In this episode we welcome back Nicky Spinks and James Anderson to the podcast. We take the opporchancity to speak with Nicky about her recent 160 mile Winter Spine Challenger North win.Nicky takes us through her thoughts about how she approached and managed this race by ignoring what other runners were doing and focusing on her own race, and it paid off big time for her.James invited us down to the Galloway Hills way back in 2024 after we spoke with James post Lakeland 50/100 specifically about hill safety. JC took up the offer to visit Galloway and take part in a training day for the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team. We discuss the geographic area covered by the team, what the experience is of being out in the hills as a rescue team, how they all work together to look out for us when the things you hope might never happen...happen!We talk through the training practice and how the team rescued a quite famous casualty off the hill that day.Nicky and the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team are race directors of the Bruce's Crown Race and The Heart of Granite (resurrected for April 2025)All profits of the race will go to Galloway Mountain Rescue Team.Donate to the Galloway Mountain Rescue TeamEnter Bruce's Crown RaceEnter The Heart of Granite Race

Kia ora e te whānau! This week we're joined by DCR favourite guest Gareth Morris as he recounts to us how he knocked off a run he first dreamed of more than a decade ago when he read the DCR favourite book, Feet in the Clouds, by Richard Askwith. The famous Bob Graham Round, a fell running loop in the English Lake District, challenges runners to tackle 42 peaks over a 66 mile course in less than 24 hours. (Bob Graham was the first person to go under that mark, in 1932). Gareth talks all about the history of this famous route, the camaraderie and sacrifice of those who helped him, and how he used the powerful words of legendary runner Nicky Spinks to get him to the end. Even if you've never heard of the BGR, or have any intention of running it, you'll come away from this episode inspired (and with new knowledge about unique English cuisine …) Best enjoyed running!Sign up to the DCR AidStation Episode links:Westie Runner on YouTubeSQUADRUNDirt Church Merch!Maree Leith Pledge Me for Finding Her Stride NickrunsAustralia.org.nz Inia Raumati Kia Mau Kia Ora CurranzJulbo Eyewear UltrAspireDirt Church Radio on InstagramDirt Church Radio on Twitter Dirt Church Radio on Facebook CieleFurther Faster New ZealandEnjoy!Music by Andrew McDowall, Digicake
Who would run 60 miles over Wales toughest Mountains, and then turn around and do it all over again? This weeks guest Ajay Hanspal did exactly that on his way to setting a new Double Paddy Buckley Round FKT. What is the Paddy Buckley round? Ajay gives us the details, but in summary it covers 132 miles, with 58,500ft of elevation and includes 94 summits! Phew... Previous guest Nicky Spinks was the first to complete the challenge in 2019 and held the previous record of 57hrs 27mins, come on in to find out how Ajay got on. Ajay is a passionate guy, passionate about running and testing himself, passionate about the planet we live on (founder member of the Green Runners) and passionate about life in general. We talk about food, we always talk about food, Ajay's calorie burn on the Double Paddy Buckley was in excess of 30,000 calories, maybe the highest we've ever heard about! And...have you ever been scary fit? What does scary fit feel like, Ajay explains all. As happens with a lot of our guests, it feels like Ajay is just getting started, we are indeed watching this space... Ajay's Double Paddy Buckley on Strava
Send us a Text Message. In this episode I speak with Ajay Hanspal, who at the start of this month set a new DPB round in 52hrs 51mins 35secs. Covering a staggering 131.93 miles with 58,537ft of vertical! This was over 4 hours quicker than the original record set by Nicky Spinks. We talk about his route into running, which is an unusual one given that he used running to help his rehab from a serious traumatic brain injury when he was just 18 years old.We talk about growing up in the sport of trail running, his journey to breaking that record and his involvement with the ever growing community of Green Runners.Ajay is a super nice guy and a pleasure to interview!URS

On the latest episode of the podcast I speak to ultra-running royalty Nicky Spinks. We chat about our shared experiences of this years race and how it went for her.We talk about her sleep strategy, fuelling and kit that she used.We also discuss hallucinations, the epic weather on course and wether or not she will return to Britains most brutal race.I'm really pleased to have had this conversation with Nicky as she's been on my list of people that I've wanted to interview since the podcast launched.URS
We might've mentioned Season 9 would be different. Our gift this week is a video version of our chat with Nicky Spinks of course you can still access the audio version if you prefer. Nicky has been on our wish list of 'guests' since round about day one, it's well worth the wait! We start off with an intro from Nicky about her running journey, her 'why' and her love of the outdoors life. We then get the best description ever of the 'big rounds' in the UK, a passion of Nicky's which she has both set records on and also racked up an amazing number of support runs playing a part in many other runners successful rounds. Listen in to find out more......even the coveted double rounds are covered? From being inspired by runners including Joss Naylor and Roger Baumeister, Nicky has picked up the mantle and now inspires runners far and wide with her endeavour and fortitude, motivating others to push themselves and see what is possible. Nicky celebrated 10 years of surviving cancer in 2016 by taking on a Double Bob Graham round, the film crew invited to follow her got a right treat! And what a celebration it is... Run Forever: The film of Nicky Spinks & The Double Bob Graham Nicky likes it dark n gnarly, she's pretty good over the flatter ground too, it's just a means of getting to the harder stuff quicker is our guess! We criss-cross the globe as we speak about some of Nicky's many adventures running long distances over many days and of course the subject of food is covered, took us a record breaking 23 minutes to get there! There are golden nuggets aplenty and shared wisdom from one of the greatest runners to ever lace up a pair of shoes. Nicky is part of running folklore, it was an absolutely honour for us to spend some time in her company. To quote a line from Nicky's songs choice: I can climb the highest mountain... You'll love this, you'll likely listen to it more than once! Nicky's fundraising link for Odyssey --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/youngheartsrunfree/message

