It's a bumper transfer special on The Cycling Podcast Féminin this month. In what is proving to be one of the busiest and most significant transfer markets in recent memory, Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Orla Chennaoui discuss all the major moves. With so many of the peloton's biggest champions making the switch, we pick out which transfers excite us and surprise us the most. We'll be discussing the comebacks of former world champions Anna van der Breggen and Pauline Ferrand Prevot in detail as well as looking at the consequences of moves by the likes of Elisa Longo Borghini, Niamh Fisher-Black, Juliette Labous, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig and of course Demi Vollering. Our mini feature takes us back to the Tour de France Femmes where Rose and Denny explored why the Dutch always dominated the women's road racing scene. We speak to Team SD Worx's Lorena Wiebes and Mischa Bredewold and former pro Iris Slappendel, and get an outside perspective from British riders Lizzie Deignan and Becky Storrie. Also on the agenda, we ask what would your grandma rather eat: a mint chocolate selection box or a chocolate orange? Why is Lotte Kopecky skipping the Tour and has women's racing now reaching a financial tipping point?

The spring Classics are over and the Grand Tours are looming, starting with the Vuelta Femenina, which kicks off this weekend. But before we get into the Vuelta Femenina and ask if Demi Vollering can win for the first time this season, there's another huge women's story in town: that of world champion Lotte Kopecky deciding to bypass the Tour de France Femmes in August — something which would have been unthinkable even a year ago — in favour of the Paris Olympic Games. We examine the reasons behind the world number one's decision to miss the biggest race of the season in order to target gold in three events at the Paris Olympic. We hear from her French rival Audrey Cordon-Ragot, who explains why she isn't surprised to hear the news about Kopecky's change of focus. This leads us on to a wider issue... With reigning Tour de France Femmes champion Demi Vollering reportedly set to move from SD Worx to FDJ Suez next season on a salary rumoured to be around one million euros, we ask whether this growth rate of women's cycling is sustainable? Is it going to create an even bigger divide between the rich and poor in the women's peloton? Next up is a preview of the week-long Vuelta Femenina, where Vollering will be chasing an elusive first win of the season. Movistar team director Tim Harris tells us what he's expecting from the season's first Grand Tour and also reveals his hopes for his own team, which will feature Movistar leader Liane Lippert for the first time this season after her recovery from a December leg break. Staying with the women's elite, we speak to Britain's Lizzie Deignan, another rider who's on the way back after breaking a bone, in her case an arm in a crash at the Tour of Flanders. The Lidl-Trek rider also has her focus on the Olympics, where she hopes to better the silver medal she won at London 2012. She outlines her programme leading into Paris, talks about her confidence in her ability to get into the form she needs, and about Britain's emerging strength as a road race power, which could benefit her this summer. In our 'How to Make Cycling Better' feature, we hand the microphone to French veteran stage racer and recent Liège-Bastogne-Liège runner-up Romain Bardet, who offers an intriguing proposal that he believes would help to reduce the control of the major teams on racing, making the sport more unpredictable and exciting. And, finally, was there ever a time when French financial services company Cofidis was not sponsoring a bike team? Once again, the team's contract has just been renewed, ensuring that there will be a Cofidis jersey in the peloton until at least 2028. So what's the secret of their staying power? We ask French journalist Pierre Carrey, the cycling correspondent Swiss paper Le Temps, about the French team and whether there's anything to those widespread rumours linking them with French star Julian Alaphilippe, whose contract is up at the end of this season. Another bike race, another Tadej Pogačar exhibition. The Slovenian didn't just win the Volta a Catalunya, one of cycling's toughest week-long stage races, he completely annihilated the opposition.Pogačar's only 25, but already he counts 69 victories on his palmarès, including two Tours de France and five Monuments. Is there anything he can't do? Is he now knocking on the door of eternal greatness? We put that question to the man himself in Catalonia, where Pogačar tells us that he's stepped up a level this year and is now going into every race determined to win, and always with a smile on his face.We also also hear from George Bennett and Guillaume Martin, who admit that the rest of the peloton are now racing for second place almost every time Pogačar takes to the start line.We also look ahead to this Sunday's Tour of Flanders, where there's also one name on everyone's lips, that of two-time champion Mathieu van der Poel. With Pogačar not defending his title and Wout van Aert and Jasper Stuyven now sidelined by broken collarbones sustained in this week's Dwars door Vlaanderen, the world champion is the outstanding favourite for a third Ronde success. We hear from Mads Pedersen, Michael Matthews, Jordi Meeus and Matteo Trentin on if and how Van der Poel can be beaten. And, finally, as Tour de France Femmes goes from strength to strength, what is happening with the British women's scene? Cycling Weekly's Tom Thewlis reveals the latest on the Women's Tour of Britain, which now, of course, has former Ineos team manager Rod Ellingworth as its race director. After a period when it appeared that the Women's Tour might not take place in 2024, there are growing reasons for optimism, with a route taking shape that includes two opening stages in Wales. We also speak to Ford Ride London Classique technical director Kevin Nash on the strides being made by that three-day May race, and hear from Britain's emblematic road racer Lizzie Deignan, who highlights the continued growth and wider popularity of women's racing in Britain and how the scene has changed since she won silver in the road event at the 2012 London Olympics. This podcast is brought to you with the support of our sponsor, Saddle Skedaddle.Support the show

