Entrepreneur, author and business coach Kate Northrup speaks with Justin about her Do Less methodology. Kate has worked with thousands of business owners to help them harmonize their work with the natural cycles of the body and nature. Instead of living in an unsustainable culture of "perpetual harvest", Kate advocates listening to the natural flow of daily and monthly cycles. The results are powerful. Kate's membership, the Origin Collective, invites women business owners to apply this practical philosophy. Open enrollment starts in May 2021. Kate is funny, gracious and a deep thinker about how we can live lives we enjoy, rather than lives we get through. The world is shifting, and I am evolving along with it.Welcome to the very first episode of Season 7 and of The Going Beyond Podcast! While this is still a place for self-care and self-love, The Going Beyond Podcast goes a step further, bringing you open-minded conversation, non-judgmental support and resources that will take your work, relationships, and sense of self to the next level. I’ve learned that what the world needs now is deeply personal work from each and every one of us, myself included. If we can’t sync up with our vulnerabilities and authenticity, and connect with others doing the same, how can we expect the world to change? This is all part of the launch of a much larger movement, The Going Beyond Movement, a movement that helps you to do the necessary individual work, all while connecting that work with the world that needs your efforts. To celebrate the launch of The Going Beyond Movement and The Going Beyond Podcast, we’re kicking off Season 7 by asking a few of our favorite people what “Going Beyond” means to them. Each of our guests will answer these questions:● What are the ways in which you’re Going Beyond in your own life?● How are you moving past titles, norms, and expectations to expand your purpose?● What are your daily practices of Going Beyond perceived definitions of yourself?● And more…Our Guests Include: ● Patricia Moreno: Founder of the intenSati Method, a workout for the heart, body, mind and spirit, and pioneer of Spiritual Fitness.● Kate Northrup: Entrepreneur and best-selling author of Do Less: A Revolutionary Approach to Time and Energy Management for Ambitious Women, The Do Less Planner, and and the creator of Origin Collective.● Faith Hunter: International yoga and meditation instructor, wellness philanthropist, movement motivator, healing guide, music head, Spiritually Fly theorist, AND my dear friend and my first yoga instructor
If you’re an overachiever, doing less doesn’t feel like the answer to earning more OR achieving your goals. Because doing less feels counterintuitive to both of those things. And by doing less—working less?!—you might feel guilty. You might even feel bad. But according to today’s guest, doing less and scaling back doesn’t mean your business and life is going to fall apart. Instead, it could actually be the turning point you need to become more profitable and creative! Kate Northrup is the bestselling author of Do Less, founder of Origin Collective, a membership site for female entrepreneurs who want to grow their businesses while doing less, and mom of two little ones. For this fabulous episode, I am thrilled to welcome Kate Northrup as my guest. In this incredible interview, we talk about the “shoulds” that we tend to put onto ourselves, how we tend to get stuck and add more responsibilities and tasks to our lists which prevents us from thriving and doesn’t allow us to create more time for the things that fill and enlighten us. As women, we are all mothering someone in our lives, including ourselves, so this episode is for all of us. Kate encourages women to ask themselves: what would your life look like if you had the time to do the things that really matter to you, those things that truly light you up? Kate is sharing the keys to creating a better relationship with your body, learning how to read the cues your body is giving you and to make the best decisions founded in what is that you need to do and not to do. Kate also talks about her brand new book Do Less: A revolutionary Approach to Time and Energy Management for Ambitious Women Here are the main topics of this outstanding conversation: ● Kate shares how she decided that doing less was the way to move forward. ● Kate talks about how she became interested in the moon’s phases and women’s cycles. ● Overworking can be a trauma response. ● Tools to work through the trauma and to learn how to just be present in our bodies. ● We are mammals, and we forget this. ● How can you fit more of you into your schedule? ● How to recognize “energy vampires” by creating healthy boundaries. ● Create space for what matters the most to finding yourself. ● How you do what you do matters more than what you are doing. ● Our well being depends on connection. ● Tools to align with yourself. As Kate marvellously states: You are already fabulous, you do not have to prove that to anyone! Wishing more simplicity and ease in all that you do! “Most of the time we think that as entrepreneurs, if we want to make more revenue and have a big impact, there’s something we’re not doing that we need to add in. Nine times out of ten, it’s something that you’re doing that you should stop doing.” - Kate Northrup If you are a regular listener of this podcast, you know that for years I was what I have termed as a “perfectionist overfunctioner” -- doing more than is healthy, appropriate, and necessary and trying to get an A+ in all of it -- and I know I am not alone in doing this. That’s why I am so excited to introduce you to today’s Finding Brave guest, because she helps others get on the path to doing less, while living in a more joyful, peaceful, and healthy way. When challenges come, we often launch into a state of stress and feelings of inadequacy. In this episode guest Kate Northrup shares why it's critical that we address the HOW of dealing with a situation more than the WHAT. Nuggets of Wisdom from Kate: “The art of life is not in controlling what happens to us, but in using what happens to us.” - Gloria Steinem "What I love about this quote is it really articulates what I have been learning, not only in motherhood, but also in business, which is that we cannot actually control what happens in our lives to a large extent, but we can control our response to it, of course, and we can use what happens as fodder for learning information, to change our course of action, and as an opportunity for growth. And so, this just deeply resonates with me for that reason. " "It's not so much WHAT we do, it’s the HOW we do