In episode 51 I'm speaking to the legend that is Nicky Spinks. Nicky was a cover star for Women's Running on the issue before I started, so for me she has always been the one that got away. Not any more! Here she is chatting about her incredible running career so far. Nicky is one of the greatest fell runners of all time, if not the greatest. She set women's records for the Ramsay Round (that's 58 miles in Scotland including Ben Nevis), The Paddy Buckley Round (that's 65 miles in Snowdonia with 47 summits) and the Bob Graham Round (this is the Lake District one, and is 66 miles). She is the holder of the overall record for the double Bob Graham round and is the only person ever to complete doubles of the other two Rounds. She talks to me about how she got into running in the first place, how she trains for those crazy distances, and her experiences running those unheard-of challenges (pre-Nicky). She also talks about her experiences running the terrifying Barkley Marathons, and it sounds like she has some unfinished business there, so watch this space. And because along with being a farmer and running incredible distances, she's also a coach, I ask her opinion on how we can all run well on the trails, and – crucially – I ask her what the best food to eat on an ultra is – spoiler: there's a lot of pork pies. Sabrina Verjee - What an amazing athlete and example being set in our sport. Sabrina set out to try to set a new record for ascending "All of the Wainwrights". There are 214 mountain peaks in the Lake District in the UK that Alfred WainWright wrote about in his 7 volume book. A few people have run them all, the route covers 318miles and over 4 times the ascent of Mt Everest. Last year Paul Tierney took the record from Steve Birkenshaw. This year Sabrina attempted it. Completed it. And then gained an even greater reputation by declaring "It's not a record". Sabrina was running, walking, crawling, bum sliding for almost 7 days to complete this epic adventure. Due to injury Sabrina had to lean on some of her supporters to safely descend some hills backwards. Therefore Sabs has rejected the record and vowed to come back and complete it in a pure style in the sprit of British fell running. We catch up with Sabs tired again after supporting her husband Ben on his "Bob Graham Round". Sabrina is absolutely clear that the support of her wonderful crew made it a fantastic adventure and would like to take every opportunity to thank: Her husband Ben, Kim Collison, Jacob and Sabina Snochowski, Simon Mills, Sally Fawcett, Tim Miller, Steve Birkinshaw, Tom and Astrid Gibbs, Paul Tierney, Dave Cummins, Charlie Sproson, Jeff Powell Davies, Joe Faulkner, Helen Jackson, James Thurlow, Victoria Rose-Miller, Ben Abdelnour, Shane Ohly, Josh Hartley, John Knapp, Neil Talbott, Nicky Spinks, Mike and Hazel Robinson, Lou Roberts, Bruce Duncan, Dave Spence, Peter Sowerby, Rob Bond, Giles Ruck, Paul Wilson, Gaynor Prior, Wendy Dodds, Jonathan Whilock, Dan Duxbury and Howard Dracup. It was such an honour to interview British fell runner Nicky Spinks for this episode. Nicky is a 53-year old wife, British farmer and she loves a good curry. Sounds pretty normal, doesn’t it? So let’s try that sentence again. Nicky is a 53-year old record breaking British ultra-distance runner who is the overall record holder for the Double Bob Graham round, became the first person EVER to complete doubles of the Paddy Buckley and Charlie Ramsey round too… That was AFTER being diagnosed with Breast cancer at the age of 39. Oh and she still hopes to become the first woman ever to finish the Barkley Marathons. In short, she’s pretty flippin’ amazing and it was a real treat to talk to her. You'll hear: *A long interview with Nicky about her background in running and farming, why office life wasn’t for her, why she is chomping at the bit to return to the Barkley Marathons, how she forms her support team, how she survives on ten minutes sleep over three days, how she vowed never to do another race after her first ever 10km, her love of spicy curry, how she got into skydiving, the impact cancer has had on her life and outlook and why she almost ditched the double Bob Graham round attempt before she had even left the car park. *An update from British triathlete David McNamee (http://www.davidmcnamee.co.uk/) , who is on lock down in Girona. He talks about the impact the restrictions are having on him, why he’s following the rules to a T, why Magnums are the new croissants...And trying to run on his 7m balcony. Like the show? Nicky and Warren Pole join The Nation to discuss what Fell running is, its origins, and where it fits with trail and ultra running. We discuss one of the famous fell run challenges, the Bob Graham Round. Named after Bob Graham, who in June 1932 broke the Lakeland Fell record by traversing 42 fells within a 24-hour period, at the age of 42. Each summer around 100 of the most highly tuned ultra-distance fell runners will attempt the 66-mile, 27,000 ft of ascent within the allotted 24 hours. Only one in three will succeed. To date approximately 2055 people have completed the single round in 24 hours. Nicky has set records on the Bob Graham Round in previous years. In 2016, on her 10th anniversary of overcoming breast cancer, the 49-year-0ld bested the record for the DOUBLE Bob Graham Round. This covers over 132 miles, 52,000' of ascent over 84 summits.