We're looking at motherhood in our February episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin. With Ellen Van Dijk's much-anticipated return from maternity leave on the horizon, we explore the growing trend of racers returning to the peloton post-baby. Rose Manley speaks to Lizzie Deignan, one of the first women to be supported by her team to a return to racing and her agent Emma Wade, as well as new mum and Uno-X rider Joss Lowden, former Trek-Segafredo rider Abi Van Twisk and former British champion Meg Backstedt (née Hughes). Rose is also joined by Orla Chennaoui and Denny Gray to look at the recent racing, most notably a rare debut win for the GOAT Marianne Vos at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Discussion descends into bickering as the team try to decide how well Lidl-Trek played their tactics at the race after finishing third and fourth. We also ponder Lotte Kopecky's recent transformation after showing off her climbing legs on the UAE Tour's Jebel Hafeet and wonder how that might affect a seemingly tense relationship with teammate Demi Vollering. A world champion on track and road, an Olympic silver medalist and winner of the most prestigious races in professional cycling, she has consistently been among the peloton's strongest riders in a period of exponential growth and transformational change in women's cycling. In a wide-ranging interview, Lizzie describes pivotal moments in her career, from being recruited as a teenager to British Cycling's Talent Team to winning the inaugural women's Paris-Roubaix with an extraordinary solo victory equal in significance to such a monumental occasion.   Speaking in the week before Christmas from Lidl-Trek's pre-season training camp in Spain, Lizzie provides fascinating insights into some of the biggest victories of her career and offers an insightful commentary on the female sport's continuing battle for parity. Co-hosts Timothy John and Phil Jones, the Managing Director of Brother UK, attended the 2023 Rayner Foundation dinner and charity auction. The pair shared a table with former world champion Lizzie Deignan (Lidl-Trek) and her husband Phil, a Grand Tour stage winner, and key members of the Foundation's organising committee.  Despite enjoying the awards ceremony, charity auction and key note speeches, Phil and Tim found time to gather insights from this unique event: one that unites many of the decision makers in domestic and professional cycling with the stars of tomorrow. The Rayner dinner is at once glamorous and authentic. Committee members Serena Meakin, Tim Harris and Josh Cutler describe their practical and emotional investment in the Foundation and the importance of the dinner to its excellent work. This year's event attracted 301 guests: a higher turnout than last year, but still below pre-Covid levels. It must continue to grow. Listen out for insights and observations from Giles Pidcock, Lewis Askey (Groupama-FDJ), and Oliver Knight (Team Cofidis), the Foundation's Rider of the Year. Charlie Paige (TDT-Unibet) and Tom Portsmouth (Bingoal WB), other graduates to the professional ranks from the class of 2023, describe their experiences of living and racing abroad.   Hear too from the talented juniors joining prestigious development teams and the young female riders excelling in a new landscape for women's cycling shaped to a large degree by Lizzie Deignan. And enjoy Tim and Phil's extended discussion on the Foundation's work and its intersection with the domestic road scene. The pair consider the seemingly insatiable appetite of WorldTour development teams for young British riders. They discuss the explosion in British women's racing too, with as many as seven UCI Continental women's teams mooted for next season. And they reflect on the purpose of the elite men's National Road Series.  Hear from those at the heart of the most respected charity in British cycle sport: its tireless volunteers, influential supporters and shooting stars. The Foundation has helped more than 90 British riders turn professional. Phil and Tim, experienced guides in the labyrinthine world of domestic racing, provide an informed commentary.

