Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: John Green & Grassroots Activists Pressure Danaher To Drop Price of Tuberculosis Test, published by Gemma Paterson on September 12, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Really great piece from Good Good Good on the campaign to pressure Danaher to reduce the price of their TB test. Excited to see the outcome! Tuberculosis is the world's deadliest disease - and it is entirely curable. The airborne disease has plagued human history, and the World Health Organization estimates that 10 million people across the globe are infected by TB every year. Of those millions, 1.6 million still die each year, despite the existence of life-saving technology and medicine. These are facts that enrage many - but especially author and philanthropist John Green. "Why am I passionate about TB? It's the deadliest disease in human history, but for most of human history we couldn't do much about it. However, since the mid-1950s, TB has been curable - yet we still allow TB to kill over 1.6 million people per year," Green told Good Good Good. "This is horrifying to me. I don't want to accept a world where we know how to cure Tuberculosis but deny millions of people access to that cure." This passion was put on display in July of this year. Through the social media campaign #PatientsNotPatents, Green and his fanbase - called Nerdfighters, or Nerdfighteria in collective form - followed the lead of TB advocates to call on drug company Johnson & Johnson to allow the sale of generic bedaquiline - a life-saving TB drug that had been inaccessible under the company's patent for over a decade. Nerdfighteria - as well as longtime TB organizations such as the Stop TB Partnership and TB-survivors Phumeza Tisile and Nandita Venkatesan - was successful, and Johnson & Johnson ended its reign on bedaquiline (though advocates are still working to ensure that all low- and middle-income countries receive access to the generic drug). To end the TB epidemic by 2030 - a goal shared by both the WHO and the United Nations - more pharmaceutical companies need to do their part to make healthcare more accessible, especially in countries with a high TB burden. So, in their effort to end TB, Nerdfighteria has taken on a new company: Danaher. The Issue Danaher is a multinational corporation, founded by brothers Steven and Mitchell Rales, that owns a number of other large companies, such as Cepheid, Pantone, and X-Rite. (Steven Rales also founded Indian Paintbrush Films, which has financed many of Wes Anderson's movies.) Most relevant to this campaign, however, is that in 2006, Danaher and molecular diagnostics company Cepheid created the most helpful diagnostic resource for TB: The GeneXpert machine. This rapid molecular testing machine is able to test for a number of infectious diseases, including COVID, HIV, TB, and multidrug-resistant TB. In fact, the WHO recommends Xpert tests as the initial test for all people with signs and symptoms of TB. The GeneXpert machine itself is cost-effective, but its testing cartridges are more costly. The company charges about $10 per regular TB testing cartridge and about $15 per multidrug-resistant TB testing cartridge (though both tests cost the same to manufacture). According to a 2019 brief from Doctors Without Borders, Danaher and Cepheid could reduce the cost of these cartridges to just $5 each - or lower - based on continuous increases in volume. The brief said a "20-30% reduction in price may be overdue" thanks to expansion in volume. "These pricing packages serve to expand Cepheid's footprint . and do nothing to address the urgent need to scale up affordable testing for COVID-19, TB, and other diseases, or to address the longstanding lack of affordability and unfair pricing of Xpert tests," David Branigan, of activist organization Treatment Action Group, said in a statement in 2...

Facing Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt, Báez doubled off the left-field wall with one out in the second inning. It was Báez’s first extra-base hit of the season, but he didn’t run hard out of the box, apparently thinking he had homered. Báez broke for third and rounded the base on Akil Baddo’s liner to center, and was easily doubled off to end the inning. It was the regular-season finale for both teams. Point joined Steven Stamkos and Vincent Lecavalier as the only Lightnning players to reach the 50-goal mark. Alex Killorn, Brandon Hagel and Michael Eyssimont also scored for the playoff-bound Lightning. Toews won three Stanley Cup titles in 15 seasons with Chicago, but general manager Kyle Davidson announced earlier in the day that the team would not re-sign its longtime captain. Toews turns 35 on April 29, and the lowly Blackhawks are rebuilding. Toews had a chance to win the game in overtime, but he was denied by Felix Sandstrom on a breakaway with about 2:15 remaining. Provorov then closed it out for Philadelphia, beating Alex Stalock for his 6th goal of the season. NHL – Blackhawks say Toews will not return to team next season Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews will not return to the team next year, ending a wildly successful run that included