It is an annual promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to help bring new readers into independent comic book stores.Mr. Ely shares about his love of comic books and describes the history of this artistic medium. His message to children interested in comics is to promote fun instead of fear, and give them a healthy outlet, especially if they are going through a rough-season in life. He shares about his efforts as is a devote Christian, husband, and father of 2 small children, a girl and a boy to teach them life values through this literary genre. One comic book that revolutionized the art form was "Spirit" by Will Eisner who won a Pulitzer prize for his graphic novel named "A Contract with God. He preferred the term sequential art. Mr. Ely recommends independent comic books and graphic novels such as:The Tale of a Bad Rat https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DUKCHZI/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1Mouse Guardhttps://www.amazon.com/Mouse-Guard-Vol-Fall-1152-ebook/dp/B011QY3K78/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Mouse+Guard&qid=1556911708&s=digital-text&sr=1-1Elf Quest https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Elfquest-Original-Quest-Elf-
Chris and Hector talk about their pulls for the last two weeks, including an outpouring of love and admiration for Tom King juxtaposed to the arrested development of the Marvel comic universe. Doom Patrol 12and the D&D influence is also discussed along with a surprising recommendation on Batman Beyond 25. The second half of the show is all about the Halloween Comic Fest celebrated by comic stores all across the country. Some stores celebrate with giant events, and others may not even register as a blip on the radar. Walmart has also gotten into the comic scene with DC by selling giant 100 page editions in hopes that it will drive traffic into the local comic shops. Finally Chris and Hector recommend their Top 3 graphic novels for those who are looking to get into the hobby but are not entirely sure where to start.

Philadelphia based director and playwright Dave Ebersole is the creator and writer of Dash, a noir detective story set in 1940 Los Angeles. Dash is a comic cocktail that’s one part Maltese Falcon, one part The Mummy, with twist: Dash Malone is an openly gay private detective. After a three-year hiatus, Dash returns with issue #5. How did Dave get the book back on schedule, and who has been added to the art team to carry on the series? What are Dave’s plans for the series beyond issue six, the finale of The Mysterious Zita Makara arc? We talk a lot about classic films this episode, including Dave’s favorite Rebel Without a Cause, starring the legendary James Dean. Why does Dave prefer to watch it alone? Also in this Special Halloween Episode, we talk about our favorite Universal and Hammer Horror Mummy films. In which format do we prefer to watch another horror classic, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, on DVD or Blu-Ray? Why? We also talk about crime noir films of the 40s and 50s. How do we define crime noir? Which are our favorite films? Will we ever figure out what the heck is going on in The Big Sleep? We wrap up our conversation with the fun questions I ask all my guests! This is episode is sponsored by The Comic Book Shop in Wilmington Delaware, who is having a Halloween Comic Fest and Spookabration 10/27 & 10/28! http://www.thecomicbookshop.com/halloween-comic-fest-sale-weekend/ About Dash #5: https://northwestpress.com/shop/dash-5/ Please take a moment to rate Creator Talks on iTunes: http://apple.co/2Cq9ygK

This week’s guests are Dave Scheidt and Scoot McMahon, the creative team behind Wrapped Up from Lion Forge Comics. I caught up with them briefly during New York Comic Con last year and I’ve been eager to speak to them at length on the show. Wrapped Up is a super fun, all-ages comic about a mummy kid named Milo and the wacky adventures he gets into involving pizza, vampires, pizza, gorillas, pizza, witches, and did I mention pizza? The first volume of Wrapped Up is available at your local comic shop, collecting the first five issues, plus the free Halloween ComicFest story. It will be available at book stores and Amazon on May 1st. Wrapped Up #6 also dropped this week. While there are some elements that pop up sequentially, this is a comic you can jump into with any issue. There are tons of laugh-out-loud moments that work for both kids and adults so it’s definitely worth checking out. Dave can be found online on Twitter at @DaveScheidt. Scoot can be found on Twitter at @scootcomics. CONTACT: Email | Twitter SUBSCRIBE: RSS | iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher Music by Eric Matyas (www.soundimage.org)

