Sheila Dillon hears why some clinicians and researchers want the condition 'Ultra-Processed Food Addiction' to be recognised by groups such as The World Health Organisation. Earlier this year, Dr Jen Unwin (clinical psychologist) and some like-minded international colleagues, including Dr Chris Van Tulleken (scientist, author and broadcaster), came together in London to discuss why they believe Ultra-Processed Foods (UPF), as defined by the NOVA Food Classification system, are the most problematic, and are causing more addicted like behaviours in people. They say if the addiction was formalised, then Government's would have to do more to regulate these foods and the food industry. People who consider themselves food addicts, explain to Sheila what the addiction is like to live with, how they stay abstinent from certain foods, and why they believe it would help others if the diagnosis was available to more people. Sheila also speaks to a specialist in Eating Disorders who says they don't believe the scientific evidence for Food Addiction is strong enough, and has concerns that labelling certain foods as 'bad' or 'toxic' could lead to more disordered eating. Presented by Sheila Dillon Produced by Natalie Donovan in Bristol.Additional Resources: https://the-chc.org/fas https://liberatetoday.org/ https://liberatetoday.org/

Episode 2402- On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich speaks with Dr. Jen Unwin about food addiction, CGMs and how once you know, you can't unknow, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2023/10/you-cant-unknow-with-dr-jen-unwin-episode-2402 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - You Can't Unknow Vinnie and Dr. Unwin jump into a discussion about food, addictions, and how certain behaviors can lead to disease. (2:30) Vinnie, however, has a problem blaming folks for getting addicted to foods, because food is necessary for survival, unlike, drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes. Optimally, we should continuously stay away from foods that harm us. (9:00) Dr. Unwin appreciates some of her earlier struggles because now she is more aware of what it takes to keep a healthy body and brain. (10:00) They discuss “bonk” and how Vinnie learned about fueling with ketones. She discusses brain health, ketones, and what happens in the brain with sugars. (15:00) What seems to have been functional in early human evolution has gone awry because of our modern diets. (22:30) They discuss food-like items that mess with body chemistry and how they affect hunger signals. (29:00) The body really doesn't require more than 1-2 teaspoons of sugar to function, and your body can make that on its own from your liver. (34:00) They talk about CGMs and what a beneficial tool it is. (38:00) Once you see what certain foods do to your body you can't unknow! Faulty Research and Faux Information Vinnie shares the recently published article claiming that meat causes diabetes. (40:00) They discuss how it's a flawed study that doesn't even make sense physiologically. Diabetes is caused by carbs, and meat has no carbs. Low-fat and vegan diets are misleading when it comes to health. (50:00) Dr. Unwin is advocating for food addiction to be recognized as a medical problem. (53:00) She hopes for health regulations based on the labeling and advertising of processed foods. Next year she will be part of a food addiction conference where notable doctors and experts will be speaking. You can follow her on X/Twitter @jen_unwin or Dr Jen Unwin-Fork in the Road to receive updates on the conference. Vinnie mentions the challenge of the correct health information getting out there because of funding from high-finance sources. (55:00) He's excited about important conferences like Dr. Unwin mentions because they fight misinformation. Mary-Frances O'Connor, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Arizona where she conducts studies to better understand the grief process both psychologically and physiologically. She is a leader in the field of prolonged grief, a clinical condition in which people do not adjust to the acute feelings of grief and show increases in yearning, avoidance, and rumination. Her work primarily focuses on trying to tease out the mechanisms that cause this ongoing and severe reaction to loss. In particular, she is curious about the neurobiological, immune, and cardiovascular factors that vary between individual responses to grief. Dr. O'Connor's book: The Grieving Brain: The Surprising Science of How We Learn from Love and Loss gives us a fascinating new window into one of the hallmark experiences of being human. O'Connor has devoted decades to researching the effects of grief on the brain, and in this book, she makes cutting-edge neuroscience accessible through her contagious enthusiasm and guides us through how we encode love and grief. With love, our neurons help us form attachments to others; but, with loss, our brain must come to terms with where our loved ones went, or how to imagine a future that encompasses their absence. Based on O'Connor's own trailblazing neuroimaging work, research in the field, and her real-life stories, The Grieving Brain does what the best popular science books do, combining storytelling, accessible science, and practical knowledge that will help us better understand what happens when we grieve and how to navigate loss with more ease and grace. In today's episode: How Mary-Frances got into the field of bereavement science Why it is so hard and takes so long to understand that when someone dies it is forever Why grief causes so many emotions What happens to the brain during grief How our understanding of grief has changed over time Why do some people adapt better than others when someone passes away