The interview also touches upon advice former host Chris Harrison gave Matt about life after the show, him and girlfriend Rachael Kirkconnell seeing eye-to-eye on keeping parts of their life private and more.
Host Allison Schaaf's husband Brook joins her today as they talk about the benefits and drawbacks of the Lettuce Grow Farmstand system. Lettuce Grow is a self-watering, self-fertilizing hydroponic farmstand that lets you grow greens (and other veggies!) year-round, either inside or out. Here's what they have to say: Benefits of the Lettuce Grow Farmstand: Saves space: it's a vertical tower requiring little room. Controlled environment: It's easier than growing plants in a yard because water and nutrients are controlled. Kids can help: It's fun and easy for even small kids to help with planting and harvesting. Bonus - they just may snack on the lettuce! Fresh greens: The number one benefit is of course having fresh greens to harvest whenever you want them. Sprouting seedlings: We've also used it to sprout seedlings to transplant outside. Drawbacks of Lettuce Grow: - Cost: It's an investment and definitely costs more than simply planting a traditional garden. - Maintenance: Lettuce Grow requires pretty minimal maintenance but you do need to add water and nutrients about once a week. It requires much less maintenance than a traditional garden though. - Protected Space: You need a protected space from critters like deer and part of it has to be plugged in. You may need either a heater or grow lights depending on where you live. Use code FRIEND-K07X for a discount (while availability lasts - limited to 3 uses!) Bre and Alan catch up and start talking about plants and her Lettuce Grow Garden Tower. She has had major success growing food, which is one step closer to Bre's vision of being self-sustaining with food sources. Go check out the Lettuce Grow website to take the quiz to see how many pods you need. Alan and Bre talk about sharing their food resources with others, whether that's wild game, eggs or vegetables. Bre leads us through breath & they briefly talk about resetting with breath, awareness around it, even if it's just a couple mindful breaths. They talk about Bre's run through the Thorofare, 62.7 miles in the most remote area in the lower 48. There is no turning back at a certain point, there are no bailout points. We won't spoil the details of the adventure, give it a listen. They talk about how this relates to life in that we often are in situations where there are “no options” & those times force us to show up for ourselves, to see our potential and expand the conversation into voluntary discomfort. Alan shares how he is less disturbed by the harder things in life because he has built confidence through jiu jitsu, finding a state of being relaxed in stress. Alan shares his perspective on how mortality affects his approach to life. The conversation shifts to a brief conversation around death & their perspectives on it & relationship to it. Coming back to voluntary discomfort & that it doesn't have to be this crazy run, it can be talking to a stranger, saying yes to an event that makes you nervous. Show yourself your potential. Alan says walk towards your fear! Use courage to replace confidence. Journal Prompt: Throw a little pity party & move on… Start with what if everything went wrong & follow up with what if everything worked out, the best possible outcome, what would life look like if you were courageous. Write about how you are going to take the chance! Jim Rohn quote - “Set a goal to become a millionaire for what it makes of you to achieve it. Do it for the skills you have to learn and the person you have to become.” HUGE THANK YOU to the Allyson Band https://allysonband.com/ for the podcast's music and Brianna Cote http://briannacote.com for photography and cover design. Have you ever been curious about starting a garden or growing your own food, but always assumed you didn't have adequate space or time? Turns out there's a solution to that: hydroponic gardening. In this episode, Laura chats with Jacob Pechenik, the co-founder of Lettuce Grow—a company that makes self-watering, self-fertilizing hydroponic Farmstands that make it super simple to grow your own food at home (even if you only have four square feet of space to do so). Together, they discuss the importance of understanding where your food comes from, the benefits of growing food yourself, and exactly how we can utilize hydroponic gardening in our own lives. Having kids changes your life and for our next guest it was the catalyst to better understand food and nutrition, which - like a true entrepreneur - led him to the launch of a new venture. On this episode of the Hot Spot series, Gabriel Ornelas chats with Jacob Pechenik, Co-founder and CEO of Lettuce Grow, an outdoor and indoor hydroponic growing system that allows it’s users to grow their own fresh food such as veggies, herbs, leafy greens, and fruits at home without pesticides and with 95 percent less water than traditional gardening. Before coming onto the show, Jacob expressed his passion and interest in Mezcal, so it was only appropriate to host him at the On The Pass studio for this chat while sipping some artisanal mezcal Gabriel recently brought back from his trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. Jacob shares how having kids was his catalyst for healthy eating and how a farm he helped start in Austin, Texas propelled the creation of Lettuce Grow and the beloved Farmstand product. Not only is The Farmstand producing delicious fruits and veggies at home, but it's an educational tool helping families reconnect with their food. Jacob's hope is his product helps create a deeper appreciation and better decision making around food. Happy Earth Day!!!!! If you haven't heard yet, a new report by Lettuce Grow and The Farm Project JUST came out and boy, oh boy, is it in perfect time for Earth Day. Did you know that average APPLE could be as old as 10 months from when it was harvested, before it gets in your mouth (or hands at the store)?! Did you know that while the vast majority of consumers wants to believe signage from the grocey store that somewhing is "locally grown" it could be as far away as in a different time zone? WHAT?! This Earth Day, we hope you enjoy learning about how you and your family could become more sustainable for not only our children's future, but their children's children as well. We have one earth. Dear Podcast Listener, On this episode, Tara and Stephanie get down and dirty about trimming your roots and maintaining your Lettuce Grow Farmstand. We also talk about how sometimes we're wrong, how the Lettuce Grow social media team is AMAZING, and more about the debris we cause in our yards by trimming our plants... and leaving the leaves on the floor. We also get a brief visit from the Letty's "big brother" Desy (the 5yo mentioned too many times), and we talk about something we want to see on the Farmstand v2. SPOILER: Stephanie also gushes about Tara's incredible gift giving skills. It's true. She rules. After graduating from MIT with a BS in Chemical Engineering he founded and led an early web-based B2B supply chain platform, a peer-to-peer derivatives trading platform, and a film finance and production company with over 30 film credits. With Jacob as Founder and CEO, The Farm Project launched the hit web series “Your Food's Roots” in partnership with ATTN: in 2017.
