While he agrees with some of the points, such as avoiding trunks below the knee and plain knit socks, he disagrees with others, such as avoiding cufflinks and wearing bright colors. Roberto emphasises the importance of personal style and comfort, and encourages listeners to wear what makes them feel confident.TakeawaysPersonal style and comfort should be the primary considerations when choosing clothing.Avoid trunks below the knee and plain knit socks.Cufflinks can be a sign of class and should not be considered aging.Wear colours that suit your skin tone and make you feel confident.Invest in quality fabrics and avoid cheap, fast fashion.Avoid prominent logos and opt for understated elegance.Choose clothing that is appropriate for the occasion and environment.Sound Bites"I don't think cufflinks are aging. I love chatting with Simon Mills, he has a wonderful breadth of knowledge across the huge spectrum of different herbs and spices. And he can talk eloquently and sensitively about them, in a manner respectful of both the traditional beliefs and uses of them, as well as the science that may or may not support their claims.Today we talk about the use of spices and what extra benefits they may be adding to our diets beyond simply “antioxidants”.We talk about bitters and tonics and why they may work.We explore how spices may impact our gut microbiota and potentially influence their health benefits.Rosemary and sage on the brain, ginger for colds and how traditional antiseptics worked.Simon Mills is a University of Cambridge graduate in medical sciences who has been a herbal practitioner in Exeter UK since 1977. He has been a complementary health pioneer from the inception of the term in 1979, and later in the fields of integrated health, selfcare and social prescription. Nail's first gigs as a DJ were at school, offering to save the school money instead of booking the local mobile disco. He played for free, spinning early house classics (and the odd Erasure remix). It's in his bones... He eventually started playing the clubs in his hometown of Nottingham in the early 90s, including sets at the legendary DiY events at places like The Marcus Garvey Centre. His first release came on the DiY comp Strictly 4 Groovers on WARP records in 1993, the now classic track Cassiopeia. The Beeston EP followed in 1994, the first of a number of EPs for DiY, as well as his debut album Big D's Lounge in 1996. A remix for Inner City was also a highlight of this busy mid 90s period. Nail has since had records and remixes with Classic, Robsoul and Mosaic among many more, including his own label 89:Ghost, started in 2014. After taking time out from house music to focus on Bent, with Simon Mills, he returned to DJing in mid 2010s, playing all over Europe at venues such as Fabric, Tresor and Metronome. He has new tracks coming out soon on labels such as Bid Musik, Groovphoria and Odour Recordings, and it's with great pleasure we welcome him into the SB guest mix series. "It's all stuff from this year, some heavy dub stuff and some melodic bits too!"

Simon Mills' book A Commerce of Knowledge: Trade, Religion, and Scholarship Between England and the Ottoman Empire, 1600-1760 (Oxford UP, 2020) tells the story of three generations of Church of England chaplains who served the English Levant Company in Syria during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Reconstructing the careers of its protagonists in the cosmopolitan city of Ottoman Aleppo, Simon Mills investigates the links between English commercial and diplomatic expansion, and English scholarly and missionary interests: the study of Middle-Eastern languages; the exploration of biblical and Greco-Roman antiquities; and the early dissemination of Protestant literature in Arabic. Early modern Orientalism is usually conceived as an episode in the history of scholarship. By shifting the focus to Aleppo, A Commerce of Knowledge brings to light the connections between the seemingly separate worlds, tracing the emergence of new kinds of philological and archaeological enquiry in England back to a series of real-world encounters between the chaplains and the scribes, booksellers, priests, rabbis, and sheikhs they encountered in the Ottoman Empire. Setting the careers of its protagonists against a background of broader developments across Protestant and Catholic Europe, Mills shows how the institutionalization of English scholarship, and the later English attempt to influence the Eastern Christian churches, were bound up with the international struggle to establish a commercial foothold in the Levant. He argues that these connections would endure until the shift of British commercial and imperial interests to the Indian subcontinent in the second half of the eighteenth century fostered new currents of intellectual life at home. Simon Mills is a senior lecturer in British and European History at Newcastle University Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Find a link to the report on our website: https://bit.ly/3EFpD3M This webinar accompanies the launch of a new booklet from the Esop (employee share ownership) Centre - “Why Employee Share Ownership Matters”. Big concepts can be unfairly pigeonholed in small boxes. The concept of employee share ownership ought to start from a moral