My Darling Clementine starring Peter FondaAnother presentation of The Lux Radio Theater, this adaptation aired on April 28, 1947.
In episode seven of our Visionary Remakes season, we traverse two classic westerns. First, Kurosawa's Yojimbo (1961) and its nearly immediate Italian reaction, Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars (1964).The western has always been seen as a distinctly American film genre. The "west" in the word is the American West, a grand nearly ungovernable stretch of land filled with plains, deserts, mountains, rivers, and precarious cliffs, both literal and moral. It is a rich canvas that can tell a thousand different stories. Ironically, here we have two non-American voices calling out to the vast wilderness of the West. Perhaps it is a wild and mysterious place that exists in all cultures. Kurosawa's Yojimbo is not necessarily a textbook Western, but of course, it is deeply indebted to Shane (1953), High Noon (1952), The Gunfighter (1950), and John Ford's Stagecoach (1939) and My Darling Clementine (1946). At the same time, the source material was a hardboiled detective American novel from the 1930s, and we can not discount its place in the lineage of the chanbara films. Yojimbo is an amalgamation and many different styles and genres, but it still feels like a Western at its core.A Fistful of Dollars is resolutely a Western, but it came from somewhere left of the dial. Sergio Leone did not speak English nor had he ever been to America, let alone the American West. But Leone was able to spark something new and powerful in the waning genre. Westerns had been around since the beginning of film, but by the 1950s and 1960s, the genre had oversaturated culture mostly through dime-store tv shows: Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger, Bonanza, and Rawhide. Westerns had become trite and tired. Along came Clint Eastwood, Sergio Leone, and Ennio Morricone to reinvent and rekindle that flickering flame.
John Ford serves up a classic Western story telling the events of Tombstone Arizona and the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Unlike more modern depictions, My Darling Clementine is a much more soft-spoken and melancholy movie, less about the lawlessness and debauchery and more about the casualties of a modernizing West. When discussing the history of the Western genre, there is no escaping the name or work of John Ford, so today Alex and Jonathan dive in to three of Ford's landmark films: My Darling Clementine (1946), The Searchers (1956), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). We talk about the ways Western films elevate actual historical events to the level of mythology, the themes and tropes that are presented and deconstructed through Ford's films, and how Ford uses film to pull back the mythological curtain of his own early films in the genre. My Darling Clementine is considered the greatest Wyatt Earp film of all time. It also just so happens to be the least accurate, despite legendary director John Ford having known Wyatt personally. Contrary to popular belief – and Ford's own claims - this film was NOT based on Earp's own account of his days in Tombstone, but rather an earlier film whose director also knew the now famous lawman. I say now famous because Wyatt wasn't exactly what you would call a household name prior to the 20th century. His time in Dodge City - as well as his actions in Tombstone - certainly garnered Earp a reputation in certain circles. However, his introduction to the nation at large wouldn't be as a lawman at all, but rather as the corrupt boxing referee who threw the fight for heavyweight champion of the world; a fiasco that saw Wyatt turn to Hollywood in an effort to redeem his sullied reputation. We're finally at one of our favorite times of the year. A season finale episode! Bad movie review! Well according to Ebert at least as we discuss a now Carpenter Classic and Apocalypse Trilogy member Prince of Darkness. Then we give out "silly" and "serious" awards for the movies we discussed in this last season of the show including The Maltese Falcon, Manhattan, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Metropolis, Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, My Darling Clementine, Vivre Sa Vie, Nashville, and Network.
The gunfight at the O.K. Corral – a 30-second shootout between lawmen and outlaws – occurred on October 26, 1881, in the small US mining town of Tombstone. When the smoke cleared, three people lay dead. The gunfight might have remained little more than a minor footnote in the history of the Old West, except that it came to be romanticised, dramatised and exaggerated by countless books and movies over the years to come. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why the line between lawman and outlaw was more than a little murky in the Old West; look into why so many people had flooded to the small down of Tombstone in the first place; and discuss how the whole shootout could have been avoided if only someone hadn't stolen someone else's mule... POP ART, WHERE I FIND THE POP CULTURE IN ART AND THE ART IN POP CULTURE: HIT AND MYTH “I'm you're huckleberry.” In John Ford's movie The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, we have the famous line, “This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” Sounds like it's time for Episode 72 of Pop Art, the podcast where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. On Pop Art, my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. This time, I am happy to welcome back as my guest film enthusiast and fellow podcaster Todd Liebenow, who has chosen as his selection the epic 1990s version of Wyatt Earp, the widescreen Tombstone, while I have chosen the John Ford classic, My Darling Clementine, both about the mythical figure of the Earp brothers and the gunfight at the OK Corral. And in this episode, we'll ask the questions: Where did the gunfight at the OK Corral take place? What is it about westerns, anyway? Who directed Tombstone? Are you sure? Whose favorite movie is My Darling Clementine? Who is Kevin Jarre's famous step-father? What did director John Ford think of My Darling Clementine? Who does the term “cowboy” refer to? What is a Mae Marsh and would you want to be one? Why does Robert Mitchum do the voiceover? Tim and Matt have shown previous interest in naming the “Most” of various things - most 00's, 90's, and 80's songs, for example. The things that best embody and symbolize an era or genre or concept. Tim returns that thought experiment here with three movies that are the Most their respective directors. North by Northwest has all the Hitchcock you know and expect, while Moby Dick and My Darling Clementine distill John Huston and John Ford, respectively, as much as they tell actual stories. But which Auteur is truest to themselves? Tell us which option you would have chose, vote in our poll below!