What can we do when we are overwhelmed with grief? Can our grief change? Signature Question: If you could tell a younger version of yourself something about grief/grieving/bereavement – what would it be? Katie Caldesi Katie and her Italian husband Giancarlo first came to public attention when they featured in the BBC2 series Return to Tuscany in 2006. The series, which was broadcast worldwide, followed the pair as they set up and launched a residential cookery school in Tuscany. The show climaxed with them getting married in a dreamlike Tuscan wedding. Since then they have both been frequent visitors to our screens appearing as guests on an array of foodie programmes such as BBC1's Masterchef, Saturday Kitchen and Sunday Brunch. As business partners, they own the Caldesi Group of Restaurants and Cookery Schools with restaurants in London's Marylebone and culinary mecca Bray in Berkshire. Their cookery school ‘La Cucina Caldesi' was launched in Marylebone in 2005 and this year they celebrated 15 years of business at Caldesi in Campagna, their restaurant in Bray and 20 years in Caldesi in Marylebone. Katie started researching the low-carb diet when her husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and gluten-intolerance through nutritionist Jenny Phillips. She then became aware of the work of Dr David Unwin (the low-carb GP). Following advice from both Jenny and David, she began to develop low-carb dishes and soon the whole family had cut right back on the carbs. There were immediate benefits to this as the whole family had more energy, they all lost weight, Giorgio's headaches lessened and Flavio's skin improved. Giancarlo lost almost 4 stone in weight which led to his diabetes going into remission. Inspired by this Katie wrote her first of five low-carb cookbooks ‘The Diabetes Weight-Loss Cookbook' which included some of the recipes she had developed for the family, a section on why low-carb works with Jenny Phillips and a foreword by Dr David and Dr Jen Unwin. The book was serialised in the Daily Mail and became an Amazon bestseller which led to Katie writing another four low-carb cookbooks. Her latest cookbook ‘The Low-carb Italian' launches in March 2023. Her e-book ‘The Caldesi Low-carb Christmas' is available as an e-book or paperback and includes festive low-carb, gluten-free recipes that are a treat for all the family and ideal for entertaining too. Katie has also written 12 other cookbooks covering the food of Italy, the art of preserving food as well as a compendium of salad recipes from around the world. In 2019, Treflyn decided to turn his back on the way that he had been eating and living. He had always had a tendency to put on weight. And like most people, he had managed to lose weight but also to put it on again. Since he has been on a one-meal-a-day regime, he can say that it has changed his outlook on getting healthy by understanding what makes him gain weight. Along his weight loss journey, he met Dr. Joanne McCormack who is an advocate of the Low Carbohydrate Diet, as a result of this he started running multiple weekly support group meetings for her. He was invited to speak with a group of Doctors and spoke alongside Dr. Joanne McCormack and Drs. David and Jen Unwin, who are pioneers in the low carbohydrate community. With all public meetings having to close in May 2020, he set up a Facebook group called KEEP FAT CLUB which he renamed to LOCALOFA (LOw CArbohydrate LOw FAt) which currently has 2000+ international members and he has a YouTube channel called WARRINGTON LOW CARBOHYDRATE GROUP which currently has just under 9,000 subscribers. Dr Jen Unwin and Heidi Giaever Dr Jen Unwin Dr Jen Unwin is a chartered clinical and health psychologist. She worked for over 30 years in the NHS and now spends her time researching, campaigning and writing about sugar addiction. She is a founding member of the Public Health Collaboration, a UK charity campaigning for better public health advice. Her and her husband Dr David Unwin, a GP have been helping the patients in his practice adopt low carb diets to reverse their diabetes. This work has resulted in several published papers and numerous conference and media appearances. She has recently published a book called 'Fork in the Road' which is a guide for people with sugar/carb addiction. All profits are for the PHC. Heidi Giaever Heidi comes from Norway and spent part of my childhood in East Africa. With her original degree (Salford University, UK) in Chemical Engineering she spent most of her career in international business development. She retrained in Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine following a personal health scare in her early 40s. She underwent extensive tests for early onset dementia, following a prolonged period of increasing memory and concentration problems with a direct impact on her work capacity and performance resulting in plummeting self-confidence. Years later, she met Dr Jen Unwin and Food Addiction Specialist Bitten Jonsson. She and Jen trained with Bitten. She then understood that her problem was food addiction. It wasn't from poor nutrition as a child, but from an unchecked desire and exposure to sugar. She learnt to bake as a child, learnt to love the whipped sugar and butter bases for cakes and biscuits. This exposed her brain and body to ever increasing amounts of sugar without visible effects on her weight. Now she is a food addict in remission, focusing on “Life With and Beyond the Food”. She and her husband moved to the UK almost 9 years ago and she started voluntary work in the most deprived areas of Crawley, West Sussex. She worked with nutrition in community centres and preschools focusing on building awareness of the dangers of hidden sugars and the value of feeding