We're tackling the challenge many of us face: managing deferred gains in our portfolios and figuring out the smartest ways to reduce the tax hit as we transition to retirement. Welcome to this episode of 20/20 Money! My guest on today's show is Peter Lazaroff, CFA, CFP®, Chief Investment Officer at Plancorp, host of The Long Term Investor podcast, and the author of the book Making Money Simple.   Peter joins me on the show to talk about an investment approach that has been around for a long time but is starting to become more prevalent for investors: direct indexing. We talk about what direct indexing is through an abridged story on the evolution of investment vehicles for investors, some of the considerations and tradeoffs, how a direct indexing approach can minimize a practice owner's tax bill in the year that they sell their practice, and why an index investor should be, at the very least, doing their own due diligence on a direct indexing advisory firm & manager to complement their already-sound investment philosophy.   As a reminder, you can get all the information discussed in today's conversation by visiting our website at integratedpwm.com and clicking on the Learning Center. Peter shares his insights on the importance of authenticity in the financial industry and the value of learning from mistakes. He opens up about his investing blunders, including the pitfalls of using leveraged ETFs and the challenges of managing individual stocks, despite his decorated career as a stock analyst. Peter discusses the importance of transparency with clients and his approach to sharing his financial journey, including his assets, liabilities, and spending habits, which he details on his website, https://peterlazaroff.com/ He stresses the need for realistic financial goals and the futility of aiming for perfection, advocating instead for a focus on minimizing mistakes and enjoying the journey rather than fixating solely on the destination. The conversation touches on the balance between risk and reward in investments, with Peter drawing analogies to horse racing to illustrate the unpredictability of the markets. He also reflects on the significance of finding happiness through experiences rather than merely accumulating wealth. C-Roc and Peter explore the unique challenges faced by entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of investing in oneself and one's business. Peter highlights that while financial advisors can help grow wealth and minimize taxes, the real key to creating substantial wealth often lies in having ownership of a successful venture. In this episode, Cameron Howe is joined by Peter Lazaroff, CIO of Plancorp and Brightplan, overseeing over $6 billion in assets under management for over 1,500 clients nationwide. Peter is also the author of the book "Making Money Simple," with a foreword by Sam Altman.   Portfolio Construction Philosophy [00:59]   There is no perfect one-size-fits-all portfolio. The perfect portfolio is the one an individual can stick with through market ups and downs. Plancorp's approach starts with an investment philosophy rooted in peer-reviewed academic research to avoid deviating from the established portfolio. The starting point is the total market portfolio, as that's the likely benchmark for most investors. Factors like liquidity needs, employment status (human capital), and risk tolerance inform deviations from the total market portfolio. Home country bias is common, with investors tending to overweight domestic holdings. Quantitative vs. Fundamental Approach [10:16]   Plancorp takes a more quantitative approach, focusing on factors with robust research backing and proven out-of-sample data across asset classes. They primarily use three or four factors like value, profitability, and in some cases, size and momentum. The goal is to implement robust factors while avoiding the "bad side effects" of implementing unsuccessful factors from data mining. Reducing Emotional Biases [28:45]   Clients, advisors, and portfolio managers all have inherent biases that must be accounted for. Techniques like red team/blue team debates, blind voting on portfolio metrics, and keeping investment committees small help reduce bias. Humility and viewing decisions through the lens of process rather than just outcomes is crucial. Advisors should be aware of biases introduced by marketing from asset managers. Key Takeaways   Don't overcomplicate investing; the simplest solutions are often best. Embrace an evidence-based, hypothesis-testing approach to portfolio decisions. Reducing behavioral biases requires processes that foster diverse perspectives and honest self-evaluation. An advisor's role is to help clients stick to their long-term investment plan and avoid costly mistakes driven by emotion. What financial mistakes could you have avoided? Most of us learned personal finance the hard way, by stumbling through life without training and learning from our mistakes. Unfortunately, most schools don't have a personal finance class that teaches students about budgeting, saving, or what the word "taxes" actually means. Peter Lazaroff is chief investment officer at Plancorp and a CFP® who shares our passion for personal financial literacy. He's here today (don't tell OG, he might get jealous) to share his first experiences with money AND how you can make money topics more simple for yourself and those around you. He also shares some of the golden personal finance basics we should all familiarize ourselves with, and dishes out resources to help us all further our own financial education. During our headline segment, we dive into ETFs. A seasoned firm is entering the game (better late than never!) of ETFs years after their competitors. We talk about active vs passive funds and the future of the ETF industry. We're also answering Dave's question about reward credit cards. Are they really as good as they sound? And of course, Doug will share his amazing trivia. Enjoy!

