Esther Helga Gudmundsdottir is a pioneer in the field of food addiction treatment and recovery. Motivated to continue to get the message out that food addicts cannot control their eating and body weight through diets and exercise alone, she began the Food Addiction podcast. Esther was personally battling food addiction for most of her adult life, carrying 130 lbs. of too much weight. She discovered the solution to her problem in recovery and a twelve-step program which changed her life and led to her life's mission.    She is founder and director of one of the first food addiction treatment programs in the world, the MFM Food Addiction Treatment Center in Iceland. MFM has treated more than 3000 people for the disease of food addiction.  In 2017 Esther founded the INFACT School infactschool.com/, the first school in the world to train and certify food addiction professionals and counselors to treat those suffering from the disease. Those completing the training are qualified for certification by the European Certification Board as well from the US National Addiction Professional Certification Board. If you want to know more about INFACT, visit our site at infactschool.com for registration details and certification information. Esther is the chair and executive director of the board of the Food Addiction Institute. Food Addiction Institute (FAI) was founded in 2005, as an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to support the healing of all food addicts. https://foodaddictioninstitute.com In this podcast we address the shame and denial as food addicts try and fail at diets repeatedly since they cannot control food intake in the same ways normal eaters can. Also discussed are the misconceptions by the medical community around food addiction, and rather than treating it as a brain disease or addiction, the health problems associated with the symptoms of food addictions such as obesity are being treated. The science is clear: Food addicts are chemically addicted to foods such as sugar, flour and other trigger/binge foods and once ingested it initiates an addictive response causing them to want more. Abstinent food plans and recovery programs are the solutions for food addicts.   Though food addiction is a substance use disorder, the American Psychiatric Association has not yet acknowledged it as such through the DSM-5. There are movements afoot to assure food addiction is approved in the DSM-5 so that treatment can be broadly offered and covered by insurance companies. The food and pharmaceutical industries have strong financial interests in preventing this from happening.  Subscribe to the Food Addiction podcast on your favorite podcast platform. Watch for more incredible episodes coming soon!

In today's season 5 premiere, I talk with Esther Helga Gudmundsdottir. She tells us about her own journey with food addiction, how she helped herself and then how she opened one of the first food addiction treatment programs in the world. And after doing those things, also founded INFACT, to help professionals get the training needed to help their food addict patients. Esther has almost 20 years of abstinence under her belt and is changing the world so that everyone can find and get treatment. Esther Helga Gudmundsdottir is a pioneer in the field of food addiction treatment. Once an opera singer and opera teacher, Esther was battling food addiction for most of her adult life until she discovered a twelve step program that changed her life. Once in recovery, she opened one of the first food addiction treatment programs in the world. The MFM program in Iceland has treated many people, some of them had tried multiple diets and even surgery in an attempt to live a healthier life. Esther's program gives them hope and the tools to achieve long term recovery. Based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous their success rate long term is much higher than any other medical intervention. After establishing the treatment center, Esther realized that not only the patients needed help with food addiction but also the professionals. She then founded INFACT, an international training program for any type of professional willing to learn about food addiction and how to help those suffering with it. The six months online course is open to everyone and it gives you an excellent evidence based knowledge on Food Addiction diagnosis and treatment. The list of lecturers is very impressive, from Nicole Avena to Robert Lustig (author of Metabolical) to experienced counsellors on the field of food addiction like Phil Werdell. At the end of the course, attendees receive a Food Addiction Professional Certificate from the European Certification Board. On top of this impressive curriculum, Esther is the Executive Director and Chair of the Food Addiction Institute, an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to support the healing of all food addicts, founded in 2005. To accomplish our mission FAI works towards the following: Advocating widespread acceptance of food addiction as a disease of substance abuse and the availability of effective, abstinence-based solutions. Helping to identify and expand knowledge about food addiction. Providing professional and public education about food addiction as a treatable chemical dependency to physicians, dietitians, therapists, counselors, and allied health professionals, internationally. Offering information about promising new practices for the treatment of food addiction. Supplying resources for those who may be food addicted. Creating a forum for the development and dissemination of innovative and effective public health strategies related to the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of food