three Stanley Cup championships in 15 seasons. General manager Kyle Davidson says the team will not re-sign its longtime center, who turns 35 on April 29. Toews was selected by Chicago with the No. 3 pick in the 2006 draft. He was just 20 years old when he became the 34th captain in team history in July 2008. Toews could decide to retire after missing a chunk of this season with what he described as symptoms of long COVID-19 and chronic immune response syndrome. He’s got big-man height and elite guard skills and will be the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. But because he isn’t officially in the draft yet, teams can’t discuss him publicly. So they don’t. And they don’t have to, either. Everyone knows what the teams who’ll be in the NBA lottery next month are hoping to have happen. They want the No. 1 pick and the right to select Wembanyama.  The Detroit Pistons have the best odds to win the number one pick. NFL – AP sources: Snyder agrees to $6.05B sale of NFL’s Commanders Two people with knowledge of the situation tell The Associated Press that a group led by Josh Harris and Mitchell Rales and including Magic Johnson has an agreement in principle to buy the Washington Commanders from longtime owner Dan Snyder. Harris and Rales are set to pay $6.05 billion for the storied NFL franchise. It’s the most money a professional sports franchise in North American has been sold for, topping the $4.65 billion paid by Walmart heir Rob Walton’s group for the Denver Broncos last year. The sale of the Commanders is pending approval from the rest of the league’s owners. That could happen as soon as their next meeting in Minnesota in May. NFL – First QB helmet designed to help reduce concussions approved The first quarterback-specific helmet designed to help reduce concussions has been approved for use by the NFL and NFLPA, the AP has learned. The helmet, manufactured by Vicis, reduces severity of helmet-to-ground impacts, which league data says account for approximately half of quarterback concussions, including the one suffered by Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa last season when his head slammed violently against the turf during a Thursday night game against Cincinnati. The helmet performed 7% better than the most popular helmet worn by quarterbacks last season, the league said in a memo sent to team executives on Thursday. Golf – PGA – Hovland leads RBC Heritage; Masters champ Rahm struggles Viktor Hovland shot a 7-under 64 to take the first-round lead at the rain-delayed RBC Heritage. Masters champion Jon Rahm was eight shots back after a frustrating 1-over 72 and acknowledged the fatigue from his win at Augusta National affected him. Hovland also shared the first-round lead at the Masters and finished tied for seventh. He led Brian Harman by one shot at Harbour Town. Aaron Rai and Jimmy Walker were also 6 under but did not finish their rounds before darkness halted play. The RBC Heritage is a designated event on the PGA Tour this year, giving it a $20 million purse and a strong field. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Tampa Bay Lightning 5, Detroit Red Wings 0 Philadelphia Flyers 5, Chicago Blackhawks 4 – OT End Regular Season for Detroit and Chicago Lightning 5, Red Wings 0 – Point gets 50th, 51st goals, Lightning beat Red Wings 5-0 Brayden Point scored his 50th and 51st goals, backup Brian Elliott made 32 saves, and the Tampa Bay Lightning stopped a four-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings, despite ending the season 0-4-1, finished with their most points since their last playoff team in 2015-16. Flyers 4, Blackhawks 3 – OT – Toews, Blackhawks lose 5-4 to Flyers in finale Jonathan Toews scored in his final game with the Chicago Blackhawks, but Ivan Provorov scored 3:09 into overtime to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-4 victory in the season finale for each team. Zach McKinstry drove in the go-ahead run and Jake Rogers had two hits and an RBI as Detroit snapped a six-game skid. Turnbull allowed one run on six hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch removed Báez from the game in the third, one inning after Báez appeared to lose track of the outs and ran into a double play. Chris Bassitt took the loss for the Blue Jays, allowing two runs in six innings. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Tampa Bay Lightning 5, Detroit Red Wings 0 Philadelphia Flyers 5, Chicago Blackhawks 4 – OT End Regular Season for Detroit and Chicago Lightning 5, Red Wings 0 – Point gets 50th, 51st goals, Lightning beat Red Wings 5-0 Brayden Point scored his 50th and 51st goals, backup Brian Elliott made 32 saves, and the Tampa Bay Lightning stopped a four-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings. NBA – National Basketball Association Tonight NBA Play In Tournament Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat, 7:00 p.m. Oklahoma City Thunder at Minnesota Timberwolves 9:30 p.m. NBA – The losing is done, NBA teams now await 7-foot-3 Wembanyama There are very specific rules that NBA teams must follow right now when it comes to mentioning the name of 7-foot-3 French star Victor Wembanyama. Boston Marathon – Survival diaries: Decade on, Boston Marathon bombing echoes In the decade since the Boston Marathon bombing, the streets and sidewalks have been repaired, and memorials stand at the site of the explosions to remember the three who died. But the healing continues. And, for many, the race itself is an important part. Bombing survivors with no previous interest in distance running made it a bucket-list goal. For others, friends and family entered on their behalf. Doctors and first responders and others affected by the attacks on April 15, 2013, have also been drawn back to the race on the Massachusetts holiday of Patriots’ Day. