Welcome to this episode of 20/20 Money! My guest on today's show is Peter Lazaroff, CFA, CFP®, Chief Investment Officer at Plancorp, host of The Long Term Investor podcast, and the author of the book Making Money Simple. Peter joins me on the show to talk about an investment approach that has been around for a long time but is starting to become more prevalent for investors: direct indexing. We talk about what direct indexing is through an abridged story on the evolution of investment vehicles for investors, some of the considerations and tradeoffs, how a direct indexing approach can minimize a practice owner's tax bill in the year that they sell their practice, and why an index investor should be, at the very least, doing their own due diligence on a direct indexing advisory firm & manager to complement their already-sound investment philosophy. As a reminder, you can get all the information discussed in today's conversation by visiting our website at integratedpwm.com and clicking on the Learning Center. While there, be sure to subscribe to our monthly “planning life on purpose” newsletter that's filled with tips and ideas to help you plan your best life, on purpose. You can also set up a Triage conversation to learn a little bit more about how we serve in the capacity of a personal and professional CFO: helping OD practice owners around the country reduce their tax bill, proactively manage cash flow, and make prudent investment decisions both in and out of their practice to ultimately help them live their best life on purpose. Lastly, if you're interested in learning more about the 20/20 Money Ultimate Financial Masterclass, a course that we created to help ODs become “brilliant at the financial basics,” please check out the link in the show notes of this episode to learn more. In this episode, Cameron Howe is joined by Peter Lazaroff, CIO of Plancorp and Brightplan, overseeing over $6 billion in assets under management for over 1,500 clients nationwide. Peter is also the author of the book "Making Money Simple," with a foreword by Sam Altman. Portfolio Construction Philosophy [00:59] There is no perfect one-size-fits-all portfolio. The perfect portfolio is the one an individual can stick with through market ups and downs. Plancorp's approach starts with an investment philosophy rooted in peer-reviewed academic research to avoid deviating from the established portfolio. The starting point is the total market portfolio, as that's the likely benchmark for most investors. Factors like liquidity needs, employment status (human capital), and risk tolerance inform deviations from the total market portfolio. Home country bias is common, with investors tending to overweight domestic holdings. Quantitative vs. Fundamental Approach [10:16] Plancorp takes a more quantitative approach, focusing on factors with robust research backing and proven out-of-sample data across asset classes. They primarily use three or four factors like value, profitability, and in some cases, size and momentum. The goal is to implement robust factors while avoiding the "bad side effects" of implementing unsuccessful factors from data mining. Reducing Emotional Biases [28:45] Clients, advisors, and portfolio managers all have inherent biases that must be accounted for. Techniques like red team/blue team debates, blind voting on portfolio metrics, and keeping investment committees small help reduce bias. Humility and viewing decisions through the lens of process rather than just outcomes is crucial. Advisors should be aware of biases introduced by marketing from asset managers. Key Takeaways Don't overcomplicate investing; the simplest solutions are often best. Embrace an evidence-based, hypothesis-testing approach to portfolio decisions. Reducing behavioral biases requires processes that foster diverse perspectives and honest self-evaluation. An advisor's role is to help clients stick to their long-term investment plan and avoid costly mistakes driven by emotion. Soon after his second job… he was fired! A moment of relief and freedom was what he felt, not sure what his mother felt when he told her he was jobless at 23…He then went in search of a more ethical path, a business he could set up where the reward was equal to the work put in. “If they are making pounds, why am I making pennies?” - was his thought process, not happy with slow progression and bureaucracy (& having to wear smart shoes everyday). This lead him to opening a Recruitment business (not sure where the ethics went) which doubled in profit every year, for 4 years. He hated it. Golden handcuffs they call it.Fortunately, he used the cash he'd built up from that business, to educate himself in Property Investing. Soon, he'd stopped the business and transitioned into Property Investment full time. Today's guest is Peter Lazzaroff, author of Making Money Simple. Now, you may be wondering why I'm talking to a financial expert on this health show – but it makes a lot of sense if you stop and answer one question: Have you ever been stressed about money? I'm going to guess