What happens when Falk gets stuck in a screwball comedy? Can Falk weed out the humans from the androids? Do androids dream of His Girl Friday? Listen to find out!Do Androids Dream of His Girl Friday? , episode 98 of This Gun in My Hand, was manufactured not by the Tyrell Corporation but by Rob Northrup, using dialogue from the 1940 public domain film His Girl Friday, which was adapted from the 1928 public domain play The Front Page. The part of Walter Burns was played by Cary Grant, with Rosalind Russell as Hildy Johnson and Ralph Bellamy as Bruce Baldwin. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. How do I survive a screwball comedy? With This Gun in My Hand!Show Notes:1. The 1940 film His Girl Friday was adapted from a 1928 stage play titled The Front Page, both in the public domain. Dialogue in this episode was taken from His Girl Friday. (Link below.) It's excellent but has (CONTENT WARNING) the kind of racism and sexism you might expect in a 1940 film. There's also a one hour Lux Radio Theater adaptation starring Fred MacMurray and Claudette Colbert; a Screen Guild Theater radio adaptation starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell squeezed down into a half hour; and an even more offensive, grittier 1970 film of The Front Page starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. And there's a 1931 film version of The Front Page which I have yet to watch.https://archive.org/details/his_girl_fridayCredits:The opening music clip was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), with transitional music from His Girl Friday (1940) and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), all films in the public domain. Most of the music and sound effects used in the episode are modified or incomplete versions of the originals. The two women saying “pixielated” were from the Campbell Playhouse radio adaptation of “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,” broadcast February 11, 1940, public domain. The Invisible Man (1933), The Invisible Man Returns (1940), and The Invisible Man's Revenge (1944). In the pantheon of Universal Classic Monsters, some might say the Invisible Man is the least terrifying in the monster heritage, or maybe even bordering on if they even belong in the horror genre. In this episode, we're going to delve into three of the films in Universal's Invisible series, for the most part, stay within the horror genre, though, that argument will be addressed as well! We're leaving out The Invisible Woman and Invisible Agent, since they are pretty much either a comedy or a war time action film. Join us as we try to "see" more into these films that maybe aren't as "transparent" to the casual viewer who might have missed something. Or maybe we're seeing too much and not finding them too entertaining. Want to know? You'll have to listen and find out! Movies mentioned in this episode: Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), Abbott & Costello Meet the Invisible Man (1951), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Hollow Man (2000), Invisible Agent (1942), The Invisible Man (1933), The Invisible Man (2020), The Invisible Man Return (1940), The Invisible Man's Revenge (1944), The Invisible Woman (1940), The Mummy (1932), The Mummy's Hand (1940), Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932), The Phantom Creeps (1939), The Phantom of the Opera (1943), Rio Bravo (1959), The Unseen (2016), The Wolf Man (1941)

In this new chapter we examine an overlooked entry in the Universal horror family, the 1939 film serial The Phantom Creeps starring Bela Lugosi and an 8 foot tall killer robot!
Django and Nudo are joined by Kitty Lash at Castle Cultpix to reminisce about the greatest screen Dracula of all time, Bela Lugosi. It all started in Lyon, where Django and Smut where attending the MIFC convention, where they met the Hungarian Film Institute, who promised them the oldest known silent film footage of Bela Lugosi on the day he would have turned 140.We start off with a clip from "The Phantom Creeps" (1939), the 12-part cinema serial where Bela plays a mad inventor planning on releasing an army of robots to rule the world - “It can make me the most powerful man in the world.” In this interview Bela talks about being born in Hungary but now being an American, as well as how playing Dracula depresses him. He had to leave post-war Hungary for starting an actors' union and remained politically active, but also an American patriot. Here he is encouraging people to donate blood during World War Two. Yet because of his accent he not only played Central European bloodsuckers but also Nazi's, for example in "Black Dragons" (1941), a quickie thriller in the style of "The Manchurian Candidate". He did win recognition as "one of the finest actors to come out of Europe," in this 1951 interview, where he talks about being typecast and the kind of roles he had back in Hungary. He also gave this very candid interview after he was in rehab in 1955 to deal with opioid and alcohol addiction. Yet his son Bela George Lugosi Jr has spoken about addiction being “the biggest misconception about his father” and a “focus on negative aspects” of his life. Part of the reason for this is Tim Burton's film "Ed Wood" (1994), which imagines how Ed Wood first met Bela Lugosi. Johnny Depp's Ed Wood is in awe of Bela, though he himself feels he is a has-been. “Now, no one gives two fucks for Bela.” Marin Landau discusses the process of becoming Bela, a role that won him an Oscar, and his admiration for him. “In junk movies he was BRILLIANT."Bela did get to play comedy in one of our favourite films, “Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla” (1951), with nightclub comedians Duke Mitchell and Sammy Petrillo in roles approximating Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. We end up with a mashup of the classic punk-goth song “Bela Lugosi's Dead”, both the original Bauhaus version and the Nouvelle Vague version. We also have our longest ever Spotify playlist (6h23m), with more cover versions than you can shake a wooden stake at, but also many other tracks about or name checking Bela Lugosi.
In 1934 Chicago was the center for radio production. Writer and director Wyllis Cooper created a program for NBC affiliate WENR that drastically altered the tone of horror. Cooper had been writing advertising copy in the late 1920s when he entered radio, working first as a continuity editor, then for NBC's Empire Builders. His idea was to offer listeners a late-night terror program, at a time when other stations were mostly airing music. It emphasized crime thrillers and the supernatural. The first series of shows were fifteen minutes and ran on Wednesdays at midnight to local audiences. It was called Lights Out. In April, the series expanded to a half-hour. The following year, it went national. Cooper stayed on until 1936 when he left to write film scripts in Los Angeles. He wrote The Phantom Creeps and The Son of Frankenstein before returning for the final season of The Campbell Playhouse on CBS and The Army Hour on NBC. Then in the Spring of 1947 a new opportunity arose in New York. Quiet Please debuted on Sunday June 8th, 1947 at 3:30PM over the Mutual Broadcasting System. Quiet Please elevated the genre to high art. For the weekly lead, Cooper cast Ernest Chappell, The Campbell Playhouse announcer. He proved a natural, playing Scotsman, oil riggers, drunks, and archaeologists. They were every-men who got tied up in the otherworldly. Few supporting voices could be afforded or deployed. Those few were part of New York radio's elite like Frank and Claudia Morgan. The cast was told to play it straight. It resulted in an almost dream-like study in horror, like on October 27th, 1947 when Quiet Please presented “Don't Tell Me About Halloween.” In March of 1948, CBS executive Davidson Taylor sent an internal memo expressing his interest in purchasing the Mutual-sustained series for CBS. Taylor had a keen eye for talent, but nothing materialized. Quiet Please shifted to ABC in September of 1948, but never found sponsorship and went off the air on June 25th, 1949.

What else could you want? Well better pacing. But, it also stars Bella Lugosi! So it gets points back - and it inspired the Star Wars crawl. The Phantom Creeps - it is someting Sci-Fi Malady RSS