addiction. Michael and his wife raised two children sugar-free from the womb to six years of age. For over 30 years, Michael has worked closely with others to help them regain lives ravaged by various substance use disorders. In this episode, Michael talks about all the reasons why he decided to go entirely sugar-free for over thirty years. He explains why many people are reluctant to call sugar a real addiction. Then, Michael reveals what exactly is going on in the brain when we eat sugar and what happens when we stop eating sugar. Tune in as Michael gives tips for starting a keto lifestyle in the new year, and we chat all about the upcoming Quit Sugar Summit. When he got sober, he started to use sugar instead of drugs and alcohol. Flour and sugar were just the staples of his diet. One day, Michael read a book called Sugar Blues by William Dufty. You can check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/Sugar-Blues-William-Dufty/dp/0446343129/benazadi-20 Eventually, he started putting out his own information about sugar addiction on the internet. [12:00] Why People Don't Recognize Sugar As An Addiction People are going blind and losing limbs because of sugar addiction. Some people biochemically cannot ingest sugar. 95% of all people that lose any amount of weight gain it all back and then some in the first year. The word addiction is still stigmatized. So many people are not willing to consider sugar addiction a real thing. [24:00] What Exactly Is Happening In The Brain When We Eat Sugar All of the brain reward chemicals are affected by sugar. In fact, they are manually manipulated by sugar. When you stop eating sugar, your dopamine receptors will be thinned out. If you have a sweet tooth craving, you are looking for a dopamine hit. You can give sugar to a one-year-old, and there are no ethical worries. If you have high-stress events in your day-to-day, maybe you eat sugar as a response. Then it's time to remove the stressful situation so you can ditch the sugar. [37:15] Caffeine Use Disorder Is Accepted By The Medical Community Caffeine use disorder is actually in the DSM. The medical establishment has seen what happens when people overuse caffeine. So, we still have to fight for people who have sugar use disorder. Science is catching up around sugar addiction, and hopefully, people can get the help they need from the medical community. [41:20] Tips For Making The Transition To Keto In 2022 Keto is going to be hard for about seven to ten days. Most likely, you are not going to feel well. If you have a sugar addiction, you are going to be lethargic, and you are going to be depressed. This is normal because your dopamine is finally getting a rest. However, in the long run, you will have a better mood, you'll sleep better, and you'll be able to focus more. [50:15] All About The Quit Sugar Summit 2022 The 8th Annual Quit Sugar Summit is coming up in 2022. It goes through January 24 – 30, 2022. You'll hear from some amazing speakers like Dr. David Perlmutter, Dr. Richard Johnson, Dr. Nicole Avena, Bitten Jonsson, Cristy “Code Red” Nickel, Ben Azadi, and much more! The diet industry is a $70 billion industry, and no one believes it. At the summit, people are selling nothing. Instead, they are just bringing information to people that need it. She has been on the Board of Directors for the Food Addiction Institute located in Florida since 2010. Bitten has decades of experience treating patients with food addiction and has developed a holistic treatment program for food addicts in which she offers education for professionals, both in Sweden and online. She has also developed a self-diagnosis test, which helps clients learn if they're suffering from harmful use or addiction. It is important to know the difference since the treatment for each condition differs. Bitten follows guidelines in addiction medicine from the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and is trained in Addiction Interaction Disorder, oftentimes described as “one illness, many outlets.” Most of Bitten's training was completed alongside Terence T. Gorski at CENAPS in the US. She was also a member of National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP) and The Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC) for many years. Additionally, she has been certified and licensed in Alcohol and Drug Diagnose Instrument (ADDIS) since 1990, which is built on ICD 10 and DSM5 diagnostic criteria for addiction, as well as, SUGAR certified and licensed. SUGAR is an evaluation instrument she developed after the ADDIS model. Bitten is a food addict in recovery since 1993, which is when she got help in the US after struggling with her own food addiction for many years. She is convinced that a keto food plan is the best option for those who suffer from food addiction — and more specifically, for those who are addicted to sugar. She has been on the Board of Directors for the Food Addiction Institute located in Florida since 2010. Bitten has decades of experience treating patients with food addiction and has developed a holistic treatment program for food addicts in which she offers education for professionals, both in Sweden and online. She has also developed a self-diagnosis test, which helps clients learn if they’re suffering from harmful use or addiction. It is important to know the difference since the treatment for each condition differs. Bitten follows guidelines in addiction medicine from the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and is trained in Addiction Interaction Disorder, oftentimes described as “one illness, many outlets.” Most of Bitten’s training was completed alongside Terence T. She is convinced that a keto food plan is the best option for those who suffer from food addiction — and more specifically, for those who are addicted to sugar Connect with Bitten Jonsson here - https://www.bittensaddiction.com https://www.dietdoctor.com/authors/bitten-jonsson-rn

