Business Owners & Entrepreneurs Podcast with Peter Boolkah | Business Coach | The Transition Guy®
For many of us, our homes have turned into workspaces since the pandemic started. And while employee burnout isn't unheard of, remote working burnout seems to be an even more rampant problem that's been on the rise since. Today, I talk to Phil Strazzulla of SelectSoftware Reviews about work from home burnout, and how we can help employees better cope with it.One of the main consequences of the pandemic was how it accelerated the transition to remote work for a lot of businesses. While this is a positive change for a lot of companies in many ways, it has also had some adverse effects. This rapid adjustment to the change in work setup has undoubtedly had an effect on employees in the form of work from home burnout, not to mention the additional stresses to the average worker – fear of the Corona Virus, the global recession, the war in Ukraine – these have all made coping with remote working burnout an even more challenging task. All these factors together have indeed taken employee burnout to a whole new level. And as business leaders, it's our responsibility to try and mitigate this.Stay tuned to hear more of my conversation with Phil Strazzulla of SelectSoftware Reviews, as we dive deep into the problem of remote working burnout or work from home burnout in today's increasingly digital workplace.--------------------CONNECT WITH PETER BOOLKAH:--------------------http://www.Boolkah.comhttps://www.facebook.com/Boolkahhttps://www.instagram.com/pboolkah/https://www.linkedin.com/in/boolkahhttps://twitter.com/boolkah--------------------ABOUT PETER BOOLKAH--------------------Peter Boolkah (AKA The Transition Guy) is the World's #1 Business Transition Coach whose main passion in life is to work with talented and high performing business owners who are in the process of creating exciting, high growth businesses. At least an HOUR worth of time block is enough to just allow yourself, to work well, feel well, and focus well to finish one task at a timeThat is what we call DEEP WORK: the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. Ryan and Phil talk about today's market, which is the most challenging market they have ever seen. This is due to many factors including the pandemic, the great resignation, and remote work. It is very much a candidates' market, and employers need to adapt their processes to be more candidate-friendly — or they will lose out on attracting top talent. Technology -- we absolutely rely on it but sometimes we can feel overwhelmed by it. In this podcast episode, Samm chats with Phil Strazzulla, an HR technology expert, all about how to approach integrating technology into our organizations and lives while actually enhancing the humanity in our processes. HR Technology has become the go-to solution for many HR Departments of One. It makes sense to look to software to serve as a form of delegation to improve overall efficiency. However, it is important to keep in mind that when we invite new technology into our organizations, it will impact the balance of energy. Our hope is that it preserves it, but we also have discovered that some of the side effects of increased use of technology actually rapidly deplete our energy and negatively impact overall wellness. So what is that balance? Phil helps us to get strategic about the process of integrating new systems and inspires us to use HR technology to enhance the experience our employees, customers and job candidates have with our organizations. Phil Strazzulla starts off providing a few great ideas to help us focus on self care and make time for creativity. He continues to tell us the decision he made that changed the trajectory of his life: Middle school wrestling. Yep, you read that right! Trying out for a sport that he wasn't good at and failing at it for a couple years changed his life. Phil tells us that he was a shy, skinny kid and he knew he wanted to boost his confidence and thought wrestling could help him. He wasn't good at wrestling but also wasn't a quitter so he pushed forward. Then Freshman year he started winning and he worked even harder. This confidence boost helped him throughout his career as well as his hard work. He reminds us that being resilient and working hard even when you may not think you have the talent or are told you have talent is one of the keys to success. We all need to work hard. His coaching to others: Think outside of yourself and be a third party especially during high emotional situations. Don't take every piece of advice you hear. And, most importantly, believe in yourself. Phil is a former venture investor turned HR Tech entrepreneur. My Future Business Interview with PHIL STRAZZULLA #philstrazzulla #selectsoftwarereviews Hi, and welcome to the show! On today's My Future Business Show I have the pleasure of spending time with founder and CEO at Select Software