perspective, not least sharing risks and benefits with fellow economic agents. The benefits attach to a number of levels, from the micro to the macro. At a micro level, employee share ownership seems fair, encourages cohesion, promotes productivity, and provides financial security. At a macro level, employee share ownership encourages longer-term thinking, promotes national productivity, and aids moves to ‘sustainability'. At an international level, anyone promoting various forms of ‘caring', ‘compassionate', or ‘stakeholder' capitalism or ‘third ways' should take a long, hard look at providing more fervent support for employee share ownership. And then there is UN Sustainable Development Goal 10 - “Reduced Inequalities”. Yet too often the employee share ownership pigeonhole becomes ‘tax'. Employee share ownership is a good thing to promote even if you don't believe that tax is a necessary promotional tool. If you do believe that employee share ownership is deserving of tax advantages, then don't lose sight of the wider goals. This booklet attempts to restate the widest case for employee share ownership regardless of national boundaries. It attempts to re-connect the employee share ownership movement with its deeper benefits, connecting open market economies with environmental, social, and governance standards, in turn linked to long-term sustainability goals. This booklet examines the societal case for Employee Share Ownership (ESO) and sets out its alleged benefits. The booklet attempts to bring readers up-to-date with a movement that is several decades old, and connect the movement with current societal concerns, in particular addressing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, in turn linked to long-term sustainability goals. Finally, the booklet sets out areas for renewed and further research. Professor Michael Mainelli, FCCA FCSI(Hon) FBCS, Chairman, Z/Yen Group, is a qualified accountant, securities professional, computer specialist, and management consultant, educated at Harvard University and Trinity College Dublin. Michael gained his PhD at the London School of Economics where he was also a Visiting Professor of Innovation & IT. Michael is an Alderman and was elected Sheriff of the City of London 2019-2021. Simon Mills began his career by working as a field botanist on Cloud and Elfin rainforest in Northern Costa Rica. Kate Adie presents reporters' despatches from Ethiopia, the Cop26 climate summit, Switzerland, Georgia and Brazil. The conflict in Ethiopia has left the country's northern Tigray region largely cut off, with millions facing starvation. Among the many combatants now on manoeuvres are the “Oromo Liberation Army” – the Oromo being a people who live mostly in the centre and south of the country. Catherine Byaruhanga was given a rare invitation to meet them. Ethiopia is one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change - the subject of the Cop26 summit in Glasgow. Among those attending were the BBC's David Shukman, a veteran of ten previous Cops, and someone who has watched at close hand the long battle to see the dangers of climate change. The ski industry is already preparing for warmer temperatures, with predictions that the snow at many resorts will regularly melt, or never form in the first place. So what can these resorts do to stay in business? Simon Mills reports from Switzerland. After former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was smuggled back into the country, and then chucked in prison, he went on a hunger strike leading to protests in the street. What exactly is happening is still unclear, but then Rayhan Demytrie says that when it comes to Saakashvili, it has always been hard to separate myth from reality. The pandemic meant that Sao Paulo's bars and restaurants were forced to shut – and yet there was one kind of food outlet which was permitted to say open, deemed an essential part of Brazilian life. They are called lanchonetes, local eateries with a tradition going back more than a hundred years. Andrew Downie explains why he is a lanchonete fan.

A Commerce of Knowledge, authored by Simon Mills, tells the story of three generations of Church of England chaplains who served the English Levant Company in Syria during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Reconstructing the careers of its protagonists in the cosmopolitan city of Ottoman Aleppo, the book investigates the links between English commercial and diplomatic expansion, and English scholarly and missionary interests: the study of Middle-Eastern languages; the exploration of biblical and Greco-Roman antiquities; and the early dissemination of Protestant literature in Arabic. Early modern Orientalism is usually conceived as an episode in the history of scholarship. By shifting the focus to Aleppo, A Commerce of Knowledge brings to light the connections between two seemingly separate worlds, tracing the emergence of new kinds of philological and archaeological enquiry in England back to a series of real-world encounters between the chaplains and the scribes, booksellers, priests, rabbis, and sheikhs they encountered in the Ottoman Empire. This webinar is chaired by Marina Rustow, Khedouri A. Zilkha Professor of Near Eastern Studies and Professor of History at Princeton University.

