Dublin-Based Akara Robotics Deploy Two Decontamination Robots to NHS Hospital

An Irish robotics startup has developed two decontamination robots that have been deployed in a UK hospital, with the important mission of cleaning its wards and operating theatres more efficiently. Thanks to a generous financial donation from the Friends of the Friarage, the Northallerton hospital, which is part of the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Friarage Hospital is currently home to Akara Robotics' cutting-edge UV decontamination units. Following positive initial trial results, two of Akara's decontamination robots - winners of the Best Newcomer award at the Infection Prevention Society Conference 2024 - can now be seen in the hospital's clinical decisions unit, wards and operating theatres as part of the next stage of the clinical evaluation of the technology. Working in tandem with the strong team of environmental services staff, the robots serve as a powerful tool to enable the hospital to decontaminate rooms with a quicker turnaround time. Niamh Donnelly, Co-Founder and Chief Robotics Officer of Akara Robotics said: "Akara's robots build on more than a decade of robotics and artificial intelligence research conducted at Trinity College Dublin, from which the company spun out. Unique AI capabilities give our robots the ability to operate autonomously, which enables them to navigate and decontaminate clinical rooms based on a programme of cleaning instructions that they are given. "We are extremely proud to see our robots working in a hospital setting. It's wonderful to know that they are making a real difference in helping to keep patients safe, and serves as great vindication for all the hard work the team has put in over the years." ? Frontline staff, working with Akara, have created a bespoke workflow app with the aim of removing the need for paper checklists and providing real-time alerts when rooms are available, further enhancing efficiency. James Dunbar, consultant in infection and general medicine as well as chair of the Friarage Clinical Collaborative, said: "Microbes with resistance to antibiotics are probably the biggest emerging challenge in healthcare today. Our main defence is cleaning and decontamination. Last year, our pilot study using Akara technology had amazing results. We are so grateful to the Friends of Friarage for funding our continued collaboration. It is massively exciting to work with absolutely cutting-edge robotic decontamination units and be right at the forefront of innovation." Conor McGinn, CEO of Akara and Professor at Trinity's School of Engineering, said: "Our robot has been designed not just to improve the quality and consistency of cleaning but to make life easier for staff by streamlining workflows. Importantly, it helps hospitals enable quicker room turnaround times and shorten the time it takes for patients to be admitted. We're proud to see our technology making a real difference at the Friarage Hospital and excited to continue supporting their efforts to stay at the forefront of innovation." Earlier this year, Akara was accepted into the Techstars Healthcare Accelerator in Los Angeles, a program sponsored by leading US healthcare providers, including UnitedHealth and Cedars-Sinai. Following the successful completion of their first trial in a US hospital, Akara has gained early traction in the American market. In September, the company was also recognised as the Best Newcomer at the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) Annual Conference. Looking ahead, Akara aims to expand its presence in the US healthcare market while continuing to scale operations in Europe. The company is also preparing to formally launch a new product next year designed to help hospitals reclaim lost time in their surgical departments, improving efficiency and patient throughput.

