Author of three massive iterations on SK_eleven since the drop of his debut instalment on the label in 2021, New York DJ and producer Holden Federico aka 90s Techno Redux undoubtedly counts as one of the North-American scene's most exciting talents. Herald of a style both elegantly timeless and straight out propulsive, Holden turns in a textbook example of his adroitly combined sense of selection and mixing. Prepare for two hours of frantic uptempo assault and minutely designed tech-scapes, where no-nonsense big room firepower collides with stripped-down brutalism and an elevated touch of post-industrial sophistication. Going hard.

Podcast Overview: Moby & Will discuss his 30 years in the industry, where young creatives go nowadays, not focussing on selling out DJ tours & his journey with his mental health. Who is Moby: Richard Melville Hall, 11 September 1965, New York, USA. A New York DJ, recording artist, Christian, vegan and Philosophy graduate. Moby is so nicknamed because of the fact that he can trace his ancestry to the author of the famous whaling tale. This is by no means the only interesting aspect of his idiosyncratic artistic life. He refuses to travel anywhere by car because of the environmental considerations, and generally displays little of the public anonymity that is the creed of the underground DJ. In 1991, he took the Twin Peaks theme, under the guise of "Go", into the UK Top 10. Although that appealed to the more perverse natures of both mainstream and club audiences, the release of "I Feel It"/"Thousand" in 1993 was yet more bizarre. The latter track was classified by The Guinness Book Of Records as the fastest single ever, climaxing at 1,015 bpm. It was typical of Moby's playful, irreverent attitude to his work. In his youth he was a member of hardcore punk outfit the Vatican Commandos, and even substituted as singer for Flipper while their vocalist was in prison. He has brought these rock 'n' roll inclinations to bear on the world of dance music: at the 1992 DMC/Mixmag Awards ceremony he trashed his keyboards at the end of his set. His introduction to dance music began in the mid-80s: "I was drawn to it, I started reading about it, started hanging out in clubs. For me house music was the synthesis of the punk era." He collected cheap, second hand recording equipment, basing himself in an old factory/converted prison in New York's Little Italy district. The albums issued by New York dance label Instinct collect the artist's early work. Ambient comprised unissued cuts from 1988-91, composed of barely audible atmospheric interludes. Moby signed to leading independent Mute Records in 1993, and the following year released "Hymn", a transcendental religious techno odyssey, distinguished by a 35-minute ambient mix and a Laurent Garner remix. The track was included on his eclectic major label debut, Everything Is Wrong. His own remix catalogue includes Brian Eno, LFO ("Tan Ta Ra"), Pet Shop Boys, Erasure ("Chorus"), Orbital ("Speed Freak"), Depeche Mode and even Michael Jackson. He moved away from his dance base in 1996 with the thrash rock of Animal Rights, and in turn sounded more like Johnny Rotten. His "James Bond Theme' debuted at UK number 8 in November 1997. The attendant I Like To Score was an uneasy experiment in soundtrack work. Another change of style was apparent on 1999"s Play, a superb album on which several tracks were based around sampled field recordings made by folklorist Alan Lomax in the earlier part of the century. Play became a remarkable sleeper hit, thanks in the main to the licensing of every track on the album for use in advertisements. Moby repeated the Play formula to lesser effect on 18. Today's guest makes me want it to be 1990 again! It's Brenda Sauter, bassist for the bands Wild Carnation, The Feelies, Speed The Plough, & The Trypes. But she didn't start off on the bass. In fact, she started off playing the piano before moving to guitar. She began playing with her friends, which makes sense. Music basically defined her friend group at that point. She was playing a lot of folk music. Around this time, Brenda began playing…melodica! Yes melodica, the instrument all guitarists secretly wish they could play. One of the groups she was in even won a talent show judged by famed New York DJ, Cousin Brucie.  But there were too many guitars in the bands she was in, so she began playing bass. That proved fortuitous.  After sitting in with The Trypes, the eventually approached her about joining the band. That started a connection that eventually led to joining the band Wild Carnation. Not only did she join the band, she replaced famed bass player Michael Imperioli. He's also dipped his toe into acting. Maybe you've seen some of his work. It took a little while for Brenda to accept because she didn't have a cassette player in her truck and couldn't listen to the demos! But once Brenda joined, they started working on their debut, Tricycle. She just didn't know she'd be playing bass and singing, too. The album has been remastered and re-released. In addition to that, there is a treasure trove of extra tracks! And there's more good news; Superbus, the follow-up to Tricycle, will be given the same treatment in the fall. So follow Wild Carnation on Facebook. Pick up the album on Bandcamp. And keep checking back for updates. