Content note: perinatal suicidality In this episode Sophie speaks with midwife and Research Fellow Dr Laura Biggs, and CEO of PANDA Australia, Julie Borninkhof about the Making Sense of the Unseen partnership between the Stronger Futures CRE and the Murdoch Children's REsearch Institute, PANDA Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia, and James Cook University. In the episode you'll hear discussed key findings from ground-breaking research conducted by the team on experiences of perinatal suicidality, the first study of its kind ever to be carried out. Suicide is the leading cause of maternal death in Australia and other high-income countries and yet so far, we've known little about women's experiences of suicidality at this time in their lives. As discussed in this episode, the research identified that perinatal suicidality is driven by experiences of shame, and feelings of being disconnected and ‘defective' as a mother. We talk about how societal pressures and the perfect mother myth narrative profoundly impact women's mental health, and share stories from the research that demonstrate the profound importance of compassionate care and rehumanising relationships and care experiences for mothers. This episode is an especially important listen for all of those who work in healthcare and/or with mothers. We want to acknowledge the 139 women who shared their experiences of perinatal suicidality with the research team, as without their generosity, this research and this conversation on the podcast sharing these important findings would not be possible. … Episode webpage: https://drsophiebrock.com/podcast119 Connect with Laura on Twitter @l_biggs Follow PANDA on Facebook at facebook.com/pandanational and Instagram @pandanational Laura Biggs' email: laura.biggs@mcri.edu.au Learn more about Making Sense of the Unseen: https://www.strongerfutures.org.au/making-sense-of-the-unseen Read the journal article: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/10497323231164278 Support lines Australia - www.panda.org.au/ - 1300 726 306 @pandanational @lifelineaustralia @13yarn UK - pandasfoundation.org.uk/ - 0808 1961 776 USA - www.postpartum.net/ - Text “Help” to 800-944-4773 (EN) The EU/EEA - Mental health helpline - 116 123

In this second part of the previous episode, I delve into actionable steps parents can take to prevent their children's emotions from defining their parenting. The episode begins by encouraging parents to reflect on their feelings, sharing practical ways to explore why certain child behaviors trigger deep emotional responses. Crying is highlighted as a common trigger, with suggestions for journaling to uncover underlying beliefs. The importance of setting clear, loving boundaries to create a secure environment for children is underscored, alongside advocating for the significance of self-care to maintain energy and patience in parenting. Seeking support from therapists or trusted friends, educating oneself about child development, and developing coping strategies such as mindfulness and deep breathing are also emphasized. I advocate for encouraging emotional expression in children by guiding them to manage emotions appropriately, and maintaining open, honest communication to help children feel heard and validated. Positive reinforcement for good behavior and the value of joining supportive parenting groups are discussed, as well as strategies for dealing with societal judgment. This episode wraps up with reflections on moving forward with empathy, understanding, and balanced emotional management, aimed at fostering healthier interactions and a nurturing environment for both parents and children.PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia) supports the mental health of parents and families during pregnancy and in their first year of parenthood.panda.org.auGidget Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that exists to support the emotional wellbeing of expectant and new parents to ensure they receive timely, appropriate, and specialist care. In this episode of Thriving Parent-ing, I discuss eight critical signs that parents may be letting their children's emotions define their parenting abilities. I provided a compassionate approach, encouraging parents to allow themselves to feel and process these emotions. The episode covers the following signs: taking emotional reactions personally, creating inconsistent boundaries, overcompensating for the child's emotions, avoiding conflict, experiencing excessive guilt, constantly seeking validation, neglecting self-care, and becoming emotionally enmeshed with the child. I personally have anecdotes and professional insights gathered from 12 years of parenting three children, emphasizing that these challenges are normal and that parents are not alone. Practical steps and reflections were shared to help parents recognize these patterns and start working through them. Taking care of our emotional wellbeing is one of the best things we can do for our kids. Parenting can bring up a lot of emotions, some of which we can understand and others that may require additional support. Content Warning: This episode discusses themes that may be upsetting. We discuss postpartum depression and psychosis, suicidal ideation, overdose, severe mental health issues and disassociation. Listener discretion is advised. The postpartum period can be one of the most isolating and lonely times of someone's life. You've just grown and birthed an entire human, your hormones are all over the shop, and you're keeping your little one alive while sleep deprived and trying to remember the person you once were. It's often not a great recipe, yet we're still sold the idea of bliss being wrapped up in a 'newborn bubble'. In this episode of eat, sleep, sh*t, repeat, Kel and Kee discuss their own experiences with postpartum mental health and chat with someone whose experience led her to a psychiatric facility only weeks post-birth. This is an