Am I 100% sugar-free? Heck no! But I'm 95+% sugar-free, and this is sayin' a lot for someone who in her teen years used to compulsively binge on the stuff. (Turns out when you remove all dietary fat from your diet, you crave sugar.)Today's Nourishment Mindset episode #62 guest, Michael Collins of SugarAddiction.com has climbed many addiction and health journey mountains, and he's come out on top with a simple message: if you're addicted to sugar, he can help you detox. For the last 12 years, he's helped people heal and recover their vitality and mental clarity.During our conversation, we discuss how all addictions revolve around a dopamine regulation issue. Michael states that we're not really looking for something sweet: what we really want is a quick hit of dopamine to feel better given stress, anxiety, depression, etc. When our brains are wired to turn to sugar for self soothing, it's a pattern and the longer it exists, the more “hard wired” we become. From a metabolic point of view, having a treat here and there is something we can handle if we're well nourished and insulin sensitive. However, most people are both nutrient deficient and insulin resistant, which can lead to a blood sugar roller coaster and addictive tendencies including cravings and withdrawal. If you find yourself suffering consequences either metabolically or emotionally given your relationship with sugar, you have an issue. The good news is that detoxing from the stuff can help you incorporate new soothing practice and build new neural pathways. Tune in to listen to his story of addiction and recovery, and learn about his approach. And learn my “pause button” approach to preventing mindless or addictive eating. Then let me know what you think including my nutty comments on bringing back smoking! Lastly, check out Michael's Quit Sugar Summit which is happening in January 2025 — it's packed with impressive speakers! If you're not yet a subscriber, head over to FavorFat.Substack.com and join our Nourishment Mindset community for free. When he got sober, he started to use sugar instead of drugs and alcohol. Flour and sugar were just the staples of his diet. One day, Michael read a book called Sugar Blues by William Dufty. You can check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/Sugar-Blues-William-Dufty/dp/0446343129/benazadi-20 Eventually, he started putting out his own information about sugar addiction on the internet. [12:00] Why People Don't Recognize Sugar As An Addiction People are going blind and losing limbs because of sugar addiction. Some people biochemically cannot ingest sugar. 95% of all people that lose any amount of weight gain it all back and then some in the first year. The word addiction is still stigmatized. So many people are not willing to consider sugar addiction a real thing. [24:00] What Exactly Is Happening In The Brain When We Eat Sugar All of the brain reward chemicals are affected by sugar. In fact, they are manually manipulated by sugar. When you stop eating sugar, your dopamine receptors will be thinned out. If you have a sweet tooth craving, you are looking for a dopamine hit. You can give sugar to a one-year-old, and there are no ethical worries. If you have high-stress events in your day-to-day, maybe you eat sugar as a response. Then it's time to remove the stressful situation so you can ditch the sugar. [37:15] Caffeine Use Disorder Is Accepted By The Medical Community Caffeine use disorder is actually in the DSM. The medical establishment has seen what happens when people overuse caffeine. So, we still have to fight for people who have sugar use disorder. Science is catching up around sugar addiction, and hopefully, people can get the help they need from the medical community. [41:20] Tips For Making The Transition To Keto In 2022 Keto is going to be hard for about seven to ten days. Most likely, you are not going to feel well. If you have a sugar addiction, you are going to be lethargic, and you are going to be depressed. This is normal because your dopamine is finally getting a rest. However, in the long run, you will have a better mood, you'll sleep better, and you'll be able to focus more. Her own journey with overcoming food addiction, mental illness, and a lifelong eating disorder have enabled her to truly connect with others who struggle with similar issues and help them heal. At age 41, Jessyca had all but given up on life. She was taking 17 pills a day for bulimia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, chronic migraine, bladder disease, and other ailments. She spent every day completely consumed by food addiction and bingeing. She was 309 lbs, the highest weight of her life. Her high blood pressure put her at severe risk for stroke and heart attack. Jessyca decided she had to change if she wanted to live. She was tired of missing out on life. She deserved better. Her family deserved better. A drastic change in diet to a Ketogenic lifestyle was the beginning of her total transformation. She immediately discovered that her cravings and urge to binge were reduced. Within two months, her blood pressure returned to normal, and she had mental clarity for the first time ever. This real food, low carb diet allowed her to think clearly enough to work through her issues, and finally heal. Over the next year, she was able to get off the majority of her meds. She also lost 146 lbs and maintained it. Jessyca has been in recovery from eating disorders and food addiction for more than five years. She is medication-free! Her personal transformation led her to dive deep into studying nutrition and wellness, so she could help others. She has completed many courses and received several diplomas and certifications including Holistic Nutrition, LCHF Nutrition, Nutrition, and The Immune System, Life Coaching, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders, Addiction Therapy, CBT for Depression, Anxiety, and Phobias. In today's episode, I talk with Mike Collins two years and 100 episodes after our first interview! Mike believes sugar addiction is very real and not to be taken lightly. As a person in long-term recovery from substance use disorder for over thirty-six years, he took a very keen interest in what sugar was doing to him and his friends in early recovery. After much research and experimentation - he quit sugar with the help of amazing mentors. He then raised two children sugar-free from the womb to six years old and as they grew he rewrote the rules for sugar and kids in childhood. He takes very seriously his stewardship of SugarAddiction.com and the QuitSugarSummit.com and aims to provide information and community for anyone wanting to curb or quit sugar. His book “The Last Resort Sugar Detox” has been read by hundreds of thousands of people and his online 30-Day Challenge Sugar Freedom Challenge has been successfully completed by thousands. Danielle realized she had sugar addiction through an awakening she had several years ago when she went through a detox in the middle of the Columbian jungle. As she withdrew from sugar, she experienced a period of feeling very ill. She continued on without sugar and after a few weeks realized she no longer had cravings like she did before and sugar no longer had the same hold over her. Her path to breaking sugar addiction had begun. Through this experience, she became passionate about nourishing her body properly as a means to avoid the chronic diseases so prevalent in her family. She spent the next two years figuring out her version of a sugar-free, whole foods diet. She now works as a nutrition coach to help others break their sugar addiction and find greater health. Her personal motivation never included weight loss but rather finding health and preventing future disease through a better diet. One of the great tools she discusses is asking yourself "why" at least three more times when you find your surface-level reason for wanting to lose weight or change your diet. This process allows people to get closer to the root of their food addiction. Breaking sugar addiction may require asking these why questions repeatedly over time. You'll have to listen to the show to hear more about this process, but it's a simple and effective too to start identifying bad habits in relation to sugar and food so that you can create new, healthier habits.