Sabrina Verjee - What an amazing athlete and example being set in our sport. Sabrina set out to try to set a new record for ascending "All of the Wainwrights". There are 214 mountain peaks in the Lake District in the UK that Alfred WainWright wrote about in his 7 volume book. A few people have run them all, the route covers 318miles and over 4 times the ascent of Mt Everest. Last year Paul Tierney took the record from Steve Birkenshaw. This year Sabrina attempted it. Completed it. And then gained an even greater reputation by declaring "It's not a record". Sabrina was running, walking, crawling, bum sliding for almost 7 days to complete this epic adventure. Due to injury Sabrina had to lean on some of her supporters to safely descend some hills backwards. Therefore Sabs has rejected the record and vowed to come back and complete it in a pure style in the sprit of British fell running. We catch up with Sabs tired again after supporting her husband Ben on his "Bob Graham Round". Sabrina is absolutely clear that the support of her wonderful crew made it a fantastic adventure and would like to take every opportunity to thank: Her husband Ben, Kim Collison, Jacob and Sabina Snochowski, Simon Mills, Sally Fawcett, Tim Miller, Steve Birkinshaw, Tom and Astrid Gibbs, Paul Tierney, Dave Cummins, Charlie Sproson, Jeff Powell Davies, Joe Faulkner, Helen Jackson, James Thurlow, Victoria Rose-Miller, Ben Abdelnour, Shane Ohly, Josh Hartley, John Knapp, Neil Talbott, Nicky Spinks, Mike and Hazel Robinson, Lou Roberts, Bruce Duncan, Dave Spence, Peter Sowerby, Rob Bond, Giles Ruck, Paul Wilson, Gaynor Prior, Wendy Dodds, Jonathan Whilock, Dan Duxbury and Howard Dracup. I first sat down with my guest in this episode, Pacific Rim College faculty member and herbalist Peter Conway, to record for my other podcast, Pacific Rim College Radio. However, I knew once the interview was over that I also needed to publish it here as, among other assets, Peter is freakishly intelligent and deeply committed to his purpose. He has lived in a van and a teepee, has fought for the preservation and dissemination of herbal medicine knowledge, and generally follows in life a punk rocker ethos. Listening to him talk about plant-spirit medicine is like listening to a living mystic – I actually think Peter is a living mystic – and his knowledge extends vastly beyond the bounds of herbal medicine. We touch base with myriad topics including chaos theory, inner reflection during Covid, punk rock, spirituality, and nature. Here are some more commonly known bits about Peter. He graduated from the College of Phytotherapy in the UK in 1995. Prior to joining Pacific Rim College in 2015, Peter taught for many institutions and co-wrote the BSc Degree course in Herbal Medicine at Napier University in. He served as president of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy for 12 years and is a former director of the European Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association. Peter is the author of “The Consultation in Phytotherapy” textbook that he is now revising for its second edition. Peter currently lives in Victoria, is one of 9 distinguished faculty members of Pacific Rim College Online's renowned Home Herbalist and Community Herbalist programs, and is working on an online project that will address “deep herbalism". Speaking of deep…that's Peter. This guy has so much wisdom that you might want to listen to this episode more than once. My guest in this episode, PRC faculty member and herbalist Peter Conway, has lived in a van and a teepee, has fought for the preservation and dissemination of herbal medicine knowledge, and generally follows in life a punk rocker ethos. I assure you that Peter is a freak, and that is one of his many endearing qualities. Listening to him talk about plant-spirit medicine is like listening to a living mystic. And yet much of his mystery is wrapped up in what he calls the mundane: the common and ordinary world of herbal medicine that we are all rooted in, even though most have perhaps never been conscious of those roots. From the distillation of alcohols and the production of colas to candies and perfumes, all were once forms of herbal medicine. Peter graduated from the College of Phytotherapy in the UK in 1995. Prior to joining Pacific Rim College in 2015, Peter taught for many institutions. He co-wrote the BSc Degree course in Herbal Medicine at Napier University in Edinburgh and co-wrote the “National Professional Standards in Herbal Medicine” for the UK Government. Researchers from the University of Toronto, the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and Sunnybrook Research Institute, all of Toronto, in Canada. Looked at 235,110 patients who had a concussion over a 20-year period. The patients were aged 41 years on average, evenly split between genders, and most lived in cities. The majority had no suicide attempt, hospitalization or past psychiatric disorder. In the 9.3 years following the concussion, 667 suicides occurred. Weekday concussion incidents were associated with 519 suicides, or 29 per 100,000 people. This was triple the rate for the general population of Canada, and higher than that for military personnel.