Does Pidcock think he's got what it takes to be a contender?"Beergate" or "Fizzy Watergate"? Alasdair Hooper hosts the latest episode of SportSpiel with rising Scottish cycling star Anna Shackley. The 20-year-old seemingly came out of nowhere back in 2021 when – then aged 18 – she signed for esteemed cycling team SD Worx. Prior to that she had mostly been focusing on the track with the British national programme, winning multiple Scottish junior national titles before winning the elite British points race and team pursuit titles in 2020. But during lockdown her coach reached out to the SD Worx team manager and that's where the journey, and subsequent upward trajectory stemmed from. Fast forward to now and the rider is focusing on the road and has an Olympics appearance under her belt, after she was picked as the only support rider for Lizzie Deignan at the Tokyo games.  But there is no doubting Shakley's talent and enthusiasm for learning as she aims to develop her skills even more. In this interview the rider talks all about that quick rise, being involved at an Olympic Games unlike any other as well as her love for scotland – and the scottish weather – among plenty of other topics. Peter Stuart and Dan Cavallari run their beady eyes over the past year's technical innovations and what 2022 has in store. In 2021, we saw semi-wireless Dura Ace, SRAM phasing out mechanical groupsets, Lizzie Deignan winning Paris-Roubaix on a 1x gear system, and tubeless replacing tubulars. As for the new year, Peter considers whether the pure cyclo-cross racing bike's days are numbered as manufacturers continue to focus their efforts on gravel. Aero is making a return to the fore. And power measurement grows increasingly sophisticated, alongside integrated electronics with applications outside of the gearing-only systems. Meanwhile, Dan's hot take is that one-piece bar and stem combos are on the way out. Crazy guy… or maybe not. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Lizzie Deignan has held just about every title available to road racers. She was the 2015 World Champion, won silver medal at the 2012 Olympics in London, and is a four time British national champion. She has also won the prestigious trio of races consisting of the Tour of Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and the inaugural women's Paris-Rubaix earlier this year. In this conversation, Lizzie recounts her experience at Rubaix, including what it was like encountering the infamous cobbles for the first time, being pursued by Marianne Vos, and vomiting in the final miles of the race. She also talks about how becoming a mother midway through her career was a liberating experience. At a time when cycling wasn't bringing her joy, she says that she “wanted to do something that was just an emotional, non-logical decision.” She talks about balancing family life with racing, and why having a child has actually extended rather than shortened her career.

Fingers crossed we will get to Paris for a grand finale. A Rouleur quartet of Andy McGrath, Ian Cleverly, Maria David and Stuart Clapp join Ian Parkinson for a Tour chinwag. Lizzy Banks was a revelation at the GP Plouay, finishing second to an imperious Lizzie Deignan. She's been a guest on our podcast before, because she's a great talker as well as a brilliant bike rider. The Équipe Paule Ka rider enjoyed La Course immensely, is improving her racecraft to go alongside the strong legs, and will be in action at the Giro Donne imminently. Rouleur contributor Maria David has been following Donnons des Elles au Velo, a group of riders who ride the Tour de France route one day ahead of the men to campaign for a women's race of equal standing to the men's. Now in its sixth year, it seems ASO and Christian Prudhomme are finally listening to their fine efforts. Finally! Desire Editor Stu has broken arms. Yes, that's right. Both of them. A bike riding incident, you'd think? No, but there were wheels involved. Don't do this at home, kids. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

"I'm not training to that level," says Deignan of Van Vleuten, "most of the male pros I know are not training to the same level. Yorkshire's Lizzie Deignan knows what it takes to become World Champion. When her surname was still Armitstead, she claimed the coveted rainbow jersey in Richmond, Virginia in 2015. In the couple of years afterwards, Lizzie was in unbeatable form, hoovering up wins in some of the biggest races on the women's calendar. Then, having settled down with husband Phil (also a pro-cyclist), she took 2018 out of the sport to become a mum. This year though, the Worlds are back in Britain for the first time in a generation, and being raced on the Yorkshire lanes Lizzie knows so well. We rode together on a loop out of Harrogate, that took in the finish where she aims to clinch the rainbow stripes again.Look for @HomeRoads on Instagram, Twitter and Strava for more information, images and the rides. Trek-Segafredo rider discusses parenting, pro cycling and dreams of winning a second world title in Yorkshire   Welcome to the Cyclingnews Podcast Women's Edition, brought to you by Sportful, Pinarello and Floyds of Leadville. In this episode Cyclingnews' women's editor Kirsten Frattini sits down with former world champion and new mom Lizzie Deignan to discuss motherhood, her postpartum return to pro cycling, dreams of winning a second world title at Yorkshire World Championships, and her biggest hopes for the future of women's cycling. Deignan took time away from the sport to give birth to her first child and only recently returned to the peloton with her new team Trek-Segafredo at the Ardennes Classics, Tour de Yorkshire, Tour of California and the OVO Energy Women's Tour, where she won the overall title. At a time when major sport sponsors are pushing promotional content geared toward equality, female athletes such as American Olympians Kara Goucher, Allyson Felix and Alysia Montaño, have exposed American company Nike for its performance-based reductions clause in athlete contracts, and how that affects athletes who want to have a baby. Montaño wrote a detailed opinion piece in The New York Times titled "Nike told me to dream crazy, until I wanted a baby", where she described the company's policy of reducing and cutting salaries after some of its female athletes decided to become pregnant. Female cyclists can relate to this policy as contracts have been cancelled or considered nullified if an athlete becomes pregnant. Hear from Deignan on her decision to start a family while at the peak of her cycling career and why she left long-time team Boels Dolmans. She also speaks about the importance of competing for a team and sponsors that support her cycling career while also being a mother. Deignan also spoke about the UCI's decision to include a maternity clause and other insurances into its standard athlete-team contracts beginning in 2020. But she noted that a similar amendment, in the form of a paternity clause, would be welcomed among the men's peloton as well. We hope you enjoy our discussion with Lizzie Deignan.