Reviews PHIL STRAZZULLA. To give some context, in Phil's own words, not only is he a software geek, he's a software engineer and investor. He loves coding, and still enjoys writing code when the need arises. Phil started Select Software Reviews because he could see a gap in the market. The opportunity he noticed was how hard it was becoming to find, review and invest in the right software for businesses. To date, Phil has founded two bootstrapped B2B startups, and led sales on both. As an introvert, when starting out, Phil had almost no sales experience. As you will hear on the call, with time comes experience, and with experience comes sales. Throughout the call, Phil shares insights into some of the best way for founders to make sales. In fact, Phil has created an in-depth post on this topic, which you can find at philstrazzulla.com. Phil shares many important points about making sales as a founder, and gives sage advice on mentorship, buyer persona's, personal development, and much more. One of the key things that I took away from the call, is to always stay focused on the end goal. This is despite the fact that you may not achieve any results for months. This is about tenacity, it's about persistence, and it's about celebrating early successes that give you the drive to keep pushing forward. And what can be really hard especially when you are starting off is that these people are very credentialled and somebody may be sold their company for a hundred million dollars or $1 billion or they took it public and they are telling you a thing and they just don't have the perspective to understand that that's actually not relevant for your business or could be bad advice. And so, understanding other folks bias is super, super hard to do however very, very impactful. And of course, you have to understand your own bias. Are you cheap? Are you liberal with your money? Are you somebody who kind of swings for the fences? Are you overly analytical question? All these things have to be reined in because all of your strengths that you should supercharge can also be things that can lead to your detriment. And so, try to be introspective, try to have advisers who will tell you to your face how you are thinking, correctly or incorrectly”…[Listen for More] Click Here for Show Notes To Listen or to Get the Show Notes go to https://wp.me/p6Tf4b-7qK
There’s nothing like a pandemic to abruptly change the way companies hire workers. With millions of people forced to shelter place and many business on lock-down, the traditional job interview is impractical and nearly impossible. Video interviews have suddenly become the new normal? What are best practices? Should you just use Are Zoom, Skype, and Google Hangouts? To answer these questions, Phil Strazzulla from Select Software Reviews, an HR technology research company, joined the show.
To say the shift hit work plans this week would be a gross understatement. Thanks to the Covid-19 response, millions of people without warning began working from home - or not working at all. But despite the threat of massive layoffs hanging over the heads of millions of workers, many industries (healthcare, distribution, transportation) are hiring like crazy. Unfortunately, social distancing makes the traditional interview impractical and nearly impossible. Welcome video interviewing. Has its time come? Will video interviews become the new normal? What are the best practices? How should you select the best platform and technology for your company? To answer these questions and more, we invited Phil Strazzulla from Select Software Reviews, an HR technology research company, to join the show.

Phil Strazzulla is the founder of NextWave Hire, along with a new side project Select Software Reviews. Before that, he was a student at Harvard Business School and previously worked as a venture capital investor at Bessemer Venture Partners. However, I wanted to learn more about the inspiration behind his career in tech. Phil was originally from Cohasset, MA, where he grew up, wrestled, and then moved on to NYU to study finance and explore NYC. After getting his MBA from Harvard, Phil started SelectSoftware as a side-hustle, which is a site dedicated to providing in-depth and unbiased reviews of business software. SelectSoftware is an excellent example that entrepreneurs don't need a fancy business idea to create a sustainable business that reaches six figures a month. In today's episode, we discuss his practical tips on starting and growing a side-hustle. I also learn more about how he began his career as a self-taught coder who bootstrapped his way to tech startup success. I also learn more about how there is an average of 10 hours of research required before businesses buy HR Software. But how Select Software Reviews can reduce this through unbiased, expert research that relies heavily on the expertise of forward-thinking users from the global community.
