Many of us have tools that we turn to when we feel stressed, like going for a walk, vigorous exercise or practising mindfulness. One stress reduction tool that has become an increasing focus of psychological research is Emotional Freedom Techniques, also known as tapping. While some see it as fringe, increasing numbers of trials point to its benefits.

The fear of stepping out and doing something different often stops therapists in their tracks. What will people think of me? Will they attack me? Will I get in trouble?Today I'm chatting with EFT Tapping Expert Peta Stapleton, who has been a huge proponent of tapping in therapy and mental health for decades. We not only talk about the benefits of tapping for both clients and dealing with burnout as a clinician, but also dealing with that fear of doing something different and fighting for practices you believe in. For more on Petra Stapleton and EFT tapping, be sure to visit her website PetaStapleton.com

If you are new to tapping or are curious about the proof of its efficacy then this is the episode for you! In today's episode, I am honoured to talk to Dr Peta Stapleton. Based in Australia, Dr Peta has become the world's leading expert in the science behind tapping and proving its efficacy for supporting and resolving key issues that impact our general health. She has compared EFT against Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for food cravings; EFT versus CBT for Depression in Adults; EFT for academic fear and resilience in 15-year-old students; and EFT for sufferers of chronic pain. She has also led the world's first trial examining neural changes after EFT for food issues (fMRI study). It was such a brilliant conversation and really interesting to hear where she thinks EFT/Tapping is going in the coming years from a standard and recommended perspective. Key takeaways: How EFT/Tapping made its way to Dr Peta in Australia EFT was first researched in a large food cravings trial against gold standard CBT the two papers are here and here and the first fMRI research is here Dr Peta's approach to managing potential negative outcomes of her research, or anyone's opinion or judgement of Tapping. Something that can be used for any future outcome - tap on your worry and you stop attracting it Big News: Dr Peta + her team are working on a paper for the American Psychological Association to get EFT listed as evidence-based on their website - with a huge impact for EFT as a result Great advice to keep a tapping journal to reflect back on your tapping journey Definition of Tapping - it's a stress-reduction technique by stimulating acupuncture points on the face on the top half of the body while thinking about the stressful situation you are experiencing EFT is a Somatic Therapy - it's a physical therapy with a cognitive element to it, its the 4th wave of psychology - watch her Ted Talk (link below) Philosophy separated the mind and body - Doctors should treat the body and Priests/Philosophers should treat the mind - we are trying to move the field to a more integrated approach Tapping is used in hospitals, GP surgeries, national disability scheme (Government funded), midwives in Australia - it is very accepted and normalised in culture More research coming out of USA, Australia, UK and more recently Iraq, Iran, Korea, Indonesia are pumping out EFT trials, as the more, it is researched or published the more credibility it will have, and it will then attract government funding. EFT International has recently put in a grant for NICE funding to support EFT for depression It takes a new therapy 17 years to be accepted into the mainstream, with EFT we're year 16/17! The American Psychological Association published Dr Peta's Cortisol reduction (43%) research paper (mainstream journal) giving EFT a huge acknowledgement and was a big win for the therapy - that paper is here CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) has over 800 randomised trials and allows the person to become aware of the emotion and then helps them work out the belief/thought behind them - they then rehearse that out to swap into a more functional thought process. It takes CBT groups about 6 months to show an outcome where the EFT works within 6 weeks, and CBT takes more effort and practice, and may not get to the root cause of the issue. EFT helps identify the root cause of a person's issue. Once the heat of the emotion has settled down, then the memory is able to come up to present the root problem and then different techniques can be used to release the energy from that event. Tapping gives the mind and body a sense of safety and we're changing DNA expression, cortisol reduction, EUG brain scans, heart rate variability, and blood pressure - the body's physical system is changing through tapping - paper summarises all changes here 3 studies published on EFT on gene expression - found that tapping changes gene expression (whether they are turned on and off). This links to ancestral trauma. Research is here and here Dr Peta discusses an EFT trial for patients undergoing their cancer treatment - read about that here and there is also a new book here New landmark study (Iran) for a trial for Nurses working with Covid patients and taught them EFT targeting burnout. The outcomes were statistically significant, and their burnout, anxiety, and depression were reduced - read about that here and another new nurses's study here New Australian study using EFT for Sub-Acute Pain during Covid funded by the Australian Government (to intervene before the pain becomes Chronic), the pre-released data shows a significant improvement (not published yet). Dr Peta's latest research on Chronic Pain during