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Tampa Bay Lightning 5, Detroit Red Wings 0 Philadelphia Flyers 5, Chicago Blackhawks 4 – OT End Regular Season for Detroit and Chicago Lightning 5, Red Wings 0 – Point gets 50th, 51st goals, Lightning beat Red Wings 5-0 Brayden Point scored his 50th and 51st goals, backup Brian Elliott made 32 saves, and the Tampa Bay Lightning stopped a four-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings. The 127th Boston Marathon is Monday. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Detroit Red Wings 7, Pittsburgh Penguins 4 Dallas Stars 4, Chicago Blackhawks 1 Red Wings 7, Penguins 4 – Perron’s 3rd-period hat trick lifts Red Wings past Penguins David Perron had a hat trick in the third period and the Detroit Red Wings overcame the ejection of coach Derek Lalonde to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 7-4. Perron posted his ninth career three-goal game. He scored on a wrist shot early in the third, put Detroit ahead 5-4 on the power play with 3:40 left and added his 19th goal of the season 45 seconds later. Lalonde was assessed a game misconduct during the second period. He profanely argued after unsuccessfully challenging Pittsburgh's third goal on a claim of goalie interference. Detroit squandered an early three-goal lead and won for just the fourth time in 16 games. Stars 4, Blackhawks 1 – Stars get goals from 4 players, beat skidding Blackhawks 4-1 Tyler Seguin, Colin Miller, Joe Pavelski and Luke Glendening scored as the Dallas Stars topped the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1. Dallas improved to 94 points and climbed into a second-place tie with idle Colorado in the tight Central Division. First-place Minnesota has 95 points. Jake Oettinger lost a bid for his fifth shutout when Tyler Johnson popped in a loose rebound at 10:33 of the third period. Oettinger made 17 saves. He was only lightly tested as Dallas dominated for most of the game and outshot the last-place Blackhawks 33-18 in handing them their sixth straight loss. NHL – Blackhawks’ Toews returns to ice, hints at retirement Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews returned to the ice while also hinting his NHL career could be winding down. Toews skated with his teammates before their game against the Dallas Stars. It was his first time practicing with the Blackhawks since his most recent game in Edmonton in late January. He made a statement through the team in February saying he'd be stepping away because of the effects of Chronic Immune Response Syndrome and “long COVID.” In his first public comments since, Toews stopped short of saying he hoped to play in any of last-place Chicago's nine remaining games. NHL – Predators motivated to bring joy to Nashville after shooting Predators defenseman Ryan McDonagh and his teammates were motivated to do more than just beat the Boston Bruins in their NHL game Tuesday night. The Predators wanted to bring a brief bit of joy to the city of Nashville a day after a fatal grade school shooting that left six dead, including three children. McDonagh said it wasn't just another game as the Predators beat the NHL-leading Bruins 2-1. “Quite frankly there are really no words that you can say after what went on yesterday in Nashville,” he said. “Just a tragedy for those families and everybody affected. You don't really realize it until you have kids of your own and the perspective. It hits you.” NBA – National Basketball Association Tonight Milwaukee Bucks at Indiana Pacers, 7:00 p.m. Detroit Pistons at Oklahoma City Thunder, 8:00 p.m. Los Angeles Lakers at Chicago Bulls, 8:00 p.m. MLB – Major League Baseball – Spring Training Yesterday Chicago Cubs 8, Chicago White Sox 5 End Spring Training Thursday 2023 Opening Day Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs, 2:20 p.m. Detroit Tigers at Tampa Bay Rays, 3:10 p.m.  