Louise and Michelle are joined by Jules, Team Coordinator for the Lost Dogs Tracking Network, Southern Counties. Jules talks through how she went from dog training and truffle-hunting to coordinating a team of scent-tracking dogs across Wiltshire, Hampshire, Berkshire and beyond. It's a genuinely fascinating (and at times emotional) listen covering how tracking dogs work, what to do in the first crucial hours after losing a dog, and why a cheap fabric collar in a sandwich bag could be the difference between finding your dog quickly or not at all. Equal parts practical advice and brilliant dog stories.     Timings 00:00 – How Jules got started From dog training and horses, to truffle-hunting dogs, to a "very naughty spaniel" who needed a job — Jules's route into lost dog tracking via Claire Brown, founder of the original West Yorkshire team. 01:18 – Southern Counties coverage Jules is based near Andover, covering Wiltshire, Hampshire, Berkshire, parts of Surrey, and sometimes as far as Oxford and Gloucestershire. The network now has 11 teams nationally, with the goal of nobody being more than an hour from a trained tracking dog. 03:34 – How the dogs actually track The difference between scent work (find this specific trained thing) and lost-dog tracking (match this scent, in a constantly changing environment). Pearl Jam's 2008 tour was a short, but memorable run in between album releases that took them along the entirety of the U.S. East Coast. After shows at Bonnaroo, Madison Square Garden and Mansfield among many more, they finished the run by playing a benefit show at the famed Beacon Theater in New York City. The band helped raise $3 million for the Robin Hood Foundation to fight poverty within the city limits. 2,500 lucky fans were able to witness what happened on this night, help raise funds and awareness while getting a great show out of it. 2008 has a few major storylines for the band that mostly center around songs returning from long absences. This was the first time in 13 years that they brought W.M.A. to the table as a full performance, the first time in the Matt Cameron era that Who You Are was played, and it was the debut year for Lost Dog opening track, All Night. All three of these songs help define the time period, and if you happened to witness the band in New York that year, these songs were accompanied live by three local backing singers. We'll go into depth on how these songs benefitted from a different feel for the band at the time, and how the singers blended in soul with rock 'n' roll to create memorable performances. Today, we're talking about the camera company Ring, lost dogs, and the surveillance state. Since it aired for a massive audience at the Super Bowl, Ring's Search Party commercial has become a lightning rod for controversy. It's easy to see how the same technology that can find lost dogs can be used to find people, and then used to invade our privacy in all kinds of uncomfortable ways, by cops and regular people alike. I upload the upscaled image, and ask simply, “What kind of bird is this?” Likely ID: Red-tailed Hawk (juvenile) Based on the bulky buteo shape, overall brown upperparts, the pale “checkerboard” pattern on the wings, and the strongly banded tail (common in young birds before they develop the classic red tail), this looks most consistent with a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk. We do indeed have red-tailed hawks around here.