the pandemic will be released with significant outcomes. A recent study in Iran is about to be published where an EFT trial in a hospital setting for women who had had a spontaneous miscarriage, 12 individual sessions - full paper here UK researchers are looking to research the use of EFT for PTSD after birth trauma. US study is looking at the use of EFT in the area of autism and the mothers of autistic children to manage their anxieties etc - paper here About Dr Peta: Dr Peta Stapleton has 25 years of experience as a registered Clinical and Health Psychologist and is currently an Associate Professor in Psychology at Bond University (Australia). In this fascinating interview, Dr Peta Stapelton, 2019 Australian Psychologist of the year, and global EFT expert, so generously shares the process of becoming a Hay House author. She recounts the moment, standing in the foyer at a conference, that Dr Joe Dispenza told her to write the book that would become The Science Behind Tapping. Peta is honest about the struggles she faced bringing this book to the world, including facing down criticism from her colleague and how to do justice to such a vast field. I was hooked on every word and so awed by the openness and warmth of this world leader. Peta is committed to bringing EFT to the mainstream and changing the landscape of psychological practice. This is a truly inspiring conversation on what happens when we decide to take personal action towards leading a revolution. Biography: Dr Peta Stapleton is a registered clinical/health Psychologist and Associate Professor, Bond University (Australia) who embraces evidence-based and innovative techniques. Peta is a world-leading researcher in Emotional Freedom Techniques (‘Tapping') and led a world first study investigating brain changes after EFT. She was awarded the Harvey Baker Research Award for meticulous research (Association of Comprehensive Energy Psychology), and was named 2019 Psychologist of the Year (Australian Allied Health Awards). Peta has authored The Science Behind Tapping: A Proven Stress Management Technique for the Mind and Body (Hay House), which won Best Self-Help Book (2019 Best Book Awards, American Book Fest). Book: The Science Behind Tapping: A Proven Stress Management Technique for the Mind and Body This book presents the research and evidence behind Emotional Freedom Technique in an easy-to-read manner and also offers client stories of their experiences. Emotional Freedom Techniques, or simply EFT, is a powerful way to deal with unresolved issues, transform beliefs, and reprogram yourself for greater happiness and success. Commonly called "tapping," EFT has been utilized by thousands of people worldwide. If you're holding this book, you've probably tried it at least once--or heard about it from a friend. EFT researcher and author Peta Stapleton, Ph.D., brings together the history and cutting-edge research of tapping. She also shows how tapping can be used for a whole host of ailments, including anxiety, weight issues, depression, trauma, and more. Dr. Stapleton's own groundbreaking study involving food cravings in overweight adults helped establish EFT as an effective, valid form of therapy. In The Science behind Tapping, you'll come away with a deeper understanding of what EFT is and how it can help you. The book starts with a beginner's guide to EFT, which includes tapping statements and phrases, as well as helpful charts showing the location of tapping acupoints on the face and upper body. After taking you through its many uses, Dr. Stapleton also explores the common obstacles to success with EFT--and how to combat them. In this episode we discuss: What happens when Reid Tracy, CEO of Hay House personally calls to ask you to write a book How to find the right tone for your book to speak to your audience Why printing a mock-up of your book cover will help you get it done (and Jessica Ortner thinks so too!) Welcome to Season 3 of the Tapping into Podcast. As always with this podcast, we will be exploring a variety of different modalities and topics within the spiritual, alternative and natural world in order to help us grow, heal, and ultimately live happy lives. Often when we feel something's not right, or we feel uncomfortable in our day to day, we start 'fixing' things on the outside. We look outside of ourselves for validation, for joy, for peace, for comfort, for love. Sometimes we battle on the outside, leading to an internal battle in the mind - the never-ending negative nancy that attacks us at every turn. What I've learnt is in order for things to change, we do actually need to go inwards to our internal world instead of just focusing on our external world. How when we do the inner development, it actually does reflect on the outside naturally and effortlessly. This also ties in with manifestation - how we can work with the laws of energy and frequency to attract into our lives what we want. We explore many modalities that help us navigate the internal world, like Therapy with Anna Mathur, Intuitive Eating with Lizzy Delaney, Human Design with Kay Ash Lee, Feng Shui with Patricia Lohan, Nutrition with Thalia Pellegrini, Sound healing with Emma West and I'm so excited because this season I actually get to explore Tapping / EFT with the TOP global researcher into the field, Dr Peta Stapleton. When we go internally, let go and do some healing inside, that's when the outer world really changes. I hope you love these conversations as much as I have enjoyed having them, and if you do please follow, subscribe, share and if you can write a review!! Also, if you are new to this podcast there are lots of other episodes to check out in Season 1 + 2.