honest and raw conversation; let it remind you that you're never alone. If you or someone you know is in crisis and needs help now, call triple zero (000). Anxiety and depression affects up to one in five women, and one in ten men, in the perinatal period (being post birth). A fact provided by PANDA, the Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia Organisation. And a fact that seemingly keeps being kept as a hidden secret from each other, amongst new parents. There seems to be this misconception that it has to be absolutely extreme feelings or a major incident to seek help, and an ongoing dangerous theme that parents who are suffering tell themselves that “we're fine”, rather than admitting when we are not. Anxiety and depression can have more of a treacle effect rather than an immediate clear change. Where over time through inconsistent sleep, lack of consistent support, or inadequate healthy outlets for reprieve, the anxiety or depression can snowball into larger behavioural changes that effect you, and your family. So we try to understand the domino effect by talking to Megan Cassar, who shares her incredible story of her own perinatal depression that she experienced when having children, that led her to reaching out for help, and her profound career change of working for PANDA and helping others through her own learning experience. Trigger warning: this episode contains discussion of sexual abuse & eating disorders This week in the Dear Clementine inbox: My kid sister is much younger than me & my brother. She recently shared with me that when she was 16 years old one of my brother's 34 year old friends started a secret sexual relationship with her. My sister is so ashamed now, she's sworn my to secrecy. I want to honour that but also want to tell my brother and confront the offender. How can I take action without betraying her trust or undermining her authority? I get far too many comments on my appearance. It's often from other women saying I look pale or tired, asking if I've lost weight etc. How can I tackle these conversations constructively in a way that makes me feel strong but also isn't rude? I'm a childless woman in my mid 30s. I've had a long battle with disordered eating, body dysmorphia, self-harm and low self-esteem. I have come to realise that the reason I was putting off having children was because of the fear of what pregnancy & motherhood would do to my body & identity. In recent months I am starting to feel like I'm ready to have a child, but I'm terrified of falling back into a bad place with the sudden changes to my body / hormones. Is this a normal fear? Intrusive thoughts - the unwanted type that pop into your mind without notice, and are often distressing or upsetting in nature, are a common experience in motherhood. So why is nobody talking about it?One person who is not only talking about intrusive thoughts in motherhood, but sharing her research and insights to demystify this often taboo subject is Dr. Caroline Boyd. Anger and rage in Motherhood is a taboo topic that's rarely discussed. Perhaps that's due to the guilt and shame mothers feel about those moments that they ‘flip their lid'. Many will question why they feel so angry, perhaps they'll even ask what is wrong with them. This version of themselves is so foreign to that they knew pre-kids, it can be like they barely recognise themselves. If these thoughts are familiar, take heart in knowing there are(likely many!) reasons underlying them, and understanding is the first step to change. This week, Jacquie is joined by Dr. Sophie Brock, a sociologist and motherhood researcher, with a particular interest in anger and rage in motherhood. Dr. Sophie offers an important perspective on the experience; one that has catalysed ‘lightbulb moments' for mothers across the globe. During the conversation Dr. Sophie explains 'the perfect mother myth' and details how you might be falling into the anger-guilt trap. We're continuing our conversations about the findings of the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System. These findings will reshape mental health services, not just in Victoria but potentially across Australia. In this episode we talk about some of the recommendations for reform specific to carers. The royal commission findings have specific recommendations that will affect carers, including eight family and carer led centres across Victoria and elevating the leadership and promoting the valued role of family members and carers throughout the mental health and wellbeing system.Carers provide a service that would otherwise fall on the health system - in Victoria they provide $3.7 billion worth of unpaid care annually.People don't always identify as carers – they see themselves caring for someone they love. Our guests today are Karen Rule and Susan Lovegrove, two women with lived experience of caring for children (now adults) with mental health conditions and disability and they have also channelled this to provide their learnings and experience for advocacy and support to others. Karen's youngest daughter is autistic and was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder at age 17. Sue has a son with Down syndrome. Both women share some of the challenges they've encountered as parents and carers and also the ways they've grown through the experience.Karen: “In looking after myself and modelling that for my daughter, I think it's helped with her mental health as well”.Sue: “I fell into postnatal depression after the birth my youngest son and that's when I first learnt about caring for myself”.Our first episode of Get Real was about the experience of carers, and it's our most listened to episode to date, so we know that there's an interest around the challenges and needs of this very important group of people.CONTENT NOTE: if you have been affected by anything discussed in this episode, you can call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or go to lifeline.org.au