Wenn ihr also auf die Beschreibung passt, dann lasst doch mal von euch hören :) Timecodes: [00:00:00] - Intro [00:00:21] - Einleitung [00:06:32] - Sex & Crime Comic Bundle [00:12:38] - Halloween Comicfest 2017 [00:18:31] - HCF 2017 - Shiver [00:26:28] - HCF 2017 - Thor by Simonson #1 [00:28:34] - HCF 2017 - Batman: Night of the Monster Men [00:31:50] - HCF 2017 - Ghostbusters: Dia De Los Muertos [00:38:41] - HCF 2017 - Grimm Tales of Terror [00:41:57] - HCF 2017 - Black Betty One-Shot [00:43:32] - HCF 2017 - Babyteeth #1 [00:49:26] - HCF 2017 - Hellboy and the B.P.R.D 1953 [00:54:26] - HCF 2017 - Lady Mechanika: La Dama De La Muerte [00:59:26] - HCF 2017 - Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Season 2 [01:03:10] - HCF 2017 - Archie's Mad House Returns [01:03:58] - Das aktuelle Archie-Universum [01:08:28] - Shirtless Bear-Fighter #4 (Image Comics) [01:12:27] - Harley & Ivy meet Betty & Veronica #1/#2 (DC Comics) [01:16:50] - Motor Crush #6/#7 (Image Comics) [01:23:06] - Batman: White Knight #1 (DC Comics) [01:28:08] - Alone (Gallery 13) [01:34:30] - Skin & Earth #1 - #4 (Dynamite) [01:41:01] - Siúil, a Rún Band 1 (TokyoPop) [01:46:52] - No.1 With A Bullet #1 (Image Comics) [01:52:19] - Dragon Ball Band 17-20 (Carlsen Comics) [01:55:30] - The Infinite Loop: Nothing but the Truth #1 (IDW) [02:01:15] - Kill or be killed TPB 1/2 (Image Comics) [02:08:25] - Verabschiedung [02:10:39] - Outro [02:10:50] - Information zum Podcast Intro/Outro: Auszüge aus dem Song "Crazy Glue" von Josh Woodward.

Welcome back to another fresh episode of Ka-Pow the Pop Cultured Podcast. What Chicagoland comic shop has been open the longest? Patrick really wants to read a history of Chicago comic book retail stores. Halloween Comicfest just happened and we don’t know if we promoted it correctly. We received a graphic novel this week that had no data in Diamond’s system, yet we had customers’ orders for it. This is the story of getting Diamond to help us with it. Some subscribers are really taking advantage of our subscription service. It’s perfectly fine if you don’t know the pop culture references we use to pitch books.
Guest interview: Cody Kimbrough of The Fortress Comics. On site at the Hagerstown 2nd & Charles store during their Halloween Comic Fest. And, big thanks to Tino & Mike for talking to us during their intense comic book search. Shout out to Big Okie Doom out of Oklahoma for the 'Wartorn' intro track. Rock on, brothers!

Patrick fixed an issue with the receiver (so you can hear the new FOZZY CD “Judas” on ALL 6 store speakers!!). Well folks, my guest this week was supposed to be writer David Gallaher. We had a fantastic chat about his comic, High Moon, a supernatural western starring a werewolf. Unfortunately, when I went to edit the interview, half of the audio was crazy corrupted. This is really unfortunate, because David is a great guy and we had a super fun chat about his book. The first volume of High Moon is called Bullet Holes and Bite Marks and it debuts on October 17th. It features amazing artwork by Steve Ellis, who draws monsters like no other. High Moon is a trilogy and the second volume is set for release in May 2018. So, what am I to do without a guest this week? Well, I did attend New York Comic Con last week and I did a few interviews from the show floor. I was planning on dropping these as smaller bonus episodes throughout the next couple weeks, but instead, I’m putting them all in here. There are three total. First is Dave Scheidt and Scoot McMahon, the creators of a new all ages horror comic called Wrapped Up from Lion Forge Comics. The first issue came out this week and it’s really fun. It follows a mummy named Milo as he gets into all kinds of spooky misadventures. If you want a peek at the comic, there will be a special free issue available for Halloween ComicFest at the end of the month at participating comic shops. The second interview is with writers Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer. Their book, Calla Cthulhu is a coming-of-age adventure story currently available from Dark Horse Comics. The third and final interview is with Jamie Madrox and Monoxide, otherwise known as Twiztid. They were on hand as they’re starring in a new one-shot comic called Haunted High-Ons from Source Point Press. The book is written by Dirk Manning and illustrated by Marianna Pescosta and Alessandro De Fornasari. It debuted at the show and is currently available at the Twiztid Shop and the Source Point Press site. Derek is back at his local comic shop, Valhalla Games and Comics in Plano, TX, for the October on-location episode. But it is also Halloween ComicFest 2016, adding even more flavor into mix. He is joined by customers of the shop, some of them in costume, to discuss horror comics, Halloween specials, as well as scary movies and games. They spend much of their time discussing the many free comic-book offerings for this year's Halloween ComicFest. Derek is particularly interested in the special horror manga issues, such as VIZ Media's Tomie and Drawn and Quarterly's Shigeru Mizuki's Kitaro: Strange Fun for Everyone. But there are many other titles that the gang discusses, ranging from holiday-appropriate (e.g., Comix Tribe's Mummy's Always Right, American Mythology's The Three Stooges Halloween Hullabaloo, and the BoooOOOoooM! Box Halloween Haunt 2016) to Halloween-free, such as several offerings from DC and Marvel.