Michal Collins is a former sugar addict and takes this addiction very seriously. For the past 30 years he has not consumed sugar in any form – at least not intentionally. Interestingly his interest in sugar addiction began in the early days of his 12 step recovery from drugs and alcohol abuse. As he weaned himself off of these substances he noticed that his relationship to and his consumption of sugar was beginning to resemble his other addictions. Curious and concerned, he started to talk about this with his recovery buddies. This lead him to decide to quit sugar with the help of some amazing mentors. This was over 3 decades ago. After many years of a successful business career, online selling software and information Michael decided that what really made him happy was helping people with their addictions. He has written a book on sugar addiction and developed an intensive 3-hour video-based course of the same name - “Quit Sugar Now”.He is also the Chairman of the board of The Food Addiction Institute. A certified US 501c Non-Profit founded in 2005. https://foodaddictioninstitute.org/about/board-of-directors/A firm believer in community support, he has included membership in his private recovery forum with the course. Mike shares why eliminating sugar and caffeine was a part of his journey and we discover how much both of these substances have in common with drugs and alcohol. Spoiler alert; our relationships to sugar, caffeine, and even food can and indeed may mirror our relationships to drugs and alcohol in active addiction. I implore you to bring honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness along with you as you take this episode in, and truly allow yourself to discover and uncover your own relationship with these substances. I can attest that I cannot deny that I still am guilty of slamming my dopamine receptors with caffeine all morning and sugar in the afternoon – and there's a likely a reckoning coming my way sooner rather than later. We all know sugar is bad for us. We tell ourselves that we'll just have a little bit, but it rarely works out that way.  So why can't we stop when we start?   Today, our guest Michael Collins will explain why it's so hard to kick sugar addiction and how you can actually succeed next time, with just a few simple re-frames of your current ideas around sugar.   Michael has been completely sugar-free for over 30 years and has worked closely with others to help them regain lives ravaged by various substance use disorders.  He raised two children sugar-free from the womb to over six years old (a remarkable feat), when they only had sugar one a month for their entire childhood.   He is Chairman of the Board of The Food Addiction Institute, an IRS certified 501c nonprofit that helps raise awareness about processed food and sugar worldwide, and the founder of SugarAddiction.com, which has been helping thousands successfully quit sugar for over nine years. He's also the author of the bestselling Amazon Kindle book The Last Resort Sugar Detox Guide.   Why is sugar so normalized?   Cultural and societal norms are stopping people from believing the harmful effects this drug can have – and parents are the biggest culprits behind sugar addiction in our society. Loads of cakes, ice cream, and soda are dropped off at just about every social event, making it nearly impossible to avoid.    And once you're conditioned to crave it, it's a hard addiction to kick.   Quitting Sugar & The Sugar Detox   People sometimes call marijuana a gateway drug, but sugar is the real gateway drug. Sugar is more addictive than cocaine and is the leading contributor to our nation's health crisis today.   And as people grow up, they reach for sugar to help them calm down and relieve stress. However, this connection is rarely made by people who are looking to detox and diet. Detoxing from sugar will result in physical and mental withdrawals, so joining some sort of group is essential for a smooth recovery.   If you are trying to quit sugar and are looking for support, head over to sugaraddiction.com.   --   Resources: Learn more at http://sugaraddiction.com/ (sugaraddiction.com) | foodaddictioninstitute.org Read: The Last Resort Sugar Detox Guide LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/michael-mike-collins-57a5628a Facebook: facebook.com/QuitSugarNow   Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living? Sista helgen i juni hölls stora LCHF-eventet i Säffle igen. THE WHOLE HEALTH DIET: A Transformational Approach to Weight Loss with Dr. Mark Mincolla Americans are avid dieters, with nearly one third of our entire nation taking up dieting every year. Yet, according to The Food Addiction Institute, diets have a success rate of between ten and thirty percent. Dr. Mark Mincolla, natural health care practitioner and author of THE WHOLE HEALTH DIET: A Transformational Approach to Weight Loss, claims that this high failure rate is due to a flawed approach to dieting that focuses only on physical changes. What dieters need, Dr. Mincolla argues, is a more holistic approach that addresses the root causes of weight gain: our emotional, mental, and spiritual needs. In THE WHOLE HEALTH DIET, Mincolla not only teaches readers how to tackle emotional eating; he shows them how to develop and maintain their own personalized, energy-calibrated nutrition plan. Based on the notion that each individual's metabolism reacts differently to various foods, Mincolla shows dieters how to electromagnetically test themselves for metabolic food intolerances. Mark Mincolla, Ph.D. is a legendary natural health care practitioner who has transformed the lives of many thousands of people over the past 30 years. Mark has integrated ancient Chinese energy techniques with cutting edge nutritional science in what has become his innovative Electromagnetic Muscle Testing system (EMT).  