Move aside, Mark Lewisohn. It's SPIZERTIME. That's right. At long last, the Beatles have announced a new 8 LP box set of the U.S. Beatles records they're (dubiously) calling "The Beatles: 1964 Albums in Mono". T.J.'s first phone call was to the Venture at North Ave. and Kostner to pre-order his box set. His next call was to his doctor, to address a sudden and impolite-to-discuss medical condition lasting longer than 4 hours. #ringthebonephone And his third (and arguably most important) call was to his pal Tony so they could compare their hopes and dreams for the impending November release. [Editor's note: T.J. impending release joke #REDACTED] They also cover the truly pressing questions, like:

MeVa Transit's six highest bus ridership routes will be running two hours later starting tomorrow thanks, in part, to a $56 million statewide budget increase for regional transit authorities.MeVa Transit Administrator Noah Berger, a recent guest on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program, said he also has more drivers, helping support extended hours.“With our September schedule, we'll be extending service on six routes, including two in Haverhill, to 9 at night. One of the areas we've heard about from our riders, and community groups in general, is that we stop running too early. We stop at 6 in Haverhill and 7 in Lawrence, and life just doesn't stop at 6 or 7 o'clock at night,” he said.Berger went on to explain a couple of the routes that will see extended service.“We targeted routes that will get people back from the plazas, that's where folks are working. The routes in Haverhill that will run until 9 o'clock is the 1 that connects Haverhill and Lawrence as well as the Loop, but also the 13 that goes Main Street, North Ave. and then hits Stateline Plaza and then the Walmart in Plaistow,” he added. In addition, the new schedule covers route 2, which connects Lawrence with Andover via South Broadway; route 9, which connects Lawrence with North Andover via Phillips Street; route 10, which connects Lawrence with Methuen via Broadway; and route 24, which connects Lawrence with Lowell via Route 110. Buses depart from MeVa's transportation centers at John J. Buckley Transportation Center in Lawrence and Haverhill's Washington Square at 8 and 9 p.m., returning by 10 p.m.Berger thanked the area's legislative delegation for including increased transportation spending in the new state budget. Berger says the state's 15 regional transit authorities had been “level funded” for the past six years. MeVa is currently not charging passengers for bus service. He added more changes will be coming.“We're working to add back Sunday service on high volume routes. It won't necessarily be the same routes that we talked about for extending service because the demand is a little bit different on Sundays that it might be extending it into the evening. Obviously some of them will be the same. I think you can pretty much guarantee that The 1 will be running on Sundays, but we are still working that out. That would be for our January schedule. So just a preview of coming attractions,” Berger added. In a separate statement, MeVa Chief Communications Officer Niorka Mendez said, “for a long time, riders and community groups have been asking us for later evening service and we've been listening. We are thrilled to be able to put this new funding to work to provide the service our community needs and deserves.”There's more schedule information at mevatransit.com.Support the show
So if you're looking for a conversation about development you might want to find yourself by the Pool at the Maryland Party at the ICSC Conference in Las Vegas Nevada. Rev. Al and I couldn't be more pleased to have the opportunity to catch up with Mark Renbaum, a friend, and a man on a mission to bring a Transit Oriented Development to Lutherville, Maryland. Mark's firm owns the old Caldor site and is looking to redevelop that site as a transit oriented residential and commercial developement. He's also developing in the City with David Bramble at Northwood Plaza adjacent to Morgan plus he's involved in the redevelopment of Madison Park at the 800 Block of North Ave, a place that hasn't been invested in for too long. Mark takes the community approach, he understands that the community needs to be involved and he is working with them on prioritizing green space in Lutherville and delivering the ammenities that support a strong community. Look at the transformation of Northwood by two of Baltimore's best developers, a once blighted property now thriving with great retailers and a new grocery store for the community and it has all the amenties that the Morgan students want. Lutherville is next and the investment in that property is going take the value from 9 million to over 200 million dollars. The taxpayers paid for the light rail a long time ago, we should be maximizing it's use, this development improves the ROI for taxpayers and we all agree that we should be maximizing transit oriented development where ever we can. This is Holy work and Rev Al says Mark is a Holy man! Come along for this lesson in development, he really is one of Baltimore's best. Thanks Mark for coming on to talk about your work and this incredible development in Lutherville, we can wait to see it when it's done!

