Our story tonight is called Valentine's at the Inn, Part 1, and it is a story about guests arriving on a sunny cold day to the warmth and charm of the Village Inn. It's also about breakfast served on freshly ironed table cloths in the drawing room, socks with hearts on them, a black cat and a feather duster, and a little mystery that begins to unwind. Many of the recent hires for restaurant CEO positions share a common listing on their resumes: Somewhere along the way, they logged time at Yum Brands, parent of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC and The Habit. For reasons that go beyond the sheer size of the franchisor, it's become a major prep school of sorts for a new generation of chain chiefs, from Brian Niccol at Starbucks to Rob Lynch at Shake Shack. The situation calls to mind a time when it seemed almost like a requirement for casual-dining CEOs to have worked under Norman Brinker at the parent of Steak and Ale or Chili's (now led by a Yum alumnus, Kevin Hochman). The graduates of those real-world training centers eventually found themselves in demand to lead chains in every sector of the business, from family dining (Mike Jenkins at Bakers Square and Village Inn) to eatertainment (Dick Frank at Chuck E. Cheese). This week's episode of Restaurant Rewind looks at the unique role those companies played in shaping the industry's leadership ranks, as well as why Yum is filling a similar role today. A Clare Publican believes new government proposals aiming to keep physical tender in circulation need to be extended across all sectors of the economy. Under the 'Access to Cash Bill' introduced to Cabinet this week, convenience stores and pharmacies will be obliged to accept notes and coins as payment from those who prefer to use it as they provide essential items. The plans will also compel the Central Bank to provide more Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) throughout the country to ensure people can withdraw cash in their localities. Ann Porter who owns the Village Inn in Quin says cash is simply part and parcel of rural life.

On Tuesday morning, private equity firm and Modern Market Eatery’s parent company, Butterfly Equity, announced the intent to acquire fast-casual chain Qdoba Mexican Eats for an unspecified amount of money. The transaction, which is expected to close in the third quarter of 2022, will merge Modern Restaurant Concepts — which encompasses Modern Market Eatery and Lemonade — and Qdoba into one fast-casual restaurant platform, though all three will continue to operate separate brands. Then, just a few hours later, MTY Food Group, parent to Papa Murphy’s, acquired Famous Dave’s parent BBQ Holdings. The deal was priced at $17.25 a share, or about $200 million. BBQ Holdings, also parent to Village Inn, Barrio Queen, Granite City and other restaurants, operates over 200 franchised locations and 100 corporate-owned stores. BBQ Holdings acquired Barrio Queen earlier this year. This comes two weeks after the purchase of Bellagreen by Au Bon Pain’s parent Ampex Brands, which was allegedly a long time in the works. What does all this mean with a looming recession ahead? NRN’s editorial director Sam Oches weighs in. Katie Kraushaar of the Quincy Public Library talks about a book being discussed TONIGHT at Village Inn and other good things going on at the library. Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. Soon to be made into an HBO movie by Oprah Winfrey and Alan Ball, this New York Times bestseller takes readers on an extraordinary journey, from the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s to stark white laboratories with freezers filled with HeLa cells, from Henrietta's small, dying hometown of Clover, Virginia, to East Baltimore today, where her children and grandchildren live and struggle with the legacy of her cells. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew. It's a story inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we're made of. The episode of The Cabin is presented by Calumet County; https://bit.ly/3rxzxhmCampfire Conversation: In Wisconsin, it's no secret, or surprise, that we love supper clubs. It's a dining experience like no other that includes a whole lot of food for not too much money. It's an experience that starts at the bar where the most popular drink ordered is the Old Fashioned. A typical meal may include a relish tray, bread, soup, salad, an entrée such as steak, chicken or fish and ice cream drinks for dessert. Most supper clubs are multi-generational family run businesses and feature recipes that have been around just as long. You can't be in a hurry though. The experience could take a couple of hours, especially if you go on a weekend. The Calumet County region has 16 supper clubs to choose from and is known as the Supper Club Capital of the Midwest®. We talk about Anne Arundel County, Maryland issues that have been talked about for years. Why is over-development being allowed when the infrastructure isn't being built to match the current needs first? Even though we have zoning laws in place, it seems like all exemptions are allowed by the county against the wishes of the citizens but to the delight of developers. The Bay Bridge is a disaster for local residents because the state just keeps doing study after study on where to put a new span and nothing ever gets done. They haven't put in a new span across the Chesapeake Bay or added spans where the current ones sit. Or Better yet, creating a brand new bridge like the Delaware Memorial Bridge that has 4 lanes on each side. And how about rezoning that would be good for the county like the Village Inn or up near the Rt. 2/10/100 interchange where the county won't let the owners rezone from Residential to Commercial even though Rt 2 hasn't been a residential road in decades. Or the spike in violence at the Village Inn even though the owners want to improve the property but can't until the