children real foods. Since then, most of her work has been with mature adults, running diabetes reversal programmes for GP surgeries in Sussex and with private clients wanting help with weight, metabolic challenges and Food Addiction. Heidi now works closely with Jen on initiatives to bring formal recognition of this disorder and to contribute to the lack of clinical evidence of recovery and support programmes that can help sufferers. One such initiative is their Food Addiction Recovery Clinical Study, FARCS, where, together with Dr Jen Unwin and other colleagues in Sweden and North America, they offer group-consultation based programmes and they hope to achieve statistical significance so that that they can contribute valuable data to the current lack of clinical evidence in this field. Another main focus for her nutrition and lifestyle work has resulted in the Collaboration for Kids (CFK) project, which she leads under the umbrella of the Public Health Collaboration. Dr Jen's Top Tips If you are a food addict the treatment is abstinence. You have work out which are your drug foods and exclude them. Not just what you eat but how you eat, what are the addictive behaviours? Eat foods that nourish your body and brain without being restrictive. Heidi's Top Tips Analyse - take the time to look and analyse what is going on with you. Beyond the food - you need to fill your life with living not just food. Act - get active in this field. Episode 2031 - On this Friday show, Vinnie Tortorich and Dr. Jen Unwin talk her work as a clinical psychologist, finding a low carb diet, taking control of carbohydrate addiction, her book Fork in the Road: A Helpful Guide to Food Freedom, controlling hormones, and more. Https://www.vinnietortorich.com/2022/02/carbohydrate-addiction-food-freedom-dr-jen-unwin-episode-2031 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Dr. Unwin's husband, Dr. David Unwin, has been on the show before. He's also a doctor. She is a clinical psychologist who focuses on the relationship between food and our brains. Now, she helps her patients change their life by controlling their relationships to carbohydrates. Her fabulous book is available here: CARBOHYDRATE ADDICTION Dr. Unwin has always felt a crazy draw to food. She eventually began to see her food through an addiction lens. When Jen found low carb, she got the science, and on day 8 she started to feel much better. Only then did she understand -- one bite is too many and one thousand is never enough. She knew she had to abstain completely and treat it like any other addiction. So for her, there is no life into living. You should evaluate your relationship to carbs before you decide whether you want to put LIL or not. For some people, this isn't a problem, but for others, it absolutely changes your quality of life when you take control of the addiction. As addicts, we might know carbs are bad for us, but we feel like we can't help it. This is why going all in from the beginning can be very important. Food manufacturers know people have these addictions, and they play into it. If you're eating 'keto' things, it might still be feeding the addiction. For Dr. Jen Unwin, peanut butter was something for her that continued to feed the addiction. She had to cut it out completely. Dr. Jen Unwin is a clinical psychologist and a self-confessed lifelong carbohydrate addict. She's the author of Fork in the Road.In this episode, she tells her own personal story about her addiction to sugar and all processed carbs. From her early childhood, through her teens and into adulthood, Jen had a love-hate relationship with food, especially sugar. Her mother was always on a diet and Jen herself started dieting at about age 16. She tried all the fad diets - all of them! That set off an up-and-down cycle with her weight. She followed the popular advice to eat "everything in moderation", not realizing that she has the sort of brain that can't moderate certain foods (ie: refined carbs like sugar and flour). This went on until her early 40s, when she stumbled across a book called "Escape The Diet Trap", which was basically about low carb eating.Jen tells how her whole world changed after that, and how she now helps people who suffer with food addiction. As a medical professional, she understands food and sugar addiction because she's been there. After working for over 30 years in the NHS, Jen now spends her time researching, campaigning and writing about sugar addiction. Dr Jen Unwin Dr Jen Unwin is a chartered clinical and health psychologist. Dr Jen Unwin is a Clinical Psychologist and lifelong carbohydrate addict. She noticed that if she came off plan it was hard to get back to it. She knew about addiction in her work as a psychologist but hadn't linked it to food. Once Dr Jen became aware that sugars and carbohydrates can truly be addictive, she looked into more. Dr Jen trained with Bitten Jonsson a holistic addiction specialist. They recognised that the same problems a person has with alcohol or drugs can also happen with sugars and carbs.Dr Jen explains that some sugar and carb addicts have to be careful with sweeteners, nuts, dairy and alcohol as they too can influence the brain pathways.Dr Jen's BooksFork In the Road - Dr Jen Unwinhttps://amzn.to/33TytYgDr Jen's Top TipsIf you can't moderate - try withoutIf you can recognise an addiction - then abstain rather than moderateIt's not all about the foodResources MentionedEscape The Diet Trap - Dr John Briffahttps://amzn.to/3fjnqguBitten Jonssonhttps://fabulouslyketo.com/podcast/011Quotes by Dr Jen Unwin“So I'm a bit of an all or nothing person. So I did the whole cold turkey thing, straight onto low carb. Had about eight days of feeling pretty grim. But then the lights came on, the colour came on. And I felt amazing.”