Ever since Marshall Craig was taken from us on December 18, 2020, his mother Carla Craig has worked tirelessly with his friends and loved ones to ensure his memory lives on. So far, this has lead to his massive book collection being donated to the library at his Alumni, The California University Of Pennsylvania, a bench installed at a park where he loved to see the sunset, and the beginnings of a charity called Marshall's Revolution. This is a year long miniseries designed by The Pop Break Staff Writer Sam Niles to progress his memory by having some discussions about movies in Marshall's collection. Marshall has an incredible collection and could talk for hours about film, so some of his friends got together and made a podcast to invite guests with both a passion and knowledge for film to discuss selections from his collection once a month. On this first episode, Sam discusses the John Ford masterpiece My Darling Clementine with guest Joe Galm. Joe is a great friend, and a great guy, and he has been particularly supportive since Marshall's passing. He stopped being a film critic a while back, but he's the perfect guest given his support during this hard time, and his continued love for and knowledge of film.
Welcome back, listeners! We've decided our first series back from our break will be on the Western genre. More specifically, we're looking at how the genre evolved over the years. To kick things off, we're discussing John Ford's 1946 masterpiece, My Darling Clementine. One of the most archetypal of all Classical Westerns, My Darling Clementine covers one of the enduring legends of the old West: the gunfight at the OK Corral, and the conflict leading up to it. While later depictions of the event and characters would hew closer to the historical record, Ford took as his focus the myth itself, and conjured up a film of peerless beauty, a kind of utopian dream of the Old West. Ford was more responsible than anyone in establishing the basic conventions of the Western genre, and My Darling Clementine was, perhaps alongside Stagecoach, the film most instrumental in that process. He later began exploring the West with a more skeptical eye, but this is the Western in its foundational moment, where larger-than-life heroes befit the legends told about them, and where frontier life is depicted with boundless poetry.
In Episode 11 the crew discusses John Ford's My Darling Clementine. The first in the three part series on films about Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday and the gunfight at the OK Corral.
Americana, Roots, Country , Folk & Acoustic music.New and Classic Tracks. Episode includes music by Alison Moorer, My Darling Clementine, Nick Lowe , Linda Ronstadt and Roseanne Reid.
“My Darling Clementine” is John Ford's retelling of the Earp/Clanton fued, and the famous show down at the OK Corral. Ford embellishes on the story by centering the plot on the fictional character Clementine (Doc Holliday's schoolteacher flame from back east). The gunfight at the OK Corral is as close as you can get to an epic legend when studying the frontier and American west.Join co-hosts Elysabeth Gwendolyn Belle and Robert Meyer Burnett as they take aim at this classic John Ford western starring Henry Fonda, Linda Darnell and Victor Mature.
Sonatina, opus 100 Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) I. Allegro risoluto II. Larghetto III. Scherzo IV. Finale Dvorak wrote this Sonatina for his teenaged son and daughter while living in America with his family for three years in the 1890s to study American folk music, with a goal of helping to create an American style of classical music. During his summers in the Czech-speaking prairie town of Spillville, Iowa, he composed four concert works on American themes: the symphony "From the New World," the "American" string quartet, the Cello Concerto, and this Sonatina. It opens with a quote from a Gold Rush song, "My Darling Clementine". The second movement is based on Native American chants and dances the family heard on a visit to Minnehaha Falls. The Scherzo suggests city park carousel music. The Finale, though a polka, is in the spirit of another rural hoe-down. This adaptation for oboe and piano was arranged by Dolci to fit within the range of an oboe and the respirational needs of an oboist.
This week's guest is Jordan Vogeney. We talk westerns. This week's films are: My Darling Clementine, The Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Blazing Saddles, and Unforgiven. Dial F for Film is a podcast about the love of movies and host's -- J. Carlos Menjivar -- attempt to watch 1001 movies before he dies. A lover of lists and film, Carlos is a firm believer that all film lists should be tackled with one goal in mind: completion. Steven Jay Schneider's "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" is the subject of this podcast. Each episode features one guest and five movies from the massive list, compiled into themed lists by the host. Guests each week will select one category without any prior knowledge as to what films are included. Once a category is chosen, Carlos reveals the five films and the viewing begins. The guests then come on Dial F for Film via Zoom and the discussion begins.