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on Twitter & Instagram. Episode 1 of INSIDE BARRY REYNOLDS features Part 1 of this exclusive interview series with legendary guitarist, songwriter and Compass Point Allstar BARRY REYNOLDS, in conversation with New York DJ/musicologist and music journalist GREG CAZ. On Part 1, Barry reveals his fascinating early years in Lancashire as a teenage guitar prodigy in the UK and around the early Beatles scene in Hamburg, becoming a top recording and studio musician and solo artist in early '70s London. A great raconteur and gentleman, Barry also talks about his fortuitous meeting with Marianne Faithfull in the late '70s, eventually creating the critical and commercial success Broken English and more. Known for his iconic songwriting and guitar work with Marianne Faithfull and Grace Jones, Barry is also one of the original Compass Point Allstars, the group of international musicians that created some of rock-n-roll and reggae’s most ground-breaking ‘70s and ‘80s albums and sessions at Chris Blackwell’s studio in the Bahamas. He continues to produce, write and play with new and veteran international recording artists including Baaba Maal, Brazilian Girls, Tammy Faye Starlight and more. Groovement Soul Podcast No.14 is Leftside Wobble's live set from our monthly residency in The Grand Social on the 29th September 2012. Check the grooves that rocked the party on the night. INTERVIEWQuestions by Colin Leopold Q: Where is your favourite place to (a) have a beer (b) have a dance (c) eat dinner? A: Not that I'm swerving the question but in all three cases it's anywhere where the company is great. Q: Do you think there are less boundaries between soulful music in 2012? A: If anything, I think over time dance music has become even more controlled by ever more micro genres. In the 80s before the advent of house music, the better clubs weren't afraid to book DJ's that played diverse music that crossed genre boundaries. New York DJ's such as Mark Kamins, John 'Jellybean' Benitez, Arthur Baker and Francois K were so good at putting together diverse sets that fused multiple musical influences together. Those DJ's have probably been my biggest influence. Q: What advice would you give to best join the dots in a DJ set?A: For me, it's about being in tune with the crowd and not being afraid to play with the mood and energy of the room through the music you're playing. Q: What DJs do you listen to? A: As many as I can. Monday's generally involve me booting up the iPlayer to listen to Giles Petersens show but I also ensure I download mixes from my favourite club DJ's. People like Chris Duckenfield, Gerd Jensen and Move D. Q: You worked a lot with Dazed and Confused magazine in the 90s, what magazine do you read these days and if you could set up your own non-music magazine what would it cover and what would it be called?A: Most of my reading habits have moved to digital media formats these days, but I still keep an eye on what's happening in print publishing via a great blog called Magculture. It specialises in finding those really interesting micro publishing titles that cross the boundaries between culture, fashion and music. From a digital sperspective though, I'm really excited by tablets as a magazine format. There's a really great iPad magazine called Letter To Jane the reminds me very much of the early days of Dazed & Confused in the way that it does really original stuff with it's publishing medium. In the same way that Dazed made you think differently about print media, Letter To Jane does the same with interactive media. Not that I've got any ambition to set up my own magazine, but if I did it would definitely be something for digital tablets. As for a name, Jefferson Hack got there first when he named his Dazed & Confused spin-off Another Magazine. Q: Where do you find your new music? Name your hottest recent discovery or 'one to watch'? A: Soundcloud has obviously become a very important source of music discovery for me in recent years as I love the direct contact with artists it provides which isn't coloured by the opinions of others such as music journalists or record store employees. I obviously don't rely solely on Soundcloud for music discovery, but I just try to ensure my ears/eyes are always open, whatever the source – radio, social media, email newsletters, promos etc. The most exciting band I've discovered this year is a band called Public Service Broadcasting – so hard to describe but in a strange way they remind me of Lemonjelly. Search out a track of theirs called Spitfire on YouTube and you'll get what I mean, the visuals are such an integral part of their music. Q: You did an edit of The Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows. Who's your favourite Beatle and why? | A: That's a really hard one as it constantly flips between John Lennon and George Harrison. At the moment it's George but probably only because I recently bought the Martin Scorsese documentary about his life 'Living In The Material World'. I've just been asked to DJ at an evening to launch the DVD/Blue Ray release of The Beatles 'Magical Mystery Tour' movie so my opinion will probably change again after I've been exposed to the psychedelic joys that evening brings! Q: What's the last country you visited to DJ and what was your best, and worst memory of it? A: I've just got back from Barcelona, where I was DJing for a night called Playtime. It was at a brand new venue on the Ramblas which if I'm to be totally honest, I had grave reservations about seeing as the Ramblas is in the centre of Barcelonas tourist district. But it was a fantastic little club with the best small club sound system I've come across outside of London's Plastic People. My favourite memory of the weekend was meeting so many friends that I've made over the last few years through things like Soundcloud. It's a beautifully strange sensation when you feel you know somebody pretty well but you're only meeting them face to face for the first time. The worst part of the weekend was arriving back at my hotel for a quick kip 15 minutes before check-out and finding out that my room was already booked by somebody else so I had no way of bribing the staff into allowing me an extra couple of hours in the room! Q: Did you go to Notting Hill Carnival this year? How was it and what are your top three essentials to bring to make it a good Carnival? A: Notting Hill Carnival is one of my highlights of the year and I'm lucky enough to DJ on what for me is Carnivals best sound system – Sancho Panza. I also run an after party with the Sancho crew on the Sunday night. As for three essentials, 1.) A smile 2.) Your dancing feet 3.) Some form of carnival guilty pleasure – pick your own!