This week we welcome Phil Strazzulla. Phil has an interesting journey as a startup CEO, speaker, educator, mentor, and investor. Phil always knew he wanted to go into business and be a CEO, but what happens when that career vision seems stalled out before you really get started? Phil started in college interning at a start-up, and always wanted to be an entrepreneur. He went into investment banking after school -- but that career goal seemed far away when he got laid off in 2008. At that point, what do you do? Phil was able to do some internships and anything else he could volunteer for to get experience. He blogged and worked on his personal brand in tech and investing. Later, he got a job with a venture capital firm, went to business school, taught himself to code, and now is on his second successful start-up, Select Software Reviews, which helps HR departments navigate the landscape of technology solutions. Phil’s a planner, but we wanted to know what he was able to plan, and where he had to change and adapt. While he predicted as a kid that he’d go to Harvard for his MBA and be a CEO, he felt like he followed what he was drawn to, and kept an open mind when his original plan (investment banking, investing, start-up) was derailed by getting laid off early in his career. Kat asked about the gifts of being laid off. It turns out that Phil didn't like his banking job, where he was working 24/7. In fact, he was relieved to find what he really wanted -- by not having a smoothly-paved path through the world of finance and business -- as compared to the "ideal" path that younger Phil had laid out. Phil was out of work for a year. It was emotionally challenging. He watched his peers who were working, while he felt left behind. He took unpaid internships, lived on unemployment, and found mentors that helped rebuild his confidence. This allowed him to build skills, network and get job offers. Phil actually turned down some jobs until he got what he really wanted: a job he interviewed for for months. The experience helped Phil access his own creativity and resilience. Now Phil is a mentor to others. Phil talks about looking his experience looking a job, and treating that search like a job! Going to “work,” dressing for work, improving your skills, keeping a spreadsheet of all the jobs you’re looking at. Treating it like sales process, and making sure you “hit your numbers” and keep tricking yourself into knowing that there is a job and a mentor out there for you. We ask who good mentees are for Phil and how he finds them. One example is a client who asked him to read business essays. Phil makes sure the people he mentors are open to feedback to be a good fit for him to work with. He talks about differentiating what you do: write, make videos, go to events, blog, and develop a personal brand to stand out from your resume, especially if you have a gap on your resume. For junior folks, pick something you think is interesting to you and try it out. Do the best you can, meet people, get referrals and get to know yourself. Try things and see what you think, and the reflect and be aware as you go through the experience. When you are job searching, although it's hard, you build so many communication skills: you get tougher, you learn how to approach people, how to connect, and how to follow up. All these are great entrepreneurial skills. “There’s always a silver lining, and if you keep focusing on that, you’re going to enjoy it more, learn more and have better outcomes.” For the last 6 years, Phil has been in the world of HR software. He finds HR to be the intersection of people, careers and business and sees how buying the right HR software can help your career or hurt it. Phil also keeps things interesting by investing and following up with other hobbies. You can find him at www.selectsoftwarereviews.com, www.philstrazzulla.com and on Linkedin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/philstrazzulla/) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/philstrazzulla).

The race for talent is on! Winning the race means "HR and recruiters must become marketers," says our guest Phil Strazzulla, founder of NextWave Hire. That seems easy enough to say but up until recently, marketing was like a 4-letter word in HR circles. Phil is an inbound marketing fanatic , determined to change how companies recruit. Phil shared insights into how inbound recruiting is reshaping recruiting and offered low-hanging solutions for talent acquisition, perfect for small biz. This show is broadcast live on Wednesday's at 1PM ET on W4CY Radio – (www.w4cy.com) part of Talk 4 Radio (http://www.talk4radio.com/) on the Talk 4 Media Network (http://www.talk4media.com/).