Comics include the Halloween ComicFest editions of "Grimmiss Island" and "Skylanders," the Free Comic Book Day edition of "Pokemon" and "The Boom! Studios 2016 Summer Blast," and issue 2 of "Space Battle Lunchtime" by Natalie Riess of Oni Press.

A new episode of the Altered Egos Comics Podcast, now with less coughing. 'Tis the night before Halloween, which means it is the night before Halloween ComicFest. The gang prepped the store for the second and less well known free comic book event and settled in to cover New Comic Book Day for 10/28/2015 and a look ahead to 11/04/2015. Not having a topic for the Ramble On doesn't scare this crew, no sirree. Inspired by the night, the crew stumble through treats for trick-r-treating, comic conventions generally, the North Florida Comic Con particularly, and the retail experience with it all. Finally, they bring on their personal recommendations for the week.
Dans ce numéro 35, on vous présente les différentes sorties papier VF du mois d'Octobre 2015. Pas mal de choses à découvrir, surtout que c'est vraiment très diversifié. Its just Jonathan rambling on about books that made it to the store on 10/29/2014 and items that should be in the store 11/05/2014. He also reviews Halloween and Halloween ComicFest in the store, as well as the store's experiences with the North Florida Comic Con. He then tries to approach the idea of nostalgia on his own. And the Rasputin graphic novel he couldn't recall? PETROGRAD by Philip Gelatt and Tyler Crook. Look for it.
You'll definitely find treats, and not tricks, on this special episode of The Comics Alternative. Derek and Gene take their annual look at the various comics being releases specifically for Halloween or published to coincide with the season. They begin with what is probably their favorite of the lot — at least Derek's favorite — Richard Corben's new book, Edgar Allan Poe's Spirits of the Dead (Dark Horse). They point out that while this is an October release, the majority of the stories collected in this volume originally appeared as either single issues or in Dark Horse Presents over the past two years. This is yet another series of Poe adaptation from the great Corben, following his early work for Eerie and Creepy — and most recently collected in Creepy Presents Richard Corben — and Marvel's Haunt of Horror: Edgar Allan Poe. (For more about Corben's work on Poe, specifically commentary on the adaptations found in the new book, check out Derek's recent interview with the artist.) Next the Two Guys turn to a new, fun book from Zac Gorman, Costume Quest: Invasion of the Candy Snatchers (Oni Press). This is based on the popular roleplaying game, Costume Quest with which neither Gene and Derek are familiar. But that doesn't stop them from enjoying this all-age comic. Then they look at a series single issues, beginning with another game-based title, Ian Edginton and Alex Sanchez's The Evil Within #1 (Titan Comics), and one of DC's free releases for this year's Halloween ComicFest, Scooby-Doo Team Up Special Edition (written by Sholly Fisch and art by Dario Brizuela). After that they discuss one of the most exciting new titles of the season, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Robert Hack's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #1 (Archie Comics). The guys feel that this will surely follow the popular and critical success of last year's Afterlife with Archie, and it has the potential of even surpassing it. Next, they look at the first issue of Ty Thomas Kuckman, Trevor Luckman, and Dave Mim's All Hallows' Eve (215 Ink), Donny Cates and Daniel Warren Johnson's Ghost Fleet #1 (Dark Horse), and Alan Robert's Killjoy: Special Halloween One-Shot (IDW Publishing). Finally, they wrap up with a survey of Zenescope's holiday offerings: Grimm Fairy Tales 2014 Halloween Special, Zombies vs. Cheerleaders Halloween Special, and Hollywood Zombie Apocalypse #1. As the guys reveal, it's a mixed back with Zenescope, but if you're looking for a little cheesecake thrown in with your cheesy horror, these titles might be for you. Whatever your tastes, you're certain to find some good comics reading this Halloween season!