The frustrating part of science is that it takes time.  It takes time to validate an experimental process, duplicate the process enough times to verify that the results are relatively predictable, and to calculate and demonstrate the statistical probabilities. When it comes to doing research about health and wellness, it's hard to wait out the time for scientific validation for compassionate reasons.  The Hippocratic oath starts with the promise to “first do no harm." But the science behind healthcare can sometimes create a dilemma.  In today's Quantum Revolution episode, we're going to be talking with Dr. Peta Stapleton who has been building a body of scientific evidence behind the Emotional Freedom Techniques, EFT.  Some of you may know it as “tapping."  What if the “doing no harm” means taking a risk and implementing something that seems anecdotally “harmless” and truly beneficial before science has time to validate a healthcare innovation?  Sometimes we have to stand in both places at once.  We can take a calculated, intentional risk to implement a process that is seemingly beneficial and - with caution - inform our clients that the science behind the choice is still emerging, while we wait for the patterns to be scientifically verified and validated over time. This process takes pioneers who are willing to take a leap of faith.  Both the practitioner and the patient have to be willing to trust that the experiment is worth trying and understand that the results are not guaranteed.  But then again, with healthcare, to a certain degree, the results are never quite guaranteed.  There is no one size fits all approach for treating people. Only statistical probabilities that treatments will work… The decision to take a calculated risk for the sake of healing is a personal choice, provided the outcome doesn't impact the well-being of others.  But, collectively, we have to understand that these calculated risks, while they may be end up being a “Hail Mary pass" on the personal level, are not scientifically valid.  While the practice of EFT tapping has not been around as long as acupuncture, one of the main components of EFT is the gentle tapping on those same energy lines, or meridians, used in acupuncture and acupressure. When combined with some current psychotherapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Exposure Therapy, tapping yields amazing results. EFT was developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s based on his study of work done by Roger Callahan in Thought Field Therapy (TFT). TFT was one of the first methods in what is now called Energy Psychology. As Craig realized the potential of this approach, he worked to refine and simplify the techniques while maintaining positive, measurable results: an evidence-based methodology. He ultimately developed a simple yet very profound set of techniques which he made available to everyone on his website emofree.com. Dr. Peta Stapleton is a registered clinical and health Psychologist and Associate Professor at Bond University (Australia) who embraces evidence-based and innovative techniques.  Dr. Stapleton is a world-leading researcher in Emotional Freedom Techniques (‘Tapping') and led a world first study investigating brain changes after EFT.  She was awarded the Harvey Baker Research Award for meticulous research (Association of Comprehensive Energy Psychology), and was named 2019 Psychologist of the Year (Australian Allied Health Awards). We are living in a paradox.  We are the manifestation of consciousness - pieces of the cosmos - encased within bodies, ruled by a mind that creates the illusion that we are separate from the cosmos - individual events that will never be repeated again in the history of all that is.  It's easy for us to think we are a dominion unto ourselves.  And yet, this paradox invites us to explore that if we are  holographic pieces of the cosmos, then the rules of the cosmos must apply to the unique and personal manifestation of the story that is our unique life - a theme we're exploring with many Quantum Revolutionaries this season. Today we are speaking with Dr. Ervin Laszlo, a philosopher and systems scientist who has published more than 101 books and over 400 articles and research papers. In this episode with Dr Peta Stapleton, we are exploring the Effective Freedom Technique (EFT) to deal with stress, anxiety, weight management concerns, chronic pain and so much more. As an outside-the-box-mind psychologist, Peta taps into her researches and studies over the decade. She shares with us the improvement she has seen using EFT in her patients. Initially, Peta's dream was to become a lawyer. As fate redirected her to find her true passion in psychology, particularly in EFT, her goal remains to find the right solution to help people. Being an expert in EFT, she sees the opportunity of this “fourth wave” therapy becoming more accessible to all. Peta believes wellness is an all-encompassing concept, and with easy tapping techniques which have been shown to leave a long-lasting improvement on our well-being. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this treatment, Peta guides the Wellness Warriors podcast host, Felicity Cohen through the tapping technique.   For transcript or to watch this episode: https://www.felicitycohen.com/tapping-eft-to-transform-wellbeing/ Show Notes: 01:39 - What took you through choosing to take the pathway to psychology? Dr Peta tells the story of how her plan to get into law redirects her into finding her lifelong passion in psychology.   04:11 - What do you think are some of the things that have shaped the change in the perception towards psychologists?  