it. The HOW we do anything is really going to impact our results far more than WHAT that we actually do. We know that from sports psychology that the more awareness and the more consciousness we bring to our workouts for example, and the more presence we bring, the better our results will be." "Part of what’s been really amazing about scheduling things according to my cycle and also being super clear on when I have childcare and when I don’t and when I’m working and when I’m not, has been that predictability. I find myself so much more calm." "If we actually honor the gifts of the luteal phase, which is the slowing down, it’s a really great time to wrap up loose ends, to complete projects, to check things off your to-do list. It’s actually a super powerful time to address things, and get done." "We can’t control the weather, we can’t control our children, we can’t control other people, we can’t control the economy, we can’t control the government… there are so many things that we can’t control, and yet all of us crave predictability. So, for me, you know, I really crave that." Some of Kate's Favorite Things: Personal habit: "Scheduling and calendaring. I think this is a theme of our conversation. I have kept a day timer. I started using a day timer when I was 14 years old. And just having things written down so I could look at the week and kind of know what it’s going to bring and design my life according to what brings me the most joy has been an ongoing habit my entire life." Easy meal: "We always kind of have like chicken, organic chicken sausage of some kind in the fridge, because it keeps really well and my daughter really loves to eat it. So, if I just don’t have much time, I take a big huge handful of spinach and sauté it up with some organic chicken sausage, cut up in little pieces, and I eat that, and it’s delicious. And it takes me like 5 minutes." Possession: "I really love my lemon squeezer." Morning Elixir Recipe: warm water, juice from half a lemon, dash of cayenne pepper, 1/4 t. raw honey, 1 T. apple cider vinegar, and some grated fresh ginger. Kate's Favorite Books: "Carry on, Warrior by Glennon Doyle-Melton and Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott" Best advice received: "Read your baby, not a book." Kate's Happiness Formula: Decide that you want to be happy. In the moment, whenever you notice that you are veering off ,which is really easy to do, and you’ll do it all day long, look for things in your environment that are pleasing to you, or that you could feel gratitude for. Breathing. Community. Having a tribe. Investing in the people that you love and those relationships because those bring the greatest joy. A Challenge from Kate: "I would like you to try looking at your schedule, and asking yourself if there is anything that you see in the upcoming week that feels heavy or feels draining to you like is it something that you just look at and, 'Uhhh, I don’t want to do that.' And if there is something, then I would ask you to look at it and ask could that thing be cancelled? Could it be rescheduled? Could it be shifted in some way? Could that task change? Or could it be delegated? Could somebody else do it?" We would sell jewelry and bouquets of fresh wildflowers.” Fast forward some years and at the age of 18, Kate was making more income than the average teenager. After graduating from Brown University in 2001, her income for such a young age was enough to prevent her from going into the “after-college-crisis” of looking for a full-time job. But that quickly changed after she moved to NYC and rapidly got herself into more than $20K worth of debt. “I had this idea that if I acted as if I already had the income that I wanted, that somehow I magically just would. I guess I missed the part that I actually had to do something about it.” After indulging in some self-help/self-love books (listed below), Kate came to the realization that changing her mindset around her financial situation could potentially and positively get her out of this pickle. “Perhaps if I approached my financial life with the perspective of taking care of myself in a loving way instead of a place of hard-core discipline, guilt and shame that maybe I could make some lasting changes.” From that moment forward, she added “taking care of finances” to the list of other things that equal “taking care of thyself.” “Keeping up with my bookkeeping was just as important as keeping up with my pedicures.” It’s hard to pinpoint the one thing that hit home the most when talking to someone as creative and incredible as Kate, but her advice about growing no matter what stage of life or business you’re in now is something we can all learn from. “Look at your life and your business as more of a cycle than a line. It’s like the moon that’s forever rotating or the seasons…There will always be spring after the winter.” Finding work that you are passionate about and love is huge! It’s important to continually and consciously surround yourself with the people who see the most and the best in you. Where you spend your time the most will eventually become part of your outcome. Kate’s life and business wisdom is like the perfect package that I get to gift you all today! “You become a clearer channel of what needs to come through you when you take care of your vessel.” In This Episode You Will Learn: Business Entrepreneur Networking Relationship building Abundance Mentality Finances Saving Spending Success Changing Growing Fear Happiness Transformation Resources: FREE Sustainable Success Workshop Money: A Love Story, by Kate Northrup Have More by Doing Less: 3 Simple Steps to Create Space for What Matters Most, by Kate Northrup Getting to I Do, by Patricia Allen Overcoming Underearning, by Barbara Stanny Make a life, not just a living at katenorthrup.com Follow me on social media @LoriHarder on Instagram and Lori Harder on Facebook. Today on the show my dear friend Kate Northrup returns to have a super deep and interesting conversation about doing less, the BEST WAY for women to create some predictability in their lives in a fairly hectic world, allowing the Universe to help you with your to do list (this is more practical than it sounds!), and something we can't seem to get away from lately on the show - navigating transitions! Kate described that in between space as "the fertile void." How much better does that feel than, "I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do yet!"? One of my favorite things about Kate that we really have in common is the way she blends the woo woo with real mother-freaking life. This is one is packed with super useful insights, enjoy!