The main focus of his integrated east-west approach is what he calls Acutrition, as it zeros in on each individual's unique nutritional needs. For most people who get into recovery, at some point, food and sugar become an issue in their life. It serves as a secondary feel-good mechanism when they're not feeling great. But why is sugar so appealing? Why do some people struggle so much with it that it causes problems in their life? On today's episode of The Addicted Mind Podcast, Duane speaks with Mike Collins about the science behind sugar addiction and how it negatively impacts people in recovery. When Mike got sober, he went right back to sugar in massive amounts and a lot of people in recovery do that. Completely sugar-free for over 30 years now, Mike is the Chairman of the Board of a Food Addiction Institute that helps raise awareness about processed food and sugar worldwide. He is the founder of SugarAddiction.com which has been helping thousands successfully quit sugar for over nine years.Mike talks about the concept of an emotional management system where we are literally managing our emotions with a ubiquitous, almost free product that's available anywhere. Some people may stop for 30 days. But they revert back to their emotional management system, which has been co-opted by sugar. There are two major things here. First is how the food industry has weaponized this knowledge of the neurological workings of our brain – sugar being the gateway drug. It has that long shelf life so it's cheap to manufacture. And once they get you kind of addicted to it, they keep selling it to you. It's not just food, it's a mood changer.Mike shares his own story of how sugar impacted his own life when he started recovery, the impact of sugar addiction, and how to work through that process and get away from sugar addiction. In this episode, you will hear:Why sugar is the original gateway drugThe science behind sugar addictionWhy people are struggling with sugar addictionSugar as a cultural normUnderstanding the emotional management systemThe epidemic of overweight children and the real problem that's causing itKey Quotes:[02:59] - “A group of people who are in recovery from drugs and alcohol have struggled with sugar.”[05:46] - “The nucleus accumbens, the dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, GABA, adrenal glands, oxytocin, even your endorphins – all these things are affected by sugar.”[07:32] - “We are literally managing our emotions with a ubiquitous, almost free product that's available anywhere.”[08:53] - “We have to separate hyper palatable foods and sugar from real food."[11:32] - “When you stop eating these refined carbohydrates and processed foods, even the gut biome has to start to shift and change and adapt to not having this product in the body.”[18:17] - “When you're consuming a large amount of sugar, your body is putting this hormone out that drives your behavior. Until you shift that, it becomes really hard to even stop the process.”[20:55] - “People fall back to the old emotional management system when something difficult comes up.”[35:13] - “We have an epidemic of overweight children, and they're not out shopping for food.”[36:19] - "The concept of calories needs to be destroyed. It's a ridiculous construct." Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast? In this episode, Mike Collins talks to us about sugar addiction. Mike is the chairman of the Food Addiction Institute, a non-profit which has been around since 2005. Their stated goal is to get chronic sugar use elevated to a substance use disorder. Mike found recovery from his drug and alcohol addiction a little more than 34 years ago when he was 28. Over the years, he got married and had a normal career and business life. Yet, as he progressed with his sobriety, he started to recognize that his patterns with sugar were almost identical to his using patterns with drugs and alcohol. If he didn't have it he suffered withdrawals and became anxious, and irritable. Join The Addicted Mind Podcast Facebook Group>>> ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheAddictedMindPodcast/ ) In his intensive studies of addiction over the last five years, Mike has noticed that the sugar cravings in recovery seemed to revolve around the brain's reward system. He saw that many people, in their first year of recovery, would gain huge amounts of weight and he realized that they were getting an alternative dopamine rush from sugar. Sugar is an easy way to make ourselves feel better, so it often becomes a substitute for other addictive substances. And although sugar is a powerful psychoactive, it gets no respect as an addictive drug because it is a habit that we've had since we were children. It's freely available, so instead of dealing with the pain and discomfort of the withdrawals, most of us simply reach for more sugar. With its continued use, life becomes only about fighting off withdrawals, so all of us need to connect the dots and realize how sugar affects the brain. *Episode Link* theaddictedmind.com/73 ( http://theaddictedmind.com/73 ) Mike has been off sugar, flour, and caffeine for the last thirty years. It was a drawn-out and lonely struggle for him in the beginning, and it took a while to get off them, but once he managed to do it, he stuck to it. Mike has never seen anyone go for 90 days without sugar and then go back to it.