Useful info:Tandem Carers - Tandem is the Victorian peak body representing family and friends supporting people living with mental health issues. Today we speak with Alex Sinickas - engineer, mother and creator of Milkdrop breast pump silicone cushions. Alex experienced a traumatic start to motherhood with a stillbirth at 20 weeks and openly shares her dark journey through grief and how it has shaped her today. Becoming a mother to daughter Greta, Alex then struggled with breastfeeding and pumping which led her to create a product to empower breastfeeding women. Alex is super clever and gave us a different perspective on motherhood as she challenges the ‘stay at home' mother paradigm. This is a trigger warning - in this episode we discuss sensitive topics such as stillbirth and intrusive thoughts, so please listen mindfully and reach out for support if you need. We've put some helpful resources in the show notes. This episode is sponsored by The Plant Fam, a family owned business on the Mornington Peninsula that offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor plants.SHOW NOTES:1. Emotions undulate ALOT as a new parent - but when does a “normal” fluctuation of emotions tip into unhealthy territory? PND (postnatal depression) is commonly talked about, but we don't share or hear alot on post partum anger - perhaps for the shame and guilt associated with it. Here we talk with counsellor and new parent specialist Jo White, and bring light to this too often swept-under-the-rug symptom of overwhelm in the first year(s) of your babie's life. Jo is Qualified social worker & Clinical advisor for PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia), 10+ years experience supporting women throughout pregnancies & postnatal period, and working in all areas of a specialist maternity hospital following an evidence based approach. Episode 39. The Valley Below, collective voices, sharing experiences of postnatal anxiety & depression through song with Oneewa McDowell from Blackbird Songwriting For national PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia) week, this episode is a little bit different. Oneewa McDowell joins me to share how her sister Shara Hala'api'api and herself came together with 12 other women to create a song, a collective voice for others who may be experiencing or have experienced postpartum mental health challenges. The raw and real, yet inspiring song is woven throughout Oneewa sharing. The song goes deep and touches on the very real aspects of postpartum mental health experiences. Please reach out for support if you are feeling sad, depressed, anxious and alone, as the voices within the song did and slowly found healing and connection. See links to hotlines to call below. For the project, Oneewa and Shara spoke with 12 women about their experiences of postnatal depression & anxiety. The aim was to honour and acknowledge the stories of these mothers, and to give a voice to their experiences through song. A song that we hope will reach a mother who will find she is not alone in her journey; A song that we hope will bring some comfort and understanding to a mother who is struggling; A song that may inspire a mother to tell her own story. Listen and let the song speak for itself. Oneewa and Shara want to express our deepest gratitude to the 12 mothers who have been involved in the project, for sharing their story with such honesty and openness, and for making this project possible. Also to acknowledge PANDA and the Gidget Foundation for their support in connecting us with the women involved in this project. The song was released and shared during PANDA/Perinatal Mental Health Week, 8th-14th November, 2020. If you would like to share the song also, that would be wonderful and you can share the link to the youtube video - website page - facebook Song written and performed by Shara Hala'api'api on vocals and harmonies and Oneewa McDowell on piano/keys and harmonies of Blackbird Songwriting Hotlines: PANDA 1300 726 306 Gidget Foundation 1300 851 758 Lifeline 13 11 14 To find out more about me, Shelley McClure and Pollination Mamas Website - Instagram - Facebook Disclaimer: The contents of this podcast do not constitute medical or professional advice, do not reflect the opinions of this business, any of its parent companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, promotional sponsors, or advertising agencies, and do not create any type of patient-physician relationship or other professional relationship between the audience and presenters. There’s a balance to how it all works out. We’re not prepared for this shit ever…when it comes. I guess that’s what makes us human. Perinatal depression and anxiety is experienced by 1 in 5 new mother's and 1 in 10 new fathers/partners. Having a baby is a big change for a mother and their partner. Not only will the baby impact the mother physically, emotionally, socially and their relationships, it will also impact hormones and the mental space of both the mother and their partner. We speak with Julie Borninkhof, CEO of Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia (PANDA) about this transition. PANDA offer the only national helpline focusing on perinatal anxiety and depression. Julie reflects on what they've observed and heard from mothers, partners and friends via their support line as well as the services available to new families. First Chrissy Teigen reminded us all to keep up to date with breast checks and cervical screening during the pandemic, and now Chrissy has the world talking about miscarriage. Who doesn't have a girl crush on this brave woman? We are at once devastated and inspired by Chrissy speaking so bravely about the heartbreaking loss of baby Jack. Let's continue the conversation and provide support to our friends and community who are also suffering from loss.Useful resources:http://bit.ly/WHMmiscarriagehttp://bit.ly/WHMpodcastwendyhttp://bit.ly/WHMpodcastCKhttp://bit.ly/WHMpodcastMiscarriage1http://bit.ly/WHMpodcastHMhttp://bit.ly/WHMpodcastZMAUSTRALIA:Pregnancy