“It's essentially the sugars that are the most addictive thing.”“What's addiction? It's about this kind of compulsion and a difficulty resisting carrying out those behaviours even when you don't want to. You know, you're doing something that you know is harming your mental and physical health but still you do it.”“Find your tribe. Most of us haven't got people in our family, necessarily, who understand this struggle.”“Hope is possible. Change is possible.”“Sugar is robbing people of their joy and their best selves.”“Habits were incredibly powerful. Yet with willpower, we're never going to rely on it really in this regard. Because it gets hijacked by that primitive part of your brain, the survival part of your brain which is driving you to do these things as it thinks it is helping you.”"If you're a true addict, you can't have a little bit of cake. It'll never be one bite. It'll always be a whole cake. And then i

In today's episode I talk with Dr. Jen Unwin from the UK about sugar addiction. Dr. Jennifer Unwin is a Consultant and Clinical Health Psychologist with over 30 years of NHS experience. Dr. Unwin specializes in helping people with chronic illnesses to improve their lives through solution-focused brief therapy (a psychological approach based on solution-building rather than problem-solving). She is former Chair of the UK Association for Solution-Focused Practice. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Unwin contributed to 19 clinical papers and two published books. She is also a renowned public speaker, having spoken at conferences and events worldwide. She recently retired from her NHS role in May 2019 and now dedicates her time to working alongside her husband, Dr. David Unwin, to provide innovative and results-driven patient care to those with type 2 diabetes and sugar addiction through Diabetes Digital Media (DDM). DDM is an award-winning digital health platform offering scalable and evidence-based health solutions to those with diabetes. Together, the Unwins have pioneered the use of low carbohydrate diets in the treatment of obesity and diabetes through a patient-centric model of ‘hope'. Dr. Unwin believes that “every piece of bad news, for example a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, can be turned on its head to become a golden opportunity for change.” Since the success of the low carb initiative is largely reliant on hope, the most important part is to address the patient's personal goals. Dr. Unwin draws on her extensive psychological knowledge to promote a two-way discussion which is informative, motivating and fulfilling for both doctor and patient. Through hard work, perseverance and most of all, taking the time to understand each patient's individual needs and goals, David and Jen Unwin have proven that low carb lifestyles work, that they last, and that they can be made accessible to all. Sam Feltham has been in the health and fitness industry for over a decade. Starting out as a party coordinator at a sports centre and working his way up to studying at the European Institute of Fitness and qualifying as a Master Personal Trainer. After 5 years of running a fitness boot camp business Sam decided to move away from that business in order to fully focus on improving public health by setting up and directing the Public Health Collaboration. Sam started as a personal trainer and then set fitness bootcamps called Smash The Fat. Sam used to have his own podcast for Smash The Fat. After reading Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes he started to recommend low carb, real food diets. In 2015 he felt he was in a philosophical quandary. He felt to continue the business would be an uphill battle against mainstream dietary advice, which Sam felt was bad advice. He felt the only way to tackle the issue was to get to the root cause. He decided not to continue with Smash The Fat and to set up a not for profit charity aimed at lobbying the government that the food guide lines need to be changed and suggesting that they might have got the guidelines wrong in the 80s.Sam proposed this to Dr Aseem Malhotra, Dr Trudi Deakin, Dr David Unwin, Dr Jen Unwin who thought it was a great idea and so the Public Health Collaboration (PHC) was started.Ambassadors ProgrammeThe Ambassadors are local representatives of the PHC, who liaise with healthcare professionals in NHS GP practices. They help set up free support groups and show the results the programme is achieving with patients improving metabolic health and saving money for the NHS.Andy Bishop is a PHC Ambassador who joined a patient participation group, then got the PHC on the agenda for a meeting. Eventually he was able to set up a group. It took 18 months to get the first group up and running but now has 4-5 groups in north Liverpool. Ambassadors are beginning to make breakthroughs by going through the patient participant groups.Sam's Top TipsUnderstand and creating your ‘Why' by creating a statement of your personal purpose of why you want to become healthier Have the resources on hand which includes a variety in foods, recipe book or websites, and consider planning the first week of your transition Have an accountability person to help you with changing your lifestyle Resources MentionedSam's old training Smash the Fat http://live.smashthefat.com/Sam's high fat experiment http://live.smashthefat.com/why-i-didnt-get-fat/ Smash the Fat YT https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCFMZHxKvSFn-wLjaV2hf1g?feature=emb_ch_name_ex Smash the Fat Podcast https://podtail.com/en/podcast/smash-the-fat/ PHCUK Resourceshttps://phcuk.org/resources/Dr David Unwin's Sugar Infographics https://phcuk.org/sugar/PHCUK Ambassadors Program https://phcuk.org/ambassadors/