county helps them with re-zoning.We talk about these issues and more in this episode. Please subscribe and rate this podcast on your podcast platforms like Apple and Google as it helps us a ton. They noted the mile marker where it flew off and planned to see if they could find it on the way back. Their first stop was to a Luthier (a professional guitar repairman). Rick and Robin curbed an original Martin D-28 guitar laying on the side of the road. It was missing all of the tuners and strings but otherwise it was in good condition. This was a guitar that Rick had always dreamed of having but never thought possible because they were too expensive. The repair cost only $167.00 and it was appraised at $3,800! Robin noted an AMC theatre across the street that caught her attention.Rick then scheduled a time to do a podcast at Iowa Catholic Radio with Jimmy Olsen that afternoon which was 1.7 miles away. On the way, they stopped to get gas. Robin noted a Village Inn restaurant next to the gas station. They had their Teen Rescue interview which will be aired at a later date.Their next appointment was to have dinner with their friends, Spencer and Mary Thury. Since they had time, Rick decided to do an Uber Eats delivery which surprisingly lead them back to the Village Inn and was to be delivered, you guessed it, to the AMC theater. Rick and Robin marveled at how it was all playing out so smoothly. Before going further in the story, it is important to note that Rick is infamously known as someone who always drives under the speed limit. Two blocks from the AMC, they get pulled over by a policeman. Rick exits the car with license in hand and asks the policeman what he did wrong. He never imaged that he had been going 41 on a 30 mile per hour road. When the policeman learned they were from Florida, he began apologizing for pulling them over. Rick then explained that he needed to deliver some food and the policeman said he would follow them over to the AMC. The policeman was so nice and gave them a warning. As they headed down the road for dinner, Rick realizes he never got his driver’s license back. They called the Clive County Police department and the policeman kindly agrees to drive to the Olive Garden 18 miles away and return the license. The Thury’s were surprised when a police car shows up and calls out Rick’s name. The men exchanged cell phone numbers because they feel there was a reason for this crazy encounter. After dinner, they leave and head north hoping to find the headlight but to no avail. But Rick did locate a muffler and carried it back to the car. They uneventfully make it back home in the dark hoping not to get pulled over again with only one headlight. Rick and Robin wanted to share this short adventure because when you are planning your life out, when you are living for Jesus, you just never know what is going to happen. You might meet somebody new, you might get something you have always dreamed of having, and sometimes you don’t find what you are looking for. You never know why things happen. It helps to look at life like an adventure. Give your day to the Lord, honor Him, and see what God has for you. This is how you can live and it is fun to see what God does. As we are all on our journey, we can take on different attitudes. There is the optimist, the pessimist, and the psalmist who says my cup isn’t half full or half empty, my cup runs over. We have abundance because of what Jesus has done for us. When you live in abundance, you can give to others. When you are in lack or in need it is tough to imagine giving to others. Say to yourself, it doesn’t matter what I have been called in the past, what I have done in the past, or whether I have been deemed an optimist or a pessimist, Choose to be a psalmist. When you are able to be a psalmist, that is what we call a “Radical Life.”
Sometimes as a Dad, you get the blame and probably for good reason.

"Music is worth living for," Andrew W.K. sings in his latest rock anthem. In this second episode on the weirdness of music, JF and Phil focus on two works steeped in ambiguity and paradox: Bob Dylan's "Jokerman," from the landmark post-Christian album Infidels, and Franz Liszt's "Mephisto Waltz, No. 1: The Dance at the Village Inn," inspired by an episode in the Faust legend. If this conversation has a central theme, it may be music's power to unhinge every fixed binary, from God and the Devil to culture and nature. Music, as exemplified in these pieces, can put us in touch with the abiding mystery of the eternal in the historical, the unhuman in the human... The hills are alive! One way to combat complacency is to celebrate more often, after all, who doesn't like a good party, even if it is only a 20-minute stop at the Village Inn for a cup of coffee and a slice of Apple pie (ala-mode, of course)? Celebration is good for the soul. Life is wearisome, and praise is sporadic if at all. We need a few "at-a-boys," a frequent "you're awesome," and especially a sincere, "thank you." If you haven't done a little cheering, a little slap on the back, or a round of applause lately for the good things you do together or the kindnesses you do for each other, it's time to start again. In this podcast Dr. Ross presences three ways celebrations grow your relationship! He makes the point that not many things are better than a celebration, large or small, with the person (people), you love the most - your mate, children, family, and friends.
In 1990 when Danny Lehan was 15 years old, he’d ride his bicycle to the Village Inn, where he worked. His first job at the restaurant, was a bus boy; he worked weekends as he was going to school. Then Lehan became a dishwasher, then a cook and then a server. He came home from work two years later and told his parents he was going to own that restaurant one day. Through lots of hard work and persistence, Danny now currently owns 3 Village Inn restaurants in Pinellas County Florida.
