Their church in Georgia had a profound impact on she and Jack's marriage and led them to seek deep, authentic gospel community when they returned to Auburn. She and Lee discuss how a first-generation mindset led her family to expect hard things when it comes to serving in a church plant and why that posture continues to matter in the life of our church. Kelly serves on the Grace Auburn staff team as our Communication and Media Coordinator and as an elder's wife. She has many years of experience in the marketing and communications world, and brings a wealth of experience and gifting to our team.

At this week's Round Table, Kenisha, Madeline, and Maya spoke with Alexa Whaley, Media Coordinator, for the Millennial Action Project (MAP) The Millennial Action Project has an audacious mission: activate young leaders to bridge the partisan divide and transform American politics. Its vision is of a diverse democracy where the political culture is grounded in empathy and leaders pursue innovative policy solutions. The Millennial Action Project works directly with our nation's leading young policymakers on both a national and state level to bridge the partisan divide and lead a new era of collaborative governance. Through her role, Alexa helps MAP amplify its message, perspective, and membership through digital media and press outlets. She passionately believes we all can and must come together around generational issues like climate change, housing, and criminal justice–and MAP is committed to serving as a conduit for doing so. Growing up in a Conservative Christian background and attending an evangelical college majoring in political science led Alexa to want to work in politics without forgetting roots or leaving communities she cares about behind. This made MAP a perfect match, enabling Alexa to use all parts of her tool kit and ideological background in working with lots of bridge builders who are passionate about not silencing the other side. We spoke about the ‘secret sauce' of how MAP works with young elected officials across divides; the role of the media and social media in creating divisiveness—and how MAP is trying to become a go-to resource for young people on how to navigate politics; why ours is the largest generation registering Independent; and the power of bringing one's full self to politics without having to hold to a party orthodoxy. Story of failure: Losing my composure during competition (and cursing). My name is Jeni Hopkins and I was a coach for 24 years and have loved every minute of it.  Yes, of course, there are a lot of highs and lows in coaching, but the rewards and the privilege of working with such outstanding student-athletes, assistant coaches, managers, athletic directors, athletic trainers, officials, table workers, and many more are what I valued the most.  The intangibles and intricacies of sports deserve to be explored and a voice needs to be given to coaches, players, officials, and others that play such vital roles in the arena of sports. This is about giving that voice.  I am also currently the Media Coordinator of the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association and have a lot of pride in the promotional mission and advocacy of that organization for coaches. I have been on their executive board for over 20 years. Check out our website at www.mobca.org.I am also a proud member, and president, of the board of directors of the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame.  This is a non-profit organization that recognizes excellence in sports and in turn raises funds for youth sports. Our website is www.springfieldhof.com.Another adventure is that I am a color analyst for Mediacom and MSHSAA.tv and am thrilled to work with them during basketball season while getting a front row seat to the best basketball! I have also worked games, both play by play and color analyst, for Evangel University, Southwest Baptist University and Drury University.  I also broadcast the Norm Stewart Classic on ESPN3 from Mizzou Arena. I love broadcasting basketball and have also enjoyed bringing volleyball and track and field to the air waves, too.I also am the founder and director of a basketball luncheon every two weeks, Court Talk, during basketball season.  This luncheon promotes basketball in Springfield and includes all of the city high school and college coaches, plus Southwest Baptist and College of the Ozarks. For more information, click here. 'I am also the founder and director of CHAMPS (Champion Humans and Mentoring Partnerships for Success), a mentoring program for seniors in high school.  For more information, click here.I am currently the Interim Assistant Director at Greenwood Laboratory School, my Alma Mater. I love those Bluejays!I am also a Sports Counselor and have been for multiple years.  I love assisting athletes with the mental side of their game!My favorite role is with my FAMILY.  My husband of over two and a half decades is Scott Hopkins. Our guest today on the Outdoor Adventure Series is Vernon SmithVernon provides communications leadership for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, whose mission is to conserve and protect special places in the ocean. The National Marine Sanctuaries, are celebrating 50 Years of ocean conservation and stewardship, and the Office serves as the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 620,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters from Washington state to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huron to American Samoa. The network includes a system of 15 national marine sanctuaries and Papahānaumokuākea and Rose Atoll marine national monuments.Aha MomentI had an opportunity to join some of the researchers at Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary off of Boston as they were out in the sanctuary doing some humpback whale research. One of the most humbling things that I've ever experienced happened when a Humpback and its Calf approached our research vessel. It came right alongside it and looked at us. And, you know, when you're looking at this calf, which itself was at least 30-40 feet long, and It's just a Calf, and you're looking at this creature and you're thinking, oh my God, you know, this is just so amazing. And to think that I have an opportunity to improve the condition, to try to help this whale and its calf continue to thrive that is so humbling and that's what makes you know, the work that we do so rewarding.Insight2GoIf you can find work that speaks to your passion, it really doesn't feel like work. Now let's be honest, working in government has its ups and downs. There's the bureaucracy part of government that I don't like, but I feel like I'm very, very lucky because I really enjoyed my career as a journalist. I'm having a lot of fun working as a communications coordinator for NOAA and the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.I've been lucky in that I've been able to use many of the same skills that I had in my journalism career, reporting writing, and editing. Those skills were transferable to my current job. And I think that people should know, who are contemplating a career change, it's probably a good idea to do some sort of a personal skills assessment, and just sort of see, what skills you have that are potentially transferable in another arena.Next StepsTo learn more about the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, visit their website at https://sanctuaries.noaa.gov/You can also learn more about The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries on these social sites:Facebook https://www.facebook.com/NOAAOfficeofNationalMarineSanctuariesInstagram https://www.instagram.com/noaasanctuaries/YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/sanctuariesThe Outdoor Adventure Series is a Podcast Production of Fox Coaching, Inc.
