City says it was not notified or involved U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers raided a residence on North Elm Street in Beacon on the morning of Friday (June 20), according to a statement issued by Mayor Lee Kyriacou. City officials said they do not know who ICE detained. It is unclear whether a judicial warrant was presented or the nature of any charges. ICE did not respond to a request from The Current for information. "I want to make clear that at no time leading up to this incident did city staff, including our Police Department, have any notice of or involvement in ICE operations," Kyriacou said. "As a city, we remain committed to our safe, inclusive community policy, to preserving rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and to avoiding any policies which engender fear among law-abiding families." The mayor said his office had been informed about the raid by residents and that Police Chief Tom Figlia confirmed with the Federal Bureau of Investigation that an ICE operation had occurred. Figlia said this week that ICE returned the following day (June 21), but he did not know if anyone was detained. Mayor's Statement Earlier today, my office was informed by several residents of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in the City of Beacon. I want to make clear that at no time leading up to this incident did city staff, including our Police Department, have any notice of or involvement in ICE operations. As a city, we remain committed to our safe, inclusive community policy, to preserving rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, and to avoiding any policies which engender fear among law-abiding families. Our city's police chief was able to confirm with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, after the fact, that an ICE operation occurred in Beacon earlier this morning. At this time, the city has no information as to the identity of the individual who was arrested or detained, the nature of the charges, or whether a judicial warrant was presented or not. The City of Beacon also has no information as to the current location of the person who was arrested or detained. Our Police Department is actively seeking further information regarding the situation at this time. Lee Kyriacou, Mayor, City of Beacon Andrew Canaday, a Beacon resident, wrote in a comment posted below that he witnessed the raid. "ICE, the FBI and what appeared to be one police officer (not from the City of Beacon) staked out the house, parked at different locations along the street around 6 a.m., presumably to apprehend him on his morning commute," he wrote. The federal agents were armed and wearing body armor, Canaday wrote. He declined further comment. Once news of the action circulated, hundreds of residents in Beacon and surrounding areas created an "unofficial neighborhood watch," according to one participant who asked not to be identified. They are concerned that ICE is "confronting and taking our community members from their homes without due process," the person said. Volunteers have circulated pocket-sized cards with phrases such as "I do not give you permission to enter my home" and "I choose to exercise my constitutional rights" in English and Spanish. A second card offers tips for bystanders, such as how to observe safely, when to speak up and how to document what they see if witnessing a person being detained. Joseph Lavetsky, an immigration attorney in Beacon, said that people who have been in the U.S. for less than two years, or who don't have proof that they've been in the country for more than two years, are the most at risk because they could be subject to expedited removal. If a person is detained, they will be held pending a bond hearing in an immigration court, he said, which would not take place in Beacon. The nonprofit New York Legal Assistance Group has created Designation of Standby Guardian forms for at-risk immigrants who have children to file in Surrogate Court or Family Court. Lavetsky noted that D...

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is undergoing a major transition after lawmakers and Gov. Mike Kehoe reinstated a gubernatorial board that oversees the agency. But the changes for the police department go beyond the reimposition of the state board. Attorney General Andrew Bailey's office will now be in charge of defending the St. Louis Police Department in certain civil litigation cases. That's because Bailey's office is in charge of defending state agencies against claims to the state's legal defense fund. “The legal expense fund is really the insurance policy for the state,” Bailey said in an interview on Wednesday. “So any claims enumerated in that statute that are in connection with the public officials duties are covered by [the fund] … the state's law firm, the Missouri Attorney General's Office, defends against them.”