It might be automating your investments somehow through a robo-advisor, that might require you to hire an advisor. I think any of those options work as long as you have a plan and a system in place." - Daniel Lee In this episode of GET READY!, I spoke with Daniel Lee, a fiduciary financial planner who is the head of Plancorp’s San Francisco office about the benefits of having an investment plan. Quote: (1) “The rules are there are no rules” from Oscar Wilde Quote: (2) “Everyone has a plan until you get punched in the mouth.” – Mike Tyson….When it comes strictly to investing they would be different.   Top 3 Hot Points:What is a fiduciary promise? From Career to Financial Success. Financial Education for Freedom.   Making #Money Simple and Your #Financial #Success with @PeterLazaroff Tweet This   On This Episode You Will Hear:[00:30] Introduction [10:40] The ultimate efficiency enhancers you have to figure it out. But I’m with you. When I moved to Plancorp, about four and a half years ago, the biggest life-changing move I made was time-blocking. Nobody can touch my morning. My mornings are sacred. I put big blocks on my calendar. I said do not book meetings, and it allows me in, the best thing you can do is just try not to open an email. [20:00] I sit down and I write and I unload. I don’t always know what I’m going to write in advance. So I mentioned when I wrote 5000 words, I said, I wonder if I could turn this into a book. I just kept going and naturally, that part was really natural to me, because I write frequently now. [33:00] You can go get a lot of investment advice online for super cheap, the thing we do is we just make sure people don’t get killed on their taxes and get your tax projections. You do that through eliminating surprises in a simple tax projection as a business owner. You might find that you can accelerate income or expenses, or the salary you have. Stay below that net investment, income tax and all the planning work that goes into that. That’s a big reason to outsource that so you can focus on your business. [40:00] I come from parents of doctors, so maybe I’m biased. Generally, you go to a professional expert, you go to the attorney. Generally, if you go to someone, you should trust that the advice is not in anyone’s interest, but making your financial life better. [51:55] Final Words   Final Words:I think a lot of people just want to make sure they’re doing the right thing. Money can seem complicated but it just doesn’t have to be. Life is very complicated and you’re trying to find ways to simplify it. Don’t let it be something that you put to the side because it seems complicated. There’s a lot of great resources out there, not just my own that are helping simplify it. The internet has done wonderful things, podcasts like this have done wonderful things in making these issues more approachable. So I really encourage you to try to, if there’s something you’ve been putting off, like your finances. That one thing you can probably think of, go ahead and just do that take care of it now because the benefit from it will compound over time.   Influencers Mentioned:Roger Whitney, The Retirement Answer Man Podcast – rogerwhitney.com Book: Making Money Simple – https://amzn.to/2YK9MIM   Resources:smartmoneyquiz.com peterlazaroff.com Twitter: @PeterLazaroff Instagram: @PeterLazaroff linkedin.com/in/peterlazaroff facebook.com/Peters-Money-Tips-2633683283313176/   Watch On YouTube:[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCeKwyBMkfc] Action Steps:Submit an iTunes Review. Today our expert guest is Peter Lazaroff, chief investment officer at Plancorp which manages over $4 billion for its clients and author of the book Making Money Simple. He's here to share complex issues and make them manageable to just about anyone.   At a young age, Peter knew he had a future in investing. On his 12th birthday, he received a single Nike stock from his grandma. While it seemed disappointing at first, he was impressed by these $1 checks he received in the mail every quarter. He continued to receive stocks for companies he was familiar with each birthday up until age 18.   Peter had a great mentor, who taught him that he had to learn something new every day. He started taking notes at every meeting, and at one meeting he ended up being asked to send his notes to the president of his company, and then eventually he was sending them out to everyone in the company. He used his writing, which naturally led to his book   This was the book that Peter had in him, and he wrote it in the evenings, outlining his philosophy on building wealth, and the system he uses.   How do you make money simple? Try to focus on the endgame: What are your goals? The neural patterns in our brain view saving money the same as giving it away to someone you don't know. Find meaningful goals and prioritize them. Budget in reverse: automate your savings once you know what your financial goals are. If investment seems overwhelming, don't be afraid to hire a professional. They will find things that you might miss, but you will also be buying back time. Make sure you're asking an advisor the correction questions.   Getting your finances under control doesn't have to be difficult or overwhelming. Peter's best piece of advice is to just start. Small actions can make a big difference, so discover your financial goals and work backwards to start achieving them.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway   “The most important thing is to start now. There is something that everybody can do to improve their finances, even if it's small. One of the things we don't respect is the power of compounding. Small habits compound over time, and if you start today, I assure you there is something that can change the rest of your life in your finances.   There is probably something that you're thinking about that you've been putting off. Whatever that thing is, go home and block some time off on your calendar and do it.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster.