your answer is YES! Because money is the biggest cause of stress in the United States. Bills, kids, jobs, the cost of daily living: This is the stress we tend to ignore or push down. Left uncontrolled, this stress affects your health – your body and your immune system. Stress is a factor in five out of the six leading causes of death — heart disease, cancer, stroke, lower respiratory disease, and accidents. An estimated 75 percent to 90 percent of all doctor visits are for stress-related issues. Percent of people who regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress: 77% Percent of people who regularly experience psychological symptoms caused by stress: 73% Making Money Simple This isn't really a subject taught in school, much like nutrition, but it has such a huge influence on our lives and is a major stressor. So where do you start? The most important thing is to start now. Because everything feels overwhelming (i.e. stressful), it's natural for us to put these things off. But the longer you do that, the more stressful things will be in the long run. There are some simple actions that you can start taking today: The neural patterns in our brain view saving money the same as giving it away to someone you don't know. So find meaningful goals and prioritize them. Budget in reverse: automate your savings once you know what your financial goals are. If investment seems overwhelming, don't be afraid to hire a professional. They will find things that you might miss, but you will also be buying back time. However, you need to make sure you're asking an advisor the correction questions! Luckily, Peter has put together a free worksheet that will help you interview a financial advisor. Top 3 Hot Points:What is a fiduciary promise? From Career to Financial Success. Financial Education for Freedom. Making #Money Simple and Your #Financial #Success with @PeterLazaroff Tweet This On This Episode You Will Hear:[00:30] Introduction [10:40] The ultimate efficiency enhancers you have to figure it out. But I’m with you. When I moved to Plancorp, about four and a half years ago, the biggest life-changing move I made was time-blocking. Nobody can touch my morning. My mornings are sacred. I put big blocks on my calendar. I said do not book meetings, and it allows me in, the best thing you can do is just try not to open an email. [20:00] I sit down and I write and I unload. I don’t always know what I’m going to write in advance. So I mentioned when I wrote 5000 words, I said, I wonder if I could turn this into a book. I just kept going and naturally, that part was really natural to me, because I write frequently now. [33:00] You can go get a lot of investment advice online for super cheap, the thing we do is we just make sure people don’t get killed on their taxes and get your tax projections. You do that through eliminating surprises in a simple tax projection as a business owner. You might find that you can accelerate income or expenses, or the salary you have. Stay below that net investment, income tax and all the planning work that goes into that. That’s a big reason to outsource that so you can focus on your business. [40:00] I come from parents of doctors, so maybe I’m biased. Generally, you go to a professional expert, you go to the attorney. Generally, if you go to someone, you should trust that the advice is not in anyone’s interest, but making your financial life better. [51:55] Final Words Final Words:I think a lot of people just want to make sure they’re doing the right thing. Money can seem complicated but it just doesn’t have to be. Life is very complicated and you’re trying to find ways to simplify it. Don’t let it be something that you put to the side because it seems complicated. There’s a lot of great resources out there, not just my own that are helping simplify it. The internet has done wonderful things, podcasts like this have done wonderful things in making these issues more approachable. So I really encourage you to try to, if there’s something you’ve been putting off, like your finances. That one thing you can probably think of, go ahead and just do that take care of it now because the benefit from it will compound over time. Today our expert guest is Peter Lazaroff, chief investment officer at Plancorp which manages over $4 billion for its clients and author of the book Making Money Simple. He's here to share complex issues and make them manageable to just about anyone. At a young age, Peter knew he had a future in investing. On his 12th birthday, he received a single Nike stock from his grandma. While it seemed disappointing at first, he was impressed by these $1 checks he received in the mail every quarter. He continued to receive stocks for companies he was familiar with each birthday up until age 18. Peter had a great mentor, who taught him that he had to learn something new every day. He started taking notes at every meeting, and at one meeting he ended up being asked to send his notes to the president of his company, and then eventually he was sending them out to everyone in