In this encore episode of The Voice of Retail from January 2025, I'm joined by Sergeant Craig Reynolds and Arezo Zarrabian, Senior Crime Analyst at the Vancouver Police Department, for an exclusive look inside Project Barcode—a pioneering effort to combat organized retail crime in Vancouver.Sparked by a staggering 260% increase in retail theft involving weapons, Project Barcode was launched in 2021 and has evolved into a city-wide operation. Combining targeted police action, strategic analytics, and cross-agency collaboration, the project has become a blueprint for combating retail crime across Canada—and beyond.Craig and Arezo take us behind the scenes of Barcode's design and deployment. With more than 1,400 arrests, 166 repeat offenders apprehended, and $1.4 million in goods and criminal assets recovered, Project Barcode is delivering measurable results. Arezo's data-driven insights guide every phase—from identifying hotspots by time and geography, to profiling offender patterns and predicting retail theft surges. One key innovation? Deploying officers based on real-time trends, such as peak theft hours or common entry points into the city.Yet the team doesn't just tackle frontline offenders. A major focus is upstream—targeting fences and organized resellers who drive demand for stolen goods. With the help of anti-fencing units and civil forfeiture laws, Project Barcode has disrupted the black-market supply chain while building stronger partnerships with the retail community.Craig and Arezo also share deeply human perspectives on the systemic issues behind the crimes: homelessness, addiction, lack of mental health support, and underfunded social services. They stress that many offenders are exploited and desperate—often stealing not out of greed, but obligation to pay off debts. They advocate for wraparound solutions that go beyond law enforcement, including judicial reform, community policing, and better data sharing. The episode closes with a look ahead: more coordination, smarter deployment, and a renewed call for nationwide efforts to recognize retail crime as a serious threat to public safety and economic stability. If you're a retailer, policymaker, or security professional, this is essential listening on how cities can combine compassion, innovation, and accountability to fight retail crime—and win. When Bob Chappell vanished from his yacht in Hobart, suspicion quickly turned on his partner, Sue Neill-Fraser, an unassuming woman who soon found herself at the centre of one of Australia’s most controversial murder cases. But behind the headlines lies a deeper story - one of forensic failure, investigative tunnel vision, and a conviction that may never have happened if all the available avenues had been investigated. In this episode, former detective Colin McLaren unpacks the crucial DNA evidence, the overlooked clues on the yacht, and the questions raised by a mysterious yellow Ford. This is a story about how forensics should work, and what happens when it doesn’t. Note: Sue Neill-Fraser was found guilty by a Supreme Court jury; her appeal was dismissed, and a Coroner’s investigation, which reviewed all the available evidence, supported the findings of the criminal proceedings. Tasmania Police stand by the integrity and thoroughness of the investigation, and the efforts of the investigation team, including the forensic experts, and the prosecution of the case by the office of the DPP.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Let us know! The CopDoc Podcast - Season 8 - Episode 153What happens when a basketball coach becomes a police chief? Chief John Fisher of the Bedford, Massachusetts, Police Department brings a refreshingly human perspective to law enforcement leadership, replacing command-and-control with connection and coaching.Fisher's journey from U.S. Coast Guard service through the ranks of Nashua, NH Police Department to his current role reveals a leadership style fundamentally shaped by his parallel career coaching high school basketball for over 30 seasons. "Coaching happens in split seconds," he explains, "but you still have to fall back on a coaching mentality. Same way we do in law enforcement."At the heart of Fisher's approach is what he calls "the coaching sandwich" – opening with value recognition, suggesting improvement, and closing with encouragement. This technique acknowledges the reality that most police interactions involve people experiencing "their worst possible moment," requiring officers skilled in human connection more than tactical proficiency. When taking command of new departments, Fisher began by listening rather than dictating, meeting individually with officers to understand their perspectives before implementing change.Fisher challenges traditional notions of police authority, recognizing that today's departments include officers spanning from their 20s to 60s, each generation requiring different leadership approaches. His philosophy emphasizes critical thinking through questions rather than commands, preparing teams for crisis through "what if" scenarios, and building community connections that transcend enforcement.Whether you're in law enforcement, leadership, or simply interested in organizational culture, Fisher's insights offer valuable lessons on mentoring the next generation, navigating institutional change, and maintaining optimism while facing challenging realities. Ready to rethink what effective leadership looks like? It is also promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium, retired Georgia law enforcement officer Bryan McRee opened up about his harrowing experience investigating assaults and sex assaults on kids, a career focus he never anticipated but ultimately became his calling. With 25 years in law enforcement, Bryan's journey took him from a city Police Department to the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office in south-central Georgia, where he served as a Detective. It was there that he found himself pulled into the darkest aspects of crime: investigations into child sexual abuse. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. “I never thought this would become a specialty for me,” Bryan said. “But once I handled my first case involving a child, I realized how critical it was that someone do this right, and do it with compassion.” Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . Throughout his career, Bryan led numerous investigations involving minors, often uncovering trauma that had been hidden within trusted circles. Assaults On Kids, Intervention and Investigations, His Experience. “The majority of these assaults come from someone the child knows, a family member, a coach, a caretaker,” he explained. “That betrayal adds another layer of trauma, and it complicates the investigation.” Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. Bryan detailed two specific cases that he believes the news media often misrepresents, stories that don't make for comfortable headlines, but are sadly common. According to Bryan, intervention needs to happen early, and the focus should always be on the victims, not sensationalism. “One of the hardest parts was facing attacks, not just from suspects, but sometimes from their families, who refused to believe the victim. That's something the public rarely sees,” he noted. “But these kids... they needed someone to believe them.” The emotional toll of these cases wasn't lost on Bryan. Assaults On Kids, Intervention and Investigations, His Experience. You can listen to his stories and interview on our website for free in addition to platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and other major podcast platforms. “You try to leave the job at the office, but when a kid looks you in the eye and says what happened to them, that stays with you. You carry that forever.” He emphasized that part of his duty wasn't just about arrests and convictions, it was about intervention, providing hope and healing to children and families whose lives had been shattered. Child sexual abuse is alarmingly prevalent. According to national statistics, every 68 seconds an American is sexually assaulted, and the vast majority of abused children, up to 93% that were sexually assaulted knew their abuser. Despite that, only 25 out of every 1,000 perpetrators are ever imprisoned. Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium and most all social media platforms. “People need to understand the scale of the problem,” Bryan stressed. “We're talking about hundreds of thousands of victims. And these kids often don't have a voice, so we have to be that voice.” Assaults On Kids, Intervention and Investigations, His Experience. In Georgia, initiatives like the Keeping Kids Safe Campaign are part of an ongoing effort to provide intervention services to victims. Organizations like the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy (GCCA) serve over 900 children each year, offering forensic interviews, trauma-informed therapy, and family support. “What GCCA does is incredible,” Bryan said. “They're rebuilding lives.” Lowndes County, where Bryan served, is located near the Florida border and is part of the Valdosta metropolitan area. Known for its strong community ties and rich history, the Sheriff's Office there operates with a mission rooted in justice, dignity, and community service. The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. “We were always taught to serve with integrity. To protect the innocent. That mission became very real when dealing with kids who had been assaulted.” Since retiring from law enforcement, Bryan has founded LEMS.Online, a company dedicated to modernizing law enforcement services. LEMS provides POST training, evidence room audits, and even duty-ready firearms and suppressors. The organization also offers a free training record management system for Georgia POST instructors, streamlining and improving how agencies track training and compliance. Assaults On Kids, Intervention and Investigations, His Experience. “It's about giving back,” he said. “My time as a cop taught me that law enforcement needs the right tools and training. LEMS is how I continue to serve, just in a different way.” His podcast episode dives deep into both the practical and emotional challenges of working cases involving the assaults on kids, and the vital role law enforcement plays in these investigations. His candid storytelling, combined with years of fieldwork, make it a must-listen for anyone interested in the reality behind the badge. You can listen to the full conversation now on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast Websitem, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and be sure to follow the ongoing discussion across Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn. Assaults On Kids, Intervention and Investigations, His Experience.