The wider community starts to have access to psychologists through the Medicare program. It used to be harder for people to access unless they were able to fund themselves or through private health insurance.   06:35 - How has EFT been used effectively with children and in a school setting?  Being recognised by the local schools, Dr Peta and her team helped implement EFT to help students and teachers manage their stress and food cravings. She explains how EFT is a very effective technique for kids as it's very easy for them to do.    10:13 - How you actually entered into the research space with regards to EFT and how did it help grow and evolve the whole movement. Originally specialised in the eating disorder space, she found that many traditional techniques weren't that effective. As she started to see more clients recovering from their eating disorders through EFT and decided to look deeper into it in her researches. She takes EFT into improving many different health issues over the last 15 years.   13:02 - With your current research project on tapping as the chronic pain intervention, what is your findings? In her most recent research in 2020, Dr Peta found that there's an absolute reduction in the severity of pain, psychological things like anxiety and depression respond positive as well as the overall quality of life.     17:26 - What have you experienced implementing EFT into the bariatric patient population?  Through her research and working with bariatric patients over the decade, Dr Peta says she has seen a profound impact on those patients using EFT as part of their treatment.    18:58 - Why do you call this type of treatment the fourth wave?  Dr Peta explains that the recent discoveries within the therapy space have shifted into combining a whole range of treatments that involve the semantic and movements to treat patients in different areas.   22:06 - As far as the fourth wave evolution and just continuing its growth, what's the international landscape look like? And how have you impacted that through your research?  Dr Peta shares with us the fact that these practices are becoming more and more recognised worldwide. This includes having EFT being accepted as a safe therapy for veterans and PTSD sufferers.    24:04 - Dr Peta guides us through how quick and effective the treatment is, as experienced first-hand by the host, Felicity Cohen, in this episode.   29:15 - Where would you like to go next with EFT and what areas of research do you feel have been untapped?  Chronic pain space would be Dr Peta's main focus for a while as it's an extremely emerging area currently. She would also love to seek to have EFT approved as a Medicare item so that more would have access to the therapy.    31:11 - Have you seen EFT patients have a reduction in their medications? In a previous study, they have seen the impact of tapping on the vagal efficiency in people. They also track many physiological measurements as well as people history of medications and how that shifts over time.    33:29 - What does wellness mean to you?  To Dr Peta, wellness is an all-encompassing state of mind.

She shares: "I will offer tips and information about how Emotional Freedom Techniques can help calm the nervous system, facilitate clarity, and eliminate unhelpful beliefs (i.e., “If I say no, they won't like me... .” Terry Hernon is an EFT practitioner who specializes in helping her clients find their voices and stand up for themselves. If you are a woman addicted or dependent on alcohol this podcast is for you.If you numb your pain with wine, booze or beer this podcast is for you.If you can't stop at two drinks this podcast is for you.Jules Vandermaat and Katie Walker have created a program for women dependent on alcohol called Sober October. Jules and Katie are both certified advanced practitioners in Emotional Freedom Techniques EFT/tapping.Jules Vandermaat is an Accredited Certified Advanced EFT Practitioner with EFT International, and a highly qualified Social Worker and therapist with over 30 years of combined experience. She specialises in helping people recover from trauma, and in particular she works with those who have experienced the trauma of sexual abuse. She has a thriving private practice in Coffs Harbour, Australia, working with people from around the world. Jules is also an Evidence Based EFT Trainer with Dr Peta Stapleton's team, teaching health professionals about the science and research behind EFT tapping and how to successfully incorporate it into their therapy practice.Jules first discovered EFT whilst working at the Sexual Assault Service. She was on the verge of burn out at the time, as she found that the traditional talk therapies in which she was trained in were just not helping her clients with their trauma. It was so clear in that setting that the trauma was living in the bodies of her clients, and many of them were barely able to talk about what happened to them, no matter what other therapies they had tried. The cognitive based therapies were not helpful, and could even be harmful, but as a somatic modality, EFT made a huge difference, bringing the body back in to therapy. Since discovering EFT, Jules has never looked back, as she watched it safely and gently transform the lives of the clients she worked with, some of whom had suffered for decades with PTSD, anxiety, shame and self-blame. JulieVandermaat@outlook.comTogether Jules and Katie love teaching people the power of EFT, and they share lots of great information, tips and  tools for reducing stress, anxiety and cravings so people can feel good naturally without needing alcohol to calm themselves  down or lift themselves up.  Katie Walker is an Advanced Certified EFT Practitioner (EFT International and EFT Universe), a Certified EFT Relationship Coach and Counsellor.