the company. He used his writing, which naturally led to his book This was the book that Peter had in him, and he wrote it in the evenings, outlining his philosophy on building wealth, and the system he uses. How do you make money simple? Try to focus on the endgame: What are your goals? The neural patterns in our brain view saving money the same as giving it away to someone you don't know. Find meaningful goals and prioritize them. Budget in reverse: automate your savings once you know what your financial goals are. If investment seems overwhelming, don't be afraid to hire a professional. They will find things that you might miss, but you will also be buying back time. Make sure you're asking an advisor the correction questions. Getting your finances under control doesn't have to be difficult or overwhelming. Peter's best piece of advice is to just start. Small actions can make a big difference, so discover your financial goals and work backwards to start achieving them. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “The most important thing is to start now. There is something that everybody can do to improve their finances, even if it's small. One of the things we don't respect is the power of compounding. Small habits compound over time, and if you start today, I assure you there is something that can change the rest of your life in your finances. There is probably something that you're thinking about that you've been putting off. Whatever that thing is, go home and block some time off on your calendar and do it.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. IRA, Roth and 401K management can be confusing, that’s why I answer listener questions in the Practical Planning segment of this episode. This is the last episode of the How to Use Your Accounts series. You’ll definitely want to go back and listen to the entire series to help you familiarize yourself with the different types of retirement accounts and how to finally use them in retirement. Next month we’ll dive into how technology improves retirement. But for now, listen to these listener questions about account management in retirement. How to make money simple for someone in your life Peter Lazaroff joins me on the Hot Topic Segment. He recently wrote a fantastic book called Making Money Simple. Since graduation season is coming up, I highly recommend this book for any graduate. Many financial advisors and Wall Street bigwigs want you to think that saving money and building wealth is complicated, but that’s not true. It’s easy to make good choices with money if you can just get out of your own way. Peter teaches how to build a system that works around our human nature to complicate money choices. He shows that finding small sustainable habits that you can automate will lead to financial success. What do you do if you miss taking the RMD? One listener asks what would happen if you forget to take your required minimum distribution (RMD) one year. You really don’t want this to happen! The IRS imposes a 50% penalty on the amount you didn’t take. For instance, if you have an RMD of $20,000 but you only took $10,000 the penalty would be $5,000. The first thing you need to do if you miss your RMD is talk to a tax advisor. Then take the distribution as soon as you figure out your mistake. Do it alone and maintain records. You will need to file the form 5329 for the year in which there was a shortfall either with your tax return or separately. If you missed it multiple years then you need to file a form for each year. The IRS has grated redemptions from this so it is important to keep records and let them know why it happened and how it was remedied. Are there any options for tax-free growth investments if your income is a bit higher than the Roth income eligibility? One listener is looking for options on tax-free growth investments. Since he lives in Minnesota he feels that the 403B isn’t his best option because the state loves to tax retirement accounts. One option is a back door Roth IRA. The way to do this is to make a nondeductible contribution to an IRA and then immediately convert it to a Roth. Saving money in an HSA is a good option as well. When you save in an HSA this money is pretax. You can allow it to accumulate and even invest it. It comes out tax-free as well but it can only be used for medical expenses. However, if you keep a record of your expenses you can submit an expense for reimbursement several years later. One last option to ease the tax burden is to move to a different state in retirement. Basic retirement tax tips Start diversifying your balance sheet between taxable, tax-free, and tax-deferred accounts as early as you can. Dial in what it costs for you to live comfortably. You can better control your taxable income when you understand your costs. Consider delaying taking your pension (if you have one) to do Roth conversions. Consider taking distributions from tax-deferred accounts. Move to a lower tax state. Be charitable. Build your balance sheet in a way to give you options. Maximize how you withdraw money.