loss support:Sands: 1300 072 637Bears of Hope: 1300 114 673Federal Government's Pregnancy, Birth and Baby hotline: 1800 882 436Lifeline Crisis Support: 13 11 14Beyond Blue: Depression and anxiety support: 1300 22 46 36Men's Line: 1300 78 99 78Headspace: Youth Mental Health Foundation: see headspace.org.au for your local centreGidget Foundation: https://gidgetfoundation.org.auPANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia): https://www.panda.org.auFind us on Instagram - @knockeduppodcastJoin our community! A few years ago I met Lou McCann while interviewing her for a job. The job didn't end up happening but a wonderful friendship did. Formalities aside, it was in talking with Lou that I heard about a brilliant idea she had. It was inspired, it was important and it had the potential to change lives. So we sat down and discussed it further and I encouraged her to make it happen despite the fear. I could see how important this was to Lou and the people she would go on to support. Soon after, Moody was launched and 4 years later, we sat down to chat about how it's all played out since. Lou wears her heart on her sleeve and doesn't hold back sharing the challenges, the doubts, fears and frustrations she's experienced through launching this business, starting a family, losing her mother and riding out lockdown in Melbourne. She also shares the reasons why this means so much to her and the motivation for it all. It's powerful stuff. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did and find some inspiration to go do that thing you're being drawn to. Check out Moody's website here.Follow the Moody story on Instagram. Here's a link to Royal Women's Centre for Women's Mental Heath. This week we are joined by the awesome Dr Annie McDougall. We chat about life leading into research and the choice to move on to something new. Annie is also currently volunteering at the amazing PANDA. An organization dedicated to supporting those dealing with Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia. If matrescence is the transformation of a woman as she becomes a mother - is there something called 'patrescence' for the dads?Do men go through a similar identity shift? This is something I am constantly asked.Of course, the transition a woman goes through is unique - her transformation is physical, emotional, economic, social and spiritual. There is nothing it does not touch. But if we are to revolutionise the way we support and honour the transition into motherhood, do we also need to consider the changes a father goes through that might also have been overlooked and missed? If you've ever wanted to better understand how a man feels about fatherhood, felt resentment or anger towards your partner as you figure out parenting, or tried to support a man in early parenthood, this interview is for you.PANDA - Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia - have been gathering the data and stories of fathers, and have found that one in ten fathers will experience postnatal anxiety or depression. They have also discovered that the level of overwhelm has increased in fathers since COVID-19, just as it has in mothers. In this interview, I speak with Julie Borninkhof, the CEO of PANDA, as she highlights that it's not just the system around mothers that needs to change - it's for the Dads too.You can find out more about the support for dads, and complete a mental health checklist, at PANDA.org.au or How is Dad Going.

Initially, many Dads struggle to come to terms with what is happening in the NICU, and are not quite sure what they are required to do to help their partner, their baby, or themselves. This episode discusses some of the roles that I found to be really important during the early phases of our Journey, in and out of the NICU. There are so many awesome organisations that provided information packs for new parents in the NICU to help you along your way, including:- PANDA - Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia - https://www.panda.org.au/- Life's Little Treasures Foundation - https://lifeslittletreasures.org.au/ - Miracle Babies Foundation - https://www.miraclebabies.org.au/

When you're sleep deprived and on the steep learning curve of early parenthood it can be hard to tell if you're not coping. Terri Smith, CEO of Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia tells us what to look out for in ourselves and loved ones, and how to get help.
In today's episode, Breeana gives a very open and honest account of her struggles with severe antenatal depression in her pregnancy with her son. Breeana's pregnancy began with severe morning sickness and emotionally she became quite unwell. Supported through the mental health unit at the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne, Bree saw a physiatrist throughout the pregnancy and together they decided that the best option to support her mental health was to have an elective caesarean. The Women's were supportive of Bree's decision and allowed her to book in her delivery. Thankfully immediately after baby Ari's delivery Bree said she felt immediately better. Although Bree is extremely grateful that her recovery was quite quick, she wants to reiterate that post natal depression often follows antenatal depression. Bree also shares with us her decision to have a tubal ligation after Ari was born. She knew that she didn't want to have any more children and that she didn't feel she could possibly go through pregnancy again. Bree touches on issues of guild and shame at some of her choices she made in her pregnancy but wants to share her experience to help others support and understand antenatal depression in more detail. Issues touched upon in this episode: Depression, pregnancy termination, mental health, suicide, antenatal depression, severe morning sickness (hyperemesis gravidarum), tubal ligation, elective caesarean section, anti depressants.