In this episode, fourth generation removal man, Geoff Archer, discusses how, even though P.W. Archer & Son is a family firm, he had to go and get a job before returning with his worldly experience of work. We discuss how P.W. Archer & Son was started by Percy William Archer and his brother Horace in May 1920, where they drove to Darlington to buy ice, which they then sold back in Northallerton to butchers, ice cream parlours and anyone else that wanted ice. And how centenary celebrations have sadly been put on hold due to the current pandemic. We discuss challenges from the past, one being during the time of his forefathers, the Second World War, and how he couldn't imagine that someone could come walking through the door and cut the company by two thirds due to nationalisation! And the biggest challenge in his living memory was Black Wednesday in the 90's. Geoff controversially talks about how he would change the moving industry by bringing in tachographs and O-licences for anything hire & reward. We cover framework agreements, one of Geoff's high points to date, showing that a small family firm can compete with the big boys. Outside of the industry we discover Geoff's passion for Citroen 2CV's. And as always, we end Moving Matters with some funny moving stories, one I am sure all removers will relate to regarding addresses, and I dare you not to laugh when you hear about Steve! Enjoy! Introducing Jono Bacon Jono Bacon is today's guest joining us on the Join Up Dots podcast is a community and collaboration strategy consultant, author, advisor, and speaker. He was born in Northallerton, North Yorkshire in England. He lived in Bedfordshire and the West Midlands before relocating to California in 2008 to live with his wife, Erica. While he has always had an interest in technology, the seed change happened in 1998 when Jono's older brother, Simon, introduced him to Open Source. Jono was captivated by the notion of people around the world working together to produce technology that they all shared and benefited from. This created a lifelong passion to understand every nuance of how to build productive, engaging communities where a network of minds, experience, and time can produce value together. Just imagine what is possible if we can crack the code for doing this well?  He started dipping his toes into various technology communities, writing extensively for magazines and online outlets, and then joining a new government initiative called OpenAdvantage that provided Open Source training and consulting. His career then took him to XPRIZE where he helped launch incentive competitions that solve major challenges (such as the $15million dollar Global Learning XPRIZE to build technology that teaches kids literacy without a teach) and then he went to lead community strategy at GitHub where most of the world's technology is created. How The Dots Joined Up For Jono At this point in his career, Jono wanted to apply the power of building communities to broader range of industries and challenges and he started consulting for a variety range of organizations about community and collaboration strategy. This includes industries such as financial services, entertainment, professional services, non-profits, consumer products, security, and beyond. His clients have included Deutsche Bank, The Executive Centre, Google, Mattermost, Glorious Games, Santander, and more. Which is the perfect starting point to today's episode. So growing up in Yorkshire, his path could have been very much like the majority of his colleagues - did he always think he was going to be different? And where do people go wrong with making communities really work for them? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Jono Bacon Show Highlights During the show we discussed such deep weighty subjects with Jono Bacon such as: Why we all have different definitions of what is a community for us.....but you have to understand your audience big  Jono shares his rocking chair moment and why he now has a huge pull to his Northern past. Jono breaks down the first five steps that we all have to take to build a community that truly works. and lastly...... We cover the big failing point of all new communities due to the founder focusing in on what they get and not the group.

Romanian Orphanage Babies: 21 Years On

After the fall of Nicolai Ceausescu in Romania, news of how babies and children were treated in Romanian orphanages horrified the world. Images of infants, silent and malnourished, rocking in their cots, hosed down with cold water, prompted an outburst of collective outrage and thousands of would-be parents rushed to adopt. But little was known then, in 1990, about the long-term effects of such extreme, early deprivation: how would the babies and toddlers who had been denied basic human contact and care, adapt and recover when they were transfered to their new, loving and caring families? Twenty one years on, and scientists who have been tracking the progress of these children in the English and Romanian Adoptees study, have made some astonishing discoveries. Claudia Hammond talks to Professor Sir Michael Rutter and his team about this "unique and natural experiment", which enabled scientists to pinpoint, exactly, when severe deprivation ended and good parenting began. She discovers just how quickly these babies and toddlers caught up with their English peers and hears encouraging evidence about the capacity of human beings to recover from the most appalling early treatment. But she finds out too, that for some of these children, the sobering reality is that their impairments appear to be long-lasting. Cindy and Anthony Calvert from Northallerton in North Yorkshire describe bringing 18-month old Adi back from an orphanage in the north of Romania. She was dehydrated, with tiny, wrinkled, dry hands and a terror of flies. She flourished in her new home, but was so fearful of being thirsty, she would drink water whenever she could. And her early experience of being held under freezing cold water to wash her, she admits, has left her with a life-long fear of swimming. And Will Moult, now 21 years old, who's training to be a primary school teacher, tells Claudia about his early life in one of Romania's most notorious institutions, Orphanage Number One, in Bucharest. He knows he had very little human contact as a baby, until he was adopted and brought to London when he was 18 months old. Uncomforted and alone, he'd rubbed a bald patch on the back of his head from holding onto the bars of his cot. But now Will wants to write a book about his experiences in order to help other, adopted children. Both Adi and Will are both testament to the remarkable resilience shown by so many of the babies and toddlers who were adopted from these Romanian institutions. And it's finding out why children like these appear to have overcome the most traumatic of early years, while others continue to struggle, that makes the long-term ERA study so important.