Klassische Western sind nichts für dich? Diese Grundhaltung sollte man erst in Zement gießen, wenn man einen der großen Vertreter des Genres von John Ford gesehen hat. My Darling Clementine zum Beispiel.

"My Darling Clementine," tells the fictionalized story of Wyatt Earp becoming the marshal of Tombstone, Arizona, in 1882. This is the radio adaptation of the film, and stars the same cast. It was broadcast on April 28, 1947.
Our journey into the filmography of John Ford continues with more westerns! Have Dave and Mike seen too many versions of Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp? Or will this shoot to the top, right past Tombstone? MY DARLING CLEMENTINE is the latest foray into that well known story, so we'll see if Mr. Fonda brings something new.Afterwards, we talk about SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON and decide if John Wayne can carry a John Ford movie as the main character. This one combines some serious subject matter with comedy and there is some definite disagreement between our two hosts!Rent MY DARLING CLEMENTINE on Amazon Rent SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON on AmazonThis episode also features Paul Ponte of The Screen Watcher's Guild as our John Ford expert. In the end of his career, John Ford made one more powerhouse movie by teaming up two of the greatest actors of the generation. Neither John Wayne or Jimmy Stewart play Liberty Valance, but maybe one of them was the man who shot him. The guys dive into what Ford is saying about his western legacy, the end of an era and the myth of morality. But it wouldn't be a successful take on a team-up if they didn't have a team-up of their own. Enter...Eric's dad, Ray Martindale! We got The Duke! John Wayne teams up with John Ford again for their most complicated western. In The Searchers, Wayne plays a racist Confederate soldier who spends years looking for his taken niece. The guys discuss Ford's exciting use of color, his take on the bigoted character and what the ending means for the family. Time to head to Tombstone. John Ford's My Darling Clementine tells the tale of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday and the infamous OK Corral. Unlike the goal oriented films of the last two movies, this is a remarkable film about society slowing entering a lawless city. The guys look at how Ford treats this different type of story, the morality of its heroes and the remarkable influence this movie had on future westerns. Get your water bottle filled because we're off to the Dust Bowl! I know there are so many Dust Bowl movies and TV shows that air every week, but let's look back at the first one, The Grapes of Wrath. John Ford adapted this acclaimed John Steinbeck novel with one of the best actors of his generation, Henry Fonda. But is it any good? In this episode, the Director's Club delves into the Green Valleys, Stagecoaches, and Long Voyages shown in the works of the legendary director John Ford. With the help of fellow Chicago Film Discussion Group member Peter Richards (who guested on our Terence Malick episode), in Part I of our series we not only look into his classic early films, but lesser-known yet no less fascinating efforts which include silent epics, minimalist treks through the desert, dark foggy nights of the Irish soul, and even comedies starring Will Rogers, and how Ford's genius with a film image and concerns of family, history, and myth flow through them. 16:56 "The Iron Horse" ("Mystery Train", Elvis Presley) 28:22 "Pilgrimage" ("Pilgramage", R.E.M.) 38:39 "The Lost Patrol" ("Desert Blues", The Allman Brothers Band) 52:35 "Judge Priest" ("Funky Judge", The J. Cavalcade of America is an anthology drama series that was sponsored by the DuPont Company. It was initially broadcast on radio from 1935 to 1953, and later on television from 1952 to 1957. Originally on CBS the series pioneered the use of anthology drama for company audio advertising. Cavalcade of America documented historical events using stories of individual courage, initiative and achievement, often with feel-good dramatizations of the human spirit's triumph against all odds. This was consistent with DuPont's overall conservative philosophy and legacy as an American company dating back to 1802. The company's motto, "Maker of better things for better living through chemistry," was read at the beginning of each program, and the dramas emphasized humanitarian progress, particularly improvements in the lives of women, often through technological innovation. The show started as part of a successful campaign to reinvigorate DuPont. In the early 1930s, the Nye Committee investigations concluded that DuPont had made a fortune profiteering in World War I. The company stood accused of encouraging an arms race between WWI enemies, after being heavily subsidized by the Allies to increase black powder production. The negative effects of the investigation left the company demoralized, directionless and with a tarnished corporate image in the middle of the Great Depression. DuPont's products were primarily not for public consumption, so there was no purpose in promoting them through advertising. As a solution to DuPont's troubles, Roy Durstine, then creative director of Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn, proposed the creation of Cavalcade of America using the company motto. This was to be an important element in the successful re-branding of DuPont as an American legacy engaged in making products for the well-being of Americans and humanity in general. THIS EPISODE: "Kansas Marshall" from Cavalcade Of America aired March 31, 1947 starring Henry Fonda. The story of Wyatt Earp, Marshall of Wichita Kansas, a town that needed cleaning up. The script was based on the 1939 film, Frontier Marshal, and remade by John Ford as "My Darling Clementine" in 1946. This radio version is one you will definitely enjoy!