Today we’re talking with Phil Strazzulla, CEO and Founder of the recruitment marketing company, Next Wave Hire, and creator of the YouTube series “Whiteboard Wednesdays”. Firstly, if you haven’t watched Whiteboard Wednesdays, you should. Whiteboard Wednesdays started as a New Year’s Resolution and became a hit for viewers with over 252,475 watches. Stemming from conversations that Phil has had with recruiters, HR departments, and other business minds, he spends 2 minutes in front of a whiteboard each week to talk about recruitment concepts in relation to marketing. Covering topics such as using Facebook ads for marketing, HR chatbots, SEO and its relation to talent acquisition, and the myriad of other subjects that recruiters and HR are currently struggling with, Phill dissects these topics and offers solutions. Phil noted the need for a company like Next Wave when he saw how top talent was getting continuously bombarded by recruiters with generic or lifeless emails and cold calls. By using these archaic methods, recruiters were turning off more candidates than they were actually recruiting. So, he set out to teach recruitment departments how to give talent something useful that will cause them to notice you and be turned from a passive seeker to a new hire. Whether this something is an open source project, career advice, or an invitation to a workplace mixer, you have to think of recruitment in the same way that you would marketing. Show potential candidates the culture of your company, what you have to offer them, and why they should notice you. Phil explains Inbound Recruiting with this example, “If Nike wants you to buy their new sneakers, they’re not going to send someone to your door. They’re going to put out interesting content regarding the sneakers, content such as ads with Usain Bolt that make you feel aspirational while explaining the value proposition of the shoe are what consumers are sold on.” For Inbound Recruiting, you’re marketing the company as a place to work. Your product is your company and you need to show the value proposition of its workplace. Next Wave teaches recruiters and HR departments how to do this by showing them how to build relationships with potential top talent and establish a culture and buzz for their workplace. Starting with establishing a talent community on a business's website, Next Wave then encourages employees to drive the company brand and talent to the community by sharing news about the company, its events, and culture on social media platforms. Over time, candidates that started as passive job-seekers come to a place where they are ready to transition to a new company and career. With Next Wave, the foundation and relationship has already been set for these talented individuals to seamlessly move into the recruitment process. Keith also added this great point, “Recruitment is just like sales, treat your potential new hires like your sales team treats potential new clients.” Of course, there are CEO’s who object to the idea of their recruiters using work time for social media and company related engagement. Phil deals with these objections by showing them data and hard facts. If you don’t think that potential candidates are looking through Facebook or Linkedin and that traditional methods of recruitment are still the best way to go, then you’re going to miss out on top talent opportunities. To connect with Phil and Next Wave visit: https://nextwavehire.com/
In this episode of "On the Line," Phil Strazzulla and Yash Ambardekar from NextWave Hire join Joe Mullings and Christina K. in the studio to discuss technology in the hiring narrative. Specifically, they dive into how software and AI are helping HR streamline the hiring process, allowing professionals to focus on the creative storytelling that is vital to capturing candidates' attention.
Phil Strazzulla's LinkedIn headline reads "Helping HR become Marketers” - I wanted to ask him a few questions around this and how we can build employer brand by using employee stories. Questions for Phil: Tell us about Nextwave Hire and what you do there? What is employee authored content? Is it similar to Glassdoor? A day in the life of type of content? Why is it important? What’s a step-by-step to success with it? What are the common mistakes companies make? How can we measure ROI on this? What companies are doing it right? What’s the next big thing? Where can people connect with you? Read podcast articles & subscribe here: http://employerbrandingpodcast.com
In my work as a consultant, I’m constantly seeing examples of employers whose recruitment marketing and employer brand activity is ineffectual because they are lacking content from their employees that illustrates what working for them is really like. Generating, managing and optimizing this kind of content is hard and can potentially take up huge amounts of resource. Unsurprisingly then we are now seeing a growing number technology companies providing products and services to help employer brand managers in this area. My guest on this episode of the podcast is Phil Strazzulla the Founder and CEO of LifeGuides, a company that is helping employers capture and tell their employees stories. In the interview we discuss: • The advantages of using “Employee Authored Content” • Some of the reasons employers struggle in this area • What makes great employee content and the vital importance of authenticity • The problem with “Frankenstein” job descriptions • How data insights can help Phil also gives us examples of companies who are doing this well and offers his advice on how to get started.
