What the World Needs Now.

Lucky Episode 7! Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (aka: Goya) is our focus this episode and boy do we have a lot to say about him. Mara and Baker are big fans! In our sharing is caring segment, we cover the recent “I just wanted to move the Warhol print for a laugh, I wasn’t going to steal it!” guy in Rochester, NY. Plus that dude who found Viking treasure last week, and then Baker explains why Beeple (Mike Winkelmann) is a low key genius who is mainstreaming NFT art sales with Christie’s. We briefly attempt to explain NFTs and what this Beeple auction at Christie’s might mean for the future of art. All of that and lots more Goya talk, including why his Los Caprichos series reminds Baker of an 80’s thrash metal band. A group of women taking selfies damaged artworks by renowned Spanish artists in Yekaterinburg / jɛˌkatəˈriːnbəːɡ /, Russia. The exhibit at the International Arts Center Main Avenue featured Francisco Goya's Los Caprichos, a collection of artworks published in 1799. Alongside Goya's work is Salvador Dali's own interpretation of the piece. In the museum's CCTV footage, the temporary wall holding the works of Goya and Dali can be seen falling and almost hitting another museumgoer. One of the women taking selfies is also shown standing beside the collapsed wall. According to reports, the women took their selfies against the paintings' background. The group eventually caused the temporary wall to crash, damaging the paintings on display. Although the women tried to escape from the scene, they were later identified and interrogated by the police. As a result of the incident, the frame and glass containing Goya's artwork broke, but the picture itself remained intact. On the other hand, Dali's piece suffered a 10-centimeter cut. Experts assessed the extent of the damage on the artworks. However, the value of the pieces and the cost of repairs were not revealed. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia conducted an investigation following the event. While being questioned by the police, the women explained that they had only touched the wall by accident while taking selfies. Despite this explanation, the gallery staff claimed that the women had misbehaved. In a written statement, the gallery's deputy director asked that the women be prosecuted for their actions. However, Yekaterinburg does not want to file criminal charges against the women, who are expected to pay an undisclosed amount for damages.

The University of Arizona Museum of Art welcomedAndrew Schulz, art history professor from the University of Oregon. Schulz, author of "Goya's Caprichos, Aesthetics, Perception and the Body," gave a lecture on Goya's Los Caprichos in conjunction with "Goya's Mastery in Prints: Los Caprichos," an exhibition currently on view at UAMA. By examining Goya’s Los Caprichos within the context of the artist's career and the intellectual climate of late 18th-century Spain, this lecture will consider how the artist’s contemporaries would have understood the print series and explore how we might understand it today. Utilizing satire and a dark imagination, Spanish painter and printmaker Francisco Goya published Los Caprichos, a series of 80 etchings in 1799. Goya was stone deaf; therefore he relied on his keen observation to represent Spain during a period of social and economic hardship. Los Caprichos portrays goblins and aristocrats alike, enacting the excesses of the nobility and the corruption of the church. Goya's characters themselves exist somewhere between actuality and fantasy. In fact, in Spanish the term "capricho" means whim or an expression of the imagination. Goya used whimsy but also gross caricature to expose a nation rife with corruption and evil.