Welcome to the first SGV Connect Podcast of 2021. In this week's episode, Kris speaks with Alhambra Mayor Sasha Renée Pérez before Kris and Damien give a preview of what to look forward to in 2021. On November 3rd, 2020, Sasha Renée Pérez was elected to Alhambra’s City Council. Because she beat the incumbent Mayor, she took over her predecessor’s term as mayor making her at 28 years old the youngest female mayor in San Gabriel Valley history. In addition, she’s also the youngest woman to serve in the city’s history. Pérez ran on a progressive platform, touting complete streets, including preventive measures to traffic safety such as bike lanes and speed bumps; pushing for renters protections and policies that prevent displacement, and establishing a climate action plan. In our conversation, we delved into the weeds of her policy platform, got her take on the defund the police movement, and how she sees community engagement as central to creating a more equitable city. If 2020 were a year like no other, then 2021 looks to be just as unprecedented both locally and across the country. Damien and Kris stalk about some local stories that may have fallen through the cracks such as an opportunity to weigh in on projects such as the North Ave. Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Plan in Pasadena. But 2021 needs to be about more than just projects and proposals; it needs to be the year that cities and government agencies look at the experiences of 2020 and react. What our cities learn from the pandemic and the unrest will determine whether or not society grows as a result of this hardship or just "returns to normal" in a way that continues to marginalize and disenfranchise many. SGV Connect is supported by Foothill Transit, offering car-free travel throughout the San Gabriel Valley with connections to the new Gold Line Stations across the Foothills and Commuter Express lines traveling into the heart of downtown L.A. A rainbow of humanity gathered throughout southeastern Wisconsin Saturday — from Greendale to Grafton — as marches continue in reaction to the tragic death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police almost two weeks ago. Hundreds of people converged at the North Point Water Tower in Milwaukee Saturday before making their way north to Whitefish Bay and back again. Energy was building in this patch of brilliant green at the easternmost point of North Ave. People scooped up signs that volunteers created on the spot. Latest WUWM & NPR Protest Coverage Jake, who didn’t want to share his last name, helped organize the march’s medic crew. A doctor and other health care workers have volunteered to triage, just in case. Jake hopes Milwaukee can transition to more peaceful change. One step forward, he believes, would be demilitarizing the police. "Just seeing an antagonistic force in your community with military grade weapons — like the stuff I used in Afghanistan — is kind of

This is the fifth episode of the Quimby's Bookstore Podcast, and we talk to Dave Roche and Cassie J. Sneider. They did an event together at Quimby's Bookstore when Cassie was touring with her book Fine, Fine Music. Cassie J. Sneider writes witty essays about growing up with an appreciation for classic rock like Aerosmith, Beverly Hills 90210, a pug she inherited, and various other topics. She describes her work as being "sort of like an X rated Judy Bloom." Her work is pretty awesome and hilarious. Also, she has lots of tattoos. Dave Roche is author of On Subbing and the zines About My Dissapperarance and Curse Journal, among others. He writes about things like his struggle with Crohn's Disease and being a substitute teacher. He is witty, charming and calls Bingo in footie pajamas. The books and zines we talk about in the podcast are available at Quimby's Bookstore at 1854 W. North Ave, in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood and on the web at quimbys.com.
This episode features a discussion with Jon Kristiansen and Tara G. Warrior talking about their book Metalion: The Slayer Mag Diaries (Bazillion Points Publishers). Jon started Slayer Mag in Norway in 1985 and put out 20 issues over the span of 25 years. The zine covered a variety of extreme metal bands, including Emperor, Slayer, Kreator, Nihilist, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Cathedral, Entombed, Morbid, Napalm Death, and more. The Onion AV club called Slayer zine founder Jon Kristiansen “one of the best primary sources for facts and stories about Mayhem, Varg, and what really happened back in the day." The Chicago Reader called this book "a chronicle of death and black metal at their births but also a personal coming-of-age story." It's an awesome 744 page hardcover with tons of pictures and reproduction pages from every issue, and there's even material from the precursor Live Wire zine. It's also part memoir. Co-editor Tara interviewed Jon all about his experiences with the zine, and then together they decided what to include. Yes, we have it at Quimby's. It is $39.95. Jon and Tara were at Quimby's for a Chicago release event for the book on 6/8/11. But we conducted this interview in our dark and creepy basement beforehand. Quimby's Bookstore is at 1854 W. North Ave, Chicago, IL 60622. Or find us on the web at quimbys.com.

Welcome to the 2nd Quimby's podcast! This is an interview with the authors of The Beat Cop’s Guide to Chicago Eats, Sgt. David J. Haynes of the Chicago Police Department and his partner-in-crime, blogger Christopher Garlington. They were at Quimby's for a release event on June 14th, 2011. Welcome to the first Quimby's Bookstore podcast. We are located at 1854 W. North Ave, Chicago. On the web you can find us at quimbys.com Margaret Hicks discussed her book Chicago Comedy: A Fairly Serious History (History Press) at Quimby's Bookstore on 5/28/11. Chicago has developed an international reputation for split sides and slapped knees. The “Chicago Style of Comedy” evolved from nineteenth-century vaudeville, through the rebellious comics of the 50’s, and into the improvisation and sketch as well as stand-up that is ushering in a new millennium. Drawing on material both hilarious and profound, Chicago Comedy: A Fairly Serious History touches on what makes Chicago different from other cities and how that difference produced some of the greatest minds comedy will ever know: Amos and Andy, Jack Benny, Lenny Bruce, Del Close, John Belushi, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert and so many, many more. Margaret Hicks is a professional tour guide in Chicago, who has been giving walking tours in the loop (like her tour of Old Town offered through the famous Second City Comedy Club) since she completed the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s docent program in 2004. She maintains her own website at chicagoelevated.com and has had years of experience in the Chicago comedy scene working at improv theaters and stand-up clubs.