WSJM 2:45 Chicago White Sox at Houston Astros, 7:00 p.m. MLB – MLB free agent watch: Ohtani leads possible 2023-24 class Shohei Ohtani watch is on. Not Ohtani's home runs or strikeouts or any of his magnificent numbers from the field. Nothing like that. It's all about how much his next contract will be worth. Ohtani is among a group of players going into their final season before they are eligible for free agency. There is still time for signatures and press conferences before opening day, but history shows a new contract becomes less likely once the real games begin. The list of impending free agents also includes Aaron Nola, Matt Chapman, Teoscar Hernández, Ian Happ and Julio Urías. NFL – AP sources: Two groups formally submit bids for Commanders Dan Snyder's departure from the NFL is moving closer to reality. A group led by Josh Harris and Mitchell Rales and another group led by Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos have submitted fully financed bids for the NFL's Washington Commanders, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Two people confirmed the bid from Harris. Both spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because details of the bid have not been publicly announced. The Harris/Rales group includes basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta also has been in the running. Snyder had yet to accept an offer when the league's finance committee met Monday so his future wasn't openly discussed. NFL – Goodell: Commanders report to be released even if team sold Embattled Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder could very well sell the franchise before an investigation into his organization's conduct can be complete. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said even if that's the case, any report will be made public. Goodell said Tuesday at the league’s annual meetings that the NFL is “committed to releasing the findings.” Snyder and the Commanders are still under investigation by former U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White. She was retained by the league to look into various aspects of the organization stemming from a congressional review into workplace misconduct. The review also included a referral to the Federal Trade Commission for potential business improprieties. NFL – Analysis: Ravens are Lamar Jackson’s best, only option Lamar Jackson's frustration over contract negotiations reached a boiling point when he announced Monday that he has requested a trade from the Baltimore Ravens. Staying in Baltimore might be his best and only option. If the two sides can't agree on a long-term deal by July 17, Jackson could play this season on the $32.4 million franchise tag. The 2019 NFL MVP hasn't generated any interest in free agency after the Ravens placed the nonexclusive franchise tag on him. Some teams immediately said they wouldn't pursue Jackson. The Washington Commanders joined that list Monday. Olympics – Lawmakers back Paris Olympic law despite surveillance fears A proposed French law for the 2024 Paris Olympics that critics contend will open the door for privacy-busting video surveillance technology in Europe has passed an important hurdle. French lawmakers voted 400 to 93 on Tuesday for a bill that would legalize the temporary use of so-called intelligent surveillance systems to safeguard the Paris Games and Paralympics. The systems combine cameras with artificial intelligence software to flag potential security concerns like abandoned packages. Watchdog groups argue that France would violate international law by becoming the first European Union country to legalize AI-powered surveillance. Supporters argue the technology could help avert disasters like the crowd crush that killed nearly 160 people celebrating Halloween in South Korea. Olympics – IOC details advice to let Russia, Belarus athletes return Some Russian athletes can soon return to international sports, although their status for the Paris Olympics is still up in the air. The International Olympic Committee has recommended that individual athletes from Russia and Belarus should be allowed to return to competition under a neutral status as long as they have no military links. But the IOC held off on deciding whether they can compete at next year's Paris Olympics. While the IOC said Russia and Belarus should remain barred from team sports such as soccer and basketball, it still defied repeated calls by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to exclude all Russian athletes while his country is being occupied and attacked. AHL – American Hockey League Tonight Chicago Wolves at Grand Rapids Griffins, 7:00 p.m. MCCAA – Junior College Athletics Today Women's Softball Jackson College 3, Lake Michigan College 0 – Game 1 Jackson College 13, Lake Michigan College 3 – Game 2 MHSAA – Buchanan’s Faith Carson wins Michigan AP D3 POY honors Buchanan's Faith Carson has been named the Michigan Associated Press Division 3 Player of the Year. JP Finlay, Mitch Tischler and Pete Hailey devote the bulk of their time toward previewing free agency for Washington, but they begin by discussing Mitchell Rales, who's a new name to know in the club's ownership situation. After covering Rales, the guys then each identify the one soon-to-be Commanders free agent that they believe the team should bring back before then looking outside for an external player the franchise ought to sign, too. From there, you'll hear JP and Brian Mitchell's interview with Andy Reid (which was originally recorded on the BMitch & Finlay radio show) where Reid hypes up Eric Bieniemy's coaching style and potential impact on his new employer. If you like podcasts where Mitch asserts himself but scares Pete while doing so and JP's optimism over a Daron Payne extension increases, then this is the episode for you.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
