On the 20th anniversary of 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, Nicole and Sarah visit the Salt Lake City area -  including the Utah Olympic Park and Woodward Park City. It's clear that the 2002 Olympics have left a lasting legacy throughout the area. We visited is the Utah Olympic Park (called the “UOP” by the locals).  The UOP  was built for the 2002 Winter Olympics and is just 25 miles east of Salt Lake City.  The 400 acre venue houses one of only four sliding tracks (bobsleigh, luge, skeleton) luge, skeleton) in North America, six Nordic ski jumps, a 2002 Winter Games museum, and a multitude of adventure activities.  At the UOP we saw kids training slalom and moguls. We met a fellow ski mom, Barbara Wirostko Morelli and watched her daughter Cristina train freestyle moguls. We learned about how mogul competitions are scored and got some great advice for moms and kids interested in mogul competition. Cristina attends The Winter Sports School - a school for dedicated winter athletes that out of session during the winter months so she can train full time. We explored Woodward Park City, an indoor/outdoor sports facility and talked with Phoebe Mills, the General Manager of Woodward Park City (and an Olympic medalist). Inside Woodward Park City is a 66,000 square foot Action Sports Hub featuring an action sports concrete park, pump track, mini ramps, parkour zone, spring floor, Olympic grade trampolines, foam pits, and a digital media lab. Outside the Action Sports facility has skateparks, mountain biking and bmx terrain. Woodward offers a huge variety of indoor and outdoor sports options.Woodward's progression-based facilities help kids learn new skills and achieve their goals in a positive and safe environment. Kids advance through progression and air awareness, starting indoors on the spring floor, tramps, and foam pits, and then taking those skills and techniques outdoors, to the parks.  Woodward has a variety of winter and summer camps for kids from age 7-17.Just recently, Woodward Park City was named an official U.S. Ski & Snowboard Training Center through Jan. 2025. The partnership allows athletes to utilize Woodward's indoor and outdoor venues. Athletes will be training year-round in preparation for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Italy. Please support our sponsor!Mabels Labels at www.mabelslabels.com and use code SKIMOMS for 15% off your first orderJoin the Ski Moms Fun Community!Follow us on Instagram @skimomsfunCheck out the Ski Moms Fun Store Email us at sarah@skimomsfun.com

Julie Ellis a co-founder of Mabel’s Labels, one of Canada’s greatest small business success stories.   Back in 2002, Julie and her three partners Julie Cole, Cynthia Esp and Tricia Mumby decided  they could do better than the scribbles on masking tape that were being passed off as labels to keep track of for kids clothing and personal items. So, after much research, they brought a brand new product to market in the form of personalized waterproof name labels and tags. From its humble beginnings Mabel's Lables has grown into an award-winning, market-leading company loved by Moms and kids alike.   Mabels labels was recently sold  to paper and label giant Avery Labels which lead to Julie’s exit from the business she had founded and run for nearly 15 years   Julie is now entering a new phase of her career as she shares her experience and expertise with other entrepreneurs helping them gain clarity and accelerate their success.   Mabels Labels hadn't been looking to sell the business when they were approached by Avery but quickly realized that the idea acquirer “checked all the boxes” and helped them address some big questions: how they would finance further growth and who of the 4 founders would ultimately lead the company.   Julie adds that what’s best for the business may not be what’s best for you personally and what you would do as an autonomous leader is much different than what you would do as part of a 4-person team   While selling a business is often the end goal for many entrepreneurs, the experience can be bittersweet as it was in Julie’s case. As someone who is used to giving 110%, she says it took her at least 3 months to accept the idea that she was able to take some downtime.

If you have ever put a label on a sippy cup, chances are Julie Cole’s company, Mabels Labels, produced it. Cole and her three partners built Mabel’s Labels into a $10 million business providing labels for kids’ clothing and accessories before being acquired in early 2016 by C.C.L. Industries, the parent company of Avery Labels.   Cole and her partners were able to add hundreds of thousands of dollars to the price they got for their business using a negotiation technique called “normalization” – listen to find out how.

Today, I'm so excited to speak to Mabel's Labels founder, blogger, and mama to many, Julie Cole. Julie's business has been featured on the Huffington Post, The View, InStyle Magazine, Forbes, and many others, and her oldest of 6 kids has autism.   You can get Mabel's Label's through their website or at Target. For those of you with runners (I'm lookin' at you, Roman!), I'm gonna encourage you to check out these handy disposable ID bracelets - especially if you're planning to go somewhere magical like Disney, and want to make it out the other side with your kid. Here's the link to the excellent summer camp guide that I mentioned on the podcast - Julie wrote this backed by her experience in choosing camps for her own kids, and it picks apart how to consider your child's unique character and interests, figuring out what's left in your wallet, and finding the right environment for them. Also, here are links to her blog post Nice Things You Say That Annoy Me, and her hilariously well-reasoned 6 Reasons to Have 6 Kids, that originally appeared in the Huffington Post.