They discuss the kind of free comics being given out this year — such as reprints of Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Afterlife with Archie, Rachel Rising, and Marvel's Secret Wars (which has nothing to do with Halloween or anything horror-related) — and the kind of costumes that everyone was wearing for the event. Derek also manages to talk with artist Jefferson Muncy and professional cosplayer Krystle Starr about the work that they do and what they're bringing to the event. Among the highlights are strong recommendations for Terry Moore's Rachel Rising series, a primer on the art scene in Dallas, a strange and disturbing story concerning a B-list (really, more of a C- or D-list) celebrity at last weekend's Dallas Comic Con, and Derek's futile attempt to find someone who actually watched the first episode of NBC's Constantine. All in all, everyone had a good time at the event…and Derek got his share of free Halloween ComicFest comics!

It's that time of the month for the Two Guys with PhDs…that is, it's time for the July Previews catalog! On this episode, Andy and Derek take their monthly gander at some of the great comics being solicited in Previews and due out in the next couple of months. All of the major publishers, and many, many of the smaller ones, are represented here, and the guys comment on how this is a particularly fat month when it comes to new and upcoming comics. They begin the show by looking at some of the titles being offered for this year's Halloween ComicFest, and then they get into the nitty-gritty of the catalog. Some of the titles that they highlight include Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly's The New York Four and Satoshi Kon's Opus (Dark Horse), Peter Milligan and Leandro Fernandez's The Names #1 and Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy's The Wake hardcover (Vertigo/DC Comics), Will Eisner's Spirit, Vol. 2: Artist's Edition and Craig Yoe's The Worst of Eerie Publications (IDW Publishing), Jay Faerber and Scott Godlewski's Copperhead #1 and Ryan Browne's God Hates Astronauts #1 (Image Comics), Gary Scott Beatly and Aaron Warner's Number One #1 (Aazurn Publishing), Roberto Aguirre Sacasa and Robert Hack's Sabrina #1 (Archie Comics), Hubert and Marie Caillou's Adrian and the Tree of Secrets and Julie Maroh's Skandalon (Arsenal Pulp Press), George Perez's Sirens #1 (BOOM! Studios), Duane Swierczynsky and Keith Burns's Ex-Con #1 (Dynamite Entertainment), Gilbert Hernandez's Bumperhead (Drawn and Quarterly), Dash Shaw's Doctors and Joe Sacco's Bumf 1: I Buggered the Kaiser (Fantagraphics), Paul Pope and J. T. Petty's Battling Boy: The Rise of Aurora West and Farel Dalrymple's The Wrenchies (First Second), Grant Morrison and Frazer Irving's Annihilator #1 (Legendary Comics), Greg Rucka and Justin Greenwood's Stumptown: The Case of the King of Clubs #1 (Oni Press), and Jorg Tittle and John Aggs's Ricky Rouse Has a Gun (SelfMadeHero). And this is just the tip of the solicitation iceberg. You really do have to listen to the entire episode to get the full scope, and warm fuzzy feelings, of this month's Previews.

To celebrate this year's Halloween ComicFest, the Two Guys with PhDs (talking about comics) paid another visit to Collected Comics in Plano, your one-stop-shop for everything thrilling and chilling! Gene and Derek were joined by Collected's co-owner Brent Irwin, comics artist and friend of the show, Andy Hirsch, and Andy's “Bob's Burgers” companion, Natalie Khan. It was truly a ghoulish experience, made more so by the mayhem surrounding everyone during the podcast recording. Amongst crowds of customers, face-painted patrons, kids with loud toys, and Yu-Gi-Oh card players breaking tables, the Two Guys and their guests talked about the free Halloween ComicFest comics, recent horror-related titles, Andy's work on Adventure Time and Regular Show comics, the experience of watching Saturday morning cartoons in the '70s and '80s, comics and library community outreach efforts, contentious definitions of the “graphic novel,” Dell and Gold Key TV show-based comics, Gene's challenge to keep up with new weekly comics, and Derek's disturbing revelation that his favorite Halloween costume experience was when he was dressed as a baby, complete with diaper, pacifier, and nippled bottle. Despite the latter obstacle, everyone had a fun time, and they managed to end the episode before the Yu-Gi-Oh hoard descended upon them. Experience the fun on this latest supplemental show!
